IMPORTANT: Please read this first. Notification from the Goa Tse Clan-ULLA, helping destroy SOPA.

Playing on ATS (Above Top Secret) I saw that Reddit is calling for a SOPA blackout of sites on January 18th, from 8 a.m to 8 p.m. East Coast American time. Jimbo Wales put up a note on wikipedia that he'd like to do the same, and they are probably setting up a vote on it now. The more sites the better coverage a "protest" will have. Joe brought the topic up on a forum a week or so ago, and since the protest is becoming more organized, let's discuss and vote on this. Viva internet freedom! Aleister 5:16 12-1-'12

Vote: Uncyclopedia should join the anti-SOPA protest on January 18th

If even 20-something people are made aware of SOPA and its implications by our act, I'll consider the blackout a success. It's less about gaining publicity and more about standing by a cause. 11. Support. I wanted to stay out of this for my cluelessness, but the more I read up on these dealies, the more concerned I become. The wording seems to be downright dangerous, and regardless of what might be intended by those pushing for the bills, they could apparently put Uncyclopedia and any other sites operating off or even indexing user-submitted content (search engines, wikis, blogs, forums, art galleries, writing things, cow things, etc) in a position to be shut down merely on an accusation of copyright thingy stuff. Even with the current laws, just trying to fight the same kind of accusations has been known to bankrupt hosting sites, but it would seem these would make the accusations far more widely applicable, to any form of content, and in the process perhaps harder to fight as well. So tell me, sued for some copyright violation, how would Wikia fair? How would the Wikimedia Foundation? How would Reddit and Youtube and Buttbook and who knows what all else you young people use so much fair? 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy.png 15:31, 14 January 2012

Jimbo Wales statement on Wikipedia: I'm all in favor of it, and I think it would be great if we could act quickly to coordinate with Reddit. I'd like to talk to our government affairs advisor to see if they agree on this as useful timing, but assuming that's a greenlight, I think that matching what Reddit does (but in our own way of course) per the emerging consensus on how to do it, is a good idea. But that means we need to move forward quickly on a concrete proposal and vote - we don't have the luxury of time that we usually have, in terms of negotiating with each other for weeks about what's exactly the best possible thing to do. As I understand it, the Foundation is talking to people about how we can geolocate and guide people to their Congressperson, etc. Geoff will know about that. Our task is to decide to do it with a thumbs up / thumbs down vote.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 15:09, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

