I've been updated over yet another incident in IRC last night, another one in a long line of incidents. I've had a chat with RAHB and ChiefjusticeDS who got a glimpse of what happened and we've all agreed that the current situation in the IRC cannot continue.

In essence, IRC has moved from being Uncyclopedia's channel to #Cyberbullying/#youareafag/#I opp my friends because I can.

Channel ops has become something that anyone can hold, because it's fun to kick and ban people for the sake of it and set insulting headlines. Goatse links became a standard issue, multiple people left because they have been harassed every time they set foot in what is, at least in theory, Uncyclopedia's supporting channel.

So we have decided to take control over IRC:

1. We're going to look over the list of opps in IRC and non site admins who hold ops and have been abusing their abilities (unnecessary kicks/bans, opping other users for the fun of it) will be losing their channel ops.
2. Any harassment will result in a very long ban from both IRC and the site.
3. IRC is, by default, left open for people blocked on the site so they can argue their case. However, if the banned person is using IRC to continue acting like an ass, he will be banned from IRC for the duration of his site ban.
4. Non necessary opping, will result in removal of channel ops from all parties involved (again, this is only if the IRC op is not a site admin).

As mentioned, RAHB, Chief and myself all feel this is necessary to cleanup the shithole that IRC has become. I'm asking all of the site admins who are active on IRC to help us with this. I personally will try to be much more present on IRC.

And on a personal note - I've had it up to here with the stench that is coming out of IRC and has now starting to take over Uncyclopedia itself. People are more busy with fighting and harassing each other than then contributing to the site, amongst some of the contributors to the current shitty state of affairs are some long standing members of the site. I've personally been a bit lenient because I don't like to ban good editors. But this stops now. I'm going to deliver long bans for any sort of shitty behavior. You don't know how to vote without being an ass? You're calling other people names? You're creating shit storms under the ever successful "for the lulz?" you won't be staying here much longer. I know I have a reputation of an asshole, and I plan to live up to it in the near future. Behave nicely to each other or find a new hobby. ~ 19:27, July 29, 2010 (UTC)

I was getting tired of all the kicking from IRC (I won't name names), links that were inappropiate, and all the ass hattery. You should also tell people not to show pics of other users if they don't want to. Maybe some users who left because of IRC (like Luvery) would now come back to Uncyclopedia. Another thought

The only reason I go on IRC - and I bet this is true for half or more of Uncyclopedians - is because I need to find an admin to help me out with something - a vandal, or a page move, or a revert war, or whatever.

It sure would be nice if there were a way for admins to indicate "Yes, I'm an admin; yes, I'm available to help you with your problems; yes, that's actually why I'm sitting on this channel and I won't just tell you to fuck off because you're bothering me."

It was shocking how utterly impossible this was when I was running the Horace sock and impersonating a noob. Not only was there no way to tell if there was an admin around, but I got banned just for asking. pillow talk 20:28, July 29, 2010 (UTC)

It very easy to play a blame game, but it seems a number of people have lost sight of what Uncyclopedia is all about. What we have here is a community of contributors each member of which brings their own unique flavour of humour into the mix, and somehow, where it all mixes together sometimes something wonderful happens. Within that environment people are going to end up with hurt feelings over certain issues, people are going to abuse certain additional "powers" they have, but somehow, for the most part, we mostly get the balance right allowing people the freedom to express themselves, whilst trying to protect users from those who would seek to make this place less than enjoyable for those here to contribute.

That to me is key....finding that balance. Having the freedom to do and say whatever you like comes with a responsibility, and the need to recognise that there are other members of the same community who may have differing views but who need to find a way that they can find that balance. I don't believe anyone is blaming anybody for anything, however when an individual or even a group repeatedly acts in a way that alienates and frustrates longstanding members of the community then matters need to be addressed. That goes for users, admins and crats alike.

Somebody once said that Uncyclopedia isn't a democracy and they were right, Uncyclopedia is what you want it to be. As with all social experiments some people are going to end up with bigger sticks and will make "errors" of judgement. I hold my hands up and say I have acted in ways far removed from perfect and done things for all the wrong reasons, however I would like to think that I have always tried to hold the needs of the community at the forefront of my actions. Sometimes I've had to ban people that I regret having had to, for me the commitment people have made to long term contributing to the site goes a long way, and I would mostly prefer to find a "diplomatic" solution. Often that just isn't possible.

Last night I witnessed one of our most featured writers eating so much humble pie I'm surprised he didn't choke and practically begging to have what appears to me to be a rather pointless ban removed. I could see him getting more and more frustrated by the reactions of others to the point he began to say things he would probably regret. Others who witnessed this treatment, including some VERY active contributors, have threatened to walk away from the site. I think we have reached one of those moments were we all need to sit down and to look at what we have become, and what we wish to become.

