Forum:UnTunes, UnBooks, Game portal on sidebar
Okay, i've been thinking. We have UnNews which can be easily seen and found out about by new readers and new users on this site, but what about things such as UnTunes, UnBooks and the newly created Game Portal? (Which YTTE has done a fantastic job with by the way) All of these have some great content that is often left undiscovered by newer readers and users on the site. For a fair example of this, I didn't even realise we had an UnTunes until a fair bit into my stay at Uncyc. So basically my proposition is this: we add UnTunes, UnBooks and the Game Portal to the sidebar to make this content easier to find for newer users. If not that then we find a way to promote these sections, maybe on the main page. It's not really fair that these sections get overlooked, while things like UnNews steal all the glory and fame with it's little box on the main page. The prissy little bastard...Anyway...Suggestions? Ideas? Thoughts? May 28, 08:27
- I don't know, we also have UnScripts if you didn't know. But the main problem is not making the menu too long. Mostly people don't bother to look at the SisterProjects Template on the front page. Maybe we need to promote that. -- 08:33, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm good idea, i'd forgotten about UnScripts too, which demonstrates how easily overlooked some of our other namespaces are. But I do like the idea of promoting the SisterProjects template a little more
- I reckon UnScripts, Game, UnTunes and UnBooks could all fit on the menu bar. Also I'm not really sure if Featured content needs to be on there... If the menu did get a bit long you can always start introducing new tabs at the top of pages (with a little bit of js) to link to things... - [09:04 28 May] Sir FSt. Don Pleb Yettie (talk) QotF BFF NotM RotM UNPotM UGotM CUN PEE SR UnProvise
- Featured content needs to be on there. Reading featured articles is much better for noobs than just reading random crap for ideas/seeing how to improve. They are our best articles, they need to be there and sometimes I just like flicking through them for a good read. I suppose the top edit box thing is good. -- 09:25, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
- Well considering the Japanese Uncyclopedia has one in a seperate box. But the question is how much is too much. We might even have a lot of undiscovered Namespaces that could potentially stretch them down further. I think we should focus on what namespaces to put on the sidebar. -- 09:22, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
- We could use the MediaWiki Sitenotice to have a "switch namespace" header? That would go on every page between the title and the tab buttons. What do you think? - [09:34 28 May] Sir FSt. Don Pleb Yettie (talk) QotF BFF NotM RotM UNPotM UGotM CUN PEE SR UnProvise
- How'bout a point on the sidebar which alternates between namespaces? -- 09:41, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

- We can't exactly put a link to every project or place to vote on the sidebar. Put them in the community portal. Or swap the things to do or VFH/VFP links for a "projects" link or something. • Spang • ☃ • talk • 12:17, 28 May 2008
- Well how many of them are there? Game, UnTunes, UnBooks, UnScripts, HowTo and Why. If you make a page which links to the UnBooks portal and the UnScripts portal you could then add the following five links: Games, UnTunes, UnBooks and UnScripts, HowTo, Why. You could even make HowTo and Why one link, so you're only adding four new links. Then you put these pretty links (along with the current UnNews link) in a new box (like the "community" box) under the title of "namespaces". It wouldn't take up all that much room. - [12:48 28 May] Sir FSt. Don Pleb Yettie (talk) QotF BFF NotM RotM UNPotM UGotM CUN PEE SR UnProvise
- You should see here for every logo for every namespace. You'd be suprise on how much there is. -- 12:56, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, so there's a couple more namespaces, but they're really really minor ones. I say that we just put the slightly more important projects (or slightly more interesting/different) like Why?, HowTo (that's used tonnes and still it doesn't get a link in the side bar!), Game and UnBooks and UnScripts. Just those lot. Or you could have four slots that go to different namespaces, and every month the links in these slots are changed monthly according to some voting process (just throwing an idea around). - [13:02 28 May] Sir FSt. Don Pleb Yettie (talk) QotF BFF NotM RotM UNPotM UGotM CUN PEE SR UnProvise

