Ive Deformed Babel:Nl/Duidelijke Nederlandse. It's a dutch text. Where did it come from? Where does it go from here?--D. G. Neree 23:40, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Deformed? Or reformed? :) Duidelijke Nederlandse was written by an anonymous user and placed in the English-language section by mistake. I'd moved it to Babel:Nl. As the page itself appears to be fixed now, I've removed any templates complaining about the name or format of the page. --Carlb 00:13, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
It's now at http://onziclo.pedie.info/wiki/Duidelijke_Nederlandse in the Nederlands uncyclopedia, Onziclopedie. --Carlb 11:11, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
Chinese Uncyclopedia
I know you started Chinese Uncyclopedia (China, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong Combined version 2), but why must of you treated Chinese Language as one unitifed language with unitifed culture? Currently, I fight for three independent Chinese Language Uncyclopedias, instead of any unitifed Chinese Uncyclopedia.
If you ready want to give Babel:Zh-hant articles a new home, please close all of the "zh", "cn", "tw", "sg" and "hk" variants at Chinese Uncyclopedia (China, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong Combined version 2), and change the default language of it from "Chinese" (4 names used to describe it: "zh", "zh-cn", "zh-sg" or "zh-hans") to "Traditional Chinese" (3 names used to describe it: "zh-tw", "zh-hk" or "zh-hant").
If you do not want to give a new home to Babel:Zh-hant articles, there is already a Chinese Uncyclopedia (China, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong Combined version 1) - a nearly "death" wiki, just moved them there and then delete the Babel:Zh-hant articles.
--Hant 09:41, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
- I've set it to "zh-tw" in LocalSettings.php and the extra tabs seem to have gone away. The intention was not to create a second, redundant "combined version". The images and the MediaWiki: space messages do still need to be uploaded to .info, though. --Carlb 14:10, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
How to let http://zh.uncyclopedia.info/wiki/特殊:Allpages have the arrows showed in for example http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Special:Allpages/Albert_Speer , which identified the redirect links? It is good for admins! Also, how to add a "Babel" on left hand side "navigation"?--Hant 13:32, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
- MediaWiki:Sidebar contains the left-hand 'navigation' boxes. You can put whatever links you like in there. MediaWiki:Common.css contains the code to display the arrows for the redirect links. --Carlb 14:02, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
Where I can get the
[edit=sysop:move=sysop] [edit=autoconfirmed:move=autoconfirmed]
options of protection level back? Sometime, semi-protection which blocked unloged-in user to edit is enough to stop vandalism.
Also, why does "$1" always appear, as "Editing $1"? Where I change it back to normal?--Hant 13:14, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
- I'm seeing:
- Editing 首頁
- From 偽基百科 Jump to: navigation, search
- Note: This page has been locked so that only registered users can edit it.
- Most of these messages are in the MediaWiki: space so that admins are free to change them. 特殊:Allmessages or Special:Allmessages will give the full list of MediaWiki: messages. --Carlb 13:47, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
I saw "Editing $1 MediaWiki:Talk" at the top. Does "$1" in it has meaning? I also saw
數據庫錯誤 From 偽基百科 Jump to: navigation, search 數據庫指令語法錯誤。這可能是由於非法搜索指令所引起的(見$5), 也可能是由於軟件自身的錯誤所引起。最後一次數據庫指令是:
(SQL query hidden)
來自於函數 "LinksUpdate::getExistingInterlangs"。 MySQL返回錯誤 "1146: Table 'carlb_wikidbzh.langlinks' doesn't exist (localhost)"。
--Hant 14:29, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
The $1 in this MediaWiki: message indicates where the name of the page being edited should appear. Some versions of MediaWiki want it there, some would be best to have it removed. The langlinks table is something that was added in the latest version of MediaWiki 1.7 which was not in the old version. That message could have appeared briefly when switching versions but is now fixed. --Carlb 15:24, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
I discover a problem, when users like me (another user Judgehou also have this problem), who set the preference of language into "zh-tw", it showed English, but when set to "zh-hk", it was normal (showed Traditional Chinese, and no "$1" showed, like "Editing $1"). It just did not work on the default language "zh-tw". What's wrong? Can you reset the default language "zh-tw" back to normal?--Hant 17:15, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
- If you have any messages in the MediaWiki: space which are written in some language other than zh-tw: you may want to delete them (which will cause the default to be used) or edit them. Special:Allmessages will show unchanged messages in blue and changed ones in red/green (red being the original defaults). From there, you can edit or remove the offending pages. --Carlb 19:31, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
- The redirect do not work! Can you fix it?
- Why I set up a new namspace (with talk page also) in "namespace management", but it did not showed in recentchange "namspace selection box"?
