Bots on the German uncyclopedia

Hi Cassie, thank you for writing to me in the German uncyclopedia. We have a rather high number of spam articles in our uncy, but with the current abuse filter we were able to drive down the spam to near nothing. However, what we still have is a high number of new user registrations that are obviously spambots. This is not a very urgent problem, it only fills our registration log but does no real harm. But I thought we could add a captcha challenge to the registration process in order to stop this. Is that possible (and if yes, how)? Cheers, --NaturalBornKieler (talk) 13:19, 8 March 2021 (UTC)

I would recommend the use of mw:Extension:ConfirmEdit (specifically the hCaptcha version, but it requires mediawiki 1.35+) to add a registration captcha; you can ask Lyrithya to have it installed for both the German Uncyclopedia and the English Uncyclopedia. (It requires some manual configuration, sadly.) I'm glad that abuse filters have toned much of the spam down. The thing is, abuse filters aren't good enough at discerning legitimate user creations from spambots, and rangeblocks, which is what the English Uncyclopedia currently uses, aren't the best idea either.

I think I'll petition Lyrithya or the sysadmins to properly implement ConfirmEdit in a more secure way; it might take some time since Mediawiki itself has to be upgraded to the latest version for that, but since Hcaptcha hasn't been cracked yet, unlike FancyCaptcha (which is currently used), it should improve from that point onwards.  Cassandra  (talk) 12:16pm  March 11, 2021

Slightly off topic discussion about block settings

Not to get too off topic, but can someone please explain to me how or even if they were blocked last time? I know they said they were blocked, but it may have been their IP (cuz the block log shows nothing), but I didn't realize if an IP was blocked you could still log in and edit your talk page but not other pages. Because the IP block had talkpage access enabled. Basically, if an IP is blocked with TPA and hardblocked, the exact settings are carried in any account that tries to edit. Personally, I would say that 1 year is a good delay before promoting to adminship status. I wouldn't mind granting this new "interface admin" thing to JJPMaster though, since it carries much less potential for abuse. Making me crat... eh, it'll help with some things, especially user rename requests (since I'll be able to handle those) and interwiki table requests (same reason), but my work schedule will still be, well, filled to the brim. As for Charlie, I mainly use my own judgement to direct 'em towards their actions. As such, Charlie's opinions are reflected in mine. So... I reverted that first edit primarily because it seemed unfunny, especially the "Skool" part. Gale, Cassie's talk page is not the place to start "compromising" about how we do things. A forum is the place to actually negotiate policy. However, As far as I am concerned there is nothing wrong with how the system works and I don't think you trying to add more and more rules to things that work fine are helpful in any way. The voting system is not broken, it doesn't need fixing, what Cassie has done and is doing is TOTALLY fine. I highly doubt you will find significant support for this idea and you should consider that starting up lots of forums or evening one forum proposing lots of unnecessary rules is a burden on the users of this website's and their time. Consider being very selective of new rules you propose and think them through carefully. Yes, but allowing 5 days is reasonable. Some people work during the week, so if a VFH is proposed on Monday, even closing it on Thursday isn’t enough. Command Line

In the Discord server, I promised to use JavaScript to turn the command line article into an actual interactive command line, and I've done that. Do however note that it is not even close to being finished, and you actually can't install it like normal scripts. You can only install it by substituting a template into your JavaScript files; by typing {{subst::User:JJPMaster/commandline.js}}, and even then you'll have to update it anytime I change it. Note that it is deliberately written like a 1980s text-based RPG, partially because the code was forked from the code for the command line article over at LifeWiki. This issue didn't really require a forum to begin with. The semi-protection of any featured article shouldn't be controversial now that we have the feature available. A lack of a response to the forum...is a response. In my opinion you've just emboldened Gale to pull a hissy-fit and create drama in a scenario where he doesn't get his way.
