Ad perpetuam memoriam de Sol Invictus

Composure1, writer of UnNews and humble servant of Uncyclopedia, sends personal greetings to you [insert username here], on this festival for our glorious god Sol Invictus. While many heathen have long abandoned our undefeated sun god, especially since Emperor Theodosius I banned the holiday in the year 390, I know that you are a true believer like me. In progress[edit | edit source]

If you don't want your pages categorized and such, you should use {{construction}} or {{WIP|~~~~~}} --Splaka 22:02, 23 Sep 2005 (UTC)

I didnt figure that within such a short time someone would try and move it already.

Also, such articles as "Soviet Premier" and "United States Presidents" are lists as well, yet are just fine. I dont see why this list should be any different. Rangeley 22:04, 23 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Well, the MTU tag is not a threat of immediate move, it is a suggestion to the creator that their page might be better in Undictionary: (and anyone who doesn't do that (or flesh out their page to a full article) in 7 days probably doesn't care if we delete it). --Splaka 22:09, 23 Sep 2005 (UTC)

It is more fleshed out now, but I dont want to jump the gun and add more to the list before I know what the creator of the idea wants to do with it. He has yet to make the other two articles, and I was looking to give him a bit to create them, before doing it myself as he may have something in mind.

But regardless, why is this list not ok, while the various others are? Rangeley 22:12, 23 Sep 2005 (UTC)

If you think a page is too small, feel free to add an MTU tag. New ones are more worthy of MTU because the usage of the tag is somewhat new (the admin are tired of all these small pages lately). If the other pages are new (like less than a day) they'll probably be tagged too (the order this is done can be confusing, there are several people who do it). Again, the MTU is more of a suggestion. When I added MTU to your page, it was only 4 lines (IIRC), and brand new (that would be considered rather small, peruse the Undictionary: to get an idea). Many small pages that get created are ignored by the user thereafter, so it is easy to find them later if we tag them somehow. --Splaka 22:21, 23 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Alright, so I guess the main point is that mine is new, while others are not. And apperantly, there is no difference other then this between my list, and the lists for Presidents of the US, and United Spades, Soviet Premier, etc.

And no, I do not think these should be moved off site. Rangeley 22:27, 23 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Oh, it is not a move offsite, it is just a move to Undictionary: namespace (Uncyclopedia is too small to warrant multiple domains). It just entails renaming the page, and including it in the undictionary list. eg: Undictionary:Kilt --Splaka 22:36, 23 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Hi Rangely: I moved my Trudeau article to "Pierre Trudeau, Canada's Philosopher King", and I've created a temporary placeholder at the old, i.e., "Pierre Trudeau", location. Well, do you think mine is out of hand? I used a template from Wikipedia for Canadian Prime Ministers, it seems to keep things organised to me. Rangeley 20:59, 20 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Like I said, not a complaint. After about 100 image uploads though, you might want to put them on a sub-page, text-link them, or link to the upload log. *grin* --Splaka 21:16, 20 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Liberal and conservative templates[edit | edit source]

I actually agree with you completely on the use of the Conservative template. Unfortunately, the law of unintended consequences seem to be at work here. Another user started placing the Liberal template on War on Terra and Intelligent Design. A basic axiom of quantum semiotics states that large number of observations of political spin in a meaning system creates a heightened entropy that can ultimately lead to collapse of a discourse system. --KP CUN 01:09, 24 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Only hypothetically of course. An effective solution to this puzzling dilemma may in fact lie in the use of counter revolutionary tactics to suppress the misuse of templates, and restore them to their cheifly intended use as a method to improve articles. Rangeley 01:14, 24 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Why not just use the standard Rewrite template? --KP CUN 01:17, 24 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Because I felt something such as this is more applicable and specific, as it was supposed to state the precise problem. I dont see a whole lot of funny articles about liberal people, and this was meant to target those specific ones and get some writers who knew how to be funny to fix them up, rather then the people who have been making them and appear to be limited to: 'Using its power, Ted Kennedy made himself Goblin King in 1812, though a latter effort to make himself Lizard King was thwarted by an unknown shaman, Ray Manzarek.' Rangeley 01:22, 24 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Again, I agree completely with your reasoning here. The problem is the law of unintended consequences. I would prefer avoiding a template war where all sorts of articles are getting labeled politically. We would be better off with an Alternate Universe template stating that the article is funny in the alternate universe, but not in ours. --KP CUN 01:33, 24 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Yea, I guess that would work. I simply couldnt refuse the chance to put Reagan on a template. Oh well, Ill make the new one. Rangeley 01:37, 24 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Put Reagan in a template labeling humor as old, crusty, and senile (and now dead). --KP CUN 01:38, 24 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Side note: War on Terra and Intelligent Design have been reworded so that I no longer think they contain an overpopulation of cliched attempts at left-wing political humor, and now merely contain an unhealthy population. --Nerd42 21:00, 27 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Done. Just a minor question though, will only one of those four nominees get promoted? Rangeley 16:29, 25 Oct 2005 (UTC)

