Best Article

I want to preface my judging by saying that there were a ton of really good articles--kind of glad I decided to judge instead of enter this time around, because my chances of actually winning would have been slim with all the good content submitted. Additionally, I was going to do mini pee reviews for each article in question, but there's no fucking way I'm going to have time for that this weekend. (If you want me to do a pee review of anything, though, just ask, and I'll be happy to oblige.) Instead, I've just decided to write little comments next to my selections so no one's in the dark as to why I made the decisions I did.

    • 1. User:DrStrange/HowTo:Be A College DJ I used to know a girl who did college DJ stuff, actually, so I can attest to the factual accuracy of this article. This is well written, paced well, "informative", and strong conceptually. The fact that technical knowledge or prior experience is eschewed in favor of doing more "important" things like developing an on-air persona and conforming to a certain archetype I found really funny. Good stuff.
    • 2. User:Black flamingo11/Arecibo Message It was a close call between this and DrStrange's piece for the top spot. Again, this is well written, well paced, and probably the most conceptually strong piece of the category. The images are great too.
    • 3. User:Scofield/UnScripts:The Golden Compass A shitload of work went into this, and it's formatted beautifully. Everything's really heavy-handed on the humor end of things, though, plus the boat to make fun of The Golden Compass sailed like six years ago, so it isn't exactly timely.
    • 4. User:Acrolo/How To: Milk a cow A really funny article--I especially liked all the footnotes--but it's definitely a one-note effort, plus making fun of rural people has definitely been done before.
    • 5. User:Nikau/Indiana Jones and the Typical University-level Dig This is both funny and conceptually great, but the execution and format is a bit all over the place. It's one part UnScript and one part regular article--I think picking a direction and sticking to it would have worked a lot better. Still funny, though.

Unführer Guildy Ritter von Guildensternenstein 16:43, October 7, 2011 (UTC)

I want to preface this by saying more or less exactly what Guildy said. Unfortunately, I'm late for a...thing right now, so I'll post my comments on the articles when I get back later tonight, but I figured I should put my rankings up here now since I'm cutting close to the deadline as it is. Good work to all the participants, it was an excellent competition, and I was at least mildly amused by every one article. The four complete articles that didn't make my list were funny as well, but I can only pick five (anyone can feel free to request a pee review of their article from me in future), so here we are:

    • 1. User:Black flamingo11/Arecibo Message - This was just very well done, as I've come to expect from Black flamingo. I particularly like how it takes a rather esoteric topic and properly explains it without detracting from the humor. That can be rather difficult to do, but didn't seem to be a problem here. Very nice work.
    • 2. User:Nikau/Indiana Jones and the Typical University-level Dig - Guildy more or less summed up my qualms with this article. It seems to have a little bit of trouble deciding exactly what it is, or exactly what it's parodying. I've ranked it number two, however, because when it's on the correct path I found it to be the funniest of all of the entrants, properly blending satire with ridiculousness, as well as a vague semblance of a story. It's also nice to see an article "about" a movie that doesn't derail into blatant criticism of the series or genre.
    • 3. User:Acrolo/How To: Milk a cow - This is just very funny. Unfortunately I have no idea what South Africans sound like so I just read the whole thing in a Swedish accent, but it was still pretty funny. It's a slippery slope, this one. I really don't think that anything needs to be changed with it, but in keeping it in the right tone, it just doesn't have any moments of brilliant hilarity. It's a very well-rounded article, in contrast to the one above, which has hilarious parts and non-hilarious parts. This one is amusing throughout. The extreme use of references is nice as well. Altogether I think it's a featurable article, but just not the funniest in the competition.
    • 4. User:DrStrange/HowTo:Be A College DJ - A keen observer would notice that I have a tough time judging DrStrange's particular brand of humor. On the one hand, I'm not a big fan of topical/stereotype humor, and this article pretty much describes college radio in a way I've heard it described in many humorous publications and excursions in the past. There are bits where it dares to almost step into uncharted territory, but it stays pretty well rooted in reality for the most part, which isn't necessarily a problem, but doesn't grab my interest all that intently. On the other hand, it's very well-done, on point, satirical, well-illustrated, and quite honestly funny.
    • 5. User:Frosty/WIP/Ernest Rutherford - This article tends to veer around a bit, and I'm not really sure what its sole purpose actually is. However, the concepts that are there are funny to me. The individual ideas serve their own individual purposes very well, it's just that there isn't a unifying theme or purpose of the article that pulls it all together. Still rather funny and well-constructed.

