Gawr Gura (がうる・ぐら), scientific name Selachimorpha gawrus is a female virtual YouTuber from Hololive's very first English-speaking generation. She is a shark girl who came from Atlantis who thought that life was boring down there, so she put on her shark hood and rose up to Earth. Her first words when arriving was simply the letter "a", which got her famous in the first place. She quickly rose to popularity, even beating her genmates, other Hololive members and even Kizuna Ai, who at one point was the most popular VTuber because she is the only VTuber that everyone knows.

Asides that, the other members in her generation are Mori Calliope (a grim reaper), Takanashi Kiara (a chicken pretending to be a phoenix), Ninomae Ina'nis (a Lovecraftian horror) and Watson Amelia (the only normal member in her generation, being that she is a detective).

History

Career

Gawr Gura made her debut on September 12, 2020. She began her first stream by saying the letter A, which also happens to be her first tweet. While people thought that she didn't know Japanese, it turns out that she managed to flawlessly cover a Japanese city pop song to the point where she got a lot of subscribers on YouTube every day. Her popularity was so meteoric that she surpassed Shirakami Fubuki (who, at the time was the most popular Hololive VTuber) and then is responsible for basically making VTubing accessible for English-speakers. She would then become the first Hololive member to get 1,000,000 subscribers, then 2,000,000 subscribers and then 3,000,000 subscribers to the point where she surpassed the first virtual YouTuber ever.

In 2021, she would reveal her second outfit, which at the time was the most viewed virtual YouTuber stream with over 100,000 people watching until Kiryu Coco surpassed that with her graduation stream, which had 400,000 people watching that. On the same year, she, along with other ocean-themed Hololive members formed UMISEA (which is literally sea-sea if you translate the first part, like how DC Comics is Detective Comics Comics). The other members in question were her genmate Ina'nis (or Ina for short), who is an "octopus" despite being a Lovecraftian horror, Houshou Marine (a pirate) and Minato Aqua (a sailor). Aqua would later graduate 3 years later because of disagreement with management. Asides from that she would later become the first VTuber to gain 4,000,000 subscribers on YouTube in 2022, although there are other YouTubers like CookieSwirlC who use a VTuber model that have a bigger subscriber count than her. But since CookieSwirlC didn't use a VTuber model until later on, this means that technically Gura is still the most subscribed VTuber at this point. However, it can be hard to stay at the top, as she would later take extended breaks because of health and personal reasons.

While she did make her first Holofes debut in 2022, she didn't get an idol costume until 2023. At this point she wasn't streaming a lot in May to the point where people forgot about her existence. 2020-2022 was probably likely the golden age of her career. In 2024, she would return to streaming on a regular schedule (for the last time, it seems) even though her last stream was in November 2023. Even though she reached 4,500,000 subscribers in that year, this year was quiet because, obviously the COVID-19 pandemic was no more and people were starting to get back to their normal lives. Then she would take another hiatus in September of 2024. It feels like that Gura would be the type of VTuber to stream once and disappear. Then she would take a break once again in February 2025.

Graduation

You might be asking to yourself, "why didn't Gura graduate earlier"? Well, surprisingly, it took her this long to graduate from Hololive. The extended breaks have obviously affected her, so it got to the point where on April 16, 2025, she would be graduating. By that, it means she's basically stop streaming forever, not getting your diploma. It would not take long for Gura's graduation stream to surpass that of Aqua's, since Gura's the one who basically spread VTubing across the world and it felt like it was already done in the first place. The departures of Ame and Murasaki Shion have further made it harder to stay in Hololive. Even if she did graduate last year or in the second half of 2023 (which never happened, obviously), she would still be the most popular VTuber alive. If she still streamed, she wouldn't stream a lot, maybe to the point where she could only stream once in a year.

This means that if you count VTubers who are still streaming, this would mean that Houshou Marine will be the most subscribed VTuber alive. Kizuna Ai would probably not top that again.

Trivia

• Apparently, since Atlantis didn't have French fries, that was another reason why Gura came up to the ocean.
• Gura dislikes wearing pants. This is evident in all of her costumes.
• Her birthday (June 20) is the same day that Jaws was released, coincidence or not. Contrary to popular belief, this is actually the anniversary of her arrival on land after leaving Atlantis, so this isn't her true birthday at all.
• Her shark tail is used as a butt plug similar to Kiryu Coco's dragon tail.
• During her breaks, she would go to Atlantis more often...except it's in ruins. What did you expect?