I think that any who get sufficient support from other members (as judged by the bureaucrat hosting the event (Paulgb)) will be elevated, although he probably will limit the total elevated to around 7 to 10ish. You can nominate others if you feel they are up to snuff too. --Splaka 19:43, 25 Oct 2005 (UTC)

{FormerUSSR} template[edit | edit source]

Hi ... This template is a good idea. I was wondering, though. Is it intentional to list some (but not all) of the country articles for former Soviet republics? For example, I noticed that Russia and Belarus are missing from the template, as well as duplicate articles such as Moldova in addition to Moldavia. By the way, there is a List of countries at which you can find all existing articles on former USSR republics. Thanks. --Ogopogo 03:47, 29 Oct 2005 (UTC)

P.S. Thanks for the vote.

I wasnt entirely sure if it was wise to add it to the estonia, latvia, etc articles due to their highly developed nature, but besides this there really wasnt a reason. So you can go ahead and add them if you do so choose. Rangeley 03:54, 29 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Splarka noticed the mistake on IRC and we were worried - a. that Rangley might be an active user, or b. that someone might sign up as Rangley and be retroactively made a sysop. When we noticed the user blanked the VD, we were worried. It turned out that it was just rcmurphy doing it as a joke. And the account has no admin powers because it wasn't created when it was made a sysop. --Paulgb 02:19, 31 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Alaska[edit | edit source]

I had put the Canada template on the Alaska article in light of the article's opening sentences: "Alaska is Canada's most western province. It was bought from the Indians in 1823 for 12 beads and a moose and is named for the popular dessert, Baked Alaska." Thus, in Uncyclopedia lore, Alaska is claimed by both the US and Canada, hence the dual templates. --Ogopogo 22:25, 5 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Except it isnt. Just as the prime ministers of Canada had to be in the right order, states must be states. ~Sir Rangeley Icons-flag-us.png GUN WotM UotM EGA +S (talk) 22:30, 5 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Read my first post. "Alaska is Canada's most western province." And the Canada template includes Alaska. This doesn't stop Alaska from being the U.S. States template as well. --Ogopogo 22:35, 5 Nov 2005 (UTC)

I am fairly sure I did read it. The first paragraph has been fixed. If the Canada template includes Alaska, it is incorrect. Just like it, at one time, wrongly included Swaziland. ~Sir Rangeley Icons-flag-us.png GUN WotM UotM EGA +S (talk) 22:37, 5 Nov 2005 (UTC)

The Alaska article was funnier before the change you just did. It doesn't have to match Wikipedia. --Ogopogo 22:39, 5 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Then why did you keep removing my attempts to add humorous people to the order of Canadian Prime Ministers, in replacement of not so funny ones? ~Sir Rangeley Icons-flag-us.png GUN WotM UotM EGA +S (talk) 22:42, 5 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Because Canadians have enough problem with history. Having the Can PM list in order, followed perhaps with fictional PMs, like in your recent list of U.S. presidents, at least helps Canadians keep PM ordering straight chronologically to help them read, write and understand articles and thus for the list to have red links to know which articles for PMs still need to be written. The U.S. State templates which list canonical states will help people out to know the canonical states, but there's nothing wrong with a bit of humour within a state article itself (such as calling Alaska a Canadian province) that might not following wikipedia and nothing wrong with Alaska having a Canada template as well as a US States template. --Ogopogo 22:49, 5 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Im not going for wikipedia. Im going for humor related to the states. And thats just what Alaska is, a state. ~Sir Rangeley Icons-flag-us.png GUN WotM UotM EGA +S (talk) 22:53, 5 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Iraq War[edit | edit source]