- Why the names showed in "namspace selection box" different from these I set in "namespace management"?--Hant 16:49, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
The three problems above seem to be solved. Thank You!
Is there a place I can label categories as "top level categories", so that they would not be listed in "Uncategorized categories" when I did not put them under another categories?
Also, can you change the language name "中文(繁體)" to "中文(正體)". "正體中文" is used in Traditional Chinese Uncyclopedia official long name 偽基百科(正體中文).
I know you are busy, but if you answer me, I can pickup the wiki faster.--Hant 23:44, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
I've set zh-tw: to be named "中文(正體)" on *.uncyclopedia.info; to remove the top-level categories from the uncategorised list, add them all as subcategories of one main category (such as "index" 索引 or "everything" 一切) and then make *that* category either:
- a subcategory of itself
- a subcategory of one of its own subcategories - in other words, an endless loop.
Otherwise, at least one category will appear as "uncategorised". --Carlb 00:13, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
I suggest to change the following language names on *.uncyclopedia.info:
- zh.cn from "中文(简体)" to "中文(简化字)" ("简化字" is the official name of "简体" in People's Republic of China);
- zh.hk from "中文(繁體)" to "中文(香港)" ("hk" means "香港");
- zh.sg from "中文(简体)" to "中文(新加坡)" ("sg" means "新加坡").
Please consider.--Hant 02:00, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
Thank You!
What do the "local" and "trans" mean in interwiki table? Is it within uncyclopedia.info means "local" and outside like "uncyclopedia.org" means "trans"? Or have other meanings?--Hant 16:03, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
These bits don't seem very important, local would presumbably be within uncyclopedia.info and trans isn't being used for much at the moment, see m:Interwiki_table.
Why the "talk" page cannot go back to the article by click on the "article" tab on top? It just go back to the "talk"! What wrong?--Hant 17:00, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
This was what happened when I tried to delete the namespace "香港語":
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: clone() in /home/carlb/public_html/uncyclopedia/w/includes/SpecialNamespaces.php on line 732
What's wrong?--Hant 16:31, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
- It seems to be working now. Looks like clone() is a function which is built-in on PHP5 but which doesn't exist on PHP4. Special:Namespaces is the only part of the code which uses that function. Adding require_once('includes/Php4Compat.php'); to the config file solved the problem. --Carlb 02:46, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Of course, once this is switched to the new dedicated server (hopefully end of this week?) the Php4Compat.php will be removed as unneeded. The new machine will be preconfigured with the current Fedora distribution, which includes PHP5. --Carlb 18:29, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Why now I have no more power to manage the namespaces of "zh.uncylopedia.info"? What is the userright "bot"? Why the right of "interwiki" disappear in the userright option? Is the wiki software changed?--Hant 14:54, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
The Special:Interwiki and Special:Namespaces information currently can be changed by sysops and bureaucrats on zh-tw: The namespace manager which we had been using was part of the "wikidata" branch of MediaWiki 1.6; it was originally announced as something which was supposed to be included as part of the standard MediaWiki 1.7 package but was never released in that form.
We are now on MediaWiki 1.8alpha, the current version in use on the various Wikipedia projects. That version appears not to work with the old "wikidata" MediaWiki 1.6 namespace manager, so a page similar to Special:Interwiki is in place on uncyclomedia.org for use as a Special:Namespaces editor on whichever wikis have the new MediaWiki 1.8alpha installed. This would include cs: meta: fi: hu: nl: pt: zh-tw: at the moment.
I do still intend to change this to a proper namespace editor once I have the chance to modify the old SpecialNamespaces.php code.
The permission levels are:
- autoconfirmed - any registered user, able to edit semi-protected pages
- sysop - able to block/unblock users and protect/unprotect pages, import pages, edit special:interwiki and special:namespaces
- bureaucrat - able to create new sysops
- bot - able to edit pages without those edits appearing by default on special:recentchanges - they are displayed if 'show bots' is selected. This is normally assigned to users of programmes like pywikipediabot (sourceforge) that automatically edit large numbers of pages, making minor changes to each.
- interwiki - able to edit the special:interwiki table - this access is currently already given to all sysops and bureaucrats on zh-tw: --Carlb 15:27, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

You're the First UnNotable Person Interview!
We'll see how well this works. I'll go ahead and try posting this here, and if that doesn't work, we might just schedule an IRC session, er somethin'...
- What does it feel like to be the most notable person at Uncyclopedia?
- Dunno! I'm not even close to being most notable here. I didn't found Uncyclopedia or invent the puzzle potato or write a stack of featured articles. I've made plenty of edits, but many of those have been for very mundane purposes, such as tagging categories onto thousands of articles which needed them.
- So, how have you managed to be so active, yet so invisible?
