Ghetto White Boy Syndrome[edit source]

Hey would you look at that! I finally got around to finishing something! YAY! Anyway, I figured I would let you know since you seemed to be such a great supporter of that. If you feel like it, its up on Pee Review again, however you don't have to. And I did in fact tone down the "racism". This was definitely not just a shameless attempt at getting a quick review if that was what you were thinking... Icons-flag-pi.PNG Pirate Lord__Sonic80 (Yell  •  Latest literary excretion) __ 20:07, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

There is a little bit of a consistency issue with calling it Ghetto White Boy Syndrome yet having effect all races and both genders. Try to rephrase the first paragraph to explain that without being wordy. I normally don't like to review the same article twice, its generally best to get the opinion of someone else. --Mnbvcxz 20:59, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for checking it over again, I'd like to say that the first line of the article shows its actual name is 'Ebono-cracka Reclassification Syndrome' only it is given the name Ghetto White Boy Syndrome because it affects White Males the most, however can be found in females and other ethnic groups, thought the chances are much lower. Congratulations![edit source]

So far you, Mnbvcxz, have made 4,717 contributions to this site, of which 1,612 (34.17%), were in the image namespace. Maybe you can now change categories like "Nonnude Images" and "Boobage Images" to less capitalized stuff like "Nonnude images" and "Boobage images", how about it? -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 18:54, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

You'd probably need a bot to do that. Re-directs don't work in categories. To change the category name, and keep the contents you'd have to change the category link in every article, image, and subcategory in the entire category. Alot of the categories have "random capitalization" excessively long titles, and the like. Additionally, their are several redundant or joke categories. --Mnbvcxz 19:20, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
Yes indeed, but isn't that the kind of thing you've been doing? -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 19:43, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

VFH[edit source]

Hey just concerned by what your vote meant. What could be improved to fit more casual readers?--Tagstit 06:45, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Looking back, I think it comes off as too "dramatic". By that, I mean the "article" cares too much about the subject matter. Praise articles and overly hostile attack articles often fall into the error of being overly "dramatic".
One way around that could be to change the "perspective" of the article. For example, you could write it as a press release of a military contractor. When you do write "perspective" based articles, its generally best to be a bit "blunt" with whose perspective your using.
As a final note, you may also be suffering from some rambling due to lack of good material, but I really can't tell right now. --Mnbvcxz 17:30, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

What does.....[edit source]

Fleshing out explained: Dude, this is your article. It's a skeleton of generalities which needs to be expanded/explained/compared & contrasted

...."flesh out your article" mean? I couldn't fucking understand what the word "flesh out the article" mean, when you posted the Pee Review for my article, I don't have a clue. Does it mean, "go eat shit, fuckers"? I just don't know what you're talking about! GiratinaOriginForme.png |Si Plebius Dato' Joe ang Man on Fire CUN|IC Kill Don't be fooled. I'm an Aussie too. | 09:10, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

  • Since this is a common phrase, perhaps you're unable to look it up yourself? Perhaps you don't understand the phrase being used in the context of your article and need more specifics? Perhaps if you fleshed out your complaint it would be easier to understand what you don't understand in regards to his use of this common critical phrase. BTW, since I'm a total pain-in-the-ass myself I appreciate how you're making me look like a moderate by comparison--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  10:16, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
  • Generally, its best to ask for information about a review on the review itself. However, sometimes the reviewer forgets to watch that page, so I really wouldn't call asking a question on the review's talk page a breech of etiquette in itself. However, you should generally link to the review in question, especially if the review happened a while ago.
  • But more importantly, don't insult the reviewer when asking for information. It only makes you like a dick, and possibly a retard/10 year old if ask for commonly known information in an insulting manner. Additionally, you're chances of getting a reply that answers your questions go down significantly by insulting the reviewer. As a final note, "fleshing out your article" is really an idiom that means the author should consume human feces in order to get new ideas. --Mnbvcxz 16:14, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Just a suggestion[edit source]

I've seen you're reorganizing some categories again. How about making a "Cat Images" category and put the images with both cats and dogs, like Image:Pwned-37722.jpg, in "Cats & Dogs Images". -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 17:22, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

I might get around to doing that, but that will require moving hundreds of pics. I don't really like categories with over 200 items, especially those with articles and images. It makes stuff too hard to find. (For maintenance/recording keeping categories, its ok, but not for categories used to find articles and images.) If I did create a cat image category, I might need to sub-divide it again. So, I'm holding off on doing that for a while. --Mnbvcxz 17:30, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Hey[edit source]

