Hey, if you have something to run with, by all means do so. It's going to be a very long time before I have the capacity to go there. I'm still trying to allocate a little time to fix/expand Redd Herring and get it out of my userspace at the moment. I'm actually (finally) doing the book writing now, so the next couple months are going to be fairly occupied.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  22:36, November 2, 2009 (UTC)

Thanks man. I definitely have a lot of time to kill these days. I'm trying to do some "serious" writing which is WORK. Trash[edit | edit source]

Looking at the recent changes to see who else is skipping out from their Christmas duties for a few minutes and came across your Trash. Very funny! An idea, maybe enlarge the pictures so they really stand out much more, they are some of the funniest things on the page. I hope Santa was good to you, and yes, he does exist and I've got the bloodstains to prove it. Aleister in Chains 15:18, December 25, 2009 (UTC)

I definitely like that idea. I guess I've been skittish about getting too picture crazy (size and quantity) in the past due to numerous complaints about my zeal for images. <--I wrote that all pissed off once and still haven't really finished it. I think the trash project will be done today (linking now) and be retitled "It's your turn to take out the trash"--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  15:24, December 25, 2009 (UTC)
Just about to log off and saw your quick answer. Pictures are great in the right context, n my opinion, larger sometimes better. And in that article, pictures worth 10,000 words, or at least 10 words. Talking of pics, I poaked into your secret stash, would you mind if I used your princess on the tree at some point as I enlarge my Anne Hathwaway article? Would fit well with her in the Princess movies. Off to rejoin the human race, Aleister in Chains 15:31, December 25, 2009 (UTC)
All pics are free to use by the commons license and I definitely have no paternal attachment to anything I create or find when it comes to images. That particular image got booted from HowTo:Be A Damsel In Distress and isn't being used by anyone right now as far as I know. It's a great pic, use it if you can--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  15:36, December 25, 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, but I wanted to ask because the picture was on your inner-secrets page and if you had plans for it. . .placed it in the Anne Hathaway article. Your 'Damsels' is very good, and I'll do a full read of it later today. Just now the tree caught fire, and I have to evacuate, but wanted to get this to you before the smoke gets too thick. Thanks again, Aleister in Chains 18:39, December 25, 2009 (UTC)

Very good page. For those of us with a sense of history the article's humor actually creates a probably seldom reported-on timeline. Nice work. Maybe you should hold it until after the first of the year. One mistake (maybe on purpose). Beatrix The Bride actually fought the Crazy 88's (88 of them), and let one go, oh, you may be counting the other guys and girls in the room before the crazy 88 came along, 12 more? “Adding is usually good, removing entire paragraphs is generally not so good.”

I highly respect featured articles. This is why I have an opposite stance on the subject: when adding content you have to assure that the version you created is at least as funny as the original. That means VERY funny. Failing to do so may result in the removal of your contribution. I act in this spirit.

Nominated your Mondo for feature, I was interested if you could get the hat trick, and maybe it can be a four-goal period. Enjoyed Mondo, graphics were very good and the video link and optical illusion make the page jump. My signature is under construction, so this sig will have to do for now-- User:Aleister in Chains 19:05, January 1, 2010 (UTC)

I noticed the sig getting wild. Mondo is going to get resoundingly kicked off VFH, I can guarantee that. Just like Gay Jesus would. It really needs to be reformatted but since not many people like it.......it's a mess.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  19:08, January 1, 2010 (UTC)
BTW, this is stuck at 9/0 and is a vote short of possible passage.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  19:22, January 1, 2010 (UTC)
It seemed fine on my monitor. And are you sure people wouldn't appreciate it, was it tested under fire at some point? I left a note on it to take it down, but I guess I'm either too much in the loop or too far out of the loop to understand why it's not feature material. Humor is subjective, of course, but I can't believe people would be offended by such fun. User:Aleister in Chains 19:50, January 1, 2010 (UTC)
I believe it got nommed once and soundly rejected. Mondo's been around for a year and didn't even make Hype's informal "good article" list. It supposed to look like a tight, solid magazine but the pictures get whacked out in anything but one monitor setting. I'm not sure if it's the imaginary in jokes not being as funny as real ones or what. If I had it pee reviewed by 5 different people I'd probably get vastly different advice on how to fix it. I just kind of gave up on it awhile ago. It taught me a lot about photo creation though. If I had the html skills I could sew it together for any browser setting but I wouldn't know where to start.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  20:30, January 1, 2010 (UTC)

