Uncyclopedia:Untato

"This potato is the symbol of Uncyclopedia. It signifies mental softness and dead Irishmen."

The Untato (also called Sophia for reasons only the Ancients know), is the resident mascot and patron deity of Uncyclopedia. The Untato is a potato, in the hermeneutic sense rather than the literal one, as a literal potato would start to stink really bad and make the browsing experience on the wiki pretty unpleasant. The Untato is also a puzzle potato, as it exists as a hyperreal simulacra of the Wikipedia puzzle globe, a copy of a copy, the inverse of a parody, removed from all representation besides its own. In the words of Baudrillard:

Human beings in a mob. What's a mob to a king? What's a king to a God? What's a God to a non-believer? Skrrt!

The design of the Untato is likely based on the Russet Burbank cultivar.

Origins[edit source]

All those who may have once known the origins of the Untato are either dead, inactive, or sworn to secrecy. Some say it might be a riff on The Onion, but that is mere speculation at this point. Others say it is a reference to the homeland of another Uncyclopedia mascot, Oscar Wilde, Irish playwright and certified homosexual.[1]

The Untato has become the defining visual symbol for Uncyclopedia as a brand, a symbol for oppenness and collaboration; thus, no one can be said to own the Untato, it is owned by all mankind.[2]

On the nature of Sophia[edit source]

The Untato is often called Sophia, after the Gnostic deity of Wisdom. Sophia is also frequently represented as the Italian actress Sophia Loren, known for her love of carbs. It is unknown whether Sophia (within the context of Uncyclopedia) is a modalist deity who takes different forms, or is entirely separate from the Untato, with the Untato merely being named in her honor. The Untato is often referred to using female pronouns, not unlike the way ships are called "She" and "Her."

A Brief History of the Untato[edit source]

The following is a condensed version of the history of the Untato as it exists on this site, minus holiday iterations and other minor changes.[3]

Section notes
  1. The first puzzle potato design ("v1") was originally created by Rcmurphy. A fringe group of Uncyclopedia scholars believe he may have signed his work with the initalism "RCM", although this theory has been ridiculed by mainstream loreheads, who believe Rcmurphy was a fictional composite of several mythological figures.
  2. The second puzzle potato design ("v1.5") was created by Lyrithya, current site operator and MediaWiki mandated girlboss. The design itself remains mostly unchanged, although the colors have been greatly desaturated, a characteristic of redesigns of that era.
  3. The third puzzle potato design ("v2") was a complete retool, again created by Lyrithya. It was initially created in 2013, although the logo itself was not used until 2018.
  4. The fourth puzzle potato design ("v2.1") was introduced in this forum vote. Note the flatter design, a reflection of what Paul Skallas calls Refinement Culture, a tendency for modern redesigns of logos to be simpler and flatter then their predecessors[4].
  5. This fifth puzzle potato design ("v2.2"), from this forum vote, reintroduces the drop shadow.

What Each Puzzle Piece Represents[edit source]

Uncyclopedia scholars cannot with complete certainty confirm the meaning of every puzzle piece in the Untato, but these are the symbols in which there is general agreement.

Current Untato[edit source]

Symbol Image Potential Meaning
Dead Cat Puzzle potato cat.png Thought to be a reference to Stephen Hawking ran over my cat, Schrödinger's cat or—less likely—Murphy's law application for antigravitatory cats, although it is missing toast.
Puzzle potato wheelchair.png While resembling a man in a wheelchair, this is in fact a symbol of a man with a giant, bodacious booty. Whose badonkadonk? We may never know...
Puzzle potato phurba.png Tibetan punctuation mark which looks vaguely like a crown, used in Lyrithya's signature (current site operator). Basically a tramp stamp of ownership.
?CM Puzzle potato rcm.png One theory posits that the ?CM symbol is meant to be an "RCM", a reference to Rcmurphy (the original designer of the Untato), although this theory has come under fire from Uncyclo-scholars adhering to the "ECM" school of thought, who deride it as a fringe conspiracy theory that threatens their tenure.

According to the ECM'ers, the symbol is an abbreviation for a currently unknown phrase, although likely candidates are "Evil Cum Machine", "Eager Cock Muncher", or "Every Chicken Matters." A common misconception is that the symbol is meant to be a reference to EMC, although the letters M and C are clearly in the wrong place.

U Puzzle potato u.png What do you thinK?
Ю Puzzle potato u cyrillic.png The Cyrillic letter Ю (pronounced "Yu"). It is absolutely not a modified Omega symbol (Ω) and therefore a veiled reference to the Omegaverse.[5]
Puzzle potato shekel.png The currency symbol for the Israeli Shekel (₪), a reference to the fact that the site is actually a front for Mossad.
و Puzzle potato arabic u.png The arabic letter waw (و) which can function as a vowel with the ū sound, (like "oo" in "mood"). Alternatively, a symbolic representation of a defective, lopsided sperm, the kind most Uncyclopedia users are made from.

Past Untato[edit source]

Symbol Image Potential Meaning
$ Puzzle potato moneysign.png A reference to MoneySign, in the Mythopoeic sense: so many people, including MoneySign himself, have claimed the dollar symbol is a reference to him, that that belief has become fact regardless of its truth.
??? or RCM Puzzle potato old rcm.png Most Uncyclopedia loreheads believe this is meant to represent a lovely layer cake, although a small fringe group believe this is a reference to Rcmurphy, who originally designed and uploaded the first version of the Untato.

Footnotes[edit source]

  1. If you didn't know, the Irish are most known for eating potatoes, and dying from not eating them, although some claim they may have also contributed to science and literature at one point.
  2. The same cannot be said for the name "Uncyclopedia", which (according to U.S. copyright law) is owned by a guy named Carl. There but for the grace of Carl we go...
  3. Note that this history section applies only to this wiki, located at https://en.uncyclopedia.co. We consider other so-called English-language "Uncyclopedias" to be schismatic heretics and buttboys of Yaldabaoth.

  5. To quote Wikipedia, "Omegas are often envisaged as being able to become pregnant via a uterus connected to the rectum, and Alphas can impregnate regardless of their main gender. To make penetration and impregnation easier, male Omegas often have self-lubricating anuses."