Hey, I just wanted to know, do all noobs (I know I am one myself) defend their first articles to the death if you give them a less than average scored pee review. I have given a look at a few first articles and I try to be as fair and as helpful as possible, but they just think they are hilarious. It is really annoying and just wanted to know if I am not handling it right or I am the only one with this problem, thanks--Tagstit 07:08, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Drive by: Many people think their first article is hilarity personified. It can be tough, when reviewing - you try to strike the right balance between being nice to them and telling them the truth about the POS they just wrote, and because you didn't think it was amazing, they take offense. All you can do is try - if they don't agree with you, well, that's their right: humour is subjective. That's why I always finish my reviews by saying it is only my opinion, and others are available. But yeah, sometimes you'll get bugged by people convinced they're comedy genius incarnate, and all you can do is stick to your guns and wish 'em luck. If they try to self-nom for VFH, they'll usually find out quite quickly how wrong they are! --UU - natter UU Manhole.gif 14:17, Jan 21

Hey there, Hi there, Ho there[edit source]

Noticed you've been putting some unused images up on the QVFD. While it's a nice gesture, it's unnecessary, as they all eventually end up on the unused images list. They'll all be got to eventually (which is a lie) and will be documented for us always. Thanks, and keep up the good work. Cheers. -RAHB 04:20, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

They were redundant, not merely unused. I though redundant images went on QVFD, so the admins wouldn't have to waste as much time deciding if they were keepable or not. --Mnbvcxz 04:24, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
Well, if redundant and used, the proper precautions should be taken (deleting one and relinking the other to the place where the first was). But redundant and unused is still unused, so it's unnecessary. It's not that attention shouldn't be drawn, but it's that there are so many images like that, it would clog QVFD if all of them were listed. That's the reason the unused images list exists. -RAHB 08:10, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Crap Template[edit source]

OK, my comments last evening were left after spending a day in the house, trapped with children, because of everything being cancelled due to a snow and ice storm. And its that time of month. Thus the perfect storm.

Anyway, lets get back to the Crap template issue. I understand your reasoning that your mind changed between then and now. However there has to be a limit to the number of times something comes up on VFD (within a reasonable period time) before it becomes an irritant. Given the number of times that this template has been on VFD, the votes have been to leave well enough alone. And yes, I understand that over time, old people slough off and new people sign up. But I would ask that you also keep in mind that there are a lot of old timers still on the site, and we tend to have elephant memories.

That said, you do good work around her. An awfully lot of it is stuff that should be done and isn't because people like me find categorizing things to be dreadfully boring. I appreciate everything that you do. My reaction on the VFD should not be viewed as my opinion of your efforts. ~butting in here My advice would be, that template removal is nice, but remember that there are still yet worse offenses in written articles. If you have that many templates that serve NO purpose, may I suggest that we consider a special template deleting space for a limited period of time so it doesn't interfer with VFD's on wretched articles? Dame PPsigPPlips.gifGUN PotY WotM 2xPotM 17xVFH VFP Poo PMS •YAP• 21:08, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
I would say that bad templates are worse than bad articles, mainly because bad templates can clutter up several different articles. Additionally, random sectional templates or "perverse instruction" maintenance templates not only clutter up articles, but encourage bad article writing. Like this abomination, fouled up in part because of the Mythical presidents of the United States template.
I wouldn't be opposed to a special ad hoc template deletion system. But, good luck getting the admins to approve that. Hyperbole tried that a few months ago with no success. --Mnb'z 21:25, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
I used to get away with 5 per day no problem... The thing is, don't do it when VFD is full. If you want a rule of thumb... Don't make a nom if there are more than 16 articles on VFD... People only really care if they can't make their noms... As I said before... {{pants}} is the solution to this and various other problems... Pants will go ahead (I think) but it's rather a BIG change, so it's sensible that we take our time to think about it for awhile... MrN MrN9000SouthParksmall.jpg 21:36, Feb 7
Well the Seinfield article is crap, and you and I could disagree on this, and do. I personally would like to blast every article on this site that has sentences that start off like "Oprah Winfrey was the 412th President of the United States and ruled the earth fom 4012 to 4016 when she wasn't eating peanut butter through her huge black ass..." This of course is not an actual sentence, but it is indictative of the things that are my pet peeves. I would just advise you not to let this template thing blind you too much. Laws of Physics[edit source]

