Uncyclopedia:Customs Station
We all got here, one way or another. But telling HOW we got here could add some small window into how to better get more pathetic losers users to our site. It might also let us know how we would go about promoting Uncyclopedia, if that's at all necessary, which it probably isn't. Ok, well, since this is my horrible idea, I'll go first....

I got here from a link on Blue's News to the John Carmack article. It wasn't that great, but I started searching and found War on Terra, among other hilarious things, which kinda blew me away. Circa early Summer of 2005.--<<>> 18:08, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

I was contributing to (generally) the humanities desk at wikipedia, and somebody noted uncyclopedia in a response. I checked it out, thought it was kind of funny, and wrote a couple of articles anonymously that were immediately huffed. I began learning definitions (what's a noob? what's burninated mean?), and had a conversation with some users and admins (notably Sbluen and Tompkins) as I/we created a worthwhile article...Vincent Van Gogh's Things To Do on a Rainy Afternoon.--Shandon 18:37, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

I've heard of Uncyclopedia in some news articles early this year I think, but didn't really visit it much at the time. Then one day (in March I think) fark.com linked to the UnNews article about Microsoft copyrighting the letter "e". I found that hilarious and checked back for other UnNews stories frequently, finally starting to write my own in April. --Composure1 19:42, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

I honestly have no idea anymore. It was May 2005, and I remember laughing myself sick at Kitten Huffing (which was a much shorter, funnier article at the time), but I can't actually remember how I got here. I can't seem to find my way out either.... -- Sir Mhaille (talk to me)

Rcmurphy[edit source]
I found Uncyclopedia around early March (2005) via a link on the Straight Dope message board, which I only read sporadically these days. My first "major" project was working on the original Zork with Algorithm. Back in those days you could check every single edit on Recent Changes easily - sometimes there were only a couple an hour. The front page wasn't protected and even after we instituted a "featured article" system anyone could change the highlighted article at will. Good times... —rc (t) 20:07, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

December, 2005. I was starting to get interested in Wikipedia, about to make my first edits when an asshole a good friend of mine told me "hey, you would probably like Uncyclopedia better". I got so strongly seduced by its hypnotizing powers that I started a "Vote me for Noob of the Month Campaign". When I realized I had no chance I quit the campaign and gave my support to user:Suresh. My shrink suggested I come here to work out some issues. I was also sleeping with her at the time, so it was doubly imperative that I listen. She told me it would be a good way to get past my "delusions of grandeur", having strangers mercilessly lambast my writing and tell me that I suck. Unfortunately that never happened, as I was immediately embraced with the wide open arms of an inordinate amount of users and several sockpuppets. Of course, I was hooked. Actually, it was a brief stint on wikipedia which brought me here, but that one was already taken. -- Imrealized ...hmm? 00:15, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

