This is no voting for anything. It's just a petition to have Uncyclomedia projects liberated from Wikia for ever. Read the text from my letter carefully and say if you agree or not. No one is compulsory to agree, but the more people who agree, the merrier it is to convince Wikia Inc. Please keep the discussion serious.

I hope many of you will support this. This is very important if we don't want to have Wikia involved in our projects ever again. Thank you | Cartoonist | You're nuts? Don't worry... Me too! | 12:58, June 24, 2010 (UTC)
This is an official letter from UnMeta to Wikia.

Dear Wikia Staff,

Since 2006 Uncyclomedia.org has assisted the Uncyclopedia-concept in multilingual coordination, it has served as a central wiki to request adoptions and creations of new languages. Sadly, Uncyclopedia moved to Wikia, but Wikia abused (and still does) the concept by giving people the opportunity to create new languages and by commercialising the concept. That was no part of the deal. The umbrella organisation is Uncyclomedia (often abbreviated as UnMeta), Wikia stole Uncyclomedia’s role for its commercial purposes. Also, Wikia just took over Uncyclopedia’s domain name .org. As Wikia is commercial, the company has no right to use such domains. Unfortunately, indeed, many wikis moved to Wikia and new languages were created on it. Many people got very angry about this injustice against Uncyclomedia and some Uncyclomedia users started up Complaintwiki.org, where they posted their complaints about Wikia. I refer to the license Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 2.5 Generic, that the work may not be used for commercial purposes. The ‘work’ also includes de concept itself, so Wikia is not even allowed to create new languages.

I, CartoonistHenning, have had very bad experiences with Wikia.com, according to the fact that I made a lot of efforts to let close some copied Uncyclopedias/Illogicopedias in other languages. The Uncyclopedia-concept is meant to be a Wikipedia parody, which also includes the freedom of ads (non-commercial), the freedom of users (bureaucrats cannot do on their wiki what they want to do) and the default skin (no Monaco). On page two of this letter I explain why Wikia Inc. never deserved the acquisition of the Uncyclopedia-concept.

Therefor we postulate that the abandoned Uncyclopedias in other languages on Wikia will be removed and that Wikia will no more accept new Uncyclopedias in other languages. Wikia should no more be involved with the Uncyclopedia-concept in other languages, except the wikis that asked for a move and that are active on Wikia. The same goes for another non-commercialised project, like the Illogicopedia-group, which will not be afflicted by Wikia anymore, despite the rude copy which is today called Wackypedia. To make sure that this requirement is confirmed by Uncyclomedia users - who share the same opinion -, people can read this document too and tell in a forum if they agree, like a petition.

Sincerely,

Henning VD, CartoonistHenning

-- page 2 --

Reasons and arguments why Wikia does not care about a project concept, but only (ab)uses projects to make money out of them and the people. §1. The agreement concerning the hosting is unilaterally enforced:
Once people want to make a new language of the Uncyclopedia-concept, for instance, (ignorant of the truth about the fact that Uncyclomedia is the real hosting) they make a domain for free on Wikia, but they do not realise that A: they commercialise the name of (the) Uncyclopedia(-concept); B: if they do not want to have the Uncyclopedia-version on Wikia anymore, they are planning to move, or they start realising Wikia commercialises the concept in a unfair way, it is too late to start over again. Wikia let projects never go and (ab)uses the Wikia wiki as a direct competition, kept by Wikia users who requested the adoption for the wiki. The content of the abandoned wiki will remain, so Wikia does not give people the freedom in what they do. Users should read a kind of manual before creating a wiki on Wikia. But no, the green inviting button above each wiki “create a new wiki” leads you directly to the creation scheme, without any warnings. C: they even have never heard about the Uncyclomedia Foundation, because Wikia is so predominant in Google, that they didn’t find any information about the real organisation. This is actually all about selling your soul to the devil: once in Wikia, never out.
§2. Wikia is playing a game with people when they talk about the ‘community’:
“Our community wants you; we are happy to see you joining our community...” and nonsense. This horse manure is a typical trick to attract people to Wikia. The company claims that you and your early community will be safe with your Uncyclopedia-version and you and your community can decide everything on your project. In fact, Wikia means with ‘community’ something totally different than you expected: the community is the team of janitors and staff members who control you, your wiki and your community to lead everything like ‘they’ want to. A clear example is the complaint according to a fight between User:D. G. Neree and User:Manticore about home rules on the creator’s wiki, a complaint which can be found on Complaintwiki.org. Janitors and staff members just come over to your wiki and do inappropriate edits. Administrators are chosen in the understanding that they know the wiki’s general policy very well, but these janitors and staff members do not seem to worry about that wiki’s policy. They have their own rules, haven’t they? It appears that Wikia has a goal to become the largest communistic society on planet Earth, as they claim to love a big and grand community of hard working people, but actually gain money on these volunteers, who eventually have nothing as compensation (except irritating ads, no freedom in ruling their wiki like they want, etc...). Maybe you can interpret ‘community’ in two different ways, as following: - a large group of volunteers that is oppressed by the company, to make as much money out of them as Wikia can. You will join this ‘community’ and be a small part of the commercial company yourself, without receiving any compensation for it. That is why Wikia wants you. - Wikia itself, which includes the staff, the janitors and everyone who gets paid for the volunteer’s work. The ‘community’ decides? Certainly not: the staff members and janitors do!
§3. Wikia has no respect for the Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 2.5 Generic license:
I will not explain it over and over again. The license does not allow to use/copy non-profit organisations for commercial purposes. Wikia Inc. is commercial. Obviously, Wikia is a very crafty business.