Does it need quotes or templates? You did not mention those in the pee review. --Docile hippopotamus 09:31, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Generally, avoid quotes and templates unless you think the article needs them. --Mnb'z 16:35, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
...which no article ever does. Sir SysRq (talk) 19:56, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
There are time when templates and quotes are funny. However, if you're not sure if you should add a quote or template, don't. And by template, I mean comment template, (like "this is x" template, approves templates, and written by templates) not sectional templates (link to related articles templates) or warning templates (NSFW and related templates). --Mnb'z 19:58, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
Is this template worth putting on it? --Docile hippopotamus 03:51, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
Generally, "canned joke" templates are bad. Since they are templates, they are, by nature, cliche. --Mnb'z 05:25, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Koalas[edit source]

Should koala images be categorized as "Bear Images"? -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 18:05, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

maybe they should go in marsupials. I wasn't aware that the category:Marsupials existed when I categorized them. --Mnb'z 23:09, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
Maybe it's time to create a "Marsupial Images" category? -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 23:26, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
that might be a good idea. However, I've generally wait to create new categories until I have time to fill them with content. --Mnb'z 00:39, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Asses[edit source]

Do donkeys and such belong into "Horse Images" as well? -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 03:31, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

close enough. We don't have enough images to have separate donkey, zebra, mule, unicorn, pony, etc. categories. --Mnb'z 03:33, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
Okay, but it should be mentioned somewhere on the category page or so. -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 03:36, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
It makes more sense than putting donkeys and female butts in the same category. --Mnb'z 03:38, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
I completely agree, though that was quite funny though. -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 03:43, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Actually she has, Misty just has small breasts. -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 16:02, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
She's 10 or 12 according to Pokemon cannon. Unless she looks "aged" and "developed" by quite a few years, we have to assume she's underage. --Mnb'z 16:08, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
Is it really that bad if she's underage? -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 16:15, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

Did you know?[edit source]

That llamas are very close relatives of camels? -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 07:08, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

I don't know of a good way to combine them in one category. Generally, obscure or long category names should be avoided. Also, we have sheep and goats in different categories. Also, I managed to get Category:mammal Images back down to one page. --Mnb'z 07:17, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
I see your point, but what would we do if we got a picture of an alpaca? Just stuff it in the Llama category somewhere? -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 07:21, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

You know[edit source]

Rather than changing those categories, you should really be adding another category and then adding that category as a sub-category of the first one. Start again from the top. Spang talk 05:59, 27 Feb 2009

What? I am trying to clear out some of broad categories, and using those broad categories as "presort" categories. --Mnb'z 06:02, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
But you still want to have them all in the broad category, with the option of refining it further. By removing the main category from the image page, you're making it show up only in the sub-category, which makes stuff harder to find if you're only looking for general stuff.
Not that people will care much for how a category of non-nude images is organised, but, y'know, for future reference and stuff. Spang talk 06:05, 27 Feb 2009

I can see your point. However, overly large categories also make stuff hard to find. To solve that problem, I created two image category templates:

and

I wouldn't be opposed to a catch-all category, but I don't think the catch-all should be mixed with the "miscellaneous".

I've generally been keeping articles in multiple categories, but I have been removing the Category:Animals when an article is in several subcategories of mammals. --Mnb'z 06:18, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Plus, the "moving out" of images helps show what has and hasn't been subcated yet. BTW, How hard would it be to "bot edit" into broad catch all categories. --Mnb'z 06:22, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, though someone might not know which animal or race of non-nude woman they were looking for, and that's why it's good to keep everything in the main category with the option to be more specific later. Unless the main category was so general that nobody would be looking for pictures of it. And it wouldn't be too hard to have a bot add the main category back to any of the images in the sub-categories. If you can find someone who can run a bot.
Also, well done trying to sort stuff out anyway! Good luck with the other 77,000 images :) Spang talk 06:35, 27 Feb 2009
Doesn't MrN9000 have a bot? --Mnb'z 06:40, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
Sure does, but you'd have to ask him about how to make it go. Spang talk 06:42, 27 Feb 2009
I'm going to go ahead and finish separating them, leaving the division half finished is worse than either having them properly separated to grouped together. I can also "manual bot" them into a catch all category. --Mnb'z 07:00, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Oh, jeez... the one on Pontius Pilates. I try to avoid opening any boobage-related pictures at work. Incidentally, I'm also highly skeptical that the woman in User:Hyperbole/Labor Day is Hispanic, but I have no actual information on her. Tinymasaru.gifpillow talk 17:32, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
I fixed the supermodel one. Since the other one is questionable, I'll leave it as is, moving it back and forth isn't good. In hindsight, that probably wasn't my best categorization idea. But, I'm 90% done right now, so I'll finish it. --Mnb'z 17:36, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
I'd propose putting all Hispanic and possibly Hispanic ones in the White category, it's sometimes very hard to tell the difference. -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 17:42, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
That defeats the purpose of the separation: its mainly to get the category size down. --Mnb'z 17:50, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
On a related note, I'm wondering if I should go find someone who has a bot to categorize the images to a "Nonnude Images catchall" category. Really, I'd rather do that the animal images first, but I don't think racially segregating the noonude Images was my best idea. Although, it probably is somewhat useful. --Mnb'z 18:00, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

