This subject has come up a couple times while discussing why Uncyclopedia is declining. Why do people leave? Hast the place become dull? Are there too many rules? Let's stop all the hypothesizing for a minute and look at the story of individual users. Did you leave Uncyclopedia for a long period? Were you on the brink of quitting this place? Did you come back after a long period of absence? Why did you do what you did? Share your story. I'll start

So... Not long after I registered, Tom mayfair permabanned me because I'd voted both with this account and my IP on a VFH nom. At that point, I could've just left the wiki and never come back. For some reason, I didn't. RAHB shortened my ban and after a while I started editing again. As the time went on, more hardships and dramas were to follow. But the reason I stuck around despite all that, is probably because of this thingy and the text RAHB had typed beneath it. I'll go next

I turned up in 2008 and starting editing the way everyone did, I got blocked by TKF and told to read HTBFANJS. I went away and then came back again with a brand new account, found myself a niche and began to turn up more and more as the initial awards and positive feedback gave me a reason to like this place and stick around. Then came the maintenance, then came the hatred, then came the cabal and then came even more hatred. I can't really explain why I'm still here, I love this place and, for the most part, the community. I don't think Uncyclopedia is dying and I have never entertained the thought of wanting to leave. It still makes me laugh and, while it gives me a headache some of time, that is entirely balanced out by some of the funniest people I have ever met telling me that I suck balls. --ChiefjusticeDS 13:05, February 24, 2011 (UTC)

Community?

There are some great individuals here; it is only when they envisage a "community" that it turns into dickery, personal attacks, and tug-of-wars. Without the collective vision, preachy articles coexist nicely with Randumbo. But as political as it gets, any grudges are forgotten when the subject turns to how to improve that one next article. So I haven't left in a year and a half. The Itty Bitty page does suggest that 2010 was an off-year for attracting a large number of new marquee names. Spıke ¬ 14:08 24-Feb-11

PS--Other users answer the question, "How did I learn about Uncyclopedia?" The same man who, during halftime of football games we watched at his house, taught me about Pascal and Delphi (just before the world went in a different direction) once exposed me to Uncyclopedia. It would have been around 2006, and I feel sure I registered the unused name Spike (not in all capitals) but Sannse says I didn't. This session had no effect on me, except to give me some déjà vu three years later when I returned, saw the article on New Hampshire, and said, "That guy missed the real joke!" And one thing led to another. Spıke ¬ 14:06 27-Feb-11

fg ftw

Lurking around a bit today cause I got the feature. I stopped checking back here frequently after Street Fighter 4 came out and reignited my love for fighting games. Also, I thought the content here was getting weaker. I'm thinking of getting into Marvel vs. Capcom 3 now so I'll probably just continue to check my watchlist for shit every few days. --S0.S0S.0S.0S0 14:29, February 24, 2011 (UTC)

One significant reason the content here is getting weaker is that you left. Tinymasaru.gifpillow talk 22:28, February 24, 2011 (UTC)

Rcmurphy

I started editing in March 2005, when the main page was fully editable and we lived on rainbowberries that grew on tall vines reaching up towards the heavens. I edited pretty much consistently until August 2008, when I took a leave of absence to wrestle crocodiles work with kids in the Philippines as a Peace Corps volunteer. After that, plus some supplementary traveling in Asia, I returned to my homeland three weeks ago.

To be honest, I've probably stuck by Uncyclopedia so long partly because I was there almost from the beginning. If I had just signed up for a username today, I think the size and complexity of the site would be much more daunting to me. I've had loads of some a few laughs here over the years, and I rather like the place... I've never taken a long voluntary break from Uncyc, mostly because I need to make sure I'm nommed for every Noob of the Month. —rc (t) 15:21, February 24, 2011 (UTC)

This place

It is like a mad, raving dream full of humour and chaos and pain and some of the craziest, mostly lovely people I have ever encountered. I'd never really stuck around before, but over the years the madness kept drawing me back. Wandering the galleries and corridors, there was so much to see, so much to read, so much to devour and digest and regurgitate for my gurgling kittens who simply demanded they be fed, and fed properly, mouth-to-mouth and all that... bloody kittens. Then I'd wander off for awhile until something brought me back. I tried making accounts, writing stuff myself, etc a few times, but never stuck around until someone actually welcomed me, conversation and whatnot ensued, and he poked at my talkpage when I inevitably did wander off as usual...

