Forum:PLS January 2011
PLS is now beginning to take shape now. I have the privilege of chairing the most prestigious writing competition on Uncylopedia, and I will do my best to make this the best PLS I can. I will be about for consultation on it and you are free to discuss matters with me. I have decided that I would like to hold PLS on January 18th, allowing me plenty of time to sort out judges and organise the applicable pages.
This will be the official forum, and I would like to start the process of recruiting judges now. As in previous years judges cannot enter, so preferably people who are likely to be great contributors will naturally be weighted against as potential judges and vice versa.
There are the following categories Best Article, Best Noob Article, Best Rewrite and Best Illustrated article categories. I would like to minimise people being pissed at not being chosen for their preferred categories, so in order to achieve this I ask only that you put you name down if you would like to judge.
I would prefer ‘mature’ judges to keep track of the dates during the competition and minimise me going around the judges to make sure they are fulfilling their roles. I would also ask that each potential Judges have a subpage, which gives some indication as to why they voted on each article. Pee review criteria is best – this is voluntary, but will hopefully build the good will of everyone taking part.
Thanks for reading, and the very best of luck to the writers taking part,

- Without jumping the gun, I'd rather that this competition was an end in itself. If a cash prize was delivered, I would rather it went to charity (of the winners choice, an no, not their own bank account - a charity which everyone knows). I'm happy to chip in 50/60 pounds for this and a few others her may also help out. Would this be something you/PLS entrants would be interested in?--Sycamore (Talk) 18:13, December 28, 2010 (UTC)

- Lame? Come on Sycamore. Collaborations have nothing to do with how lame we are, or even the fact that we "can't complete something." This is a wiki - we should foster and encourage collaboration. -- The Zombiebaron 04:47, January 5, 2011 (UTC)
- I agree completely collaborations are what I'm about - but not as a part of a competition - entrants have to fight, doubling up in this context only weakens this and undermines individual competition--Sycamore (Talk) 07:30, January 5, 2011 (UTC)
- I disagree that "entrants have to fight," PLS should just be a fun reason to write an article or two within a constrained period of time. -- The Zombiebaron 07:40, January 5, 2011 (UTC)

- Spiteful yes, because Uncyclopedia is Uncyclopedia, not an Ayn Rand novel. Also an actual yes because this is a cool idea. -- 03:39, January 5, 2011 (UTC)
- So since it's done out of spite, you're here wallow in defeat or to take a crack at some guy on an online community? How about you help 'contribute' instead to this competition.--Sycamore (Talk) 07:21, January 5, 2011 (UTC)
- Hey Sycamore, guess what. I'm a guy in and online community too! And I am going to "contribute" (since obviously I've contributed nothing to this site at all in the past, as you would forever like to believe in whatever austere mind bubble you live in) to the PLS by participating, otherwise I would have already volunteered to judge. --
- Besides, the "spiteful" was a joke and an exaggeration. If you were able to think that I am perhaps slightly a decent human being and not a mechanical devil out to slay all fun and order on the internet then we might be able to get along better. If you can't tell, this post is also exaggerated (this is also an olive branch). -- 07:12, January 6, 2011 (UTC)

It isn't a good 'idea' and obviously so. It completely undermines the idea of competition: we award PLS on the basis that someone does their best on an article, not double up to make up for their own deficit of effort: in the mainspace all articles are collaborations, in competitions they're not. The collab element means that two mediocre writers can produce something more complete in the limited time frame, as opposed to a good writer actually doing something genuinely good but unfinished. Also it's completely unfair, in a collab someone always does more - someone who contributes 30% can 'win' PLS (also easy to see how drama could form there) as well as a writer who writes the bulk can look forward to having a completed work thanks to his/her 'helper'. Overall it's a very mediocre way to participate in this competition, while being the life blood of article writing outside of it. Is that clear?--Sycamore (Talk) 07:15, January 5, 2011 (UTC)
- No offense intended, but that's garbage. The idea of PLS is to promote the creation of good articles. Those that compete in collabs do exactly that- produce the better quality article. While I rarely work on a collab basis, I can understand that a collab makes the best use of the talents of all writers involved. If Sog, Hype and Mhaille all worked on a single article, I'd guess that it would be a fantastic article, and deserving of an award. If I LIKE PIE and Thomesfan666 did a collab, it probably wouldn't be as good. It's still valid in the terms of one article is better than another, and the reality is that writers don't win these competitions anyway - it's the articles they produce that are judged and that win.Nominally Humane! some time Wednesday, 07:30, Jan 5 2011 UTC
- So if I LIKE PIE put 100% into his best article entry and loses, he can put 60% in and get a win? It's unfair and lowers the bar.--Sycamore (Talk) 07:33, January 5, 2011 (UTC)
- I agree with Puppy. The Pooh Lit Surprise is meant to be a fun way of generating high quality content for the site. Also, if there were a specific section for collaborations, perhaps there would be less collaborations in the other sections. -- The Zombiebaron 07:36, January 5, 2011 (UTC)