- Much of what I've been doing really isn't exciting enough to need to be highly visible. Moving one-and-a-half thousand Zork pages out of the main space into Game:? That's the sort of boring task a robot could do - nobody cares - but deleting en masse all of the useless redirects left behind by such a move fills recentchanges very rapidly indeed.
- Is your obscene contributions list the result of some hack of Uncyclopedia's servers?
- Obscene contributions? Me? I'm pure and innocent... and that page on Backdoor Bitches Vol 1 is about, uh, cute puppy dogs... yeah, that's the ticket. We're a respectable, scholarly encyclopædia and I wouldn't ever even think of writing obscenities. No, not me...
- What was Uncyclopedia like back when you started?
- Just over a year ago? Pretty much anything goes. Of the six thousand or so articles in one language, some were clever, funny and original and some were just useless substubs. "This article is a stub. Its author has been smoking crack (or croaking smack)..." or "This page is crap. The author acknowledges this." A lot of cleaning-up needed to be done.
- What are your most favorite and least favorite changes from those early days?
- Hard to say... we now supposedly have wikis in twenty-one languages, varying in size from eighteen thousand pages down to basically zero. The standards for keeping a page in the English-language Uncyclopedia have been tightened significantly and thousands of bans have been handed out, sometimes a little too readily. Compared to the early days (in which Undictionary was turned into a dumping ground for every useless stub that no one wanted to delete), the pendulum has swung rather far the other way. In some ways, it's good to see the unfunny one-liners gone, in others it seems that maybe we've gone too far. Let's save the bannination for vandalism and malicious activity, instead of using it without warning the moment anyone posts BBBBBBBBB! again.
- What contribution to Uncyclopedia are you most proud of?
- My personal favourites? Most likely the stuff on Hurricane Katrina (various pages scattered amidst the wreckage), not because any of it was quite featured-article material (it wasn´t) but because it steps a little too close for comfort to the truth. From failing to build a usable evacuation plan to building foundations for floodwalls only ten feet deep in marginal-quality soil to deliberately turning away much-needed supplies and private disaster aid, every level of government bungled every aspect of this from start to finish. If open ridicule of what happened forces all to learn from the deadly blunders that were made, instead of dismissing all of this chaos as an 'act of God', hopefully there is an incentive not to repeat the same mistakes? Satire and ridicule can be effective tools in exposing not only apathy but outright incompetence at times - something to be taken seriously.
- Do you have any funny Uncyclopedia-related stories that most Uncyclopedians don't know?
- Not really, as the nature of wiki is that everything takes place out in the open. Any incident, whether it be trying to pick up the pieces after hosting a 2000-page wiki on an unstable home computer, watching Taiwan assert its independence from China in the pages of Uncyclopædia Babel: or even one of the admins suddenly and inexplicably transforming himself into a robot, it's all out in the open. For better or worse.
- Are there any questions I totally should have asked, but didn't?
- The name of my psychiatrist? I'm a nutter, I am. I have to be...
Party on, dude.--<<>> 04:36, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

Redirect of zh uncyclopedia don't work since system update.please fix it,Thanks.Judgehou 04:10, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
- The #REDIRECT pages seem to be displaying the redirect instead of automatically going to the destination page? This seems to be happening on the new dedicated server but only on MediaWiki 1.7alpha; a few wikis (such as commons.uncyclomedia.org) which are on the same server with the newer MediaWiki 1.8alpha look fine. I shall need to find a replacement for Special:Namespaces (which is in one old, unreleased version of MediaWiki but not present in 1.8alpha) before switching zh-tw: to the new version of MediaWiki. At that point, the redirects should start behaving normally, (as they are now on commons: pt: and a few others on the same server). --Carlb 16:40, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
- The zh-tw: and pt: sites are now on MediaWiki 1.8alpha and appear to be redirecting properly. 03:19, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Portuguese Uncyclopedia
Apparently, filetype .png was removed from the allowed extensions list of the wiki, preventing us from uploading files of those type (and changing Wiki.png). Can you change it back? Thank you. --Morgaelin 18:45, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
- Currently .png is one of the standard allowed filetypes (I also manually added .ico to the list yesterday). For some reason, .png images still aren't being displayed as proper thumbnails because the file type is being mistaken for "text/plain 0x0 pixels" instead of "image/png". You can upload Wiki.png and Favicon.ico now but to fix the thumbnail images I will need to look into this further to see why .png is being mistaken for text/plain.
- Oddly, files in other formats like common:image:lapinrose_ratp.svg display fine (gradient-filled windows and all), even though they're thumbnailed by using inkscape to convert the original image from .svg to a .png. The <math> tags also convert LaTeX->.png internally and those display normally. --Carlb 16:40, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
- Looks like the solution was to have Linux (and not PHP's built-in algorithm) determine the file type for uploaded images. The "file -bi" command correctly identifies as image/png files that PHP mistakes for text/plain.