About King of Hyrule Article[edit source]

Hey thanks man for letting me put some of my king of hyrule content into the new one.You stated that you wanted the king article to be coheherent and true, and wanted me to tone down on the sex jokes.could you be more lienient and let some sex jokes and celebraty stuff get posted.sure, my content i posted about the king was random but dont forget, the king is an obscure character.there isnt much to write about him other than he was in the zelda games for cd-i.making up stuff will make the article more interesting.it will also make the king article much longer. -Jupiterfox

The general consensus on here is that "This cartoon character had sex with everyone" type articles are bad. The random sex stuff often ruins the flow of an article, and comes across as stupid and not funny. There are times that "the subject is a whore" articles can work, but even, they need to be consistent and followable. (And it doesn't hurt if the subject is actually a whore). --Mnb'z 03:55, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

yo, are you going to repost the king jedi content that was deleted by a user.it made the article pretty funny. -Jupiterfox

Thanks for the advice[edit source]

Hey,thanks for the advice on the miranda cosgrove article.Just so you know its not finished yet.i still gotta finish editing it.And about the jokes in the article.I know they are stupid but what is funny and not stupid??and ive read the beginners guide. isnt humor dependent on the person .wont a 12 year old find the stuff on the page funny but not a 30 year old. If ya want, you can help edit the article so there is more stuff you find is not so stupid.just dont vote it for deletion.add stuff and get rid of stuff as you please. work around my content. And I will try to add other types of humor and tone down on the poop and sex jokes so it will be less random when its done okay.ill even post some true information about miranda.-Jupiterfox

Have you read HTBFANJS also? That kinda answers that question... If you intend to stick around Uncyc, it's well worth it. MrN MrN9000SouthParksmall.jpg 22:34, Mar 16

yeh,ive read that page too =HTOBFANJS.I just like making random stuff.Ill just have to try to be a little less random and be more coherent with articles.my articles would probably stay on the site longer -Jupiterfox

If you want to write REALLY random... you can here but less so on Uncyc... MrN MrN9000SouthParksmall.jpg 22:47, Mar 16
Of course, illogicopedia does have tighter indecency standards than we do. --Mnb'z 04:35, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

YO[edit source]

iM thinking reposting the fif la fume article.im gonna add a lot more stuff to it.i may need help editing it because i tend to be random.what kind of humor should i use.appearenly, you think sex jokes arnt funny on here so what do you think is funny.just give me some stuff to put on the page.Stuff about hitler,Samuel L Jackson???I reallly want that article to stay on this site. Its not like im gonna make a page with one sentence.and i know you are sick of me posting stuff on your talk page rightJupiterfox

Don't re-add deleted content without checking with an admin. It's not that "sex jokes are not funny" some are, some are not. It depends how it's done. If you have read HTBFANJS then that's the best advice we have. If you want to know what is considered funny on this site, read articles at UN:BEST. Go there, and read lots, and lots of them. Take your time, and learn. Being funny takes effort. If you have any further questions Jupiterfox, direct them to me. Not this user. Thanks. MrN MrN9000SouthParksmall.jpg 15:05, Mar 17
What MrN9000 said. He's an admin, and he knows more about good writing than I do.
Anyway, I think your problem is that your relying on vulgarity in place of humor. Simply describing rape and the like generally is not funny. Also, you seen to have a very choppy writing style, which gives your writing an "ugly" feel. Try to write like you would talk, and use longer sentences. I would also suggest working on your punctuation/formatting a bit. For example, when you don't leave a space after a period, it gives the reader the "feel" of a run on sentence. --Mnb'z 18:37, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

I know what you sayin Mnbvcxz .but humor is an abstract concept.some things are funny, some things are just not funny.it varies for everybody..some people find random illogical stuff funny. like spaghtetti having sex with mario.i guess uncyclopdia has a standard of humor that it wants to create.ill try using thier humor more.Jupiterfox

