World Cup Reskin

Okay, I'm sure you know what's gonna happen on Sunday right? For over an hour and a half the world will stop turing, and while every self respecting person is watching TV, we will want to celebrate (or at least I will). So how about we do a reskin, as that is the only way I can think of to commemerate the first World Cup Uncyclopedia has ever seen. Now, I've heard a couple people saying how we've had to many reskins of late (so far to in July). I would like to clear it with you before I start to make one. Also, people havn't really seemed too pleased with my reskins (or maybe its all part of them disliking me in general), but maybe you might want someone else to make the reskin. Anyway, I'm happy to help with a logo or something, just let me know if you want anything to happen Don Murphy. Oh, and this picture would make a good "moc feature" for that day either way: Image:Portugal_training.jpg. --The Zombiebaron 17:53, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Well, I sort of agree that we should space out the reskins. Granted, I am American and don't see the appeal of the World Cup in the first place, but we have already had two in less than two weeks. I think the most we should do is a logo switch for the day. I'm sure you or someone else could come up with a good footy parody - perhaps a deflated puzzle football or something. —rc (t) 18:46, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
I'll make a soccerball logo, if I have time. You should probably ask someone else to. --The Zombiebaron 21:14, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Mcgrue

  • Against Guess why... —rc (t) 19:44, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
    • I dunno. Is it because of the yoda incident in which I managed to tangle myself up? Is it too soon for more Grues? Is it bigger than a breadbox? Modusoperandi 20:22, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
      • Just because I'm sick of grues and have been for months and months. It would take a fantastic grue image indeed for me to vote For. Oh, and I didn't even notice it was yours, so it's certainly nothing personal. —rc (t) 20:25, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
        • No biggie, that explains it then. I hadn't noticed the proliferation of Grues (I've only seen one article and one pic) on Uncyc and, to be honest, had to google it to find out what it actually was (Zork? What the heck is Zork?). Text based adventures were never my thing - even the original Leisure Suit Larrys text parser made me want to not play anymore. Modusoperandi 20:32, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
          • Well, one of the very first things I contributed to on Uncyc, way back in March 2005, was building up the Zork article/game. Now there are like three different complete Zork games here, countless "eaten by a grue" references and images...so I've had well over a year to get tired of it all. —rc (t) 21:22, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Haven't I always? ;) But yeah, Rc needs to get back into the game... So you'll forgive him for missing one of the steps in featuring an article, I'm sure... --~ sin($) tan() 01:38, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
Don't listen to MoneySign! That is in fact not one of the standard steps. Because of the sometimes-collaborative nature of Uncyclopedia, I don't usually hand out {{FH}}s for articles. Since there are often more than one major contributor, this provides a dilemma for me: should I try, without really knowing the history of the page, to seek out the major-est contributor and give him the award? Should I check every edit in the history to determine who deserves it most? (No!) Or should I just give it to any and every significant contributor, thereby weakening the prestige of the award? In the end, the easiest thing to do is to just let the writer(s) determine for themselves. So if you think you are the primary writer of a featured article, you are welcome to claim it for yourself. (VFP is different since there is almost always only one artist for a featured image.) —rc (t) 02:08, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Gorillaz page

I'm coming to you with this because you were the first person to huff the Gorillaz page. At one point that page had plenty of discernable value. I remember editing it some time around (and probably before) the huff, and there was plenty there. I guess it was blanked and drastically changed since then, but the page as I first saw it was really good. The mirror link on the edit page doesn't bring me back that far. Is there any way to rescue it? Thanks. -Unknownwarrior33 04:19, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

It looks like the version you edited was deleted during Forest Fire Week, our semiregular spring cleaning. I've restored it for now, but I can't guarantee its perpetual survival. —rc (t) 05:25, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Main page vandalism