I stumbled upon Wikipedia's Bad Jokes and Other Deleted Nonsense last June. One day I noticed that someone pasted a very funny Calvin and Hobbes vandalism to Wikipedia's entry on the comic strip. Someone immediately said was from Uncyclopedia. Intrigued, I clicked over, saw Ernest Hemingway's Cookery Corner, and got hooked. Sitting during free period in school, searching wikipedia looking for anything funny to relieve the monotony of the standard schoolday. I went from joke, to humor, to pun and eventually made my way to parody. After begrudgingly reading through parody (because I had not read it and I like parody) I spotted a sentence at the very bottom about Wikipedia has it's own humorous parody, Uncyclopedia. After reading about half the page and stifling my laughter I found it, the link to Uncycs main page. I don't recall exactly, but it involved a group of ubergeek hackers I used to hang out with on SILC. It also had something to do with Wikipedia. A few things came together at the right time, coupled with Splarka's hospitality and training that made me into the humourless admin you see today. At the Kingdom of Loathing's forums, there's a subforum called "Random Ramblings" which I was a semiregular of of which I was a semiregular. It's roughly equivalent to an off-topic forum, and was home to the funnier of the people there. Someone posted the link to Uncyc's article on us, which was at the time a rather pathetic stub, and a bunch of us from the forum decided to improve it. Operation Degrassi Knoll was successful, and most left. I, however, stayed, and started to look around the rest of the site. A regular reader of my blog [[1]] told me that I was made for this place. They also knew me from the H2G2 [[2]] site where I used to contribute under the name of "Dr. Deckchair Funderlik" (not my real name). I was actually really nervous about contributing anything here, and as a consequence, I didn't. Until about 10 months later, when the first "Poo Lit" competition was run, so I entered with Bouncy Castle and lost. That made me laugh and laugh. I waited a week, gripping my monitor hard and licking my keyboard, and then I self-nommed the Castle and it was a big hit. The rest is history, with a dash of sociology and a huge stumpy lump of psychology thrown in. Next stop is writing a book full of large articles and trying to shift it on the black market. I've been on Wikipedia (en, fr) for a little under two years now, playing mostly a bit part at best, but was a long-time fan of BJAODN back in the days when we didn't have much of anywhere else to put our nonsense. (Mind you, it's gone downhill since then - but that just means it has served its purpose and we now have other outlets to handle any sudden temptations to lease an entire server in the biggest datacentre in Vancouver and use it to dump brazillions of pages of patented nonsense™ on every nation from Taiwan to Finland to Brazil).
It's in some ways unfortunate that en.wp has become so political these days, with the endless agendas and revert wars. Wikipédia isn't like that in other languages, where the community is smaller - perhaps some things scale poorly on the non-technical side. Still, they have gathered an impressive amount of info over the years and I do still turn up there occasionally, even if it's just long enough to get a couple more pieces of useless talk-page spam from some robot with an attitude. --Carlb 00:50, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

It was a cold, wet wintry night in December 2005 that I had the (at least what seemed at the time) great idea of mixing my ritalin supppliment with some weird mushrooms I found in the back of my garden the weekend before. Maniacally, I concocted this potion and decided to have a slurp. Alas, instead of having some kind of rush, it merely created a sort of Jekyll and Hyde moment. As I started metamorphosing into a giant cockroach and the floor turned to cheese - I noticed something. Something was writing on the wall - the letters were twisted and contorted, but I could make out a word. One word: Uncyclopedia. I awoke, sweating, on my bed. It was just a dream - no cream of ritalin and mushroom soup at all. That was, until I noticed the potion spilt on the floor. I can barely admit it, but they say its the first step to being cured. I was a Wikipedian Bastard Operator From Hell. You know all the urban legends about BOFHs that you hear about on the net. Well, I'm here to tell ya its all true. I did it all, conned passwords from the n00bs, stole candy from babies, and tripped little ole ladies. And then one day, they closed the doors to Wikipedia forever. Yeah, I deserved it, but it still hurt just the same. It hurt, not because I liked any of those bastards, but because I was addicted to that substance called Wiki. Shit, I even free based it a few times. And then it was all gone.