Now I can't leave. I hardly read anything, just wander and poke and... urgh. It's turned into my latest obsession, and that could last years... at least when I'd get obsessed with a game, I'd run out of game after awhile, but a place like this? Bloody hell. I hope you're happy, you lot. Trapping me here with your craziness and funniness and nessiness... I hope you're bloody happy. I'll stab you. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy.png 15:56, 24 February 2011

Well

No one who isn't brand new needs to be told that I haven't seen my share of drama. In my first few months, I nearly quit after a fight over TKF reverting a Pee Review I gave him. Then, I nearly quit when Spang unilaterally deleted the BUTT POOP series and basically told me I wouldn't know humor if it bit me in the ass. Then, I nearly quit after an unpleasant run-in with Flammable on IRC, the details of which I no longer really remember. Then, I did quit when Olipro disqualified Suddenly, Raccoons from the PLS for being generally shit. And yesterday, I fully expected to be tossed unceremoniously out of the nearest airlock.

But I like to write. Actually, my Horace and early Inebriated periods were some of the most fun I've had on the wiki - being able to write articles for people who were going in with basically no preconceived ideas at all about this being "a Hype article." I don't think I could have ever written What's a nigga gotta do to get a Pee Review around here? under the Hype name. I like to write songs, too. Shit, I need to do that again now that my recording studio's up and running again and I'm dating a girl who can actually sing.

Umm.. so.. bottom line: I like writing here, I've had unpleasant run-ins with some of the admins in the past, and I wish I was still getting as much feedback as I did back in '08 when multiple people were actually reading my articles while I was still working on them. That was awesome. Tinymasaru.gifpillow talk 22:39, February 24, 2011 (UTC)

Settle down class

I left in May of 09 after about 6 months of writing. Honestly I don't remember exactly why I left, I think it had something to do with searching for a summer job (damn you money, you ruin everything.) I came back because I recently realized how much I missed writing for this site and reading everything other people write. I also never got a feature and didn't want to die a failure. I take it you didn't get the job.... Spıke ¬ 22:57 24-Feb-11
I don't see why you'd assume that seeing as it was 2 years ago and I just came back at the beginning of the month. But no, I didn't seeing as everyone wanted someone who was going to stay for longer than the summer. Jackofspades.png (talk) 23:06, February 24, 2011 (UTC)

Right, so

I disappeared 6ish months ago because I got busy, namely as a result of finding myself a girlfriend to hang out with, spending more time hanging out with real world friends from high school, holding onto a summer job, and getting ready for, going to, and being at college. That last one's been the biggest issue lately, and I'm still not totally sure how much time I can spend hanging out here, especially with the university's wifi being so shitty. However, I recently remembered how great I was, and decided that it was too much to ask of everyone to continue trying to have a website without me, and returned. I'll probably stay because I guess I like some of you, or something. Also, I really do enjoy writing funny stuff, and that's not really something I can do anywhere but here. - P.M., WotM, & GUN, Sir Led Balloon Baloon.gif(Tick Tock) (Contribs) 23:00, Feb 24

Hoodline Turks

Way back in 2005, I was led here by Hinoa from the Kingdom of Loathing to edit the titular article. I didn't. I read a few things, thought it was a funny idea, and left and didn't come back.

Then I did, way in the beginning of 2006. I registered, voted on VFH a bit, and quit because I didn't know how to write yet. I came back way later in 2007 and got banned for writing vanity by Famine. Then i got banned by Famine for having a sockpuppet. Then I became an admin.