-RAHB 06:03, October 12, 2011 (UTC)

I pretty much procrastinated and left this all for now, so i'll just breeze by this quickly and add the comments as soon as possible.

Best Noob Article

  • So...5 points go to participant A. I liked the non existant words contrasting against the non existant background. It was sheer genius to have no clear form or content leaving the reader both puzzled and entertained. While an image would have been nice, your revolutionary and risky non-use of image paid off. My only complaint is that I didn't laugh. Maybe the other judges did. 5 point.
  • 4 points go to participant Q. Your article seems to be an exact copy of participant A's article though there also seems to be something different about that. This made me laugh but in a bad way. I think you should keep the article on your userspace until you have polished the article more. Four points
  • 3 points go to participant DD. I don't particularly like you as a writer nor as an uncyclopedian, and so I am arbitrarily placing you in 3rd place. Sorry. 3 points.
  • 2 points for participant Y. Its too bad you didn't finish the article, more is less. You can turn nothing into something all together better than what you have now if you do it well. Consider a pee review for more ideas and inspiration, Frosty does some pretty good ones. 2 points.
  • 1 point for participant U. The whole things is bad. Terribly bad. I have never experienced something as bad as this. I want to take out a marker and write bad 1,000 times all over your article and then all over your face. I had to go to the bathroom three times during the whole nightmarish experience of judging your article. If I was an admin I would ban you for 50 years or until your death, which ever is longer. Stick to ban patrol and stop entering competitions. 1 point.

  • So anyway, looks like Writey's Three strike law is the winning article here. Well done, man, even if it was just because you were the only one who entered... doesn't make it not a good article. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy.png 19:28, 5 October 2011

Best Illustrated

I've done some reviewing here: User:Monika/pls11. I wanted to give the authors time to respond to my critiques before I assign places, but I got backed up and now there's not a lot of time. Anyway, if you want to, respond on the talk page of the aforementioned page.

The biggest problem with the PLS is the quick deadline. This is especially true of the illustrated category. All of the articles here were rushed, and they suffered for it.

1. This page does not exist First place goes to a hypothetical article that is well written, well illustrated, and complete.

2. User:RAHB/Timothy Leary's Psychedelic Bed And Breakfast Second place goes to the article that has the greatest concept, the best writing, and the best ideas for the images. It's incomplete and needs work, but it has potential, and I expect the writer to fix it up and help it reach that potential. (I don't like that I have to rank these based on their potential, but there's not a lot more to go on.)

I really struggled with this decision, and even considered giving each of these two articles 2.5 points in a tie for 3.5th place.

3. User:HauntedUndies/UnBooks:Uecil, the "special" apple This article feels rushed and the author owned up to it. There's potential here but the author needs to sit down and decide what the joke is going to be. With the exception of the aliasing problems and some issues caused by attempting to make it look a book, the images go well with the article and are in fact integral to the article (and not just because all the text is in the images, which is the wrong way to do it).

(Also, I'm too tired to look for it now, but I know there are at least a couple of examples of unbooks that tell children's stories but do it on one page and do not attempt to make the page look like a book. If anyone knows what I'm talking about and gets here before I do, post it.)

4. User:DrStrange/UnNews:Lingerie Football a big hit in America but draws the ire of PETA and NOW There is potential in this article too, but I know for a fact that it's not going to reach it because the author stated plainly "there's absolutely nothing being changed in this article". Maybe the author was having a bad day and will come to his senses when he realizes that now that there is no time limit and no article lockage, that he can take the time to polish the article. But as it is, I wouldn't consider it feature-worthy or even very good. It was rushed and phoned in and the author has indicated that he doesn't see why he should fix it. If he wants to write it off, then it will be written off.