Do you agree with the text?

If you have signed this petition before on Ikkepedia, Desciclopedia, Oncyclopedia or Illogicopedia, please don't sign it here. Each user on Wikia can sign here. If you don't agree, please don't answer this. The petition will close July, 8.

  • Indeed, if Wikia is going to engage in overly-aggressive attempts to market itself to wikis with perfectly-good existing non-Wikia servers, they should leave the name of the English-language Uncyclopedia out of this. A pitch that "you should turn over project ownership of your language's uncyclopedia to Wikia because en: and a few others already have" is highly misleading as the en.uncyclopedia.org domain name being sold out from under us was something done by one individual (not a sole founder, as Uncyclopedia has multiple founders) in secret and without the consent of anyone else in this community. --Carlb 15:41, June 26, 2010 (UTC)
As we keep saying, just about nobody here cares that wikia owns the uncyclopedia domain name. Nor does anyone here (except you) care about Chronarion's original decision to sell the domain name. So what if wikia markets itself with the uncyclopedia name? Personally I couldn't give a damn providing they keep the ads on here to a minimum and don't make me work down the mine again. Go home now, as we are all running out of polite ways to tell you that. --ChiefjusticePS2 15:52, June 26, 2010 (UTC)
There is no way that you can make this claim, I know from my discussions that a great number of people are more than concerned about the Wikia situation from the moment Chron made his decision through to now. Please do not make the assumption that because you don't care nobody else does. -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb.png (talk to me)

No community, no total power by the administators here, and the functions on top of them. We dó have that power. We have the freedom to do with our wiki what we want. Wikia still keeps the power, says that there comes a community, what is not totally right, but on top of that the Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 2.5 copyright thingus is in violence because Wikia ís a commercial company with the ads who come also with. But, what i said, was also to read in the long text that CartoonistHenning already has written. R7 (NL) 19:55, June 24, 2010 (UTC)

The wording of the license is "4c. Restrictions - You may not exercise any of the rights granted to You in Section 3 above in any manner that is primarily intended for or directed toward commercial advantage or private monetary compensation...". While that brings the nebulous question of intent into the definition (and determining primary motive beyond a reasonable doubt is like trying to nail gelatin to a tree) the inevitable reality is that anything which is not "...primarily intended for or directed toward commercial advantage or private monetary compensation..." would be unsaleable to investors. Uncyclopedia (when originally launched as an independent) had no outside for-profit investors to appease and likely was not intended to do anything more than break even or operate at a slight loss. The same is not true of any Wikia-owned entity, or of anything else where outside venture capitalists are in control; they want their money back with interest, and that's their only interest in the project. Nature of the beast. This and the non-commercial CC-BY-NC-SA license cannot be reconciled; there's more hope of oil and water successfully mixing (something BP has been working on for months now...). CC-BY-NC content should not be here. --Carlb 04:07, June 25, 2010 (UTC)

You know

Amongst this whole "I hate haet hat Wikia" tirade, one thing does arise... Why don't we reign in a few of the foreign language wikis? Take the simple English Uncyclopedia for example. The person as the crat there has never even edited here. I do believe Uncyclpedians need to have more say as to the ongoings of the various foreign wikis, since this is the main Uncyclopedia. Another thing I've noticed is that the user databases aren't synced up, requiring someone to create their username on every single foreign Unyclopedia. One should easily see the potential for abuse because of this.

In short, who wants to go fuck up the foreign wikis with me? MegaPleb Dexter111344 Complain here 23:38, June 24, 2010 (UTC)