Days later, right in the middle of a dream, a figure like Chronarion, or Todd Lyons came to me, alot like Jesus during a heat wave, beckoning me forth and hither. I remember in my dream there was this little thing in the corner laughing, and they called it a Splaka. The only thing I can remember saying in my dream was, "What the FUCK?!?" And then swish, it was all over. The next morning, I made about 10 pounds of mashed potatoes for breakfast and created a mashed potato mountain that looked exactly like Castle Rock. Mandaliet[edit source]
Hi, I'm Mandaliet.
Like other people, I was looking at Wikipedia's Bad Jokes and Other Deleted Nonsense about a year ago, and I thought it was really funny. I also thought that it would be neat if there were a wiki that existed solely for this kind of stuff.
Then a little while later I saw a link to Uncyclopedia in a Wikipedian's user page. I clicked on the link and liked what I saw, especially after thinking that something like this should exist. (I think I may have even thought of the name Uncyclopedia as something to call that kind of thing. Ah, originality.) In fact, I thought most of it was hilarious. This wore off after a few weeks. Then I started writing a few articles, and one was featured. At this point I had started talking to the admins in IRC, which gave me a different perspective on the whole thing. This caused me to stop writing articles for a while, because my audience had changed; instead of just being concerned about what the average reader would think, I added the admins (many of whom now knew me) to that list, so the way I thought about writing articles was different. I no longer felt I could write just anything, but I had to write something good, especially since one of my articles had been featured and I had to live up to that again, although I haven't had any more features. After a while I sort of lost interest, but then I came back, and now I'm back, and I even write things sometimes.
The rest, as they say, is edit.
Orion Blastar[edit source]
I created Orion Blastar to be one of my alter-ego Internet characters. A Space Pirate from 4096 AD in the Traveller RPG who travelled back in time to Earth. I made a blog and I was posting funny stuff on various forums etc. I saw an Uncyclopedia article on Slashdot and decided to join after posting as an anonymous IP for a while. I am still trying to be funny elsewhere, but Uncyclopedia seems to be one of the few places that actual get my jokes, and don't find me annoying or a troll or whatever. I had been on Wikipedia before that and Wikibooks and some other Wikis. I really got serious with Wiki in Uncyclopedia though. I even did an alt.suicide.holiday type cyber death in November 2004 when a lot of people online harassed me about my jokes etc on various forums and Internet sites. I found that I can let loose my humor on Uncyclopedia, and the worse that can happen is that my articles get deleted. Hrodulf, a short retrospective (abridg'd)[edit source]
I started as a registered user on April 1, 2006, under a different username. Prior to that, I had made a small number of changes and articles as an ip. This is the earliest edit I could find by me as an ip that still survives on the site.
I simply don't remember how I learned about Uncyclopedia. I was interested in Wikipedia first, so it's possible I learned about it through Wikipedia.
Early on as a raw n00b (I still consider myself somewhat n00b-ish) I learned the Uncyc gospel of "write a short piece of crap here that isn't funny to anyone but you, and it will get huffed within a minute." In response to this, I ended up getting into a minor argument about the use of NRV, which eventually (due to more discussions of this nature) led to Uncyclopedia:How To Get Started Editing, arguably my first contribution to the site that was actually worth something to anybody (although it's much improved now from the original version, by both myself and others).
That's about it. I created an advice column that's sort of floundering now, need to get back into running that the right way (work has been riding my ass lately big time). I am pleased with the unnews material I've managed to come up with; I always liked the onion, and it's fun that here I get the opportunity to write that kind of satirical news-type material that reflects my opinions on the current lousy world situation in a humorous way.
All and all, I'm glad I ended up here. --Hrodulf 02:19, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Purely by chance 1.5 years ago through a hyperlink to You have two cows, from a linkboard that specializes in off-the-wall stuff. Since I am a great admirer (though not a contributor yet) of Wikipedia, and had previously written short parody/satire pieces on occasion, I instantly fell in lust with the concept(!). I consider meself extremely fortunate to have gotten in this close to the ground floor, and hope to continue contributing to this whopping edifice of literary mayhem. --DW III 06:06, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