Happened to check recent changes after working on my Anne Hataway (Romartus put some great pictures of H. in this morning), saw your note listed, read the article, pointed the links (a research project in itself, those links) and now I'm going to have to nominate it. (What am I becoming, your fucking agent?, I want 15% of the nothing we make here). Extremely good work. In the real world, and some of the time, I'm actually a historian of note in my field, so your work interests me on the humorous, the "strange" aspect, and on the historical coverage you give to a subject. Again, nice work, and maybe you can have some kind of record for features in a two week period or something. (today's feature will run tomorrow) Aleister in Chains 5th Uncy Anniversary, MMX
That was a labor of love. I wanted to make it quick but I just couldn't do it. I counted roughly 88(?) links to movies including a couple TV refs. I've been a monster movie fan since I can remember (and I'm old) so a lot of those direct references to specific movies came easily. A lot of research on individual movies can be gleaned by just watching MST3K, something I also like. I appreciate the whoring for me! Now I'd better catch up on thank-you templates. The last couple days have been solid with rewriting and researching extra links for B-movie.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  11:02, January 6, 2010 (UTC)

OK, an entire comic book with succinct references, realistic comic graphics, a political statement using an American comic icon? Made on one of your sub-users pages? Has uncy seen anything like this before? The other, yes, that page should just go ahead and be finished, and I'd have fun helping if a slot's open. The sub-page editor/owner? has come back for a few days lately, and from the looks of his letter probably wouldn't mind much if it was finished. Ok back to the comic book. You sacked the quarterback. Joey Buttafulco 9.11,MMX
I was literally gagging with laughter while finishing this today. Not just the usual snickers. I actually haven't seen anybody do it but I imagine that you'd need a compelling story line to replace the existing one and a lot of patience with the image editor. I made the storyboard first and had an idea of where I was going but it "wrote itself" a little. I think if you hit edit on top 10 apocalypses, you'll see hidden type that denotes sections "reserved" for people. Perhaps contacting anybody still listed would be a good move. I threw my 2 sections in and I'd rather see more people contribute, which was the original idea. --DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  01:29, January 9, 2010 (UTC)
BTW, the comic has been mainspaced ;-)--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  01:31, January 9, 2010 (UTC)
Did you copy the graphics from the existing comics, or create them by image selection, photoshop, etc.? A question, did you literally create this thing from scratch? VHF is the minimum for this thing, anticlimatic even, and I'm surprised its not up already. Fascinating, as Spock would say. Balloon Boy Hoaxer UNCY, Year 6, MMX
I have two Marvel Anthologies. That came from "Bring On The Bad Guys" and features select panels that are part of the origin of Red Skull story, which spreads over two complete mags. So, some of that is from the first and some from the second mag. That's original Stan Lee stuff from the 40's. I scanned it and clone tooled the text out of the boxes. It was nice to work with soft, white, book quality paper. It's a little beat up but the comic reprints are still nice looking.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  01:49, January 9, 2010 (UTC)
"What's Up Tiger Lily" comes to uncy, and the next step would be uncy movies on the order of National Lampoon's Animal House. You've taken something to a new level, but I don't know what. Nice work. And nice to be one of the first to read it, since I'm online with Lawrence O'Donnell in the background. If you have a minute check out "Anne Hathaway", took some good ideas and a few photos from Romartus and a pee review and shaped it up fairly well. The A on your forehead, jeez, new level. Stan Lee turning over in his grave, if he's dead Never on Sunday, MMX
He's still alive. Lee has to see your work. Chained MMX
OK, I just did a speed read through Hathaway. Remember that my peer review opinion is jaded and I've been outright flabbergasted by some featured articles in the past. Anyway, the first thing that sends "against" shivers up my spine (from others, not me) is what they call the "randomizer" effect. In other words, a handful of instances where seemingly random interactions and factoids get jumbled together to form experiences by the subject. I liked the prose a lot though. If you get a pee review with a score above 40, you can nom yourself but I can do it for you if you want to "face the music" - ie the criticism from the againsts. Just my guess but I can see a couple of those with "randomizer' commentary for this article, just my take. Your call. I spent my first couple weeks here just writing a bunch of UnNews stories that nobody cared about. No matter what, it's a learning experience. --DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  02:40, January 9, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, I'll look at that, but the randomizer effect is probaby an intergral part of the story as I play Hathaway as someone with a wide range of interests whose talent for method acting actually moves her quickly in and out of life situations which other people would take many years or decades to "accomplish" (as they hold or maintain their habit patterns throughout their lives). So randomizing, on one level, "is" the idea. Probably will hold off on a nom for this one for awhile, I've had fun playing with it though. There are a few others I'll put up for pee review as well. Thanks, a nice offer. Al in Chains MMX

