You've probably heard about this already, but it'd be really nice if you could check out VFH and see if there's anything you like in there. I'm asking you this because VFH is really low in votes and you're a (more) regular user (than me) and you've got a good taste when it comes to articles. You can absolutely do that if you like, feel free. Just make sure it's funny, and accessible to folks other than those who play Fire Emblem (it's a game, right?). Read that manual that I'm sure somebody left on your talk page when you joined. The reason I put that article on VFD is that it's too long and does not contain enough funny (in my opinion, anyway). And we like to think that articles work better when they shy away from jokes that are only understood by a small group, although inside jokes can be made hilarious, too. Remember, it's nothing personal.

Saving an article while on VFD is a time-honored tradition. You should either mention there that you are undertaking the job or make a copy in your userspace, in case the vote goes against you quickly; that will save you from begging an Admin to un-huff it so you can continue working. May I suggest that you write change histories with less obscenity, disdain, and grandiloquence? If you want to crack wise and/or get on a soapbox, write an article. If you want to correct another user, get on a talk page; or, in the case of Anon, just roll him back and let him be. On the edit to Robert Burns: Anon seems to have something in mind, and a knowledge of the subject matter that is greater than mine. I would give him some string and see what else he's got, though eventually someone will have to step in, if only to correct grammar and spelling.

On the edit to Honda: Whew! Drug-induced. Verges on funny, but seems to almost have an axe to grind. Again, if this clump of butter remains, eventually someone will have to spread it around the surface more smoothly. Here again, I would proceed slowly and see what else he's got. Honda just plain needs an owner. (Sorry; I drive a Hyundai.) The intro is just as rambling, unencyclopedic, and error-filled. Both the intro and the new bit are individual essays that keep the article from flowing. Have now looked at the entire Robert Burns (and the whole change history, where Anon does seem to talk to you briefly). Again with the pontificating in the Change Summary! but I agree with you, not just in the overuse of templates, but in the use, ever, of any template that purports to guide the user in how to understand the article he hasn't yet begun to read. You know, up until about a month ago, I never used to leave an edit summary. And then somebody mentioned that people should leave a summary when undoing changes, to explain why they were doing it, especially when they weren't just undoing vandalism.

Patrol widget

This is cute! but not exactly what I want.

  • On the new "patrol these changes" button in RecentChanges, I especially like not being taken to a new page for confirmation, which invites me to return somewhere where I never want to go. However, having the button here invites me to patrol 12 changes independent of whether I've seen them. What I'd like is to be able to click on "12 changes", see everything that changed, "11 intermediate revisions not shown," and have a [Patrol all these changes] button on the diff display.
  • On patrolling a single change, [Patrol this change] is already on the diff page, so I'd tend to use that, despite getting diverted to another page.
  • It might be nice to see the unpatrolled attribute, and to signify a patrol, from any History page.

In summary, your user interface is easy and unintrusive, but it's the diff page (or multi-diff page) where I want a way to signify that I've reviewed everything shown on the screen. Spıke ¬ 16:30 2-Jun-12

Hi Spike!
  1. On having a "patrol these changes" on the diff page: there is no way to query the API for the intermediate RCIDs of those changes (and the RCID is the single bit of data you need to patrol a page). There is a workaround, and I was planning to employ it when I got around to making version 2.0.
  2. It is handy to patrol single (or even multiple) changes without looking at them. What changes would you want to do that with? Those made by established users who aren't auto-patrolled yet (such as those guys who never do anything but add interwiki links), and for users who are changing pages in their user-space. I used it when "Alcohol" categorized a metric fucktonne of images. Oh, and also for pages which "belong" to the editor, like Medical school.
  3. It would be very useful to patrol unpatrolled changes from the history page. So of course the API doesn't allow you get an RCID from anywhere other than Special:RecentChanges. Why? I don't know. Ask Wikia.
  4. The realtime function is a whole other can of worms. It loads asynchronously with the page, and my script only runs through the DOM tree when you first load the page. I probably could integrate my script with that one, but I'm guessing the original author didn't leave many hooks lying around, so it would probably end up being a spaghetti-code mess unless I rewrote the whole thing. I'll have to look, though.
TL;DR version: #1 is doable. #2 is there for a reason. #3 is apparently not possible, and #4 may not be possible without rewriting the realtime script.
As for a dynamic watchlist function, I can probably do that without much trouble. I'll get back to you on it.