Hey RC, You about? did you notice someone replaced the featured article with the words "Go eat shit, fuckers"? -- Sir Armando Perentie Icons-flag-au.png KUN FP 06:05, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Click the "(continued...)" link. You might be surprised... —rc (t) 06:24, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Hey, Modusoperandi just explained to me that "go eat shit fuckers" was part of the joke. Even though I had clicked through and saw the full story, I still thought someone had vandalised the front but not the main piece. Anyway, stiff shit, as they say in the fossil scat business. -- Sir Armando Perentie Icons-flag-au.png KUN FP 06:27, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
I'm guessing that yours will probably be the majority reaction for the next two days. But oh well. —rc (t) 06:28, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
I'm just exposing my own ignorance. If I'd have been in the habit of cannibalising or fellating coprophiliacs I might have understood. I've lived such a sheltered life. -- Sir Armando Perentie Icons-flag-au.png KUN FP 06:38, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Interesting how Armando placed a comma where there isn't one... Hmmmm... Anyways, RC, I was thinking of maybe replacing "Today's featured article" with "Today's Fisher Price" or perhaps just "Fisher Price". Because clicking on the continued, people not in the know, as you put it, would be instantaniously confused when they see the title. Of course they could remedy this by reading the actual article... But you know... First impressions and all that... --~ sin($) tan() 14:09, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
I thought you were going to feature the retrospective! Don't feature the piece, you're supposed to feature the encyclopedia article on the piece of literature. What happened to being an online encyclopedia? Dawg.gif » Brig Sir Dawg | t | v | c » 20:06, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
First: I thought about that after seeing your mockup thing on the VFH talk page, but it didn't seem like it would make much more sense than not having the title. Perhaps something like "Today's featured literature: Fisher Price" would work.
Second, the retrospective is the "real" featured article, but it seemed more logical to show the original article first before delving into the analysis - and that's generally how people voted for it on VFH talk. There's really no elegant solution to the situation - feature the original piece and it looks like vandalism, or feature the retrospective and have it not make any sense on the front page. —rc (t) 02:13, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
But it would make sense. It's like featuring any article about a work of literature, you feature the article, not the literature. Dawg.gif » Brig Sir Dawg | t | v | c » 09:18, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
Right, but many people would be familiar with any "normal" work of literature an encyclopedia might feature, whereas (for whatever reason) Fisher Price hasn't hit the public consciousness yet. —rc (t) 16:47, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
What about the Voynich Manuscript? I'd never heard of it until the article. Probably because I'm one of those unrefined, possibly unwashed, members of the ignorant multitudes, but nevertheless, I had no clue what he was talking about at first. It's the same as Fisher Price. Dawg.gif » Brig Sir Dawg | t | v | c » 18:03, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
Ah, but I daresay the actual content of Fisher Price plays a bigger role in its analysis than the Voynich Manuscript does in its article, considering that the former is a twelve-page treatise on...four words. —rc (t) 20:51, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Congratulations

Thank you, kind sir Mhaille. And congrats on another successful competition! —rc (t) 05:40, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for making my unpaid job as a judge on the rewrites much much easier than it otherwise would have been. You achieved this by turning in a piece that was poised, suggestive, subtle and yet somehow violant. It was a very nice, controlled slab of writing which had me guffawing in admiration and carefully noting down all the ideas in my "steal this" book. My only reservation was that you singled out Paul as your target. I consider Paul to be the least degenerate of all the Beatles, and certainly the happiest. While all the Beatles were bouncy, Paul was probably the most bouncy. I only hope that he can take your barbed comments without finding it necessary to crawl into his little room under the stairs and cry helplessly into a bucket. --Sir Hardwick Fundlebuggy (Bleat) 09:51, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Why, thank you very much, Mr. Findlebiggy. I wouldn't worry too much about Paul - he knows I love him so. (Despite that holiday song "Siiiiimply haaaaving a wonderful Christmastime" x60. That one's a dud.) —rc (t) 16:54, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
Great job Paul! 01:14, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

More congratulations... and a query

First up, mucho congratulations on winning the best rewrite category in PLS. That Paul is Dead Hoax article was crying out for a good rewrite for ages.

Anyway, the real reason I am meeting your acquaintence today is to ask if it would be possible to perhaps implement an UnTV main page reskin fairly soon? The idea seems popular amingst people at VFH. I've pretty much got everything sorted for it, including the reskin and the css code, just need to know which article might be featured so I can work it into the piece. It would be brilliant if that article was one of mine (HowTo: Be a Tramp), which is currently doing quite well at VFH and could featured within the next week. I'm not really that bothered about that, though. Just saying it would be good. Anyhow, thanks and hope to hear your comments on this. -- Hindleyite 12:29, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

I'd just like to add my support to this, we've not had a reskin for a while, and a few of the last ones we had seemed a little vague. -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb.png (talk to me)
I was just thinking that we haven't had a reskin in some time, actually. UnTV is fine with me - if you'd like to hold off until HowTo:BAT is featured, that's fine. Otherwise the next feature, for Tuesday night, looks like it'll be Paradise Lost (or possibly Hermaphrodite, which is getting fast'n'hard support at VFH). —rc (t) 17:03, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