So, it sounds like you need to find a way to convey that theme better. That went over my head. It would have to be in the first few sections but there's nothing wrong with spelling it out a little. Or just a way of tying it together while still being random....hmmmm.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  02:58, January 9, 2010 (UTC)
A good suggestion. And I guess much of my writing here has that same theme (as subconscious to me as it is to Anne as she trances out into character). Anyway, time for sleep, and kudos and congrats on your literally kickass project! sig MMX
Hey, thanks, a good suggestion. I roughed in a few paragraphs near the start of Hathaway, and will polish them further, which should quell the randomness concerns (for randomness, see my "Dreaming"! lol) The nomination for Enhanced seems to be going well, I thought it would have concerns, and the criticism, what there is of it, seems more about what Uncy "is" than about your creation. Again, nice work, and if it makes feature I'm interersted in how it will be presented on the page. Stan Lee Playoffs start, MMX
Another thought. I was just drawing a comparison with the Monty Python sketch about the Piranha Borthers and the Lieutenant Henry "Snapper" Organs who's doing his job while aspiring in his acting career. Just something to ponder and perhaps take suggestions from.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  16:18, January 9, 2010 (UTC)

DOH!![edit | edit source]

Damn Simpsons. I can't work on Anne Hathaway again, since some themes in it (singing, princess stuff) distantly echo a little of the Simpson's episode tonight, which featured Anne as a Princess character who sings and marries Krusty the Clown. So I don't want to add to it if it would look like I'm incorporating Simpson material. So, give it a good more detailed read, and only if you like it (lots of changes since you read it, including "fixing" randomness by adding data in several places near the front as you suggested) I will take up your kind offer for a nom. Damn the Simpson's. And hey, congrats on the back to back featured, and you have a chance at a hat trick with the take-off of Enhanced. That would be fun. Anyway, DOH!! Son of Sam(my Sosa) The Lord's Day, MMX

Sure, will do. Check this out: I went through both my Marvel anthologies, "Bring On The Bad Guys" and "Sons Of Origins", plus the pile of free comics I've amassed and found absolutely nothing that looks like it could be made into another project that didn't look forced. That situation appears to have changed when I read this news this morning. Suddenly, unrelated and disparate panels and stories have the possibility of being merged together cohesively into a story about copyright law and the rights of artists. I'll be looking through everything again to see if it can be done. If so, it's going to be a lot more work than "enhanced interrogation", that's for sure. Looks like I have some "thank you" templates to create and distribute for the mean time though.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  10:40, January 11, 2010 (UTC)
Haven't heard of this, I hope the Kirby heirs win. That would throw a wrench in some of the major corporate entities, probably even Disney. It would work very well as a comic/journalistic document. I still hope Stan lee somehow gets to see your homage. He'd either get a kick out of it or it would be the final push to the end of the panel for him. Can his lawyers stop its showing, is copying someone's artwork protected under satire law? Are photos protected or available for satiric use, even in an item for sale? I thought maybe the next step for Uncy would be to issue a book of app. 250 of its best or most interesting pages, sort of how the Onion took the next step with it's books. It crossed my mind but I didn't bother to find out the stats for such things. Red Herring getting hung up on VFH, seemingly forever, certainly helped. Thanks a bunch guys. I have one more comic to do and I'm done with that sort of thing unless somebody hands me a treasure trove of old comics - my puny "collection" is tapped. It's "The Strangest Superheroes Of All" "The X-Heirs"! Coming to a theater near you. Basically the X-Heirs (X-MEN issue #1) will be the litigious progeny of Jack Kirby and Magneto will play Marvel Comics. I'll make both sides look as bad as possible. I just spent all day prepping the cover and making two large X-Heir logos, that look just like the ones in the mag, for the cover and the first page.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  02:27, January 12, 2010 (UTC)