Mirroring Wikia
Hello. Two days ago I discovered pages like [1], [2] and [3]. First I was confused. Then annoyed. Now hm, first of all I want to ask you to change licensing on left corner. CC-by-nc-sa-2.5 is not the same than GFDL and it's not compatible. Next, even if the license is ok, atrribution is given imho wrong. Nicks should link directly to apropriate page on Wikia. And the last thing in this post: why are you doing this? All this? If you afraid of Wikia content, I want to assure that every content on Wikia is safer on Wikia than any on place outside Wikia. Personally I'm getting dumps every night. If afraid of content is the only reason, be sure I'm able to take care o wikis I'm interested, I think other poeple too and I depend you can get down now this mirror. Looking forward to you answer. Szoferka 02:54, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
Why are you confused and annoyed? The whole point of placing content under some form of open/free license is that it may be copied or mirrored with attribution to the original author.
- It's now copied whith fake license and attribution is given wrong. Szoferka 08:45, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
Wikia is not the author. Whomever wrote this content is the author. I have attempted to preserve revision history wherever possible in order to comply with this requirement.
- Yes, sure Wikia is not the author. But people, who are the part of Wikia community are the authors. You are not fighting with Wikia Carl, you are fighting with poeple. And most of people even don't realize you do. Szoferka 08:45, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
There have already been sites which provide a mirror of Uncyclopedia content; unfortunately those typically are woefully incomplete - months out-of-date and missing most (or typically all) of the images. I would like to see a proper mirror, one complete set of all the Uncyclopedias in some up-to-date and complete format with the interlanguage links and common image repository working for all languages. The existing efforts fall far short of that objective.
- It's clear for me. But: you have been asking anybody of that? I don't receive any info, although I'm the most major contributor of the second biggest Uncy-project, and Nonsensopedia ambassador I think. I would like to see – you would like to see... And what about other people? You are engaging other languages spekears to your privite battle. My edits are not steel for your sword. Szoferka 08:45, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
As for CC-BY-NC-SA and GFDL not being compatible? I'm quite aware of the issues involved. The English-language Uncyclopedia is CC-NC-SA-BY. That includes the Babel: pages, the main pages, everything. Any copy, modification, adaptation or translation of content from this Uncyclopedia into some other language wiki is therefore also CC-NC-SA-BY. To remove the non-commercial restrictions from these pages would require the consent of every author of the pages affected. We don't have that and therefore cannot lawfully claim the entire body of any Uncyclopedia to be GFDL (not if it's using any text or images, even in translation, from the English-language wiki).
- The problem is that GFDL is not compatibile to any CC-NC, becouse of allowing comercial use. But please understend sequence: first goes a couple of GFDL wikis, then Uncyclopedia. Uncy in many languages is for fun, not to fight for licensing and NC use. Are you going to court, or anybody, becouse of some translations? I'm sure you are thought that every smaller uncy is translating pages directly from Uncyclopedia. I can speak only for Polish: it's a big misunderstanding. We got five (it's less than 0.2% of wiki) pages adapted or translated from Uncyclopedia (here's the list). If becouse of that five pages you've made a mirror of Nonsensopedia, it's weird. If you'll get Nonsensopedia mirror down forever, I can delete them faster than ever. Szoferka 08:45, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
For content which has been translated or adapted from this wiki, any mirror site would also need to be free of advertising to comply with CC-BY-NC-SA.
- Sure. Becouse of NC, this tag is useless, right? I can assure you I will delete every contect translated from Uncyclopedia, if somebody place it on Nonsensopedia. It's enought? Szoferka 08:45, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
This issue has been hanging over our heads for as long as there has been an Uncyclopedia translation project. The first wiki created to translate Uncyclopedia content was Désencyclopédie, in June 2005. Wikia originally turned the request to create this one down, placing it on the "list of rejected wikicities" solely because its founders had asked to use licensing terms compatible with the original wiki. While a Désencyclopédie was eventually created, it used an awkward dual license. All subsequent Uncyclopedia-related Wikia have had licenses which are not compatible with en: - this creates a situation where, legally, any author of any page which has been translated and posted as GFDL presumably could sue. A translation of a CC-BY-NC-SA page is CC-BY-NC-SA. It is not GFDL.
- You got right, translation of a CC-NC i still NC. But please, really, plese realize that we, on Nonsensopedia, do not got pages translating from Uncyclopedia except that five. Maybe other wiki got some. Maybe lot of. But we get only that five. Uncy-related project are free and flying in their own way. Please let us fly is our way, commercial becouse of GFDL. Szoferka 08:45, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
To claim that "portions of this work are available under the GFDL" may be lawful. To claim that the entire wiki is GFDL, unless every word of text (including translations) and every image with CC-BY-NC-SA history be deleted, is not. The only persons who can change this are the authors. Not me. Not you. Not Wikia.