Per the block of text, how do y'all propose we actually do this? We don't have any of the resources WMF has. I'm not even sure we could pull off an attempt to redirect all traffic to them and basically just steal whatever they come up with, not that that's apt to even be legal. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy.png 11:28, 13 January 2012
Maybe a reskin that covers the entire main page, including the search boxes. The best template I've seen is being used on some pages on ATS, with official looking badges from U.S. departments of whatever, telling people that the website is closed for violating the SOPA act. In the U.S. this will actually shut us down, which is why Jimmy Wales and others are so browning their pants over it. Anyway, would a reskin work in covering up the search box? Aleister 11:50 13-1-'12
Why should all users be forced into this trivialisation of protest movements. It's nasty and offensive considering the people who have died around the world this year protesting against real oppression. I don't like this SOPA idea either, and if people feel exercised they should protest in person or do something personally. For me, there are things I care about more, and I will protest in person for them, not just press a few buttons on a laptop. You seem to be treating this as a little bit of fun, but as a user here, I don't want to be under the umberella of this action. This is different from decisions that are made about site policy or other related subjects which have to be done on a majority. mAttlobster. (hello) 12:35, January 13, 2012 (UTC)
Maybe you don't get it, I know I didn't. If SOPA passes both the U.S. House and Senate, and is signed by Obama, then uncyclopedia may be no more in a matter of months if not weeks. Maybe I'm misreading the data, but if Jimmy Wales and wikipedia are going to shut down for 12 hours, they probably know what they're doing. The reason that so many people are combatting oppression now is because of the internet--the internet is a fairly new force in the world which is changing the world in too many ways for any one person to understand, yet alone predict. SOPA and its related laws, not only in the U.S. but around the world, represent the rigid establishments way of trying to put some control, any control, on the free flow of information. Joe Lieberman is sponsoring the U.S. Senate's version, Mr. Establishment himself. Aleister 13:03 13-1-'12
The other thing to consider here is that this is not a "trivial" protest - it is about a further restriction on freedom of press/freedom of speech. While what we do here is humorous, we have to remember that humour is one of the greatest tools we have in provoking thought that can lead to real change. Going outside of Uncyc though, any attack on free speech is an attack on the right to think freely and protest. Hasn't there been enough legal changes over the past 15 years removing rights from people in 'free' countries? By sitting back and allowing any further restrictions on freedom of speech you take more power away from those that keep governements in check. Pup 01:18 13 Jan '12
I think these two answers above make very good, well considered and valid points, especially the one about the internet being used to battle opression. Looking further into it, I agree SOPA is a bad thing - but that's partly because of my politics. I personally think people should individually choose whether to protest against something or not. Uncyclopedia is not a protest, political or advocacy group, so I don't think the whole site should protest collectively - as this just doesn't seem valid. That's just my opinion. mAttlobster. (hello) 14:27, January 13, 2012 (UTC)
The internet has changed drastically over the last ten years. Its become standardised, boring, incorporated, commercialised, boring and the commercials get more and more irritating turning the internet into a mega-channeled television. I support any initiative that works to keep this trend from accelerating and I am all for doing without uncyclopedia for one day. Think of it as a bloody communal break from addition. Even if the protest is "cliche" or "flawed" ... I think its worth trying. --ShabiDOO 10:34, January 17, 2012 (UTC)

Uncyclopedic Suggestion

Rather than take part in this lazy collective pointlessness, why don't we do what we should be doing: take the piss out of Wikipedia. And while we're at it: what's referred to as slactivism. Let's use the day not to protest against SOPA but satirise this internet phenomenon of lazy protest including whatever it is Wikipedia are planning to do. mAttlobster. (hello) 12:59, January 13, 2012 (UTC)

That's not a bad idea. --EMC [TALK] 15:00 Jan 13 2012
Rather than a blackout, I'd prefer if we just did a reskin satirising the stupidity that might result from this bill being passed. Something about what mAtt mentions above could be included as well. Great idea, but it won't have much impact as we have a decent traffic, but it's frivolous compared to Wikipedia. I documented myself on this bill, and I think we have to show some Internet solidarity. They could sooo take us down reading the legislature based solely on our pictures import. This bill targets the whole internet and freedom of speech on it, an attempt to censor the information that is not on the TV, which would be the last place I would rely on for info. Talk Mattsnow 15:31, January 13, 2012 (UTC)
Here is the wikipedia page about their project, I haven't read it, but will soon. Good plans brewing here too it seems, in the spirit of the Goddess COLLAB. The wikipedia link above might provide some ideas for Lobster's satirical approach and will at least tell us what they are planning. Aleister 15:32 13-1-'12
I don't want to make political statements on this site, but a "rogue" website (in their view) that doesn't carry the "official" message could be taken down without notice, We have to stand ground. They would probably leave us alone since we're supposedly a bunch of clowns, but what would that mean to say, Wikileaks? Talk Mattsnow 15:42, January 13, 2012 (UTC)
I still think ripping the piss out of Wikipedia doing this protest is the right thing to do. If it's combined with some SOPA satire then all the better. But we should try as hard as possible to saterise Wikepedia's po-faced attitude. Also Uncyclopedia is not the place to try and protect Wikileaks. It just isn't. mAttlobster. (hello) 16:31, January 13, 2012 (UTC)
Has anyone written any articles/UnNews that could be front-paged as a parody of Wikipedia's blackout? If I could see some examples of what we may do I'd be more inclined to lend support to this idea. Pup 10:20 13 Jan '12

If there is one thing you all are, it's wrong

We should agree with SOPA. We should re-do the front page digitally bowing down before those Great Patriots of Our Fair and Just Country; our Congress, the president, and the tidal wave of stealthy and exceedingly well-paid industry lobbyists.