I was searching wikipedia yesterday for "toot flute". No articles! As I was slightly away with the faeries at the time I thought I'd see if "ring stinger" (a very hot curry) and "chocolate starfish" (Anat: The bit that stings.) were included. Ha! They call it an encyclopaedia (Brit: we just like our a's - probably due to the Public School System.) Anyway, just started hitting the StumbleUpon button in firefox [4] and found you! I seem to be way behind... Nov 2006, I used Wikipedia so much, I thought I'd give something back. I told my friends and they said "Wikipedia Sucks, Uncyclopedia is much better" So I went there. A while back ago, I was told by friends about Wikipedia and the fact that it can be edited, etc. etc. I was eager to experiment with Wikipedia, and I wrote a trash article. Hours later my article was deleted and I got this message on my talk page saying "Please do not create hoaxes". I clicked the link (and others to see how Wikipedia worked), and little to my knowledge, was a link to Uncyclopedia saying that you could write satire articles. The rest, is history-- 02:12, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
General Comments / Criticisms / Bribes / Prayers / Praises / etc (place your thing about how you got here ABOVE this line, comments BELOW)[edit source]
So many of our good contributors came from wikipedia. This contradicts the general belief that wikipedia only send us stupid vandals who think this is everythingoespedia. So I think we should conduct subtle campaigns to drive more suitable wikipedians to our site. Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about an organized campaign, but rather droping coments on wikipedian talk pages like: "what's wrong with you, do you think you are at uncyclopedia? That kind of content is not accepted here", sporadically, when you come to an appropiate uncyclopedian candidate. Today I was passing by Wikipedia:en:Talk:Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius, a talk page about an article on a tale by Borges. I saw a comment by an annonymous I.P demanding the article to start with lies in the style of Borges, I droped a comment of the kind, and then I realized we should do this more often.---Asteroid B612 (aka Rataube) - Ñ 18:51, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- How subtle are we talking, because lacking enough subtlety could get someone banned. I think it's fine to drop a link on a talk page every once in awhile, but it's a bad idea to do much more than that. After all, we don't want a bad rep. Actually, I'd recommend more uncyc users that use IRC to hang out in #wikipedia or one of the associated channels. Their are alot of funny people in there, and I'm sure it wouldn't take much to convince them to take a look. Don't show them any of the bad articles though :) t o m p k i n s blah. ﺞوﻦ וףה ՃՄ ண்ஸ ފއހ วอฏม +տ trade websites 23:20, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- Yeh, only every once in a while. But we have to aware so to spot the right occasions. ---Asteroid B612 (aka Rataube) - Ñ 00:33, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
Maybe this isn't the most subtle approach. Uncyclopedia has its place, as a repository for text which is amusing but a little too silly for the tastes of some Wikipedians. Pages like UnSource:List of acronyms and fr:Lapin rose are Wikipedia text which have been tagged GFDL and given a home after Wikipedia didn't want them in their original catégorie:article insolite forms. There are links there that say that the silly version has been moved here, and attribution back - fair enough as the stuff originated there, not here. They have their place for us (as a source of background info, as one needs to be familiar with a topic before being able to joke about it) and we have our place for them (as somewhere to move silliness that didn't quite look pedantic, serious or encyclopædia-like in tone). As much as I believe the two must retain some level of independence (so am in favour of creating a project for a Canadian Wikimedia Chapter but am at the same time opposed to the idea of persons outside Uncyclopedia controlling domains or other identifiers for this project). I don't see the two as natural enemies, just as different enough in origin and purpose that eah must follow and evolve along its own independent path. --Carlb 00:50, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
- Notice that it's their users (some specific type of them) I'm saying we need to bring, not their rejected content (we don't want to be their dumping ground). Wikipedia and Uncyc have many things in common. Same skills needed to contribute through the same software and both atract intelligent highly educated people who like to write (both too atract other kind of people not always desired in both sites, but that's a different story). The difference is what kind of stuff we like to write. So when we find a wikipedian who wants to write the same stuff that we do, then we have the ideal uncyclopedian (if he writes good, of course). About the independece and the domain thing I'll anwer in your talkpage---Asteroid B612 (aka Rataube) - Ñ 02:16, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
- If you want to encourage more visitors (presumbably as a snub to the site that shall not be named) to the site, and want them to see the good articles, then surely would this be not a good time to start ordering printed Uncyclopedias? - Keitei tried to get Uncyclopedia in print going, but as far as I know, nobody cared. I throughly recommend Uncyclopedia Americana. --The Rt. Hon. BarryC MUN (Symposium!) Sigh. Double Sigh. 13:26, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
The thing that really depresses me is that there is no EverythingGoesPedia. I made a proposal for a site called "Vandalpedia" which would supposedly be totally dedicated to wiki vandalism with absolutely no redeeming value whatsoever, so that vandalous "contributions" to all other wikis could be directed there instead, but the Wikia staff rejected it. --Nerd42eMailTalkUnMetaWPediah2g2 18:13, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

- The site that goes unnamed is roughly for that purpose, but they have nazi dictator admins that remove stuff. Their admins are just vandals with special deletion abilities... 21:21, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, but compared to that site that goes unnamed, a Vandalpedia would represent an improvement. Then again, a landfill site would represent an improvement compared to that mess. --Carlb 15:11, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- We should have an Uncyclopedia Dump where we put all of our deleted crap, like the "1000 Typing... Hamlet... thing" except make it a real wiki and devise some sort of way to move everything that has been deleted to there. The more I think about it the more I approve of it... The main thing to do in recruiting Wikipedians is to find ones who can write well and have a sense of humour. (Humor will do in a pinch.) A particularly scurvy trick is to tell them the wiki politics suck less here.