Have fun being the judge that gets to make the decisions, Matt.

. Also UnBooks:See Dick does the kid's book thing. Going through extra lengths to make things look extra bookish with pages and stuff is a recent trend. --Littleboyonly.jpg TKFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFUJewriken.GIFCK Oldmanonly.jpg 06:00, October 13, 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for finding things so I don't have to :) UnBooks:S Is For Syd is a really pretty example of how to do the children's book with an image on every page, but it is unnecessarily spread out over several pages. UnBooks:Mr Happy's Bible Primer is not as pretty, but shows how to do an entire book on one page. --monika 06:12, October 13, 2011 (UTC)

I'm a late replacement, so in the interest of fairness and by respect for the authors, I'll certainly break the time limit a tad to make a somewhat clever choice. Talk Mattsnow 03:08, October 13, 2011 (UTC)

  1. User:HauntedUndies/UnBooks:Uecil, the "special" apple In my opinion, this article is the one that is responding in a clear way to the category it's in. I reckon the text of some other articles in this category are superior, but Hauntedundies has won the Holy Grail for me here. I am not a formatting genius to say the least and that article won my heart. If I could be so blunt as to make a little criticism, the pic on page 3 leaves A LOT to be desired, while the others are very relevant.
  2. User:DrStrange/UnNews:Lingerie Football a big hit in America but draws the ire of PETA and NOW If I had to judge on text alone, this one would have taken the cake. I laughed all the way through. "this pastime has raised a bit more than just eyebrows" LMAO this is genius, as all the prose in the article is. But this is an image contest mainly, and though the pictures supported the incredible text, I find myself puzzled as to why the first pic wasn't larger given the nature of the competition. It was a close call between first and second, but ultimately, the concept of the competition prevailed.
  3. User:RAHB/Timothy Leary's Psychedelic Bed And Breakfast This has the look of an incredible article start, though the pictures are not included in the article, and this is what this section of the competition is all about. I know you will be manufacturing something great with that awesome start. Go ahead, RAHB!
  4. User:Zombiebaron/wip/UnBooks:Zombiebaron's Adventure Home From Asia What can I say? Sometimes, life is taking us elsewhere on its unpredictable flow, and though I will certainly enjoy the 3rd chapter one day, for now it has no pics... and it is non-existant.

I'd just like to interject that I've given this a great deal of thought, it was quite hard to place the articles but I do think that Imrealized's entry was justifiably the "winner" in my eyes. Not only a well crafted article but also a great improvement on the original article. 4th: User:Black_flamingo11/Deviled eggs
5th: User:EpicAwesomeness/Side effects
Winner: User:Imrealized/Apathy Man (rewrite) - I laughed non-stop through this entire article. One of the best I've read so far. Great idea and implementation. Everything about this had me rolling around on the floor in laughter, that is until I rolled out my front door and into an inconvenietly positioned pot plant.
Second: User:Xamralco/Spongebob Squarepants - A great article, well written, formatted and funny to boot. Definitely feature worthy in my opinion. Unfortunately, a giant wave of apathy overcame me during voting time.
Third: User:Black_flamingo11/Deviled eggs - Only a bee's dick behind second, this was another great feature worthy job, but I suppose there has to be a third; shameful, shameful third.
Fourth: User:Frosty/WIP/HowTo:Become a sysop in 2008 or later‎‎ - A great deal of work went into this so kudos to frosty but it's up against some high quality opposition here. I personally felt it was a little too informative and there's still a lot of room to inject some funny. It also smells of unrequited sys-op desire which is a bit of a turn off. Perhaps a different tone or approach could nulify this, nice work though.
Fifth: N/A - The rest of the article's seemed unfinished to me so scoring these would be a kick in the balls to those that put the effort into finshing theirs but let me know if I'm wrong and you could be the proud new owner of one whole point.

Tie breaker judges

These judges will be called upon in the event that the judges are such prissy girls as to be unable to provide a clear winner for any category. Think of them as the Power Rangers crossed with a couple of lazy fuckers.