Thank you! hardly too long to read. Thanks for describing the magnitude of the problem; I had assumed that all the Realtime widget did was add code to the page to pull a new copy every five seconds. Wikia might benefit from your insight as a coder, over mine as a user with a wish list, if you'd care to communicate with them. I am not indeed going to mark edits patrolled without looking at them; at the least, even the edits of a trusted user might need clerical post-edit (Romartus!); at best, anything I see might set me off in a new and worthwhile direction. By the way, marking a page creation as patrolled is for some reason a different procedure from marking an edit as patrolled, and I'm not up to speed on marking creations--sometimes I see the button and sometimes I don't. On page-creation: when a new page is created and there are no subsequent unpatrolled edits, there is just a single "diff", and so the "patrol" link is easily visible. However, when a new page is created and there are subsequent edits, they are all grouped together. If you open the group and look at the first edit, you will find a "(patrol these changes)" link, which will patrol the page creation and the changes grouped with it. This is because the software doesn't supply an "[N] changes" link for changes on new pages. (Why, I would very much like to know.)
I haven't yet looked at the realtime code; if it really does just pull a new version of the page every five seconds, that wouldn't be too difficult to fix for.
As for Wikia...yech. Unless I were getting paid for it, I'd never want to work with them. The new legend "(patrol this page)" on an unpatrolled page creation does not seem to be inserted in the right place. I have the timestamp in a different font and your legend is picking up this font; your other patrol legends are in the same font as "diff" and "hist". Our beef with Wikia is Inside Baseball. Our main page is our primary interface to the Real World and it should no more be used to posture about how we stood up to the Stinking Capitalists than on how Mr777 likes Bronies. Is it really necessary for that template to have an image_map in addition to an image? The wikipedia one doesn't. I did a javascript search, and it appears that 23 of the 57 pages that use that template use image_map. Nav Templates Gone Wild

On the bottom of pages such as Mexico, nav templates are proliferating out of control. This page has one for North American countries (there is a separate one for Central American countries), followed by one for Countries of the World. And they look dissimilar. ...is that your rewrite puts a [[link]] at the beginning of a line. And MediaWiki gets confused when it sees that, because its parser is a retarded mess consisting of thirty gerbils in a bag, and a fifteen-thousand-character regular expression. Sticking a <nowiki/> at the beginning of the line effectively slaps it in the face and says "Yo! Paragraph here, fucker!"
Ta-da! That simple. I figured it out so quickly because...none of the other articles that use that template had the same problem.

The first one does, but I'm not sure where. I stumbled across it when I added Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups The second one might, but it's an iffy one. I noticed in Wikia emails they give an option of "See changes since last visit." This means there is a record of when a logged in user last visits a particular page. That issue I had off site with repeated edits to a page. It looks as though the exported files from Mediawiki v1.19 are subtly different to those from v1.16, so that it will import the same revision multiple times when going into v1.12. Which explains that lovely history we were looking at the other day. (older one v newer one.)

Also, I've started going back through the unpatrolled edits, but without quite the same fervour as I was earlier. I know you created a patrol grouped thingy, but it was still in infancy when I was taking my enforced sabbatical. The way to include my script is the same as the old way (I think, can't remember). It's pretty much done (for now):

Fade-in and fade-out

Is this animation a result of my recent browser upgrade, or the MediaWiki upgrade, or is this some sorcery of yours? I am offended by my processor expending cycles on such Glitz. Are you talking about when you expand a group of changes? I use Opera, and I'm not seeing any fade or animation; it's definitely not due to my code. I don't care for silly frills like that, but it is extremely easy to do with jQuery, so it's tempting to use. How to turn it off? About the fade effect: I WAS WRONG, as detailed here (boy, do I feel stupid). Try putting this code in your <skin>.js file:
jQuery.fx.off = true;
If that doesn't work, try wrapping it in an onReady callback function, like so:
$( document ).ready( function() { jQuery.fx.off = true; } )

Your share tab is awsome. I like the colour and placement. The only thing is, every time I go to scroll down, I usually hover the mouse over the tab (really quickly) and it opens up and stays opened. I suggest doing two things:

  1. Unless the mouse stays in the vecinity of the tab, it should close back
  2. Only open the tab with a click.

You're the second person who's said that; however, there's just one slight issue with hovering: if you try to move over the facebook or google+ bubble that pops up when you click them, the tab closes, and takes the bubble with it. I was going to make it click-only, but I thought with a mouseover, people would be more likely to actually use it. Oh, well. I only have two of those and neither one is on the Internet. My browser is at 1GHz or so. My RecentChanges is set to 200 entries and, depending on the quality of the connection, the above script still times out before it gives me any way to patrol changes. Spıke ¬ 00:19 11-Aug-12

Since the first time you asked, I discovered that the issue is caused by the new "enhanced recent changes" implementation. It uses the custom plugin jQuery.makeCollapsible(), which works OK for things like navboxes, but when it's used on 200 or more elements, it's garbage. I've heard complaints about it from numerous people, including Wikipedia members. The fix is really, really simple: remove the mw-collapsible CSS class from ChangesList.php, write a new style rule, and then write a new onclick handler using jQuery.live(). However, as we don't have server access, there's no way for me to fix it directly. Another idea: I might be able to hack jQuery.makeCollapsible() to ignore recentChanges elements, since it waits until document.ready to loop through the page.