Oh, how they sacrifice their time, our money and what's left of the Bill of Rights to protect us from what's left of the Bill of Rights! It's only a little Liberty to give up...for Liberty! Etc. Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 17:09, January 13, 2012 (UTC)

I had this wonderful idea

I'm going to add a little black censored-like thing saying 'censor more' to the logo, like some other sites are doing. Or at least pastebin is doing that. this one shall link to Nihilism instead of anything useful or satirical, though, mostly because I'm lazy.

If anyone objects, just tell Zombiebaron to shoot me before I get around to actually doing it. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy.png 22:29, 13 January 2012

I think we could do something funnier than say "censor more". Like maybe "Happy Belated Martin Luther King Junior Day!" -- The Zombiebaron 23:37, January 13, 2012 (UTC)
"Blackout for Martin Luther King Jr day"? Pup 11:56 13 Jan '12
Naw, get some rest. Then you will come up with something great. Got to at least cover the whole front page, maybe then a button that says: "Remove the Power of the SOPA act" and you enter the site. But the front page could be like one of those Above Top Secret (ATS) page-covers, once you see it you'll know what I mean. MLK? Who's he? Aleister 00:23 14-1-'12
But how's that funny? mAttlobster. (hello) 13:27, January 14, 2012 (UTC)
Funny? This is not a funny issue. If this passes as is uncy may--not for certain but may--soon be gone. Poof, no more. You want to cover up the potato or something. We should put up a facsmile of what the site will look like when a judge closes it down. This is a satire site, but if Lenny Bruce or W.C. Fields were still kicking Bruce would be on the barricades and Fields would serve drinks--both noble endeavors. Aleister 14:38 14-1-'12
If this bill passes there is not a chance it will change anything on Uncyclopedia. Also, a lot of the things that are satirised here you could argue are not funny subjects. mAttlobster. (hello) 14:51, January 14, 2012 (UTC)

SOPA IS DEAD

[1] ~Sir Frosty (Talk to me!) Proudly bogan 01:27, January 17, 2012 (UTC)

SOPHIA is dead? Oh god, should we have a service, or a protest, or just toast her in our drinking games today. Sophia, we hardly knew ye. As for SOPA, lots of false rumours have circulated the last half week about its demise. This may be someone picking up a lie and passing it along, I dunno. Hopefully you're right. Poor Sophia, though. Aleister 1:30 17-1-'12
UPDATE: Although some rumors, there has been no official announcement from the U.S. House, and the Senate bill is still moving forward. Sophia still lives! Aleister 2:48 17-1-'12

PIPA still lives

Much the same as Wikipedia and Reddit, I think we should still go ahead. Pup 03:01 17 Jan '12

Is a plan organized? This would occur Wednesday, from 13:00, to Thursday, 1:00. Has anyone made a template? And where is the cheese? Who's making the sandwiches? Aleister 3:08 17-1-'12
p.s. I can't make head nor heels of the wikipedia page discussing their position. Why don't we just go ahead and do it if they do anything major or not. The bill is still alive, let's lead the way if wikipedia can't make up its collective mind. A funny template covering the main page would do it, and would be the envy of wikipedia. This may be the best way to pwn wikipedia, by going ahead where they fear to tred. 3:14
If we change the site notice then we can have this pop-up the first time when someone logs in, and they can then remove it the way site notices are usually removed. By adding in a position: fixed it can be smack on the middle of the screen. There is sufficient support for it, but it would need someone to create a template, and an admin to change the site notice. This way a protest can be made, and people can be aware of what's happening, but the site can still be accessed. Best possible middle-ground solution, and my social life doesn't need to change. Pup 03:23 17 Jan '12
Hopefully large enough to cover much of the screen. And maybe we can turn the entire news section of the main page into a total protest section. And anyone can access the entire site by just googling an article name or a user name, thus getting someone into the guts of the site. viva la social life. Aleister 3:26 17-1-'12

Update: Wikipedia to black out white out good bye for entire 24 hours starting at 5:00