That is simply one of the most professional satires I have ever seen. Serious respect there. You really should be WOTM again this month. --Nikau 13:11, January 12, 2010 (UTC)

Wow, thanks! I still can't believe I pulled that off in a couple full days.....or at all for that matter. I have one more comic in the works using X-MEN issue #1 but it's going to take considerable more effort than "Interrogation" to make a worthy piece satirizing the current legal battle between Jack Kirby's heirs and Marvel comics. (The X-Heirs) I hope you enjoy it as much but it's going to be tough to top "Interrogation". --DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  13:19, January 12, 2010 (UTC)

A Commie in My Closet[edit | edit source]

A probable hit and run user came on site yesterday and left a poem A Commie in My Closet and I spent a couple of hours finding photos and adding links to it, lol much of the time. That was fun, since you're running around on site I thought you might enjoy it. When the guy returns he'll get a shock to see his updated page. Yeah, I thought of the wotm too, but thought that someone can't win that twice. But if so, you set some new records this month, and its only a third of the way through it. Aleister in Chains up early for a round of Links, MMX

Phew! I think I'm going to be swimming in thank you's for awhile. I'll check it out later. As far as double wins on WOTM, I have no idea if it's been done or not but as far as I know it's not illegal. If people would rather give someone new the award, they'll vote appropriately.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  13:42, January 12, 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the nom on Hathaway. The minx princess should see her day. As for my nom cherry being broken, I was saving it but happened to wander onto Syndrome's page one night when he was alone, and damn, I was slipped a roofie and the next thing I knew I woke up on a sockpuppet;s lawn with a headache. On the writer of the month, if it was an ongoing contest then you'd win it hands down this month, and probably last, but it looks to be a traditional one-time honor, more of a Hall of Fame vote (and some of us will never be eligible, steroids). The problem gets to be when the site runs out of good writers to give it to, then it gets watered down. Like most of the drinks at Syndromes. Aleister in Chains VE Day, 1944
You may know this, but if not, you were put up for wotm, and are making a race of it. You should win, not only for your work but this would then place the award into a competitive monthly contest, which can only help the site as mad dogs and quite a few Englishmen compete for the Oscar. Aleister in Chainsed Twelveth of never, MMX

X-Heirs[edit | edit source]

Very good, thanks for the heads up on its completion. Execu-Tor. It would be nice if the heirs could read this, they'd enjoy it. Funny and clever, and once again gives an education about an ongoing event. Personally I hope the heirs win, stickin' with the union and all that. More later, thanks again Allah Chained Somwhere in Time, 1974

Read it again, and it holds up on a second read, with more "revealed" (I saw Avatar twice this last week, not much more "revealed" on the second run through, either I caught a lot or they didn't make it subtle enough). You put quite a bit of work into this, nice. Al'lah in Twains Krypton, MMX
Thanks! So...very...tired....I went back and tweaked/rewrote numerous speech balloons to get a solid storyline. The X-Heirs stuff was easy, I just wish I could have thought of something less cliche for iceman than "crackhead". The Hayes Family, WTF???? l,ol. Hey, take a couple of minute break and come see "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" (reached by typing in 'Iron Butterfly'), I'm building on an already existing page by a user you may know, and this is one I'll likely put up for VFH. Took a look, it seems that PF4Eva, who created and wrote the article, was just playing with the sounds (large and small opening letters. I'll pass it on to him/her/, a him I supppose. Above comment, yeah, "crackhead" was the only really sour note for me too. Didn't seem to fit with the era portrayed in the drawings. Have you come up with something else since, and is it even changeable at this point on the completed graphics? Thanks again, aicmmx
It was meant to break time barriers just like the conflict. Of course it can be rewritten easily. I'm going to have to sit on it for awhile before I can probably, effectively do it.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  23:44, January 20, 2010 (UTC)