Now then...[edit source]

So as you said... The problem with VFH is not so much the voting, it's getting the good articles nominated. A voting award is out of the question, but it might be possible to reward people who make quality nominations. That's the tricky part anyway. What problems might we get, and how could it work? We don't want people rushing to nominate articles which are "almost ready", but it might be possible to do something. Have a think about it... MrN MrN9000SouthParksmall.jpg 18:00, Mar 17

Actually, I would say its more of a problem of good/established authors not getting their articles noticed. I really don't think a Voter/Nominator of the Month award would necessarily be a good idea. Or, more broadly, the the current system requires too much work to find front page worthy articles. The problem is that most of the existent policies which make the system too labor heavy were put in place to prevent other evils. Personally, I think some of the admins are too concerned with maintaining high vote totals. There are reasons for that (i.e. to prevent a few users from controlling VFH, or to prevent a user from forming a posse to get his article featured), but it would work just the same if the highest scoring article was +6 or +26. And, it never hurts to have the appearance of activity.
Anyway, what we need to do is find ways to get good articles out of the woodwork, without generating a whoring fest. The main problem is that the established authors are the ones least likely to bring their new articles to the attention of others. --Mnb'z 18:33, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
Yep, I think that's what I was trying to say. We need to encourage people to make quality VFH nominations. We have loads of really good stuff sitting around which everyone has forgotten about... MrN MrN9000SouthParksmall.jpg 18:41, Mar 17
Sorry to but in, but consider yourself Mnbvcxz - you consistently vote against very good articles with 'obscure subject/I don't get it votes'. I personally dread my own articles going on VFH because I find the criticism based on ignorance and/or personality politics. I think a lot of other writers feel the same. I was going to nominate another far better article than the Sonic article you re-nommed by the same author you know the second thought I had, it will probably get voted out quick - those are your kind of votes from yourself and a few others.--Sycamore (Talk) 18:49, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
You vote about as negatively as I. I looked through the articles on VFH that we both voted on. You had +0 net "for" votes, I had -1 net "for" votes. Also, the Vote "For" Inquisition-ism isn't good for the wiki. --Mnb'z 19:02, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
People read an article on VFH... They don't like it, but don't want to upset the author so they (maybe silently) abstain a lot of the time. It would (probably) be better for VFH if people always voted either one way or the other when they do read the article, but only a few users choose to do that. queries[edit source]

hey mnbvcxz, do you have any comment regarding the comically large bonuses being paid to editors of the floundering unsignpost? also, any chance your bot budy can deliver this week's issue once it's ready? SirGerrycheeversGunTalk 17:29, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

I should be able to deliver it, what time is it normally finished? --Mnb'z 17:33, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
we at the signpost don't have any set deadlines, but it should be done by about 20:30 UTC (three hours from now). SirGerrycheeversGunTalk 17:38, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
I'm not going to be back online until about 4:30 UTC . --Mnb'z 17:40, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
no worries. i'll be finishing it up shortly, if you could deliver it (here) whenever you can that'd be swell. SirGerrycheeversGunTalk 18:41, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

I have never understood[edit source]

Why people find your name hard to spell. First "M", then "nbvcx" (which are conveniently placed next to eachother on my keyboard) and as a finishing touch a "z" at the end. Nothing difficult about it really. I never noticed. I never spelled it out on my keyboard either. I would have noticed something like EGBDF or ACEG--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  09:37, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Portal for Science[edit source]

Any idea where I could find an easily-editable portal template for Science, for instance? My aim is to make a really simple 2-column page, main story on the left and perhaps 3 additional stories - images, headers, links - on the right. And something else. -- Style Oranssiviiva.jpg Guide 18:33, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm not familiar with that kind of template. The portal I creates is basically a table, but it sorta works and its not too complex. --Mnb'z 18:46, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
All right, thanks. The Cabal seems to be for - but there's a chance it gets limited to the existing categories. It could have been more, we'll see what happens. Thanks for your support, this was one of my most constructive ideas here. If Sonic doesn't go as it is, you could maybe get to take over the Games portal? It is a category if I'm not mistaken. -- Style Oranssiviiva.jpg Guide 07:11, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
Checked my facts for once - of course it's a category. I looked at what Wikipedia has and what Mordillo and others okayed - so I think I'll just try to slap together a Science portal out of your template. You, I and Orian57 are the only ones doing anything about this right now. Who else might be interested? I left a question on Mordillo's talk page about what happens next. I'll make the portal while waiting for reply. -- Style Oranssiviiva.jpg Guide 17:03, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
I would suggest waiting until we get a basic format down before we start creating the portals. I'm not exactly sure what you intend to do with them. --Mnb'z 17:59, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
This http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Arts is what Mordillo suggested to me a while ago. I agree with him there, but would need some template to work it. I cannot swipe it directly from Wikipedia because it has stuff Uncyc doesn't - won't work at all, I tried. I would probably make a similar one for science here, and it could then be copied to those categories it fits. Idea is as it was: one featured article like on main page here, perhaps some quote or such, links to a few secondary articles. At least that. -- Style Oranssiviiva.jpg Guide 18:10, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