- Relicensing is unpossible. Let's get fork and divorce, and send to people a proper info: do not translate articles from Uncyclopedia, and, if you got some, delete them. You cannot have fun and enjoy guys, the license is forbiding you. Well, it's not the idea if Uncy I think. Szoferka 08:45, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
As for content being safe? Perhaps you should try downloading this wiki (the en: version) from Wikia and see what happens if you try to actually use the files. You'll find that the archive with full article history hasn't been downloadable in months. It reports some insanely large filesize but the download fails on the 0th byte. I've raised the issue both in bugzilla and with one of the founders of this wiki, but have gotten nowhere. Image download is also badly broken and months out of date.
- I trust Wikia. More than any other hosting service in the world. If Wikia got downtime, I can come on irc and ask what's wrong. When I need tech help, there's always somebody to help. It's a team, a real team. I got on Wikia also a couple of other wikis. There's community, there are young people getting experience in wiki, many wikis on diffrent topics. You got one slow as hell server and you are alone. So what are you afraid? That Wikia will get back invested cash and get close? Szoferka 08:45, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
Perhaps I'm a bit wary after nearly losing both de: (which had serious problems sfter moving to Wikia, but appears to be finally recovering) and fi: (a fork of which was created here by staff with none of the original content, although fortunately much of it has been recovered to an external site). The copyright/license situation is also a nightmare, largely because of the creation of Wikia which used terms incompatible with en: while taking images and translating text from this project.

It's certainly not my intention to create something non-compliant with the original free licenses under which the text was created. --Carlb 05:38, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
- You don't need to. I will help you destroy every letter translated from Uncyclopedia, jusy say a word. But I don't believe it's what you want to reach. Szoferka 08:45, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
I think it's a good idea to have a backup mirror if wikia hasn't got a downloable database for so long. I'm not well accuainted with all the liscence issues, I don't really want to dig in there. But Szoferka concern sounds reasonable to me. Anyone can be user:JohnDoe, but only the person using the account "user:JohnDoe" at wikia is the creator of whatever content of his you are mirroing. In case you were wondering we have 20 pages translated from uncyc (2 of them with the permission of their authors, Tompkins' Teenagers and my Miguel de Cervantes). I wouldn't hurry to delete those like Szoferka, people took the effort tranlate them. But I wouldn't mind referencing in a more serious way than our es:Template:Uncyclopedia, if you tell me what I'm suppoused to do. If you fear that wikia staff may take the references down, then you are taking your fears out of any reasonable proportion. In five months since Inciclopedia was created staff intervened three times. First Angela sysoped me, second she helped me change the logo, and third good old Spalrka blocked a vandal when all the admins where away.
However, my concern is very different form Szoferka's. I fear the duplicates may come to a life of their own and reproduce the Finnish situation, spliting the communities before there's any need to. In wikipedia:uncyclopedia the link to fr in the foreign uncycs section leads to the uncyclomedia mirror and not to wikia. And it has more pages than wikia?!? How come is it just a mirror?---Asteroid B612 (aka Rataube) - Ñ 01:26, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
I'm not saying that Wikia necessarily will voluntarily go on a deletion spree, removing all CC-BY-NC-SA content from the various Uncyclopedia-related wikia. I don't expect they will... at least not voluntarily and with the same fervour with which Wikipedians like to nominate Uncyclopædia-inspired nonsense for deletion as being "under a non-free license".
The risk, insofar as violations of the original non-commercial license exist, is that anyone - any author of any revision to any page that originated here - could legally demand that all of the CC-BY-NC-SA content be removed from the site. If such a demand succeeds, that would poke a massive hole through almost all of the Wikia-hosted Uncyclopedias that could be very difficult to repair. The wording [4] of this license defines commercial use as "You may not exercise any of the rights granted to You in Section 3 above in any manner that is primarily intended for or directed toward commercial advantage or private monetary compensation." Stillwaters and Chronarion initally weren't in this primarily to make money, Wikia and its investors are. That key distinction could come back to bite us, along with "This License and the rights granted hereunder will terminate automatically upon any breach by You of the terms of this License. Individuals or entities who have received Derivative Works or Collective Works from You under this License, however, will not have their licenses terminated provided such individuals or entities remain in full compliance with those licenses."
I'm aware of the {{uncyclopédia}} templates (they are and have been in use on fr: since inception) but there are two separate issues to be dealt with when handling CC-BY-NC content:
- We can't claim to grant others rights to use this stuff (or translations and derivative works) under a commercial license such as GFDL if we don't have those rights to the material ourselves. This is the point that tagging {{uncyclopédia}} or vague "CC-BY-NC-SA, portions GFDL" weaselwords attempt to address.