Between late 2008 and 2009, I sort of drifted away and became disillused from Uncyclopedia due to general boredome/dissatisfaction with quality or something or other. The times I checked in, I veered wildly between split personalities of demagogue dramamonger and bloodthirsty post-Famine autocrat (again, largely because of disillusionment). Since entering college, my situation's been pretty similar to TLB's. Cool girlfriend, tons of work took away from most of my time freshman year. I'd experience sudden, brief resurgances as usual every few weeks (in a much better online mood), but I only came back for real this summer after I failed to find a job of any sort. Since then, I managed to stick around through one and a half less-difficult semesters and then suddenly got the idea to write funny stuff again. And here I am. --Littleboyonly.jpg TKFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFCK Oldmanonly.jpg 02:44, February 25, 2011 (UTC)

Huh?

I came here as an IP in around 2005/06. Can't remember for the life of me why I decided to come here - I get the vague feeling it was the friend of a friend who suggested checking it out. I made a few crappy edits, including adding random 2's in the Binary article had a giggle or two, and then buggered off. Through a fairly lengthy process of being unemployed I came here as a result or randomly clicking links. I went from looking at mind teasers to stumbling across the Lateral thinking puzzle page. While I was here I fiddles about a bit, rewrote a few things, and then hit Special:RecentChanges and came across a one-line article about carebears. I figured I could build this out into a decent article. I was wrong. I then started writing on other things that interested me, and playing with coding, and then someone nommed Vitiligo for FA. It didn't feature, so I went back and did some work to it - and it still hasn't featured. That minor taste of success though led me to realize that it's not the content that gets FAs, it's coding. I could write the most boring stuff ever and as long as the coding was good it would feature. With that in mind I wrote Search for God. It failed at VFH. a newbie came along and started to work on carebears and I worked with him for awhile to see if we could get it to a feature. We were wrong. I wrote an extensively code heavy article for PLS that was a parody of Microsoft Knowledge Base. It came last. I took the foot off the accelerator for a while here as I was trying to get a promotion, and then can back to poke around a bit. I wrote an article in an hour - twice - which ended up having to be renamed before anyone took it seriously. I still haven't managed to make a decent article about carebears. I've also failed as head of IC. I have no idea why I'm still here, except that I like changing my sig. Pup 03:16 25 Feb '11

Good coding does not redeem a crappy article. I hope you've learnt that now. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy.png 05:11, 25 February 2011

But it can make an OK article great. Jackofspades.png (talk) 05:13, February 25, 2011 (UTC)
Not really... I mean, it might look great, but if the content sucks, the content still sucks. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy.png 05:22, 25 February 2011
Actually, I thought my story was a good example of how good coding does not replace good writing, but having better looking articles gives for a more enjoyable read, which does improve them. There are a few things on here that I've done some massive work on coding wise simply because it seemed like a good idea, but the articles are still shite. But in with coding there's a visual humour that I try to inject onto my stuff, and that's where coding helps an article. Pup 08:31 25 Feb '11

Lollipop speaks the truth

This covers up the reason about the Sockpuppet scandal of 2011. Remember when I said I was planning to 'retire' like about early January? My original plan was to abandon Maniac mcpee and use the old guy. But Lyrithya and Puppy lured me back. So imagine what would of happened if Maniac mcpee became Oldie? By the way, i've been doing IP edits since June, so i've been here two months longer. Oh, and by the way, this paragraph was longer, but Thekillerfroggy auto conflicted me. --Care for a lick? Who am I? Why am I here?

I've "left" a few times already. At least one of those attempts was a conscious effort to stay away for good, but out of sheer boredom, I ended up returning (and then I became an admin for some reason). Every instance of this had to do with feeling dissastisfied with the way things were at the time; not a lot of activity going on/things for me to do (banning hilarious vandals that I adore like the Nigger Dog Shit guy who thinks my vagina is moldy or that Bambifag01 kid), unfunny things being written/made, people that I liked either dissappearing or not coming on as frequently. I guess the main reason I still come here (besides having no life to speak of whatsoever) is that it's one of the few places that I actually have some sort of identity at. Most other sites/forums that I frequent I either rarely say or do anything or I just lurk. Here I can basically do whatever I want without giving much of a shit about what any of you think about me (okay, that's a lie, I hurt deep down inside when my attempts at "comedy" completely and utterly backfire or go unnoticed) and laugh my ass off about it all the way. --Pathetic Dog Shit 03:28, February 25, 2011 (UTC)