You covered most of it. To add, I noticed several places where you can cut words to open up more room for enlarged captions ('welcome back to the meeting boys'--and he's representing the x-heirs--never get their day in court--the use of weekends/3 full days at the end, not really needed and opens up lots of room, etc.). And this is weird, the only place I really lol this time was with the crackhead jokes. I'm bi-polar or something. . . Use "Ginger" for "redhead"? either more or less lusting. Broke in a couple of months rather than years? So my main point is you can open up caption room for fun and profit. And so much of it is perfect, if more comes that way, there you go. Al MMX

Help[edit | edit source]

Loved the Hayes Family newsletter and have no idea why it took me so long to see it. Having absolutely no idea about wiki formatting, I've been trying to write Adolf Hitler's Secondary school report. But I can't work out how to put the pictures next to the correct subject. I even tried pirating your formatting, but I'm clearly too thick to work out how it works. Do you know any good guides that I can teach myself from. I'd kind of like it to look like the newsletter but possibly older fashioned. --Sog1970 11:54, January 31, 2010 (UTC)

I'll do what I can to help you. I was a complete knucklehead only a year ago. I learned by pirating too. That particular piece has one anomaly in that the width of the text field is controlled by the width of the 100th B-day template at the bottom. Not the way you're supposed to do it I imagine but it works. People like User:Spang have helped me in the past and there's a few other formatting gurus around for advanced stuff but pirating that newsletter format I tossed together and altering it to look different is easy. I'll hop on by that page as soon as I can and see what we gots. Intermittent use day today. --DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  12:18, January 31, 2010 (UTC)

I think Jay Sherman's boss was supposed to be a parody of Ted Turner. Other than that, they pretty much used celebrities straight-up. This series still has some golden moments, usually when making parodies of Hollywood schlockbusters. The phrase "buy my book" is also from this series. Jay writes a book and has a bunch of life size cardboard cutouts that look like him. They mechanically wave an arm while repeatedly saying "buy my book" in annoying repetition. If I remember correctly, it's a running gag for one episode.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  14:07, February 2, 2010 (UTC)

True Story: I was maybe 20 and a group of my friends went over to this guy's house to party one evening. Our host's parents were on vacation but he wanted to play it safe, so we were all gathered in the enclosed porch to the back yard. His sister had a few of her friends over. They stayed indoors and did nothing but complain about how "loud" we were. It was maybe 10 people and one boombox. I'll never forget briefly entering the house for some reason and overhearing the debutante sister and her friends exclaiming "My god, their listening to THE DOORS out there!!". Apparently, when one listens to the Doors music, satanic rituals and human sacrifice are soon to follow. It seemed like every 15-20 minutes, the sister would open the door from the house and whine about something. It was getting ridiculous. After whiny complaint #10, she closed the door and almost by instinct I exclaimed "Burn her, she's a bitch!". Within moments, the entire room was laughing uncontrollably and everyone started repeating the phrase, Python style. 1/2 hour later a San Jose cop walks right into the back yard and breaks up the party. We were very fortunate that nobody was smoking pot when he walked in or there would have been citations. So, little miss priss actually called the cops on her own house and her own brother to break up our little party. The next day at the local hang-out, this guys is blaming me for the party getting broken up. "Everyone was having a good time and you just had to go too far". Apparently, "Burn her she's a bitch" was the final straw but I'm smart enough to know that she was hell bent on getting rid of us from the very beginning. Just like the group behavior that had everyone laughing "burn her she's a bitch", the same group behavior had everyone looking to me as the scapegoat for this guy's family dysfunction. It was an interesting evening but I blame Monty Python for ruining my sense of humor and causing all my friends to laugh and diss Marie Antoinette.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  11:57, February 5, 2010 (UTC)
I think you should have filed grievances with the Python, as they've obviously caused you a lot of damage here. ~Jewriken.GIF 12:01, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