- We're also not free to make commercial use of the material ourselves, short of obtaining permission from every author of every edit on every page affected. This represents a problem when posting the material to a site like Wikia that operates primarily for commercial/monetary compensation. They have investors, paid staff, ads - certainly not the original model of a few college students putting an "uncyclopedia" online just for a few cheap laughs. No quantity of templates will make this one go away.
The affected pages aren't just whatever's been translated from en: to some other language (starting with my bungled attempt to translate the already-marginal Eiffel Tower article to fr:Tour Eiffel in June '05). Many of our languages started out as Babel:XX/pagename and were split to separate wikis later. All of those pages, as they originated on this wiki, would be CC-BY-NC-SA, even if they never existed as English-language text. In some languages, this would be hundreds of pages, even without counting translations from en: to other wikis.
That doesn't mean that the texts should be forever erased from every computer on the planet. Au contraire, the translations should be reusable - just so long we keep a copy, they can be reposted with attribution to a non-commercial site with no ads under the original license. The whole point of all of these various free/open-content licenses is that the stuff can be mirrored, adapted, translated, modified.
I've made a few translations from en: -> fr: (although at the moment I find it best that I stop doing so until this whole question of copyright is addressed). Hopefully all of that work has some legitimate place other than the bit bucket or la poubelle. Nonetheless, both attribution and any attempt to obtain permission for commercial use gets awkward if many of the contributions are pseudonymous or outright anonymous. That Uncyclopedia itself was founded (or co-founded) by some gal out west under a pseudonym doesn't make matters any simpler, I'd suppose.
While I do see a contradiction in anyone simulentaneously insisting "the whole wiki is GFDL, we don't have any significant amounts of non-commercial content here" and at the same time wanting all mirrors taken down (the whole purpose of CC and GFDL is to allow mirrors and forks), there are a few issues where possibly things do need to be changed on the mirrors:
- The license situation needs to be explained properly. It's ugly... The Uncyclopedia content is CC-BY-NC-SA but some portions which originally came into existence elsewhere may be GFDL? How does one explain *that* in sixteen languages of various individual wikis?
- Items which are tagged "fair use under US copyright law", what becomes of them if a mirror is located in a non-US data centre?
- Text like "this is a mirror" or "this userpage originated elsewhere" may need to be created and translated to various languages, but at what point should it appear? On userpages? In the disclaimers? Normally by convention wiki texts don't identify authorship on the page itself, but the author info does need to be easily reachable from the article history... if we even know who wrote the stuff.
- On articles that have been lost and recovered (the fi: mess, for instance) we may have current revision only on some pages - and no Babelfish to even translate a message to that effect. Attributing it to a site is not a substitute for attributing it to an author.
- What about version control? If pt:cheiramento de gatinhos links en:kitten huffing, a robot script should be able to generate the corresponding reverse link. I had a robot handling interlanguage links, but found so many problems with inability to link from Wikia to other languages (ten of the twenty-four languages are missing or wrong) that I'd shut this process down. I would like to see the links working properly (one of the reasons behind originally creating the mirror set, as discussed in the forum thread about uncyclomedia.org back in early July) but every update to a mirrored site will clobber this? And what happens if a page is mirrored, then the original is VFD'ed?
Fine mess, this... --Carlb 04:06, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
You still don't answer my question. Does the french mirror have a life of it's own or some of the pages were deleted on the original after being mirrored? Why does the page at wikipedia links to the mirror as if it were the oficial? Is it a mistake or is it intended? Or maybe you have no hand on it and have no idea? (In that case I'll change it to wikia's). I would feel much securer if you block the mirrors and let them be edited just by a few authoriced people and just to update them. Otherwise you are inviting people to split the communities when there's no need at all, and hence you are becoming far more dangerous to the project than wikia.---Asteroid B612 (aka Rataube) - Ñ 11:39, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Mirrors
First of all, I figured out you didn't split the french uncyc as I feared, so please accept my appologies.
I support the idea of making mirrors, but I'm still concerned with a few points. The thing is that (correct me if I'm wrong) nobody deletes the pages that get deleted on the originals. That's a serious problem. If someone writes an article slandering or cyberbulling, it stays online and available forever. Is it possible to make a bot to delete all the pages daily or at least weekly?