If contributing to Uncyclopedia is important to your life you need to recognise that it isn't just your individual contributions that make it what it is, but those of the whole community. Do your actions enable this community to flourish and grow, or are you too wrapped up in your own ego to allow this? Many of us need to spend some time really considering what we are doing here, I would think it is a valid question that all of us should ask from time to time.... -- Sir Mhaille  (talk to me)

An oddity

I don't have an IRC client and don't want one. I have, from time to time, peeked in on IRC through both http://irc.wikia.com/irc.cgi and http://irc.wikia.com/unnews/. Each is mentioned in certain helpful pages on Uncyclopedia. But UnNews isn't in the former, and nothing other than UnNews is in the latter. Isn't that odd? And in the former, it always creates a phony username for me, and I cannot override it with my real handle. If I need to be brought up to speed, please advise on my talk page. I am going to take a stand right now and say that "Go write an article" is perhaps the worst "positive" catchphrase that I've heard spewed since that fucking Martin Van Buren invented the thumb-and-forefinger fuckhole. Clearly some users have problems with each other and it isn't going to resolve itself by simply putting down their pitchforks and picking up pencils. Writing articles is nice and all, and really 80% of what Uncyclopedia is about, but it isn't a solution to everything. It's rarely a solution to anything. Reminding people that writing is something we do isn't going to change anything.

That rant aside, I stand by Woodburner's sentiments on the other forum. It's something that I tried to tell Andorin but he seemed too stubborn to listen. Uncyclopedia's become an enormous ego trip: I think that's the core problem here. Just about the only 2 people who have said anything sensible in this whole discussion are Mhaille and Woody, whose essays overlap on two very important points. Saying civil things. You guys are fun, everyone of you. I don't know what all the problems are, but ones I've contributed to are trying to protect VFD's which I thought were unfair (BUTT POOP being deleted while being a VFG page at the same time, and one of its creators favorite things here, so said deletion drove him off into the bushes) and reacting to bullying that usually shows up as unfair bans (i.e. * vs # = 3 days). My only other problem is it seems that lots of people vote in favor of all articles on VFH that they find funny, no matter the user, while others vote mostly for their friends pages which then handicaps the other entries. That seems unfair, the "dead to me" thing that Dex talks about. This shows up in other ways too. In other words, a group acting in unison from an off-site agreement, proven or unprovable. Not that big of a problem either, all that can be eased with a word or two. And maybe if Israel can get rid of those damn settlements which are erected on the acquifers, which is what that's all about. VFG? I don't think that's a legitimate overrider to VFD, people wanted it gone although I had no idea how much that Mnb-whatever guy cared about it or that its deletion would lead to him leaving, but frankly, if he can't deal with VFD decisions then he's better off elsewhere, not to mention the fact that he and anyone else was and is completely free to maintain the template in their personal userspace. As for VFH, I don't think there's really a conspiracy there, I find it far more likely that if you see people are mainly voting for their friends articles, it's probably because they're not actually visiting VFH that much but their friends ARE whoring articles to them, I don't think there's any conspiracy there. -- Prof. Olipro KUN (W)Anchor Op Bur. VFG is in no way official. But if five people vote to say that an article is good and they liked it, that's a sign that if a VFD is 6-0 after 4 hours... it's probably because those five people haven't logged on in those four hours. What really bothered me about the BUTT POOP controversy is that everyone here has idiotic, unfunny in-jokes they like - whether it's A wizard did it or Euroipods or The word parakeet written exactly two hundred and forty-two times or whatever. The way BUTT POOP got handled, a few admins were throwing their weight around saying "My stupid injokes can stay but yours can't" - and when we finally got them to just leave it alone, it was hit by a very fly-by-night VFD when, under the rules of VFD at that time, it probably would have survived except for bad timing. The whole thing was just fucking lame. "Go write an article"

The above expression, which I usually hear from Mordillo, is annoyingly Motherly, but I take it to mean, gently, "Let the drama end now," and it usually works. In the previous section, Froggy refuses. "We need to stop what we're doing, take a look at ourselves, and have a frank discussion." But putting content on hold would slide toward exactly the "enormous ego trip" he says we are becoming. I haven't had issues with Froggy (except for the day he set out to solve the problem that I was winning an award too frequently, and that's settled). Separately, when one miscommunicates with someone, saying "he seemed too stubborn to listen" (thank you for adding seemed) is one-sided, as with the user page where Froggy announces his return to the site, with a newly bad attitude, to which everyone else must adapt, in the style of the Fat Acceptance League. I wouldn't say "motherly" as such, but a subtle way of saying "shut the fuck up with the complaining and get back to what the site is all about, you whinging fuckwits". People have differing styles of dealing with people, sometimes a gentle talk will do the trick, sometimes stronger methods are needed, however I have a pretty big problem with people using the big stick methodology when it is completely unnecessary. Having a "bad attitude" with people does little other than generate resentment and bad feeling amongst the very people we as a community should be supporting. "Respect me, I'm an admin" is a load of shite, respect is earned through your actions, and is some considerable way off the attitude of "fear me, I've got a big stick and I'm an antisocial arsehole with little better to do that to cause pointless drama in an effort to stroke my somewhat fragile ego". Rule #4 refers to the opping of non ops, not the ops opping themselves. Currently, you can't break rule 4 as the channel has the secure mode on. ~ 06:44, August 6, 2010 (UTC)