Well, all in all, you're one of the wonders of this place. Wouldn't be the same without you, so I'm glad the boredom comes. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy.png 05:12, 25 February 2011

Skip this one, because mrthejazz is annoying

I joined in 2006. Previous to that, I frequented zug.com, but everybody there thought that being a dick to noobs = comedy. Granted, I wasn't funny then (or now), but that site annoyed me because some unfunny noob who was hazed turned around in three months and did the exact same thing to other noobs, even though they still weren't funny. When I joined uncyc, everybody was much more positive. I really sucked, but a few nice admins like Zim and Moneysign took me under their wing. I was slightly obnoxious, (Compared to how I'm very obnoxious now) and life just eventually got in the way.

In 2008 I visited for old times sake and saw that one of my articles got featured somehow. That's one reason I came back. People actually liked something I did! I made a few edits, but then life got in the way again. In 2010, I started just getting features everywhere, and once I realized that people actually liked my articles, I went crazy and drunk with power. I was seriously a huge egoistic douche. Since then, I've metamorphosed from a egoistic douche into an egoistic asshole. It's probably a reflection of the fact that I'm still going to this site rather than living a full life, complete with a vegan diet, minimalist principles, diet and exercise, self respect, a six figure income, and sanity. These are things I can never have. So instead, I write stupid shit on here. Meh, why not? User:Mrthejazz/sig 05:56, February 25, 2011 (UTC)

Machiavellian Delusions

I found Kitten Huffing in May 2005 and was laughing so hard I nearly hospitalised myself. For a few month after that I would visit the site daily but only reading other people's work. Started with some light work as an IP before signing up for an account. One of those sexy admins (where are you, Marcus Malo?) visited my talk page, along with people like Codeine, Dawg, Elvis and a few others. My reason for being here are the same now as they were then, and mostly wrapped around my own enjoyment of writing, but also the fun of collaborating with others. If I take pride in anything its in helping others to realise the talent they have, and helping a few people to get their first feature was probably more enjoyable than getting my own. As to why I'm still here I guess it comes down to still getting something back from all this, its still about those same feelings I had from my first read here or adding my first couple of funny lines to an article. -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb.png (talk to me)

This is the part where you all say in Unison, "Who?"

I used to crank out Features one after the other. Then came the drugs (Thanks Aleister) the girls, and the parties. Before long, I was so strung out I couldn't stop shaking long enough to type a sentence. After rehabing for the last 8 months, I'm finally ready to start writing again.

Not really, but it sounds better than "I like writing stuff but I have a nasty case of writers block that I just can't seem to shake." Whatever. Who is Number 1?

I came here at the back end of 2008, just as I started my degree (in my old account). I laughed at several of the pages, and for some reason, most probably boredom I thought that I could have a go. I generally liked the atmosphere when I started because most of the characters I ran into were writers, and similarly names like ENeGMA and Hardwick were not just myths in Uncyclopedia history. After being a dick several times, I was encouraged to continue by the kindness of people Like Mhaille, Heerenveen, UU, Mordillo and so many others who helped me out to write better articles. Seeing these characters help out myself generally inspired met to try and contribute to the Karmic bank account of good stuff on here.

Sadly while I think there have been improvements, more and more time has gone on maintenance – or a form of it which is intended to make favorable opinions for adminship, or whoring generally to gain some kind of influence. I find this culture pretty difficult to have time for, and I suspect in their lives this absurd motivation to have influence and power on a comedy website has driven them to this as most normal people probably would not have time for them.

I think my personal cynicism of this has gradually led to less favorable views of myself as the site has moved more towards consolidation than creation - that and the culture of 'disagreement' being closed off as 'drama' leading to generally veiled animosity among a lot of contributors. By the same token its hard to get on the same page with contributors who either have taken up full time employment here – it creates a bad atmosphere personally to see another human being spend 10/14 hours day and night on here – not so much the whoring, but the excess of time spent by another human being not on funny – but in the pursuit of useless power and ticking off stats.