Also, anyone can edit the mirrors, and people could edit them without even realizing they are at a different place. Nothing stopped me from making this page. Could we use a mediawiki message indacating on each page that those are just mirrors, and block all the pages from being edited by non-admins?---Asteroid B612 (aka Rataube) - Ñ 01:46, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
On UnMeta - Goatse vandalism
...on every page! Quick, quick, quick! Or not. It doesn't bother me. Unless I visit that site again. ~ 07:54, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
Offending IP ranges are AOL proxies again, they're blocked (yes, an entire second 64K AOL IP range has been added to the anon-post ban list across every wiki on that server, fine PITA that) and I've notified AOL of the situation (for what little good that does):
- To: support at aol.com
- cc: sophia at uncyclomedia.org
- bcc: abuse at aol.com
- Subject: AOL 64.12.0.0/16 and 205.188.0.0/16 have been IP rangeblocked from posting to *.uncyclopedia.info et al
- The IP ranges 64.12.0.0/16 and 205.188.0.0/16 are showing as banned from posting (and in some cases banned from account registration) on all wikis in domains *.uncyclopedia.info, *.uncyclomedia.org, *.pedia.ws, *.pedie.info, *.nokidding.ca, *.nokidding.info and seemingly any others on that group of servers.
- The reason listed is repeated spamming of links to pornographic images (goatse and the like) from AOL proxies in this range, which are misconfigured in such a way as to make a large number of users appear to be at one address.
- The blocklists http://uncyclopedia.info/wiki/Special:Ipblocklist and http://meta.uncyclomedia.org/wiki/Special:Ipblocklist (for example) look something like:
- 12:30, 23 August 2006, Carlb (Talk) blocked 205.188.0.0/16 (contribs) (infinite, anon. only) (unblock) (This range is AOL, a site misconfigured to have a large number of users appear to be at the same IP address. While it currently may be used to register for an account and post as a registered user, anonymous posts have been disabled from this address.)
- 07:52, 23 August 2006, Ghelae (Talk) blocked 205.188.116.202 (contribs) (infinite, account creation blocked) (unblock) (omg goatse)
- 08:34, 21 August 2006, Ghelae (Talk) blocked 205.188.116.136 (contribs) (infinite, account creation blocked) (unblock) (omg goatse)
- 15:20, 8 August 2006, Ghelae (Talk) blocked Ghelæ (contribs) (infinite, account creation blocked) (unblock) (so no imposter logs into this account)
- 18:00, 2 August 2006, Ghelae (Talk) blocked 64.12.0.0/16 (contribs) (infinite, account creation blocked) (unblock) (Same reason as on UnMeta - AOL proxy who blanked pages with goatse)
- where some of the original offending posts (from http://uncyclopedia.info/wiki/Special:Recentchanges - all times UTC) were:
- 205.188.116.202 05:27, 23 August 2006 (hist) (diff) Uncyclopædia:About
- 205.188.116.136 00:13, 21 August 2006 (hist) (diff) Main Page (PWNED FAGS, GNAA ROOLZ)
- Presumably these rangeblocks (if they're being placed across entire 65536 IP address blocks on every wiki on the site for every instance in which pages have been defaced with unsolicited gay porn) affect not only the users causing the problems, but all users of AOL. This is occuring because AOLs proxies are configured in such a way that individual users appear at multiple addresses and multiple users are appearing at the same addresses.
- I have no reasonable expectation that these IP rangeblocks will be unbanned on any of the wikis that have them blocked, given the current situation. The only reason why I enquire of this matter is to ask if AOL has any plans to correct the problems (net abuse, plus a rather problematic proxy configuration) so that fewer AOL users outside the (hopefully a) minority engaged in spamming the unsolicited gay porn links find themselves banned from these sites solely by using an AOL IP address.
- I seem to be able to reach the sites normally, just so long as I do so from a non-AOL IP address, so it's not the wiki that's the problem. It's AOL. Could you please tell me if you have any plans to correct the proxy IP issues?

Tidying the user database
Hi Carl. You mentioned here that there is a script to remove unused user names from the databse. Do you have more information on that? I've looked on Wikimedia Meta, can can't find anything there. There is a bug in bugzilla talking about the possibility, but it doesn't seem to have gone anywhere (and won't if the developers have their way it seems!) I also found a diff on Wikipedia that looks interesting - was it that you were talking about? Thanks for any help -- sannse (talk) 07:09, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
- The one I'd had in mind was the maintenance/removeUnusedAccounts.php script, which is a standard part of the MediaWiki distribution but which runs from the command line. It defines an unused account as any account (except for user #1) which has no edits and no uploaded files.