Starting at 5:00 Wednesday. No wikipedia on Wednesday, although it will be interesting to see what message is on the screen. Let's come as close to this as possible, even if it needs to be satirical or a pwning of wikipedia or even, as Mattlobster says, shutting down the site in support of SOPA, which is funny and interesting as well. The politicians are backing down somewhat, but not killing the bill (hiding in the weeds ready to bring it back again on short notice), and wikipedia is leading the way. Yay! Jimbo. Aleister 12:15 17-1-'12

I think a direct parody of Wikipedia's blacked-out banner would be the best way to go. I'm a cartoonist, so I only kill people with my pencil. After all, everyone can declare other people (like Wikipedia... *it's a she*) dead | Cartoonist | You're nuts? Don't worry... Me too! | 23:33, January 17, 2012 (UTC)

Official sounding official-ness from Wikia

So usually we are all "nooooooooooo..." when it comes to blanking the wiki or similar (especially where covering spotlights is concerned). Official word for tonight/tomorrow is "k". Obviously you need to choose your code carefully an all that, but as long as you are doing it in a way that doesn't strain the servers, all's good. -- sannse (talk) 20:06, January 17, 2012 (UTC)

Sannse, you are a goddess. But you knew that. Is wikia going to join in with other pages? Please consider publicizing the effort as well (press releases, calling some of those reporters who owe you a favor,etc.). Viva la revolutione and all that. Aleister 20:13 17-1-'12
Revolution? It's the Government that's trying to start the revolution! We're the ones trying to keep things as they are (which is good, since a revolution that crushes free speech is something that must be stopped). Btw, any final decisions on how we'll be blacking out the site? --Scofield & Dudes 20:23, January 17, 2012 (UTC)
Aleister: Yeah, we're joining in. Not with a total blackout, but with pretty strong notices when people first come to Wikia. We're using the ads system, so Uncyc won't be included, which is why it's great to see this discussion here! -- sannse (talk) 22:36, January 17, 2012 (UTC)

Totally unofficial and not Wikia-spokesperson-ish suggestion from Sannse

http://test.wikipedia.org/?banner=blackout < if we're going for the direct parody... this is what we need to emulate.

How about something like:

WE NEED YOU TO PROTEST
FREE SPEECH ONLINE

The Uncyclopedia community has authorized a blackout of the English version of Uncyclopedia for 24 hours in protest of the blackout of the English version of Wikipedia. We support the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the PROTECTIP Act (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate — that, if passed, will harm the free, secure, and open Internet. For God's sake guys! This is our only chance to stop cats, porn, and fucking bronies taking over the world!

Today we ask you to take action.

-- sannse (talk) 20:57, January 17, 2012 (UTC)

Awesome! Maybe we could link to a few bigoted blog-posts that support online censorship for all sorts of stupid reasons, assuming somebody has the time to make them. --Scofield & Dudes 21:00, January 17, 2012 (UTC)
I'd actually suggest linking to exactly the same resources as Wikipedia - that way we would be supporting and parodying at the same time -- sannse (talk) 21:02, January 17, 2012 (UTC)
Nah, that'll be a little obvious. We could link to an explanation for the law itself, which will be enough to make people aware of the problem, and then link to blog posts "supporting" the act like this one, which I just made for the occasion. We need to maintain the parodist tone, and simultaneously raise awareness about how dangerous the law could prove to be. --Scofield & Dudes 21:30, January 17, 2012 (UTC)
Great, we disguised ourselves. Now we had defeated the pro-SOPA cause. But not yet. GiratinaOriginForme.png |Si Plebius Dato' Joe ang Man on Fire CUN|IC Kill Don't be fooled. I'm an Aussie too. | 11:16, January 19, 2012 (UTC)

Check me out, I have my own header

I had an idea and it's probably a shit one, but you should all read it anyway.