As the second-largest member of the Desciclopédia® family, we are in no position to claim that "this is the main Uncyclopedia". Nonetheless, I am concerned that the issue of en: content being crossposted (as-is or in translation) to other wikis under an incompatible license has remained unresolved since mid-2005 (if that's when the original request to create fr:Désencyclopédie was rejected by Wikia because of their unwillingness that it be created under an Uncyclopedia-compatible non-commercial license). I have more than 10,000 edits here (which used to be a large number back in the days when en: was still the largest Uncyclopedia) and do not appreciate being turned into an unwilling, unpaid employee of some for-profit enterprise through my non-commercial contributions to the original en: being reposted under commercial licences for-profit in some other language. A translation of a copyrighted work is still subject to the original copyright; the same is true of the hundreds of pages which were dumped from Babel: namespaces to individual wikis over the years. As for the separate userlists? That's a question that had been raised repeatedly on en: (as our separate userlist had long been something that Wikia was seeking to take away from us) and there has traditionally been very little support for a system that renders names unavailable just because a similar name is in use on some other wiki with precious little or nothing to do with en.uncyclopedia. --Carlb 01:44, June 25, 2010 (UTC)
Let me poke a couple of holes in what you just said in regards to Desciclopedia being the main Uncyclopedia:
  1. Uncyclopedia is the original.
  2. Uncyclopedia has a much larger userbase and receives far more hits than Descic does.
  3. Uncyclopedia has true quality control meaning it won't ever see a massive jump in crap articles like Descic does quite often.
  4. ???
  5. PROPHET MOHAMMAD!!!
I'm not going to continue to respond to all the "Wikia is making a profit off of Uncyclopedia!!1!!lulz!!!" because it's just patented nonsense. You're either misinformed or just don't like Wikia if you say that. I'll let emc explain it again if wishes, but really... I'm sick of it.
Uncyclopedia can make money off of the work, but no one person here could pocket the funds made for it. All the money would have to go to improving the site, be that through advertising, buying our domain back, or other means. It's what allows us to sell merchandise (which no one is buying...) but still remain "non-profit." (I'd like to state here that we aren't "non-profit" but rather "not-for-profit", but that'd just distract from the points Carlb and Henning have tried making, so I won't.)
Finally, Wikia has never tried to take away our userlist. What I was suggesting was a combined userlist of all the Uncyclopedias. But because several Uncyclos are basically their own entities and want nothing to do with Wikia, that isn't going to happen. It's quite sad, but really it's not Wikia's fault. It's honestly the fault of a handful of foreign Uncyclopedias. However, I see no reason why you can't create a combined userlist for all the Uncyclopedias you host, Carl, though that may just be a big pain in the ass to do. If that's the case, then I'm fine with you not doing it. MegaPleb Dexter111344 Complain here 02:48, June 25, 2010 (UTC)
You mention "Uncyclopedia" and "quality control" in the same sentence? Isn't that as contradictory as juxtaposing "Wikipedia" with "a reliable, factual encyclopædia" in the same phrase? Certainly the situation in terms of deletionism (including that annoying "forest fire week") is very much comparable between Desciclopédia and its smaller English-language sibling (many newly-created pages don't last a day). As for total traffic, good luck obtaining any meaningful stats! It should be easy to account for most of the 25 megabits per second of constant bandwidth used by various non-Wikia wikis, even through they are scattered across multiple domains which include at least two spots (pedia.ws, uncyclopedia.info) amongst the top-20000 in Alexa rank. (Independents such as ko: and ko:meta: could also be estimated using Alexa or similar tools, but try to find a meaningful rank for our second-largest language? Oh sorry, I forgot, there's no easy source of publicly-available stats if you are somehow too unimportant to own your own domain.) If Wikia has the info, odds are much of it will be treated as commercial trade secret (and not to be released to you or other de-facto unpaid employees) in any case. A combined userlist for Uncyclopedias can't be done as far too many of them lack an independent userlist from Wikia; there are also plenty of obvious instances where a non-Wikia project (such as ko: or ja:) would not want a combined userlist as they're not even using the same alphabet as other wikis in the series. You may want to look back a few years in the archives (from around or just before user:Chronarion's selling the domain out from under us in July 2006) - it would make the "we do not want to be switched to a commercial license" and "we do not want to lose en:'s independent userlist" concepts a little clearer. Wikia attempted to sell us on both of these ideas and both went over like lead balloons.
As for the "several Uncyclos are basically their own entities" factor, it's not just a question of them being independent from Wikia. The individual entities value their relatively well-established independence from each other. Were this not so, perhaps now would be a good time to delete en:Main Page and paste something more important (like pt:futebol) in its place? After all, a brazillion fans take their soccer seriously! --Carlb 03:29, June 25, 2010 (UTC)
Site visits are hardly a trade secret. Clearly crushed Descic. I even have a more accurate hold of demographics to this site than Wikia does. :D And if Descis is finally getting on top of actually deleting crap articles, good for them. Hopefully they'll see a 1000+ article dip before the end of the year.
As far as the userlists are concerned, I'm just suggesting you compile the userlists of all of the Uncycs you host, unless they don't want to. Combining them with this sites userlist isn't hard. I'm sure I could dig up that one MediaWiki tool for one of the crats to use. However, I'm unsure of how it'd affect users like me who have created an account or two on the foreign wikis with the same name... So maybe the combined userlist for the Uncycs won't work. Oh well, I'm just throwing out ideas on how to make a joint community. MegaPleb Dexter111344 Complain here 03:46, June 25, 2010 (UTC)
Quantcast is clearly biased to measuring US audiences and US demographics, and even then favours those sites who have registered to use Quantcast over other sites. "As a courtesy, Quantcast provides 'rough' audience estimates for non-Quantified digital media properties. These rough estimates are just that - far from perfect. We strongly recommend non-Quantified publishers refine the accuracy of our reporting on their audience activity by joining the Quantcast Publisher program"[1]. Utterly worthless for any form of global comparison. --Carlb 04:00, June 25, 2010 (UTC)
Why you say it's biased toward measuring US audiences and demographics is beyond me. You're just pulling that out of your ass. Regardless, Quantcast most certainly is providing accurate US stats which alone crush the GLOBAL Descic ranking on Alexa. And really, you're twisting the wording on Quantcast to make it seem like it is inflating rankings. It isn't. It just can't provide as accurate rankings of sites not registered with it. Wikia isn't even registered with it, so your point is moot. Your dismissal of Quantcast is just utterly worthless. Somebody call a WAAAAAAAAAAAAAHMBULANCE!! Yes. Your point being? Larger sites have more in-depth info regardless what nation they're in? Good. Also, (quoting myself) "Quantcast most certainly is providing accurate US stats" which settles everything. We were debating which was bigger, Uncyc and Descic, right? Cause Uncyc is. "Oh well, I'm just throwing out ideas on how to make a joint community". Well, that is exactly what the different languages DON'T want. This petition is not about that. On the contrary: we want Wikia to stay away from the wikis that don't want anything to do with Wikia and stop their agressive marketing. What Uncyclopedia does is Uncyclopedia's concern. Wikia claims it is a community, but it's not. Yes, a powerless community under the power of wikia staff. Not a community as such. The only communities there are are the users on a specific site. 80.127.53.170 10:59, June 25, 2010 (UTC)
Why shut up? This is a very interesting discussion and I've learned a lot from it. Thanks you guys. CarlB,I'm going to ask a question on your talk page about an article which I would like to see translated and put on your wiki. You will be assimulated, resistance is futile. Or so I've heard. Aleister 11:52 25 6 MMX
The effort to "get hold of communities" goes well beyond blindly looking the other way while a random "someone" creates a wiki with a similar name to an existing non-Wikia project. There have been complaints from everyone from 백괴사전 (Korea) to Oncyclopedia (Netherlands) that Wikia staff had been aggressively approaching admins or even users on various projects, attempting to get them to leave independent hosting and turn ownership of the site and userlist over to Wikia. Evidently these are worded in such a way as to make it appear that Wikia is offering to "host" the site, not disclosing that Wikia's intent is to "own" domain name, user list, inbound links, project name and anything else over which it can gain control for commercial purposes. Not all take kindly to being asked to hand over the fruits of a community's hard labours for free in this manner, although to Wikia control of a site's web traffic is commercially valuable to the point where it has made backroom deals with individual founders on sites to buy domains for several tens of thousands of dollars. Uncyclopedia is neither the only case or the worst case; a look at the history of guildwiki and its now-disgraced guildwiki:user:gravewit is worth looking up as it's an eye-opener. GuildWiki was, like Uncyclopedia, built by many and protected by a non-commercial license. Worse yet, much of its early expansion was funded by donations from individual members of the community. The domains and database were sold out from under the community by one person, who then promptly left the project. Sound familiar? The contractual details: for a price in the upper five-figures, this one individual agrees to sell and turn over to Wikia the domain name, database and userlist and then delete all files from his servers. He is contractually prohibited from saying anything publicly about the deal or what has happened, with the exception of vague and general praise for Wikia. He is prohibited from starting another site on the same or similar topic for years to come. The contractual details are to be withheld from the community, while the names of every user who'd ever registered on the site are sold to Wikia as nothing more than a commercial commodities, so that Wikia can claim to advertisers "we have n registered users" with no regard to whether these users want anything to do with Wikia or its hijacking of their community.
The end result was a strongly-alienated community and a loss of most of the users to competing project wiki.guildwars.com; Wikia attempted to buy back the respect of the community by repaying some of the donated money, but at that point it was too late as the damage had been done. I only mention the incident because it explains much of what had gone wrong here in Uncyclopedia a few years ago; Germany used to be on its own domain (uncyclopedia.de), but inexplicably its founders shut it down and turned the domain and data over to Wikia. The move was presented as Wikia hosting the defeated master race out of the goodness of their hearts, but what happened next? The Germans turned over the database and images, then deleted the originals. The copy of the images as turned over to Wikia turned out to have been corrupted somehow, and the deletions meant that there was no recovery. Wikia staff then start popping up on other wikis in the series, asking that we try to dig up images to re-illustrate and re-Bild the German wiki. Other, stronger German-language projects such as Kamelopedia are meanwhile laughing their Aryan heads off at the mess that Wikia has made of their longtime rival - images missing, ads everywhere, formatting of many pages broken badly. It wouldn't take even the level of intelligence in an average Stupidedia page to see that something is wrong, but why did this happen? A look at the contracts Wikia was imposing on founders as they betrayed their communities is telling... the document requires that the original founder delete absolutely everything after handing everything from database to trademarks to domains over to Wikia. We have no idea what (if anything) was actually signed as the German document of surrender, but in retrospect something just doesn't look right. And yes, Stupidedia and Kamelopedia have long since left de.Uncyc in the dust. Perhaps there are advantages to being in the West, outside the wall and free... --Carlb 12:51, June 25, 2010 (UTC)