OK. To be honest, I'm not that bothered about it being HT:BAT featured on the reskin and would be happy for it to go ahead tonight with whatever is featured. Because My First Necronomicon and Paradise Lost are so close together in terms of votes, I have mocked up a version for each, just in case:

If by some fluke Hermaphrodite or something else catches up and overtakes these two (which I doubt will happen), as you mention, the reskin can be held off for a few days. Hope that's everything. -- Hindleyite 19:11, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

All right then. I think that's all I need. —rc (t) 22:17, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

The reason people are being so serious about this awards business is that since the introduction of the Order of Uncyclopedia, what was once a silly, fun thing has gradually turned into something actually useful and meaningful. In my view, the Order is a great reference for finding help and advice from established users - the users in the top two ranks are a good bet for finding someone who will help you with Mediawiki or writing or whatever. Of course there's still a silliness to the awards as well, and that's why we have so danged many of them. Also, remember that it can take a lot of genuine work to win some of the top awards, so it's understandable that people who have gotten them legitimately might be annoyed to see them adorning other people's pages.
Now, let's put the whole ordeal behind us, yes? —rc (t) 16:39, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

If you feel that you're the main author of the articles (and judging from the fact that one is an UnNews story and the other is a PLS entry, I assume you are), you can use the {{FH}} template. I don't usually hand out those awards myself because often it's hard for someone who had no part in actually writing the article to determine who is the primary author. I don't think it's technically vanity, RC. It's not about a particular individual, group, or organization - it's about the experience of being banned. It only mentions me because I was the one banned and because I reckon I have an amusing name which makes for a good title. The little insert on the second line is the only reference to "HF" and it's an ironic take on exactly those kind of self-referential inserts about subjects of articles.

OK, so this experience of being banned is localised to Wikia sites, so you might fairly accuse the subject of being too limited or in-joke. To mitigate against that I use the genre of 'prison/existential' literature to try and universalise the piece as much as I can.

What you could justifiably say, if you really want to vote against, is that the piece is based on a real event that involves other people and may well upset those people even though I am careful not to mention anyone or any real circumstance, except for Sannse and I cleared that with her first. Or you could say that although technically it isn't vanity/in-joke etc... it certainly could be perceived as those things and therefore should not be on the front page.

(Deep breath) But.... unfortunately, while being aware of all this, I think it's the funniest thing I've done on this site and I would love to see it on the front page for that reason alone, because I reckon funny trumps everything and rules should be bent in it's honor. Of course, you can still vote against on the grounds of it not being funny - I am always open to delusion. --Sir Hardwick Fundlebuggy (Bleat) 05:25, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Having read through your discourse, I still maintain that the page is vanity and that, while it's amusing, it's just not funny enough to me to overcome my distaste for vanity on the front page. If it really split my sides, I would vote for it even if I thought it was vanity. That is just my opinion - I'm not going to try to block it from being featured if it gets enough votes (which it almost surely will). I also, for the record, disagree that it's your best work. I think Bouncy Castle and Ernest Hemingway's Cookery Corner are both easily better, and you've written many articles I haven't even read. —rc (t) 05:46, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
To ease your pain, Rc, feel free to move on to the next one tomorrow if you want. Getting it featured is enough for me. Having it stay featured - well, it would only be worth it if some literary agent spotted it and dropped by for a cup of tea. I'm only looking forward now to getting my user page blanked many times over. --Sir Hardwick Fundlebuggy (Bleat) 09:21, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
No, I wouldn't do that. The voters have spoken and it'll get its (two) day(s) in the sun. —rc (t) 17:10, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Job queue

This odd Stastic is really high and I don't know whether it's ok to be so high, or it doesn't matter. I don't like seeing it grow from 5000 to 123000 in the course of a few months. I guess I am anal retentive on stuff like this.-- Sir Severian Severian1.jpg CUN.png (Sprich mit mir!) Kraut.png 05:32, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

I don't even know what the "job queue" is. Even after reading the Wikimedia page on it... —rc (t) 05:36, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
I think it does the jobs like change a template everywhere on a page where it lies, like when someone changes their signature and it's on a thousand pages. Maybe Famine would know?-- Sir Severian Severian1.jpg CUN.png (Sprich mit mir!) Kraut.png 12:49, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
Might be better to ask a Wikia person - Sannse or Splarka or Dawg/Wolf. They'd probably know. —rc (t) 16:44, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
I'm working on them now.-- Sir Severian Severian1.jpg CUN.png (Sprich mit mir!) Kraut.png 23:01, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