What if we black out the site because we're supposedly mad at Wikipedia for blacking out their site. E.g;

We're really mad
They've really rustled our jimmies this time

The Uncyclopedia community has authorised a blackout of the English version of Uncyclopedia for 24 hours in protest of the blackout of the English version of Wikipedia. We don't support the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S House of Representatives, and the PROTECTIP Act (PIPA) in the U.S Senate either. however we're all jolly mad about not being able to use Wikipedia for 24 hours. Seriously, I have an essay due in for tomorrow, Where am I going to get my concise and accurate information now?

Just an idea, could be re-worded but you get the jist. BonSig.png (Bonner) (Talk) Jan 17, 21:37

That's actually not bad, but we need to arrive at a resolution on how we'll be blacking out the site, and I'm not sure if yours is THE best way to go. Maybe someone else can add to it? --Scofield & Dudes 21:43, January 17, 2012 (UTC)
I think, but don't know for sure, that Litheria or however the name is spelled, is working on something, hopefully assisted by Puppy and his litter. It's a little late for everyone to too many cooks, so I'd suggest that Sannse contact L. and Pup and hopefully one or both of them are doing their best to come up with something. Aleister 22:39 17-1-'12
Lithyria hasn't responded, and I am busy IRL today (dammit). What Al and I spoke about doing on Lietherear's talkpage I think is the best way to go, but I can't implement. Who wants to pick it up? Pup 11:11 17 Jan '12
I'm on my way to finishing up my article about this. GiratinaOriginForme.png |Si Plebius Dato' Joe ang Man on Fire CUN|IC Kill Don't be fooled. I'm an Aussie too. | 00:52, January 18, 2012 (UTC)
If Liberia and you don't do it, although I still have hope L will come through, we are doomed to fail and that means SOPA will pass and the end of the innernest is near. If only we could save it it would have been nice, but now our children and our children's children will only have tales of the time that freedom on those old computer machines they see in museums actually existed. Damn you puppy and libya, you have killed the future all by yourselves!!! Aleister 00:53 18-1-'12

Bonner's idea is my favorite. But I'd rather not even get political about it at all. Just something like this:

The Uncyclopedia community has authorized a blackout of the English version of Uncyclopedia for 24 hours in protest of the blackout of the English version of Wikipedia. Seriously, I have an essay due tomorrow, and the last time I copied-and-pasted from Yahoo Answers instead, I got a D.

Jimbo, turn your dumb site back on, or you won't get to read any of our dick jokes anymore.

Maybe better. I'm not fan of SOPA, but come on, our mission statement is funny - let's not be "funny and occasionally political." Let's please not even mention SOPA on the front page. Unless someone writes SOPA and it's featured. Tinymasaru.gifpillow talk 01:02, January 18, 2012 (UTC)

Very good, but we need someone to put up a reskin of the front page with that or something. L said in the opening template that if L remembers it will be done. We are rudderless without a rudder, much like an Italian ship captain who's got somewhere else to be. Aleister 1:05 18-1-'12
Why didn't we think of that before? GiratinaOriginForme.png |Si Plebius Dato' Joe ang Man on Fire CUN|IC Kill Don't be fooled. I'm an Aussie too. | 01:49, January 18, 2012 (UTC)

Don't know if its too late to suggest this but one idea could be to use a similar effect that Tropical cyclone uses. MadMax 05:02, January 18, 2012 (UTC)

Does that mean poptarts are still the official toaster snack of the blackout? --ShabiDOO 06:18, January 19, 2012 (UTC)
SOPtArts? Pup 06:22 19 Jan '12
Is that some kind of generic brand? I hear there is big savings in buying the generic kind. Has a good ring to it. SOPtArts. You can use them to sop up all the bacon fat left in the skillet. Maybe SOPtArts should be the official toaster snack of the 2012 black out! --ShabiDOO 08:09, January 19, 2012 (UTC)--ShabiDOO 08:09, January 19, 2012 (UTC)

Liberia made a fantastic front page template, imnho the best-of-show on the innernests yesterday. And the coding here was tighter than on wikipedia (which could be overcome with the stop button, which didn't work here). Yay Lietearya! And yay! Joe9320 for getting this whole thing rolling and inspiring and educating the rest of us. Aleister 12:44 19-1-'12