Any attempt to explain the history of the project before your belated stumbling in is only greeted with "tl;dr" and "wahmbulance", not with any effort to look through the archives, see how we got from being an independent non-commercially licensed project to being something to be controlled for the profit of outsiders in open defiance of the community on some key issues. Nope. Wrong there bud. I've been editing since early 2006 and registered August 2006. Wikia commercialises the project in a inappropriate manner. Read the letter carefully, otherways, you can't state clear arguments | Cartoonist | You're nuts? Don't worry... Me too! | 13:49, June 25, 2010 (UTC)
My arguments are quite clear. You know nothing about how a not-for-profit site works and are under the completely idiotic assumption that just because Uncyclopedia is hosted by Wikia it is being used to put money in the pockets of Wikia. It isn't. Until you realise that, you'll do nothing but babble. MegaPleb Dexter111344 Complain here 16:18, June 25, 2010 (UTC)
It's not a completely idiotic assumption. Wikia is accountable to investors, not to the online community of any individual project. The investors have no reason to condone or support the allocation of scarce resources to anything that is not intended to put money in the pockets of Wikia so that the original investment may be repaid at a substantial profit. That's what investors do; that's their job. Unfortunately, it is not compatible with the CC-BY-NC-SA, which precludes use of non-commercial licensed content "in any manner that is primarily intended for or directed toward commercial advantage or private monetary compensation". The original license is here if you'd care to examine it. --Carlb 04:39, June 26, 2010 (UTC)

