Kind of an American-centered question, but should Letterman have apologized to Palin? Bringing you up to speed, Letterman made fun of Palin and her daughter Bristol, the slutty one, who had been at a baseball game. "Interesting development, in the 7th inning, Palin's daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez." After a LOT of arguing, Letterman apologized to Palin. Palin, while accepting his apology, kind of bitch slapped him at the same time. Was Letterman's joke funny in the first place? Would apologizing lead to more conservatives demanding that liberals stop making jokes? Just an open question to the Uncyc crowd.   Le Cejak <20:29 Jun 16, 2009>

The joke wasn't all that funny, but was somewhat humorous. I lult a bit. And who really cares if conservatives demand apologies for things? Here on Zerb IV, the political machine hunts and violently recycles those of the comedy caste, so no matter how it works on Earth, count yourselves lucky. Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 21:16, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
The problem was really that Letterman got it wrong on which of Palin's daughters was there. He thought Bristol (the 18 year-old with the baby) was there, but it was actually her 14-year old daughter that was there. I think that sometimes we kind of forget that people in the media are just real people. If it were me, I would probably want to stand up for, and protect, my daughter, regardless of age. The joke wasn't all that great in the first place, really. But I like Dave. I'm not going to say that he was wrong. It was an honest mistake, and Palin used it to get herself back in the news. Whether or not he should have appologised, I understand that he probably felt bad for the whole squabble. But, at the same time, I would hope that Dave puts it behind him in the same way that he put Paris Hilton no-showing for one show behind him: Get a little pissed, and continue making jokes about it. I find that he does some of his best jokes when in that mode. Woody On Fire! Wood burning.gifTalking Woody Stalking Woody 21:24, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Dexter's take

First off, he was clearly joking. Secondly, he apologized the next day - before Palin went on a media rampage demanding an apology - but Sarah Palin and the right-wing media didn't seem to catch it. Thirdly, instead of just being an angry mother, Sarah Palin tried to turn it into a whole sexism issue. Fourthly, who cares?! David Letterman is good for laughs in between commercials of whatever is on [adult swim] and shouldn't be taken seriously when he's clearly cracking jokes. Crock of Crap

Of course David Letterman should not have had to apologize. And I believe that he probably did so after being pressured by his corporate bosses, who in turn were getting heat from Palin and her conservative idiot fans. Sensing where the wind was blowing, I mocked that whole tempest in a teapot with this article: UnNews:Letterman arrested for rape

My point in it was only that Palin was making a big stink for little more reason than being able to be in the news spotlight again. That dim bulb loser (and I speak as a former resident of Alaska) was bounced up far beyond her ability through the powers that be deciding that McCain was not to win. McCain new this, everyone else recognized it, only Palin thinks that she has some kind of insight and intelligence needful to be in the top rank of our nation's leadership.

Like the scamming real estate contractors in "The Fountainhead" who picked Howard Roark to deliberately fail, so was Palin picked to deliberately fail. The dumb bunny still doesn't know this obvious fact.

As a Christian Anarchist, I usually deliberately refrain from following elections, but it was hard not to be concerned over the cataclysimically low intelligence of Palin. Hell, she made George W. look erudite. Heck, it was almost tempting to vote, but it was too obvious that the fix for Obama was already in for me to truly worry.

I resent her for forcing poor Letterman - who has enough problems in this time slot - to apologize for making a routine joke about an issue that was well known. The woman has a slut for a daughter, and should worry more about that than what David may be saying.

--Clemens177 01:44, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

If you would not like something to suceed, and had the power, you would pick someone that you knew - or thought you knew - was incompetent. That's what some developers did in that book, though it turned out they were wrong about him. So what you're telling me is that politicians tried to not be in power.
On a Randian note, an actual quote from an actual character in the actual The Fountainhead, by the greatest and specialest and smartest and strongest author ever, Ayn Rand;

"You're special, Howard Roark. You're special and you're strong and people hate you for that. People hate you because you're special and smart and they want you to fail. They want you to fail because they're dumb and average and dull and they're jealous of how special and smart and strong and special you are and they want you to fail, Howard Roark, because you're special and..."

Hey folks, sorry to be the guy who gives it away, but the Republicans and Democrats are pretty much the same. You pay more taxes and have less freedom for socialism or fascism, but you pay more taxes and have less freedom all the same. Georgie boy was way over the top fascistic, so to balance things we needed a dippy socialist - that he was a minority was a twofer. Having McCain pick Palin was an easy choice for the GOP, not for wishing to be in the 21st century, but wishing to look pro-woman when they knew that they'd never win.

Had the GOP been trying, they'd have had some other republican, and not paired that one with a dipshit hockey mom who sounds like a refugee from "Fargo" with a prefontal lobotomy and thorazine habit. -- Clemens177 08:50, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

McCain won the nomination because he we was "more or less tolerable" to the largest section of the party. Also, he was the darling of the mainstream media in 2008. Giuliani was far too liberal to win, and Romney was a former-liberal flip-flopper. Or in the words of Huckabee, he "didn't hit political puberty in the conservative ranks until 60 years old." Thompson was even more elderly (in behavior, if not in years) and tired than McCain, and he was probably just there to divide the conservative vote. Huckabee came across as too conservative/redneck for the eastern establishment.
And, at one point, McCain was ahead of Obama in the polls before the recession hit. And, the election was not a landslide (52.9 to 45.7). All things considered, McCain actually did quite well, and in hind site, any Republican would have lost. Its probably better for the conservatives that the GOP nominated a moderate in that election, so the failure can't be blamed on the candidate being too far to the right. --Mn-z 16:36, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
And the election was still close even after eight years of incompetently malevolent kleptocracy (and another twenty years of dismantling and privatizing the State, thanks to the Reagan revolution, followed by Bush Sr's "Li'l Reaganism" and Clinton's "New Democrats"). Economic conservatives, I don't mind, it's the NeoCons, moral conservatives and corporatists (yes, including a bunch of the Democrats) that rub my craw the wrong way. If there's one thing I hate, it's an incorrectly rubbed craw.
Also, watching the McCain of pre-2000 turn into the McCain of 2008 made me sad (almost as much as watching Powell pitch the "evidence" during the runup to the war). Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 16:50, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
It's been proven the USA doesn't need a government to function. I say this because after President James Garfield was shot in 1881, the nation went a full two months without a President (as James Garfield was bed-ridden and couldn't do anything; then the bastard died, anyway), the Supreme Court, or Congress (The Supreme Court and Congress were all out on vacation - the lazy bastards.). The Vice President was out hunting the whole time. But hey, the nation functioned just fine. Who says it everything would collapse if we were to just overthrow the government today?! ANARCHISM FOR THE WIN!!! No? Nobody? Come on! It'd be fun! We have candy! Fine, I'll shut up... Since nobody wants to overthrow the government with me.... "A little bit" is a delightful understatement. For 2008 he hired the same campaign-managing, muck-raking, rumour-seeding thugs who savaged him in 2000 (remember his "brown baby"?). I think its more those in the center and on the center-left thought that McCain was more moderate than he actually was. His senate seat was previously occupied by Barry Goldwater. Any change is more political posturing than anything else. The only difference was that in 2008, he needed to present himself as acceptable to the right. And, in 2000, it was in his best interest to try to be as "civil" as possible, less so in 2008. And the mainstream media was on his side in 2000. --Mn-z 18:02, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Woody was better before he went commercial. Oh, and a presidency by McCain would be WAY worse than under Obama.