Camera Obscura[edit | edit source]

Hi Doc. Let me thank you now for the nom and vote for Anne Hathaway, appreciated. She lasted for two days as the feature, the cat has nine lives. You may enjoy this, one I've found on random search and put up for VFH. If I'm not mistaken you will appreciate the craftmanship and satire from this one-time 2007 user. Aleister in Chains 14:05 14 Feb. MMX

Left a note on the page. The satire is that cameras didn't exist in the 1600s, so here's a roving reporter/chronicler of the events, lugging around a camera obscura, setting it up in the battlefields and saving 500 images somehow. The academic chronicling of the collection. . .a masterpiece of satire, imnho. Since I'm here again, thanks once again for Anne. Al, later that day.
I saw. It's an OK article but the universal appeal is going to be minimal IMO. If there was only a way to put some more overt humor in it, then it would probably stand a good chance. When I read it, I did say to myself that this seemed to be far too early for any form of photography but that fact didn't get a chuckle. I really was expecting that when I finished reading the top and scrolled down the page to the pics that I was going to see some doctored photos which were going to be universally amusing - whether I "got it" or not. It's just all so dry and out of my idiom of intellectual humor. I honestly haven't gotten as much as a grin out of it. Sorry brah. --DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  19:40, February 15, 2010 (UTC)
Have put some funny into the text, one of which made me laugh as I typed it. So at least a little yucks, and tried to make them blend in with the academic language. Yeah, the page had dry humour and irony, guess I like that style. Each his own. Hey, took a quick glance/read of the highway patrol page, very good material. Prog Rock, etc.[edit | edit source]

Didn't know you were a fan; it's pretty darn cool that you are. I was just curious as to what sort of jokes you were expecting to see--as a young fuck who (aside from being first cello in high school orchestra) has no inclination of ever playing in a band, I wouldn't really know, not to mention the generational divide. I wouldn't mind changing/adding a thing or two if would improve the article, so yeah. Also, there was a fair amount of IP cruft in that article when you read it that I've since purged, so yeah. —Unführer Guildy Ritter von Guildensternenstein 22:36, February 21, 2010 (UTC)

I didn't want to criticize in great detail on the nom, I thought it would be overly dickish but it's true that my background makes this article non-enjoyable for me.
  1. Pink Floyd: The excessive Floyd references left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm a huge fan but The Wall and The Final Cut don't even count as prog in my book. The Floyd were great songwriters and very creative which made up for their lack of musicianship. Did you know: that Roger Waters was incapable of laying down the bass track on "One Of These Days" and needed Gilmour to do it for him? The biggest thing that makes Floyd a minor player in prog is the fact that they're so damn successful. When it comes to financial success, the poster child for progginess would be Yes and an album like Tormato or Going For The One; absolutely stunningly intricate music that is so far over the mainstream head that it completely fails from an economic standpoint. If there were a single band that deserved a crapload of references, it was Yes and not Floyd.
  2. ELP: These guys are another perfect poster child for prog rock (like Yes) that should be used for source jokes. Here's three guys who are incredibly talented virtuoso musicians who would normally be playing in the best symphony around but they're making music that people of that stature would normally scoff at. Did you know: that these guys actually tried to tour with an orchestra but had to abandon the idea halfway through the tour due to poor ticket sales. Now, that's prog rock!
  3. Roger Dean: You have to fit him in somewhere, perhaps a method of conjuring material - stare at Roger Dean paintings for a few hours while stoned for example.

So, there's a concept thing - the entire manner in which the subject is handled that leaves me unable to enjoy it because of my particularly narrow minded viewpoint. Now that's SO prog rock. --DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  12:53, February 22, 2010 (UTC)

Stare Deeply Into The Roger Dean Painting and fix that article!!!

It's totally prog to bring up Jean-Luc Ponty. He made Zappa proggier. It's tough to even call Frank proggy because he was his own genre really

OK, now I'm being totally pretentious by adding in this video because I happen to like Robert Calvert and old Hawkwind footage that includes Stacia and her huge, lovely tits despite having nothing to do with Calvert's solo projects.