If Wikia had succeeded in its plan, you would not have the ability to set up an Uncyclostore or anything of the sort on your own initiative. The only thing stopping Wikia from trademarking the name and preventing you from using it is the prior US existence of many things already named in the same manner (including various printed books which have nothing to do with us, published by large well-known companies on topics ranging from trivia to baseball). The only thing stopping Wikia from preventing you from using the puzzle potato was an eventual realisation by its creator, user:rcmurphy, that he would have to either eventually say "no" to Jimbo Wales' repeated attempts to get him to sell Wikia the design as a trademark or be seen by the community as forcing dozens of non-English Uncyclopedias (most of which were already using some variant of the puzzle potato) to abruptly change to another logo. (One contingency plan, which would have replaced the potato with an egg on many affected wikis, was fortunately never used.) Don't think for a minute that it's out of any compassion for you that Wikia has done anything other than demand a 100% share of any eventual "profits" for itself. Jimbo had gone as far as to ask me (outside public view) to sell the "uncyclopedia.info" name out from under various key projects which were already using it, including Japan and Taiwan (Chinese regular-script). I refused. Taiwan was a community on which Wikia had already turned its back at the time, as they were trying to commercialise a "wikiachina.cn" domain and a (less-used) zh.uncyclopedia.wikiachina.cn already existed with the intent of targeting the communist mainland (who now can't read this anyway, but please don't confuse Wikia with facts) --Carlb 13:16, June 25, 2010 (UTC)

For what should you support us? You should understand that Wikia is constantly approaching us to give our projects away. But Wikia can't copy us and use our project for its own commercial purposes. WIKIA = COMMERCIAL. Wikia should keep off our projects and we need your support to convince Wikia that they are WRONG. Also, the shop helps Wikia to commercialise it extra. How can you claim that "We're allowed to have a shop as long as the money goes back into the site, which it does" given that en.Uncyclopedia clearly owns no domains and no sites? Everything was sold out from under you in 2006, there's nothing independent for it to go back into. False advertising? --Carlb 14:35, June 25, 2010 (UTC)

It will also go to advertising, something that not-for-profits are more than allowed to do! Scary, right? That way the community can grow. Secondly, a long-term goal is to reacquire the domain or move the site to another domain (we've got hosting and everything worked out, actually...). And thirdly, the money is used like Ape already stated. Your whole rant of Wikia making money off of Uncyc is completely moot, as I stated after your first or second "essay on big, bad, scary, and smelly Wikia." MegaPleb Dexter111344 Complain here 16:18, June 25, 2010 (UTC)
You do realise that what you propose makes no sense? If you wanted to re-acquire the domain, wouldn't posting advertisements to direct traffic to that domain while it still belongs to outsiders merely make the domain suddenly more valuable to the outside entity, with the end result being that either they would be unwilling to sell at all or that any asking price will go up - way up - further and more hopelessly out of reach of the Uncyclopedia community. Move the site to another domain if you like, but buying ads to direct traffic to an address controlled by entities outside this project is counterproductive. --Carlb 05:22, June 26, 2010 (UTC)