I've stayed about for all this time because there's still a lot of funny stuff, but personally I have doubts about how long I'll be contributing here – it’s kind of embarrassing to be associated with a lot of the characters on here, by the same token, I have "stuff" in my life as it were - this sites seems to be forming itself on how it can service those who clearly don't. --Sycamore (Talk) 09:20, February 26, 2011 (UTC)

Valid points, but keep in mind that the site is a forum for the users as a whole to contribute original pieces of comedic writing. The only people to blame for consolidation over creation are not the admins - most if the active admins on site are ones that both you and I have voted upon - but the community as a whole. The unstated purpose of this forum is to work out what we can do in order to keep this place vibrant and lively. Putting focus on creation is a significant part of this. We recently had a very successful PLS, and there's that happy monkey thing which I have no idea what it is but sounds like something to promote good writing. Also there is CW coming up soonish - I think - and there are other parts of encouraging creation along the way. As a very non-admin - and I don't really relish the idea of becoming one - I try and stop drama when it comes up when it's non-constructive for the exact reason you've mentioned above - it's a waste of time and I have other things in my life that are more important. I spend probably an hour or two a day here, but that's travel time to and from work and during lunch and tea breaks. Maybe a little more on the weekend. The time that I am here I spend in a little chit chat, or when I have more time to dedicate solid blocks of it I try to write, or otherwise contribute. But it's up to me, as an individual, to be a creative influence on the site. Sitting there and whining and saying oh me, oh my and blaming the lack of creativity on a bunch of volunteers who, realistically, have only slightly more influence on the site then everyone else does, but also have a hell of a lot more asked of them, is really counter-intuitive. TKF admitted that he's only getting back into writing now, after a fairly lengthy hiatus, and rcmurphy has come back recently to do the same. Don't you think it would be better to take some responsibility for lack of creativity yourself, rather than blaming others? Especially when we have some fantastic articles getting to front page, and other fantastic articles not making it through simply due to the volume of good stuff coming through. And that's my counter rant to your rant. Take it or leave it, but don't expect a counter-counter-counter rant from me - I have other things to do. Pup 12:42 26 Feb '11
Sycamore, you are one of the joys here. And have you noticed the good new blood that's coming onto the site? Neopowell, RPM, and a few other weeks-old noobies are both loving the newness of their experience and contributing good material. As for time, personally, although I seem to be here a lot, I'm actually logged on most of the time while doing other things, multitasking, having the tv turned on to a news channel or documentary, or even talking on speaker with friends (or, in person, the Bill Clinton route), and probably most of the other regulars do the same. I go back again to Funnybony's line that uncy is a playground for adults. I play both outside and inside, and this is one of my favorite inside sports, accessible while just lying around too! Not to rain on the parade, but I don't think you've tackled by criticism - you've just answered criticisms which you've put forward and then answered. Nowhere have I said admins are responsible for the VFD/Overdone janitorial culture, nor have I stated that the problems posited are by anything more than a vocal and difficult minority whose sockpuppteering, power whoring and stat obsessions are in my opinion corrosive when done to the excess that I've seen on here.
Where have I said that there were no promising new comers or good articles still produced? I'm happy for you to disagree with what I've said, its just my experience and why I've gone on hiatus before. By the same token, suggesting that I don't contribute new articles is a bit misinformed (I just don't whore that much - nor do I compete to be popular). Go to my userpage - there's fresh reads and funny all the time:)--Sycamore (Talk) 19:14, February 26, 2011 (UTC)

Can't tell ya

I seriously have no memory of how I came across the site or signed up as a user. I know I stayed when friendly people like RAHB and Puppy helped me manuever around the place, and I found it was fun to write comedy (in "real life" I'd done more "serious" writing for awhile, and wanted to test if I still had the fiction gene.) Then reading lots of Puppy's and DrStrange's pages (I'm proud to have been the waterboy for Doc's amazing feature run in January MMX, which earned him the only two-time writer of the month tag), and meeting more friendly people who you can say almost anything too and they have pushed their envolopes far enough out to have fun with it, I stayed, and play here a few hours most days (almost all semi-creative people have a "home" internet base these days, where they spend lots of their time, and this place is much more interesting than twitter or facebook, at least for me. And I never do IRC, so time I would use there is spent on-site as well) Aleister 13:12 26-2-'11

I'm still here.