Sorry if I'm stepping on toes as a new editor to Uncyclopedia, but I know my way around a wiki, even a tongue in cheek one, and I'm not really sure where the "satirization of common arguments used by those against the Iraq war" idea is explained as the prevalent theme of the article. For my part, the edits removed irritatingly normal POV edits that seem to have a fraternal relationship with reverted Wikipedia edits, and my edits were a small attempt to move this article more toward the "good" Uncyclopedia articles that focus on absurdity and ignore pathetic attempts at humor that are nothing more than rehashing of normality so subtley as to create a reality instead of satire.

This said, I do claim little knowledge of the Uncyclopedia wiki. As a long term editor of Wikipedia I am fully aware that the deepest reading of the explanitory pages of a wiki are completely worthless in understanding the true dynamics of said Wiki, but I don't claim that my edits are particularly funny or worthwhile. I just don't understand where the supposed satirization of left-wint anti-war arguments is detailed, or why a different perspective isn't appreciated.

A distinctly humble caveat here, I'm really trying to learn this Wiki because I think I could contribute something other than some sophomoric joke about squirrels and I'm really trying to understand the dynamic here.

Thanks.--TheGrza 08:28, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Don't know the flow chart around here, but I left a message at Angela's talk page to get a larger picture of how this whole thing works. I'm pretty confident of my ground over in WikipediaLand, but here I feel disoriented and lacking stable ground. This is, as I pointed out in my comment, not an attack on your or your edit skills, just an attempt to get clarification of something I don't understand, from someone not directly involved with the issue. Standard procedure, nothing more. Just thought I'd let you know I left a comment elsewhere, fairness and all. Thanks, --TheGrza 08:52, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Second addendum, as a new editor I'd like to put you in the weirdest position possible (the spirit of uncyclopedia, right?) but if there is someone more appropriate than Angela to make a comment to, or somewhere more appropriate to discuss this matter, could you do a little cut and paste action, or perhaps let me know where to do it? It's not like it's a complain about you, but you certainly wouldn't be making your own argument by pasting my nonsense anywhere and I understand if you'd rather I do it. Just looking for a little help here. Sincerely, --TheGrza 08:55, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

As you requested, I've copied and linked the various talk pages here. ~ T. (talk) 14:56, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

China[edit | edit source]

Why reverting to your totally unfunny version? --Suresh simple.png Swami A. Suresh 21:15, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Steve Ballmer the leader of China? Where's the funny? Having Hu Jintao the leader of China allow someone to satire him. If you didnt know, he is the real leader of China. Some things are best left real, such as the name of the country, the leader, other things. Its a perfect opportunity to make fun of a world leader, don't let it pass you by. Plus, you already have your own version to mess with, Wal-Mart's Republic of China. ~Sir Rangeley Icons-flag-us.png GUN WotM UotM EGA +S (talk) 23:29, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Steve Ballmer was added to motivate Tibet as Major Issue. That remark is really the one I want to keep (I spent 6 months in a newsgroup with Chinese Nationalists about the Tibet question, so on second thought, maybe "Blind Spot" would be better than issue ). Ans seriously: whar does Trucial Bhangledeshi Dictatorship (in reality, merely dictatorettes) smell like? --Suresh simple.png Swami A. Suresh 03:33, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

I didnt come up with that one, but it appeared to have slightly more to do with China then the other one. As for the Tibet deal, I know someone who moved from China to the USA, and I asked them their thoughts on Tibet. They didnt know what it was. Blind spot, perhaps. It might be an interesting addition to the body of the article, not so much in the generally serious toned infobox. ~Sir Rangeley Icons-flag-us.png GUN WotM UotM EGA +S (talk) 04:38, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

Template:Infobox Country[edit | edit source]

i just noticed that you had deleted the field "population" in the template. i agree it's not funny. while further editing the template, i inadvertently added it back but with an "if" clause this time. the reason i did this is 'cos many pages (Alaska, Georgia & Kazakhstan to name a few) were already using the "population" field but the template was not registering them. i realize you were instrumental in setting up the basic template. now there's a slight problem i'm facing. i'd like most "nation" articles to use this infobox for the sake of consistency (as opposed to using code or single-use templates). i could not adapt it to france in my first attempt. most european nations use "formation" in place of "independence" and almost none use the field "religion." do you think it'd be a good idea to make these (mandatory) fields optional in the template or something else? or just force the existing template on all "nation" pages? hope you'll spend a few mins poring over this. -- mowgli 13:43, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