I expected people would sign this petition for the Uncyclopedias in other languages's sake. Uncyclomedia doesn't want to hear from Wikia again. That's our goal. Don't worry... Me too! | 16:41, June 25, 2010 (UTC)
Yes. I know the truth. Wikia is a commercial company that hosts a not-for-profit site. It's far from unheard of. They make absolutely no money off of the site, though. You keep calling Wikia "communistic" then saying it's "commercial." You clearly know nothing of communism and needn't ever say that word again. And if you posted this because "Uncyclomedia" doesn't want to hear from Wikia again, then why not just say it to them? Oh wait, because you wanted to cause drama here for some confounded reason. You're making Wikia out to be a malicious entity. It isn't. MegaPleb Dexter111344 Complain here 16:49, June 25, 2010 (UTC)
Just shouting "commercial" in all caps over and over won't make us agree with you. We know Wikia is commercial. So what? I'm probably the most staunch anti-capitalist on this wiki, but a) you're not offering any alternative to being hosted by Wikia, other than being hosted on some desktop PC in a Canadian basement, and b) Wikia really isn't that obtrusive a commercial host. -- diseased Ape (rape) (Riot Porn) 16:59, June 25, 2010 (UTC)
I note a number of key misconceptions here. You appear to confuse the concept of "hosting" a wiki with that of taking ownership or control. When one pays for webserver space (or co-location space) at a datacentre, that normally does not mean that the datacentre takes control of domain name registrations, userlists, trademarks or anything else. They're merely providing Internet connectivity - much like a telco provides 'phone lines but does not meddle with the content of individual 'phone calls. If a client is dissatisfied with a commercial datacentre, they are free to remove their co-located equipment, put the same database and the same domains online from a competing provider's facility and continue operation of the site with a minimum of disruption. A proper commercial datacentre, after all, exists to host servers - not to take ownership of domains, projects or databases which operate from those servers.
Wikia doesn't follow this model. They own the domain name, they own the userlist, they do allow staff to interfere in questions of content and when a dissatisfied community goes elsewhere they can and will use all of this to operate in direct competition to the original project in its new home while removing information about the original community having moved elsewhere. A huge difference... and a quick whois check to see who owns the project should make the distinction a little clearer.
As for your suggestion of "being hosted on some desktop PC in a Canadian basement", you show a rather distressing naïvité when it comes to the cost of the "last mile" in telecommunications. For a site like desciclopédia.org/uncyclopedia.info, the numbers would look something like:
Bandwidth cost (based on colocation) to host at big-city datacentre: $25 for each megabit/second of bandwidth (95% percentile, servers in Toronto/Hamilton)
Bandwidth cost (based on colocation) to host the same sites at my local ISP: $0.80 for each gigabyte/month of bandwidth (servers here in Kingston ON CA)
Additional costs would apply based on amount of power and rack space used. Current list of deployed hardware is:
sophia.uncyclomedia.org 1U (Tyan Transport GT24) 2 x Opteron 2346HE (8 cores total) 4 x SATA HDD 16 Gb RAM
roberto.uncyclomedia.org 1U (Supermicro 813) 2 x Opteron 2346HE (8 cores total) 4 x SATA HDD 16 Gb RAM
oscar.uncyclomedia.org 1U (IBM x3455) 2 x Opteron 2220 (4 cores total) 2 x SATA HDD 8 Gb RAM
Current bandwidth consumption is 25Mbps (95% percentile) or 6 terabytes/month total across these three servers. Total initial hardware cost was over $5000. All of this hardware is running pretty much at the limits of its capacity in all or almost all dayparts, including what would be overnight locally.
How does the cost of bringing the Internet to the servers compare to the cost of bringing the servers to the Internet? No real comparison; night and day.
$25/Mbps x 25Mbps = $625/month (plus any charges for power or rack space) to host in the big-city datacentre 200 miles away (current configuration)
$0.80/Gb x 6000 gigabytes/month = $4800 (plus any charges for power or rack space) to host with my local ISP.
Demand that a 25 million bit per second data line be run directly to whomever owns the servers? If you need to ask what that costs, you can't afford it.
There's a reason why major datacentres are so often located in places like NYC, Toronto, Chicago or Texas. It's not that there's tons of cheap farmland laying vacant in downtown New York which needs to be put to use so that weeds don't blow onto adjacent pasture; it's that the cost of continuous, sustained bulk Internet bandwidth represents such a large fraction of the total cost of operating the sites that its wholesale price overshadows almost all other factors. Oh, and all Americans should already know that Canadian igloos don't have basements as it damages the permafrost layer. ;) --Carlb 05:07, June 26, 2010 (UTC)

Why was CartoonistHenning banned? He is trying to explain something. This is not about uncyclopedia and we're not trying to get you away from wikia. We are only trying to gain support, to stop wikia taking over domain names and concepts, whithout consent and even with explicit "no" from the communities involved. Why do you make it into a personal cock-fight? The wikis are not eachother's enemies. If you don't want to support the petition, fine. But why the abuse ande the banning? You are the ones that are creating a scenes, not the people that want Wikia to mind their own business. And if a normal discussion can't take place here, fine. Anyway, I guess it's clear how Dexter Uncyclopedia thinks about this. Guess you're happy working and spending your efforts for others for free, maybe hoping that one day you will be a Wikia janitor too? It's a shame though, I thought that the people here would be able to read better and at least support the wikis that want to stay clear of Wikia. We should have knowmn better to come here and ask for support. And about Hennings ban: if you people start swearing and cursing and making fun of people, willingly distort what people say and turn a request into BS, don't be surprised when people get angry. Trying to explain something? No. He was speaking in Dutch because he knows most here can't understand it. Rule 2 violation. Also, why not tell us why he huffed Manticore's userpage over on UnMeta? He lists "vanity" as the reason. That is nothing short of abuse of power, something you all accuse Wikia of doing. In fact, UnMeta has seemingly abused him for years. Something is seriously wrong there, not with Wikia.
And if you wanted a normal discussion, you wouldn't post a bunch of nonsense and repeatedly say fallacies. You all came here. You should have gone to Wikia if you had a problem, not us. It seems if you don't want Wikia to solicit you, why not just tell them so, or give them a photonic restraining order, or ban them? I don't understand the problem, although I've enjoyed the discussion, just tell them that no means no, and good-bye. The action will start here when a hint comes that wikia is planning on running ads within the copy itself. Until then, they fuck us and we fuck them, or blow us and we blow them, or something, but if they really start to screw us then you've seen nothing like a website scorned. That was extremely early in this debate which helped prove that they are simply calling Wikia evil for no reason at all. To quote, "If Wikia has the info, odds are much of it will be treated as commercial trade secret (and not to be released to you or other de-facto unpaid employees) in any case." That one little sentence sums up quite well the inaccuracies and paranoia they came here to spread. They simply came here, several other foreign wikis, ?pedia, and even on the FB page to propagate fear so we'd want to move under Carlb's control as he's tried to do in the past. And with that conclusion, I shall not respond to this lunacy again (unless I feel like it). MegaPleb Dexter111344 Complain here 18:34, June 25, 2010 (UTC)

