~ James Rolfe on Hong Kong 97

“This game is better than all my creations.”

~ God on Hong Kong 97

“I can't stop playing.”

~ Some random kid on Hong Kong 97

Hong Kong 97 is a 1995 MMORPG released on the SNES. The game was designed by the famed game developer, Yoshihisa "Kowloon" Kurosawa, who is widely praised as the Miyamoto of China. According to Kurosawa, the game took several years to develop, due to the NES and SNES not being able to handle its superiority. As a result, Hong Kong 97 has been universally praised as "the one game way better than the crap people call modern games." Once released, all copies sold out, causing HappySoft to sadly stop production of the masterpiece due to the exorbitant licensing fees for all the franchises included in the game.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Gameplay when Xiaoping is reborn as the ultimate weapon.

The tutorial level takes place in Hong Kong during early 1997. This level is dedicated to teaching players the basic controls, and sets them on their first quest: to kill all 1.2 billion Communists living in the People's Republic of China. The default character is Chin, a distant relative of Bruce Lee who has assumed the latter's combat skills.

Once the tutorial is complete, the player will select one of six servers, and they will be able to customize their avatar and interact with other players. The players can then follow the main quest, in which the player can either stop the Chinese government scientists from transforming the deceased Deng Xiaoping into the ultimate weapon or follow over a thousand sub-quests to beat the game.

If the player chooses to kill all 1.2 billion Communists, therefore beating the game on vanilla, then Xiaoping will be reincarnated. Following that, the player will have to kill Xiaoping in unique ways. Players also have a wide variety of mini-games to play with each other. These include Chess, Solitaire, Monopoly, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The bad ending...

The game is set in the year 1997, when Deng Xiaoping dies of lung cancer. As a result, the government of China then starts a secret project to resurrect him into an ultimate weapon so they can take over the world with Communism. The player then must stop the Chinese government. However, China is inaccessible until the player defeats the eight robot masters, beats a robot at Chess, saves animals from an evil scientist, saves a princess, finds some spheres, and blows up the Moon. Once these criteria are met China will be accessible. However, by the time the player is ready, it is too late, as Deng Xiaoping has already been transformed into the ultimate weapon. Deng Xiaoping then betrays his creators and almost kills everyone on earth. However, the player then defeats Deng Xiaoping and saves the world.

If the player fails in any way during this quest, they'll get the bad ending unless they have completed every side quest in the game. Once every side quest has been completed, the player can then battle Deng Xiaoping again. After Deng Xiaoping is defeated, Mao Zedong shows up as the true final boss. Mao has 100 phases, each one lasting for about 2 hours, and all of his attacks one-shot the player even at max health and max armor. Nobody has ever beaten Mao, so nobody knows the true ending to the game.