- It isn't quite as ambitious as the "delete unused username after 90 days" proposal on WP. It checks simply for lack of edits - not for length of time an unused account has existed nor for whether the account is a deliberately-created placeholder {{doppelganger}}. As it's not an extension, searching through the 250-odd MediaWiki extensions on wp:Meta would turn up nothing. --Carlb 05:21, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks Carl, I've passed that onto Gil. I think it will be a partial solution to the user list problem. The other side of it is the number of vandal accounts with edits (the User:20 Crazy Carl on Crack accounts blocked! type, with edits). What I've suggested for those is a rename script, to something bland like User:Renamed AA12. Thanks again for the pointer -- sannse (talk) 20:39, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Posers Page
Dude, please help me. Somebody deleted the Posers page without even discussing it with anyone at all. Like I just edited it yesterday and now its gone. I'm not sure who to turn to but I know ur an admin. Can you restore it or at least tell me what I can do to help get it back? Or could I just have the html to the page or something.
Please, Please for the love of god help me!! I want my Posers page back!!
- When a page has been deleted, the first thing you should do is check whether it has been listed on VFD; this can be accomplished by clicking "What Links Here" in the sidebar. In this case, it was indeed listed on VFD, and deleted due to the fact that the article consisted almost entirely of a series of unfunny lists. Really, there wasn't a single thing on that page that was remotely creative.
- When a page is salvageable, and a user asks politely, admins may often choose to move a page into that user's userspace, where that user may attempt to fix it up before moving it back to where it was. However, if a user instead decides to recreate a deleted page with insults to administrators, the page is generally re-deleted and locked, and the user is banned.
- I've taken the liberty of re-deleting the page. Consider this a warning. --Algorithm 03:10, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
You know what you prick, go fuck yourself and die. Don't tell me it isn't creative and other things are, don’t tell me it wasn't funny you idiot, don’t tell me that was a warning. This whole site is just a bunch of bullshit anyway, how can you possibly be able to say one pile of shit is more important than another pile of shit???? I won't be coming on here again so go ahead and ban me I don’t really care, so just go fuck yourself, and slit your fucking throat as a favor to all us uncreative, unfunny, and unapologetic people out there!
Go to hell you fascist nerd!
- The original page does still exist on a mirror at http://uncyc.org/wiki/Posers but yes, it does seem to be one endlessly long but not terribly amusing list.

- Unciklopedia and Uncyclopedia.info currently appear to be up and running normally. My dedicated hosting provider has just opened yet another new datacentre and IP addresses for many of their servers were changed late Sunday night. This would affect many servers that were being hosted by eSecuredata in Vancouver's Harbour Centre. The old addresses should be gone from DNS by now, but if your browser was or is attempting to access the old IP address (66.196.48.97) instead of the new ones this would account for any errors observed. --Carlb 22:56, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Extensions for Hikipedia
Hi, would it be possible to have a couple of new MediaWiki extensions installed on Finnish Uncyclopedia? Extensions I had in mind: CategoryTree, Renameuser, EasyTimeline, Newuserlog, Poem, DeletedContributions and Submit_In_Toolbar. Also, a new version of MediaWiki would be nice though it has nothing to do with these extensions – nor does it have any effect on us (as simple users and admins...). Finally our friends at Wikipedia would stop laughing at our 1.8alpha. Or maybe they wouldn't... :). But if we could at least have those extensions, we would be grateful. --JAT 22:17, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for extensions and MediaWiki upgrade! Still, I'd like to ask for two changes: The icons of Submit_In_Toolbar should be on the right side of the toolbar (e.g. after the old buttons). I think they are now somewhat confusing. The second problem is about headings and [edit] links ([muokkaa] in Hikipedia). Those links are now located on the left, before actual headings. I think the old style in which [edit] link had a smaller font and was aligned to the right was better. --JAT 10:54, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
Sorry to bother you again but there are still some problems with the new MediaWiki. Mathematical expressions are not working because texvc is not installed (or doesn't work properly?). You can see the problem here. Also, wiki tables and HTML tables now have a white background instead of transparent one. We solved the problem by making the changes to common.css but I guess there is a software-related way to do handle this? And Submit_In_Toolbar icons are still located on the left side of the toolbar while the right side would suit better. Anyway, texvc is the real problem at the moment and latter two are just trivial. If you I had time to solve those two too, that'd be nice :) --JAT 17:20, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
- The math is working now, the table CSS was changed in MediaWiki (as of 1.9) http://hiki.pedia.ws/skins/monobook/main.css in the "general" section - I've commented out that portion for now. I've asked the SubmitInToolbar author (on userpage) why icons appear on the left, so far I've received no reply. --Carlb 14:07, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for Submit In Toolbar 0.0.2. It works fine. One more thing (At least for now. ...These little things just keep popping up :) ) It seems that since the upgrade, MediaWiki no longer keep a record how many times a certain page is accessed. Perhaps it has something to do with PHP caching or something (just a wild guess)? Anyway, the numbers don't increase in the footer (in Tämä sivu on näytetty X kertaa or This page has viewed/accessed X times). It's not a big deal and please feel free to disable that feature altogether if there's no easy way to solve the problem. --JAT 09:42, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