That's why I need the support of this community, to sign this petition. Before I created this forum here, I sent the same letter in a Word document to Angela Beesley and Wikia's central mail. I didn't create the petition on Uncyclopedia only, but I did set it up on several wikis. By creating this petition, I wanted to give people (who are against Wikia) the opportunity to sign this. *epic sigh* Well, it's not happening. Nobody's signing it. This fight against Wikia is incredibly stupid for more reasons than I care to explain fully. But I'll give you a quick sampling of them: the Creative Commons license protects against someone charging to read one's work, not advertising, so everything's cool so long as your work is still free to read - making money off it doesn't factor in; the cross-wiki anti-Wikia brigade is tiring - if wikis want to break free from The Man or whatever the hell is trying to happen here, they will do it of their own accord, so stop posting these forums all over the place; and finally, if you want to move away from Wikia, just fucking do it already. There's nothing that says a wiki cannot copy another wiki so long as attribution is still given. If you really think another person's hosting is going to beat out a company's, then just do it. Prove all of us wrong. Until then, spamming wikis with your call to action accomplishes utterly nothing. Wikia doesn't have to listen to you. We don't have to listen to you. We don't even have to allow you to edit here. So begone, before you get banned.  Sir Skullthumper, MD (criticize  writings  critchat) 19:31 Jun 25, 2010

First, banning CartoonistHenning, he tries to say something but because of some fights what started to get up, and with our so called "hate" against Wikia the sphere here went into a "party" were people get banned because they are saying something, but it seems that people aren't understanding this and the same message has to be repeated. I think with calling nonsense like a coming "Waaaaaaaaaaaambulance", ";bt lt" (or something like that), "Góóóáááál" and maybe something more is for me a sign for weakness. Don't understand me wrong, a sign of "I don't want to listen!! Fuck you, get the fuck away, you whiney bitch, your idea, nobody cares!" for a thing that is proven, and then STILL saying that it is wrong?
How? How can that be possible? It is disgust, I think. Also, one thing that makes me angry is that template on the top of the page (I don't know who did it) that is telling that here comes whining. I tell you this: Thís is a reaction of a 6 year old kid who doesn't get what he wants. In place of finish this on a gentle way with just don't vote, leave the page where it is gone for with leaving a nice, calm and content-improving message, this happens and the up here also called weird senteces with the wambulance and weird other "words".
Here by the Oncyclopedia this petition leaved good, same als by the Norwegian, and also (I thought) by the Portugese, but then, here it has to fail because nowane wants to take notice from this and making people crazy and mad with personal attacks. You will think, "Roye-fucking-many-sevens, shut the fuck up!" but I have an idea that peace and a "normal" discussion can go to the hell here... seems.
What started with a friendly ask for a vote ended in a fight and a ban of the person who started it is a sign that there isn't a possibility to discuss something here on the gentle way without yelling to someone, call him a whiney bitch and up of that, that he isn't trolling at all! It lóóks like trolling, but because of the violent language (fuck and things...yeah, my English isn't great...) from the people who do it, that's because it looks like that we are all trolling. He means it good, we wants the pure justice, however we all know that Wikia has already taken over the Uncyclopedia, which is none of my business. People getting mad because people don't understand eachother and don't want to listen to eachother before there comes another fight. Sad.
Well, I hope you will understand this. Then, let I make to you one thing clear: This is pure a make you clear that Wikia is voilencing our original project, and that copyright thing, Attribution Non-commercial Share alike or something. Also that personal attacks, saying useless things are making no sense. Vote, or do not vote. This what is standing up here is the point, if you got critisism, do it nice. Yes I know, I am not an administrator here, I am just a useless user who tries to be wase, somehow. R7 (NL) 20:21, June 25, 2010 (UTC)
I mean it in a good way, not to piss anyone off. R7 (NL) 20:22, June 25, 2010 (UTC)

I put it there, want to know why? Because you lot have done nothing but whine since this forum was created. Generally we don't give a shit about your little petition and we care even less about you. This place is devoted to funny stuff, not to serious discussions about wikia and project goals, but to writing stuff that makes people laugh. This is not work, this is not funny and it is just a waste of time. Do something useful and write something funny rather than bitching about how we have responded in the forums or piss off because none of you are making me laugh. --ChiefjusticePS2 20:31, June 25, 2010 (UTC)

Eh

For what it's worth, one of my hobbies is providing free webhosting to projects that amuse me. Uncyclopedia(and it's variants) amuse me. So, assuming the bandwidth requirements aren't *too* atrocious(I get 3 Terabytes a month of transfer), feel free to hit me up, preferably in #uncyclopedia, because I don't follow the wiki, at all.     EugeneKay wuz here (whine thank)   20:17, Friday 25 June 2010

Time for a reality check

  1. Non-profits use for-profit web hosts all the time (nearly all web hosts are for-profit, derp.) All Wikia owns is our domain. They don't own the community and they don't own the logo. We have a lot of rights to further our non-profit status; Wikia doesn't restrict them at all. This is why we are able to receive donations, set up a shop, and advertise (the latter which we're still generating revenue for).
  2. Wikia makes no money off of our content. They make money off of the traffic that our content attracts. All of our content is in the public domain, and I've not yet heard one example of Wikia directly abusing our Creative Commons Licensed content for gains except the oversimplified statement, "WIKIA IS COMMERCIAL WIKIA IS COMMERCIAL LOLOLOL". Enough. Get your head out of your ass and understand how free web hosting works.
  3. We don't have problems with Wikia staff throwing their weight around on the English Uncyc, so I'm sorry to say that this complaint is unfounded here. It may be a different story on the other language sites, which we do support (like that issue on Inciclopedia where sannse deleted an article about that one guy nobody gives a shit about, for which there was a forum for but I can't be bothered to find it). Sannse has always provided justification for her actions, and Wikia has gone to bat for us numerous times. If there are issues with this on other sites, those issues need to be addressed there and not be blown into an enormous anti-Wikia sentiment. And as far as ads go, take a look around. Do you see any ads? I didn't think so. If we hosted ourselves, we'd absolutely have to have ads. The possibility of having ads one day is a negligible trade-off for being hosted freely by Wikia.
  4. I'm not sure who this Cartoon fellow is but I've arbitrarily decided that he sucks balls.