From Pewpewpew

Why thank you for your kind words. However, maybe next time. I'll merely inform someone who knows when a page must die. And as you say, writing might be easier but when i wrote something yesterday I was glad I kept it on my desktop before sobering up and deleting it. Pewpewpew 01:29, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Hah! I've been in that situation before. Don't worry about it, you'll find your place if you stick around. —rc (t) 01:32, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Shameless Coersion

Hellair RC, Since you seems to be the lord of VFH, could you please feature my piece before it gets quasied? it got 17 votes for and there was still traffic during last week....I am willing to pay a reasonable payola if you accept credit cards :) -- Brigadier Sir Mordillo Icons-flag-il.png GUN UotY WotM FP UotM AotM MI3 AnotM VFH +S 21:35, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

No, no. You're going about this wrong. If you really want your article to get picked over the others, I have two words for you: smear campaigns. —rc (t) 22:31, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
Really? Because I heard that everyone who has got a featured article over the last few months has had sexual relations with chickens. I'm just saying. There's probably nothing in it. -- The Masked Admin
That's actually one of the post-feature perks. You didn't think a measly {{FH}} was the only reward, did you? —rc (t) 22:40, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

So that's the way it's spelled. Well, yeah, so you see - this feature might be the only thing that stands between me and damnation....-- Brigadier Sir Mordillo Icons-flag-il.png GUN UotY WotM FP UotM AotM MI3 AnotM VFH +S 22:50, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

VFH

Have we started removing articles that people are still actively voting for (ie within the last week) now? I thought we had a policy where if there had been no votes for a set time they were removed? This isn't just about my article, but also Erraticus (which has FEATURE writ large all over it) which had two votes today. -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb.png (talk to me)

There's no set policy. Usually, for me, it's a combination of time + votes + activity, with the first two being most important. Currently there are nine articles on VFH with more votes than Wicker had, the nom was over two weeks old, and there was only one vote in the last week. Similarly with Erraticus, except it was more on the bubble because of more recent activity. Even if people have voted on it recently, that doesn't mean we should keep it around when its vote count isn't that high. —rc (t) 21:59, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

I am not kidding

Hey, just out of curiosity, why did you remove I am not kidding from VFH? It had +8 and was doing alright, so shouldn't it be at least quasi-featured? I don't really think removing it before its due time is fair to it or me. Please respond, thanks. --Bladetip 02:21, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

Oops! You're right, it should be quasi-featured. However, considering the high vote counts of many other articles on VFH, +8 in more than a week isn't strong enough. Thanks for pointing it out, though - I'm terrible at remembering to put the quasi tag on articles I remove. —rc (t) 02:30, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

Demented? Me?

Actually, I prefer to think of myself as someone with a good understanding of human behaviour, but I'm still at a loss to explain people who continue to do self-destructive things despite the results (hence, the article). :)

Going back to University this fall made me remember some of the people I met way back when. "D.T." was pretty unforgettable. In real life though, he was the one in the wheelchair, but he did treat people like commodities.

Thanks for the VFH nom.  :) ~ T. (talk) 14:00, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

(Ack, completely missed this message...) No problem. I actually thought it might have been David Gerard's newest when I saw the title, given his past tastelessness. As a fan of the good Dr. Seuss, I couldn't let such a cheap article go unrecognized. And I know what you mean...I'm meeting some of those unforgettable people now at school. Some are unforgettable in a bad way...but a few, at least, are the opposite. —rc (t) 05:00, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
Heh. The greatest thing about already winning WotM is feeling free to write absolutely anything. I'm really enjoying it. Though, with a debut article about a poop-flavoured soft drink, I'm not sure how I've escaped a repuation for tastelessness.  :) ~ T. (talk) 14:20, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

I usually don't hand out {{FH}}s because that would require me (who has never read most featured articles) to search through article histories and try to figure out who is the primary author. But if you feel that you are such, feel free to add it to your userpage. —rc (t) 16:59, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

blackface baleted

Me blackface thing was summarily deleted, maybe because it was an excuse to insert some images I made, anyway it never had the chance to fail in a weeks time.

the reason was supposedly that i put a {{not funny}} template on, maybe an IRC or a construction might have been better.

Perhaps a different page name would have been more suitable, or perhaps I just don't have what it takes, being recruited from wikipedia and all. Grumpyyoungman01 13:28, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

I agree that the article needs a lot of work. If you'd like, I can restore it to your userspace for you to work on until it's finished and ready to be moved to the main article space. And actually, we welcome Wikipedians - despite our perceived "war" with them, most users here don't have a real problem with WP. I use it myself often. —rc (t) 00:06, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