Purple Rommy

December 2008, work happened to be slow and was reading an article by Richard Dawkins when he mentioned the Flying Spaghetti Monster in a joke about that believing in something like the immaculate conception was akin to thinking the FSM was a real being. Intrigued, I googled the name and came across the site. I have been here ever since, more or less every day, first working on the Roman Emperors category with Zarbag before branching out to the forums and acquiring a reputation as one of the site's haters regards other writer's articles (to paraphrase a sobriquet). So never went away and met other writers here. Together with Sonje, best bit of work I did here was encourage and assist Sog1970 when we came across his Boer War article. As we can also see, Soggy has become one of the most prolific contributors on this website. --Laurels.gifRomArtus*Imperator ® (Orate) 13:28, February 28, 2011 (UTC)

In fact, the idea that an opponent of an article or a legislative bill acts out of "hate" is a cheap shot everyone should leave to the politics blogs. This site is lucky that Romartus has stuck around despite multi-day joke bans for sloppy editing and despite being the object of cyber-bullying, and that he remains a perfect gentleman. I just ran out of ideas

I wrote over 50 unnews articles, then got into a major argument over stuff I really should have let slide and after that, I really just stopped doing any significant writing. Offsite, I did write 121 piano rags in 2009 but that seems to be over now also. I currently am not doing anything that qualifies as creativity, unfortunately. Maybe that will change eventually. --Hrodulf 03:52, March 4, 2011 (UTC)

Midis of the piano rags are available at http://hrodulf.deviantart.com. I didn't think about writing a article about it. I'll see if I can find an angle. --Hrodulf 22:53, March 5, 2011 (UTC)

Jim Davidson

Jim Davidson. mAttlobster. (hello) 12:42, March 5, 2011 (UTC)

Okay, I get to go now.

I came here to edit Corporate Takeover, and created an account because the big meanies at Wikia didn't let me use my Wikia account here. Meanies. I got preoccupied and left during a time of protest against their new "wikia skin" (what kind of name is that, anyway?) and have returned to use my army to take over this wiki's government and become a dictatorial administrator. Due to temporary loss of my computer, this won't be happening for a little while, but I plan to make a comeback that will blow everyone off their feet. —DCCLXXVII (complaintsresumeMUN.pngPcg logo.jpgUC-Army-OF1d.jpgWPUMFGoogHelpAWAWA) 01:48, March 7, 2011 (UTC)

Clear the room please

I came here after Rahm mentioned that he read, and sometimes edited, the site. It's a good mental escape from my duties and some of the other pressures in my life. The humor sometimes eludes me, but I'm learning as I lurk. Why do people dislike Chief Justice so much? I could understand if he really were John Roberts, but he's not, I checked. President Barack Obama 01:56, March 7, 2011 (UTC)

Shouldn't you be er..doing something else Mr President besides lurking around here? You know..Libya, Afghanistan, Iran...Republicans, the usual problems in your country?? What about Michelle and the kids??? --Laurels.gifRomArtus*Imperator ® (Orate) 13:10, March 10, 2011 (UTC)

I, The Woodburninator, will answer this question.

I generally am only around writing when I actually feel funny. When I know I can't cut it, I see no reason to write something that I, and others, do not find funny. Also, during college months, I was usually too busy. And now that I'm graduated, things come up. I need sufficient amounts of free time to allow myself a little comedy.

I have stuck around for 2+ years now just because, regardless of the VFH system, it is generally an open forum for me to write something that I find funny. The rules in place are vague and allow for some really fun and innovative creative writing. If it stays like that, I'll probably always be around a little bit when I have any talent in that moment.

Also, I agree with Hyperbole. So So needs to make his glorious return. That would probably make me read a little more. Woody On Fire! Wood burning.gifTalking Woody Stalking Woody 00:34, March 8, 2011 (UTC)