Amazingly enough

I agree with Dexter. Except for the profanities, I'm more elegant than that. I think Wikia has been quite OK with us for a very long period and it's time to let this whole "Wikia is evil" discussion rest. I'm also not sure what sparked this whole dramatic discussion from the Dutch side for as far as I know Oncyclopedia has been a non wikia site for a long time. ~Jewriken.GIF 22:06, June 25, 2010 (UTC)

I honestly just don't care

Despite what people said, I don't see the reason why people make a big deal in the first place. Its not like Wikia killed anyody or due anything that threaten our rights in our respected countries. So I think who make these a big deal should suck it up and be glad they're still get to do whatever they want without conflict with Wikia.

Plus, I don't give a rat's ass who we belong to. As long as I don't have topay for anything, unlike some sites, I'm quite happy with Uncyclopedia. I rather be optimistic and look at the bright side of things rather than being a fucking pessimist who criticizes facts that probaly nobody cares about. I think everybody here should have that kind of attitude I have towards things like Uncyclopedia.

And I totally support Cartoon's banning; if he is going to act like a big baby he shouldn't be here--Grue ApocalypseDirectorEye 4.gifWILLExplode 3.GIFYOU 333Talk IF YOU DARE 21:59, June 25, 2010 (UTC)

No, thanks. Randomly banning people simply because they express opinions with which you personally happen to disagree is not constructive, and is not helpful to the task of building an Uncyclopedia in any language. All that you will accomplish is to send a clear message that Uncyclopedia stopped being a fun place to be years ago, an embarrassment even in comparison to the worst of Wikipedia's love for pointless rules and bureaucracy. --Carlb 04:39, June 26, 2010 (UTC)

If you're going to do that, I shall have to ask that this thread be closed and archived as well. It was created solely as a personal attack on one of the Oncyclopedia admins and serves no useful purpose here. It only serves as a distraction to the original, narrow topic of discussion - which was that Wikia's repeated attempts to harass admins and users of individual non-Wikia projects by bombarding them with endless requests that they turn over ownership of those projects to Wikia "because en: and some of the others are already hosted there" is not doing Uncyclopedia any favours. If Wikia wants to go cross-wiki with overly-aggressive sales pitches like these, could we please simply ask that they leave the name of en: Uncyclopedia out of this? Keep our name out of this, basically! If and when they do so, that may be be a good time to ask to close this thread... but even then any such request should be addressed to both sides or not made at all. There's an issue of neutrality and simply banning anyone who expresses opinion with which you disagree while ignoring personal attacks like "I've also put some of your articles on VFD before. That's what all those red links are on your page. I'm thinking of rewriting everything you've ever made just to spite you now." does not reflect well upon the project. If you intend to shut down the discussions, shut them all down - selectively closing this while leaving an attack thread against another wiki's admins open is not going to accomplish anything other than dividing the community and making the en.uncyclopedia project look like an unpleasant and unfriendly place that prospective users may wish to consider avoiding if they were looking for smiles. --Carlb 14:20, June 26, 2010 (UTC)

One message from her sister Uncyclopedia of Galicia

Non saben como se fala as cousas en galego? É sinxelo parece portugués máis é diferente... (Do not know how things spoken in Galician? It seems simple Portuguese else is different.)

Gentlemen, if someone does not know me I'm a sockpuppet here on this site but the performance of bureaucrats in charge of my Uncyclopedia origin. I understand that you'd prefer to stay at Wikia. But I wish to give my testimony here in this forum. I created Desgalipedia, your version of Uncyclopedia in Galician language. This language is spoken by a minority in Spain. Following the example of vernacular versions of other countries. But I did not know the application in Wikia.

And that meant there was always the interconnection of the external links Desgalipedia with all other project Wikia however ignored my calls for 2 months. Interlinks two months trying to make sending messages, emails and was ignored by the vainly Wikia team that even accepting my project is not granted the privilege. You want proof try to edit [[gl :]] at some of its articles. See how much I overlooked in my calls. Only solved this problem looking at Carlb in UnMeta which was very pleasing.

Wikia personally do not care about our communities and do not know if they still preserve the memory that your wiki was built without consultation with its users, or a unilateral decision who do not appeal to many of you. Imposes its determinations with little or no discussion about it in subject and not even consulted. Yes I noticed how wonderful your skin has changed... without purpose but I also noticed in other communities where they have not been warned.

I do not wish to be as offended as others from the Netherlands were also unpleasant demonstrate my thinking on Wikia. An entity that seeks only to profit from advertisements and determinations that go over the same goal that all Uncyclopedia have in common... Humor

Dear Uncyclopedians this is the first time that I participate in a formal forum to defend the rights of our brothers in design, so I say farewell to the accomplishment of a service for a mere sockpuppet began two years but as a user community already four years will be large.