Wowza. Got to say, some of that's a little before my time (being 19 and all), so yeah. I'm more a fan of the newer school of Prog music (which I'm guessing you probably don't like), stuff to the effect of Porcupine Tree, Opeth, The Mars Volta, Mastodon, Tool, etc. being the more mainstreamy ones, though I also like a lot of Post-Rock/Post-Metal (Goodspeed You! Black Emperor, Mogwai, Isis, etc.), and have even been known to digest some avant-garde stuff like maudlin of the Well, Kayo Dot, and basically anything else Toby Driver's involved with (guy's a friggin' genius if you ask me). UneXpect is also about as inaccessible, manic, and unmarketable as you can get, so naturally I dig them as well. Oh, and Pink Floyd and King Crimson, if you couldn't tell. I chose them to be the vanguards of that article mostly because A) everyone's heard of Floyd, and B) King Crimson, to most people at least, is about the epitome of the sort pretentious inaccessibility that is associated with Prog music. I basically tried to go the "inaccessible" route (Crimson) as opposed to the "unmarketable" route (Yes), so yeah. I guess I'm also entrenched in my own narrow-minded viewpoint, which means A) I'm also Prog, and B) I probably won't change anything. Though I do, however, appreciate your opinions anyway.
Now that we're on the subject of Prog Rock, wanna smoke up and talk about how much better we are than everyone else? —Unführer Guildy Ritter von Guildensternenstein 06:36, February 23, 2010 (UTC)

What Does "Progressive" look like on-stage?[edit | edit source]

Since progressive musicians don't prance around on stage (since they're awesome skills require full attention to their instrument) it's not uncommon to have extra people around to prance for you - which is very proggy. Hawkwind musicians typically aren't virtuoso, just like Pink Floyd but they still need full attention to their instruments anyway. --DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  15:21, February 22, 2010 (UTC)

So I was staring at that marvelous little bit of nan-ing by Modus' alleged sock and wondering how long it would take someone to finally fix it. I waited and waited....finally, I went in and fixed it only to get the edit conflict screen. This would be like, the second in an already towering list of articles of yours attacking humanity's only weapon of nature - art! Are you some sort of curator?? Wow, this is pretty helpful. I'm very glad this man died (er), the article mentions a "holy war", so the conspiracy could involve all the major religions covering up the big secret: that it's all... bollocks. He could resemble the bloke who is found dead in the Louvre (Eugène Delacroix bored him to death, I think) at the of the film book. How would the article manifest itself? An idea that appeals to me is that it could be stapled as a normal mainspace article, but the writing suggests it consists of evidence that a conspiracy theory is going on. --nldr 14:21, March 3, 2010 (UTC)
Hmmmmm, and how would the severed ear play into this as well. Stuff to think about. If I remember correctly, there already is some controversy over the real facts behind the ear story. I did read Holy Blood, Holy Grail though.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  14:30, March 3, 2010 (UTC)
I've read all but a smidgen of The Da Vinci Code, but I've seen both film adaptations (they're very funny lol). Dan Brown's writing skills has been a focal point of fun by some people, I remember I got sick of reading it anyway: "Only those with a keen eye would notice his 14-karat gold bishop's ring with purple amethyst, large diamonds, and hand-tooled mitre-crozier appliqué", a keen eye my arse. --nldr 14:54, March 3, 2010 (UTC)
You guys are forgetting the "hidden man" in Van Gogh's life, his brother Theo. This shadowly figure, his financier, had easy access to Van Gogh's inner thoughts and dreams, and not only had physical poccession of all of his paintings but had a wife who was sectetly tied into the Bavarian Illuminati and the Golden Dawn (that last part made up. . .maybe) 3-4 tildes 13:04 4 3 2mx

I've read the book, early on, and enjoyed it and the movie. One main thread that runs through it is the Sacred feminine, how the catholic church tried to destroy the old Goddess worshipers and subligate women for two thousand years. That was the books very redeeming factor. So in your book, maybe you can bring out the Sacred in some form, how artists subligated somethng or other. Comment fini 3-4 tildes :14 5.3.2mx

How about jugs? Yeah, the Sacred jugs. I love feeling them up. Let's do it. --nldr 01:29, March 5, 2010 (UTC)

Van Gogh Code Notes[edit | edit source]

PARIS-van-Gogh--39879.jpg
Van gogh cake.jpg
Vangoghtelegraaf.jpg

I'm thinking about being very loose with making the story just like the Da Vinci Code. All that really matters is tying the life and times of Van Gogh into a conspiracy theory with far reaching implications.