The problem is...[edit source]

Each of the categories listed on the front page has several features already in it. If you go down to the first level subcategories, Category:Politics and Government has 110, as an example. I really don't see what good highlighting a few articles would do. Now, the portals on more specific areas might be more helpful.

I would advise putting the following on a portal:

  • list of featured and quasi-featured articles in the subject (bot generated list)
  • list of good by not featured/quasi articles
  • list of articles needing a rewrite/fix/ect in the subject (bot generated)
  • list of wanted articles to go with the rewrites

Now, the problem is, I really don't see a point in mentioning "good nonfeatured" articles when there are 100+ featured articles mentioned on the portal. Well, we could, but the reader would be overwhelmed by data, and a causal reader wouldn't want 2nd tier articles when we have 100 1st tier ones. I think a better idea would be to make the portals as low maintenance as possible, i.e. avoid an article of the month, and focus more on narrower topics. The broad topic portals being mainly used to point to narrower topic portals.

If you think about, each of the main categories is broad enough that they get a new highlighted every week or two from VFH, and people's interest tend to be more narrow than those broad topics. For example, a Sonic, Pokemon, Mario, or Roman Emperor portal might be more helpful, as the topic would be narrow enough that a portal could give an overview of uncyclopedia's coverage of that issue. (I.e. these articles are good, these ones need work, and these ones need to be created). They'd also being pointing to a relatively few good articles, not overwhelming a causal reader.

I still support the idea of portals, but I want to see your proposed layout so I can see exactly were you are going with it. --Mnb'z 05:31, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Read Spang's and Mordillo's comments on the short version. They support the categories portal - perhaps not for my reasoning but because it's the way Wikipedia does it: parody of that. I still aim to get good, non-featured articles promoted - what I say in the short version of the forum. Regardless of category, regardless of topic. Broad categories can include more divergent articles than narrow ones, and I don't see how having narrow category portals would make for less data. Theoretically - how would you aim them so you hit max audience? If you have a Games portal, you (or someone) can have a Sonic special month, for instance. Or two months, I don't make the decisions. After that, it's something else. If you have a more specialized portal, your audience will have read it in those two months anyway. -- Style Oranssiviiva.jpg Guide 15:37, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
I really don't how the portals on the broad topics can effectively promote good, non-featured articles when there are 50-100 featured articles in that category. The good non-features are normally 2nd tier articles, otherwise they would be featured. Yes, there are exceptions; and there is a strong biased against certain types of articles on VFH, such as intentionally offensive, very politically incorrect, or video-game character articles. But overall, like I said before, I can't see what good highlighting a few good articles would do when there are dozens of highlights on the same topic. --Mnb'z 16:49, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

=Also[edit source]

I think the portal idea might be overwhelmed with unimportant aspects, and I'm not sure how the cabal will take private crypto-featuring. I'm leaning more to the idea of creating "semi-portals" on the category pages. For example, something like this User:Mnbvcxz/sand4. Although, I haven't worked out a system for choosing good articles yet. I'm leaning more toward a "free for all" posting system, like how a wiki works. (I.e. good articles can be added or removed by whoever.) I'm not opposed to a portal system, but I'm not sure if it will really be that helpful.

The list of featured/quasis and articles needing work are initially bot generated, but can and probably will be updated and corrected by hand. The articles needing written would probably work the same was as the list of good articles. --Mnb'z 18:36, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

I think the Cabal will just see what people do with it. Spang just told me "common sense" should be enough, and I tend to agree. Reverting is quick for them. Also, referring to earlier discussion, there seems to be nothing to prevent you from adding for instance Sonic as a sub-portal to the Games portal. That's how Wikipedia's stuff works. -- Style Oranssiviiva.jpg Guide 08:11, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
