Forum:Pop-Out Nicknames
So... I'm calling out to all you shits with the pop-out nicknames... They're really bloody annoying OK?... generally you find that your last sentence has resulted in your signature just clipping itself off the end of the page, so that when you over the mouse over the expander... - Sorry to take this conversation back to non-BHOP levels, but I think I know what causes the free epilepsy test on some of the expanding sigs. It's if there's no space in the sig, it does it, but if anybody bothered to just leave a space in their sig, it'll just wrap onto the next line. –—Hv (talk) 19:24, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

12 px
Since we're all here bitching about sigs: We've still got a bunch of people breaking lines by going over 12px, generally using and tags. Personally, I'd like to hold us to at least the 12px rule.
In general, is it time we set some fairly hard & fast rules about sigs? Spang's above scares the hell out of me when I think of the possibilities... 05/6 19:31

I like famine's rules, except maybe the length one, I could live with them being a little longer than 30 characters. Maybe 50 maximum. It'd be like a PATRIOT act for sigs, giving us the power to contain sigs that are a threat to uncyclopedia. Not that we can't do that anyway, but we get to have an act. - Eh, I generically picked 30 because it looked a little longer than my sig, which I feel is a bit long as it is. I have no real attachment to that number. And it's not like we can't be fascist dictators and change it later if need be. The real issue is how we measure length. If we do it by character, we run into the fact that many fonts sizes depend on what character is used. For example:
- AAA
- III
- ---
- XXX
- How do those look to people? Are they the same size? On my screen, they are in the edit window, but when rendered in the default page font, they definitely are not the same size.
- How about: If your entire expanded sig+images+timestamp is longer than the line below, it's too long.
- XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
- Will that work? Or is it browser/font dependent? That's 55 Xs, for those who are curious.
- 05/8 21:25
- Shouldn't we be using M's technically? Since this is teh intarwebs and all. X is so Medieval. Em is the wave for the future! Observe:

Now that I'm back from an impromptu vacation, here are my long-tardy replies:
- Brad - I'd say that your sig clearly identifies you - nobody else has a
boogeralchemical cross as an icon. Should someone else come along and try that, we break out the hot iron and thumb screws. And as long as you're not changing it on a weekly basis, I'd say it fits the bill. Now, if it looked like this , I'd say that it didn't clearly identify you. - NeedABrain - it might be slightly more than 12px, but it's close enough that we'd never really notice unless you pointed it out. Now fix it before I ban you. Dumbass... :)
There aren't too many sigs that I've seen here which are way out of line. There are a couple which contain some name completely unrelated to the user, and a few who have either gone far overboard with the and tags, or which lack the class to avoid spamming in every conceivable award and rank. But by and large I'd say that 95% of sigs already pass this test.
Why put this in place then? Because every month that passes we get more people, and the sooner we clamp down on these...distractions, for lack of a better word, the less angry users we have to pacify. I don't really relish fighting battles with 50 users with sigs like Spang's above. It's like sterilizing your child, instead of disciplining their children when they prove incapable of it themselves. 05/14 21:44
To specify image height you can use (width)x(height)px. I don't know if there's a way to specify only height, but you can just set the width limit to a high number and let the image be constrained by the vertical dimension specification. Per esempio, just set sig images to 100x12px.
—rc (t) 22:13, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
- Now tell me where do you get this precise 12px measure? See the lorem ipsum test above. It's a square (20x20px) image, currently resized to 18px - I can make it shorter, but I really don't see why the 12px limit when it still fits the line height with a little more pixels - without making the image entirely unrecognizable. Anyhow, I'm not rebelling - you tell me and, if we didn't reach an agreement, I will have to change the picture because the 12px version is unadmissible. -- herr doktor needsAscalpel [scream!] 23:32, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, I wasn't saying you need to change yours necessarily - I was just using your image as an example to show how to constrain images to specific heights. I don't see that yours is causing any formatting problems. —rc (t) 23:47, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
- I tested with several sizes. The gap at the bottom line persists even with 12px, so it's not the picture what's causing it, probably just the timestamp. Okay, if everybody agrees, I'm reverting to the previous version. -- herr doktor needsAscalpel [scream!] 23:50, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

As long as it's just a guide that we can wheel out when people are annoying us, it's probably for the best. So long as it doesn't use its powers for evil. After all, with great power comes great... umm, power cuts? Big wall-sockets? I dunno. -- Whhhy?Whut? How? *Back from the dead* 23:23, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