I would like for the template to have things mandatory as it does now. If a specific nation requires additional things, it can use a modified template. ~Sir Rangeley Icons-flag-us.png GUN WotM UotM EGA +S (talk) 14:09, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
very well. then i shall start incorporating the template in the european (and other) "nation" pages. obviously, i'll leave the fields for "religion" & "national heroes" blank (unless i can think of something creative) while forcing them to declare "independence." i'll leave a list of the pages i have touched for your reference and maybe you can fill the blank fields in your spare time. thanks. -- mowgli 14:46, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
Well, if it is just the "established" thing, then you can add that as an optional one as it could be more applicable. I just dont want a can of worms opened where a million fields can be added in, and want the template to look pretty much the same in all nations. ~Sir Rangeley Icons-flag-us.png GUN WotM UotM EGA +S (talk) 18:42, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
well wikipedia's wikipedia:template:infobox country is self confessedly abstruse and we need a simpler thing here - no doubt about that - but it's also a fact that europe never "found" independence (<-- a can of worms right there) unlike the colonial rest and no european nation uses the field "independence." instead they use "formation." sigh. -- mowgli 18:05, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
Yea, it would be more realistic to have it as an option. ~Sir Rangeley Icons-flag-us.png GUN WotM UotM EGA +S (talk) 18:42, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Re:Hey[edit | edit source]

My apologies, but just for the record, I'm not an active participant in this round of "FFW" and would have deleted that article no matter what the day, week, or month. HOMESTAR ME!!! TURTLE ME!!! t o m p k i n s  blah. ﺞوﻦ וףה ՃՄ ண்ஸ ފއހ วอฏม +տ trade websites 03:42, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Articles consisting solely of a Paint mock-up of George Bush with a moustache resembling that of Hitler's don't really seem to merit my patience. If I honestly thought that an article was coming, I would have refrained from deleting it, and if I would have seen a respected contributors username (such as yours) I wouldn't have wasted my time. However, I did not see these things. Even if I had I still would've had all the right in the world to delete that page, a deletion that any other self-respecting Uncyclopedia adminstrator would have made in an instant - I guarentee it. Honestly, if you're so taken aback by this honest mistake than I'll gladly sit here all night arguing with you, but frankly I'd rather we drop so I can go get some sleep. Wow, another long-time Uncyclopedian gives me a thumbs-up. I'm very honored to be recognized by an Uncyclopedian who is, himself, very decorated (and rightly so). Thanks for hanging around even after all the Wikia stuff. Uncyclopedia is a better place for it.--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 01:30, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

OK, I got bored with circular edit/reedit of this page. So, what's wrong with version I sent? In other words, we must make a deal on this article, or we will have cycles.

Thanks for clearing up the issue, Rangeley – I guess I’ve seen too many crazy internet rants in my day for me to work out that your one was just a satire. The Iraq War is exactly the sort of issue that brings the fundamentalists out – so I obviously misunderstood the article. To be fair, there are plenty of other people who come to that page and make the exact same mistake. It would have been nice for me to learned all this before I got blocked(and now the other admins/users are having fun putting in the boot). I *thought* I was doing the right thing by reporting a perceived problem and instead I’ve antagonized half the admins. Fan-freaking-tastic. I'm not likely to bother trying to ‘fix’ other poeple's articles anymore. MaxMangel 11:31, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
Why don't you update the article so that more people find it funny. Your "subtle humor" is barely understood by anyone. It's like something that would be in Libopedia, if it existed. (Uncyclopedia = over the top funny, not something that 50% of the people think is the literal truth and 40% find insulting)

Conservapedia[edit | edit source]

I noticed your discussion over there with Andrew. A small bit of advice: once he has his mind set on something it doesn't really change. (I'm a Wikipedia admin and helped out at Conservapedia before getting sick of Andrew). My advice is that if he wants his entries to read like parodies or childish rants let him.