All I'm seeing is blah blah blah. Right now there aren't enough judges to have a Best Collaboration, even if everybody wants there to be such a category. And even if there were enough, we'd have like two people still eligible to enter PLS anyway since a judge can't enter. Now please quit arguing. Sycamore is the one who decided to hold it since nobody else was going to say crap about it, as EMC is prohibited from doing so. When you're the PLS manager, then you can make the rules and all that. MegaPleb • Dexter111344 • Complain here 07:38, January 5, 2011 (UTC)
- Well we're obviously not doing a Best Collab section this time, Dexter. I was talking about the idea of doing one in a future PLS. -- The Zombiebaron 07:45, January 5, 2011 (UTC)

- Syc has the final say, and I wouldn't be entering a collab anyway. I was more arguing with the faulty logic. Short answer is "no" because we don't have the resources and should have brought up the idea months ago if we were going to do it. But next time... Alternately
How would everyone here feel about possibly doing some separate, less official-like writing competition based on collaboration?
- If it involves pie, I'd be all for it. ~ -- 23:20, 5 January, 2011 (UTC)
- That's not a bad idea. I say we give the collab contest sexual themes, like "manajatwa", "butt buddies", and "Lyrithya eating pie". -- Thankful Kippy Share blessings Bountiful harvest 23:24, Jan. 5, 2011
- What I have so far going on in my head is 3 categories for the competition: One for collabs of 2 people, one for groups of 3, and possibly one for four or more (if that doesn't prove to be popular, then the groups of three category could just be extended to groups of three or more). Judges can enter any category that isn't their own, and entries are unlimited, so long as it isn't the same duo/group for each article. Opinions?

Rewrites
Does it still count as a rewrite if the original article gets deleted in the meantime? ~ 19:13, 10 January 2011
- I should think so - if you tell me the title, or you wish to keep your idea secret you can email me if you like. Since there was an original and in recent history of the site, I think it should be fine. Preferably if you intend to rewrite the said article, bring this up on VFD as it is preferable for judges to see a comparison, or have an op restore the old version to your userspace if it is huffed.--Sycamore (Talk) 19:48, January 10, 2011 (UTC)
- Shiny, shiny. Would that still apply if the original article was deleted a week ago and was on a completely stupid topic that shouldn't even have had an article to it, though? ~ 20:36, 10 January 2011
- I'm gonna bud in and give my opinion here, but Sycamore and the judges for the rewrite category would have the final say. I'd say no, it shouldn't count. If it was deleted before the PLS and you're intending to enter it as a rewrite, it would signal - at least to me - that you've begun to work on it some point prior to PLS, even if it wasn't on the site. Not saying that you have, Lyr, but it'd be best to avoid that all together. MegaPleb • Dexter111344 • Complain here 06:43, January 11, 2011 (UTC)
- By that logic, I could have been working on anything prior to the thing... which if I wasn't so interminably lazy, I could have. Why would it have had to have been deleted? What difference would that actually make? ~ 10:48, 11 January 2011

serious, boring and unfunnny questions
Thanks a million for running this competition. They are always groovy. First question
1. Is this competition real? there are a few pages recently that seem real and become a joke or very eleborate jokes that only a few people understand. 2. If it is real, will it be a 24 hour long competition? Longer, shorter? Or based on articles already written/edited? Keep in mind some people live outside of North America. 3. Are we allowed to chose our topic (in which case im sure a few competitors are already writing articles) or rewrite (in which im sure a few competitors are already rewriting articles). Or will it be like happy monkeys competition where people are paired at the last minute and give each other titles/article names on their user pages just before the competition begins? or something else? Or maybe I dont understand. Or maybe this competition isn't real. 5. Could you weigh in a few judges who aren't super regulars on the behind scene stuff or who vote for hilights so much or for voting in general. I don't expect to win anything but it would be GREAT to have different points of view on the panel. 6. Thanks a million for organizing it. My birthday is the 18th, and I do have a life, so I don't think I can compete unless its 24 hours long in which case id love to judge.
p.s. the colaboration competition is an AWSOME idea for a separate competition. Someone REALLY should organise it! --Shabidoo 02:44, January 12, 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, it is real.
- The closing date for entries will be around the 31st. Nobody lives outside North America.
- Contestants get to choose. Theoretically you could start writing an article before this, but judges do check histories. We rely in the contestants entering into the spirit and not cheating, however. After all, if you can't write an article that is likely to win in 2 weeks then you probably wouldn't do it given a months time.
- 8 inches
- Judging is by volunteer, and everyone has differing views here.
- Feel free to volunteer. Basically if you aren't going to write but want to be involved volunteering is a good idea, but I would suggest doing a few PEE reviews first so you get an idea on how to review. Nominally Humane! some time Wednesday, 03:19, Jan 12 2011 UTC
- I just realised just now that PLS stands for poo lit surpise. The format isnt written anywhere. So, it is not on Jan the 18th? How long does the competition last? I honestly do not understand the format. When does it start? Is it a day long? Month long? the closing date for entires is Jan 31st as opposed to Jan 18th? --Shabidoo 03:26, January 12, 2011 (UTC)