Elements[edit | edit source]

Severed Ear

Wanted to eavesdrop on potential Muslims. Cuts off ear - ritual bugging device of the time - supplanted in prossie's pocket.

Absinthe
Charles Baudelaire, Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Amedeo Modigliani, Vincent van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, Aleister Crowley, and Alfred Jarry were all notorious "bad men" of that day who were (or were thought to be) devotees of the Green Fairy
Chain Smoking

Contemporary Dead Van Gogh
Apparently the guy was a xenophobic right winger that wanted to curb immigration. Killed by Muslim extremists.

The note found on his body is assumed to have said "holy war" or just some quotes from the Koran. This calls for a zodiacologist-type protangonist (catchphrase? = "Quick! We need a library!"). Also sexy French peasant girl to fill in plot holes.

Cover-up - the grand secret

Da Vinci version: Jesus Christ was just an ordinary bloke who like lager and supported Spurs - fair enough. Courted controversy by the Catholic church - who are all Arsenal supporters. Van Gogh version? Well taking in mind of the chap who was murdered in 2004 and your suggestion that Vincent should actually be a right-winger, Muslim-hating, Jewry-bating militant, and if that turns out to be true, would this simply be following the Atheistic aesthetic? Everything is made up, etc.

Religion

The link reporting the death of the contemporary Van Gogh mentioned two religions (I remember anyway). A holy war in history so horrific, even Judaism and Islam were united.

Writing style

Effect just a few mixed metaphors. Too much of this joke and we have...

Clichés to avoid

Many jokes have been made before about this particular subject, which got tiring eventually (in 2006) - we need heavily to rely on what we can wrought from the fresh green grass of Vincent.

Probable clichés: (need to be tested perhaps) Dan Brown's writing skill, heavy references to the film (and not the book. we could avoid mentioning Tom Hanks, Ian McKellen perhaps - protagonist boasts different description), deliberately trying to confuse the reader (maybe), references to Da Vinci himself (best avoided),

What you said in Van Gogh Notes is exactly right. I think we should just try to apply the same principle used in The Da Vinci Code - without trying to make it the focus of attention - but apply it on Van Gogh. He's the star here. He's famous, he's done strange things, many works, erratic look, dead contemporary, etc. Plenty to work with IMO.

Hah! I beat you guys to it by a year. On a more serious note, that's probably the angle you might want to avoid. Though, who knows — maybe it'll get you going. Nice work. I think a little tweaks might come from eventual comments on the nom page (I see VFH as another form of pee review for almost-good enough articles). I found a great page that you might like, and for some reason the guy has the article on his userpage, so I left him a few notes on his talk page. It's User:Unregistered user. Maybe a hidden gem here, told in pics and one or two understandable words in the captions. I don't know if the article's language is real or just made-up. Al, much later in the day on the 10th
I was tripping on that myself. The language is "Cherokee"(?), that's what I got from a conversation in regards to the author dropping the top template on other pages. I get the idea and everything but I'd put in WAY more translation links and other forms of "universal language". It's definitely on its way.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  14:16, March 10, 2010 (UTC)

That's a tasty hot dog!!

Ok, good start. Bets on how long the pic lasts, Vegas odds are over/under one hour. Al de' Chain 14:36 13 3 mmx

I was wondering about that. Opti seems to be CSS-ing it through wikipedia. I have a backup plan. I can always alter one of the many Vilks pencil sketches available. The whole concept of the article needs to be reigned in and tightened up a little but we have a start.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  14:38, March 13, 2010 (UTC)