- Yeah.... I reckon if you had them in a new box or sumin' ... - [18:27 28 May] Sir FSt. Don Pleb Yettie (talk) QotF BFF NotM RotM UNPotM UGotM CUN PEE SR UnProvise
- Because it's fine as it is. Too many links on the sidebar is bad. What you want is exactly what portals are for. Make an Uncyclopedia:Projects page, and add everything you could want to link to there, and perhaps that could be linked on the sidebar. And the projects box in the community portal could do with updating too, but nobody seems to remember it's even there these days. • Spang • ☃ • talk • 19:28, 28 May 2008
- And therein lies the problem, people will see a new projects page as 'something Nobody Cares about just like the community portal we have now. It'll eventually get forgotten and fall into disrepair. I'm talking about something that people will think "oooh what's that?" when they see it, then click on it and be transported away to mystical realms... May 28, 19:35
- Now, I'm not exactly the greatest person to ask in the world, but looking at it I'd say there were two main reasons the Community Portal got forgotten about (incidentally, if no-one else can be bothered, I'm up for updating that sometime) – the fact that it got fully protected, meaning that non-ops wouldn't have an incentive to go there with new stuff; and the VD, which would have taken away quite a lot of the links from the portal. If you were to make UN:Projects or something, you'd have avoid these pitfalls. Now, while I doubt it's be protected, you'd have to make it different in some way, easily accessible, and reasonably well advertised. Also, to the original topic: against more sidebar links. There's too many already (to the point where people have js's that overwrite them rather than adding new ones). ―― Sir Heerenveen, KUN [UotM RotM VFH FFS SK CM NS OME™] (talk), 28/05 19:44
- Way ahead of you on the protection front ;)
- Well if it's true that nobody cares about sidebar links, what's the point of putting more in in the first place? Why would people say "ohh what's that?" to an unbooks link and ignore a general projects link? And I'm guessing the more there are, the less attention will be paid to each one. And I don't think community portal's been forgotten about - I used it all the time when I was new, and I imagine a lot of other people use it too, just nobody notices because it isn't used, and more experienced editors already know where everything is. • Spang • ☃ • talk • 19:54, 28 May 2008
- Problem solved I would say. I would suggest that users add the community portal to their watchlists now it's not protected. I have, as I think it could be a bit of a vandal magnet. :-) MrN 20:03, May 28
- It comes down to a matter of words. if you opened a page as a new user and saw two links on the page, one reading Community portal and one reading UnTunes, which one would you choose? Community portal screams boring to me and it would to other readers seeking fun I think.
- Why not rename the link "Fun fun fun" then? - [20:10 28 May] Sir FSt. Don Pleb Yettie (talk) QotF BFF NotM RotM UNPotM UGotM CUN PEE SR UnProvise
- Na, screw it. Just replace em all with a link to my userpage. HeHe. MrN 20:13, May 28
- I agree with most of what Spang says. We don't need more sidebar links. I think updating the Portal would be fine. Or maybe not. *shrugs* - Don Leddy the Crunch (Nyah, see, nyah!) 20:53, May 28
- Wow Led, no need to be so pushy. MrN 20:58, May 28
- Alright, it seems that seperate links on the sidebar to some of our more major projects are out, so that leaves us with Spangs idea of creating a 'projects' page or something similar and linking that to the sidebar or of overhauling our community portal a little and drawing more attention to it around the site. The real question is...
... Why the fuck is VFD still not in the goddamn sidebar? That was suppose to be put in back when VFH and VFP were added. What the fuck happened, and how come you dickweeds still haven't added it? Don't worry about the Games, UnScripts, and all those other projects no one actually cares about. Seriously, add VFD to the damn side. --MegaPleb • Dexter111344 • Complain here 15:47, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

- That's a tricky one Dexter. Do we really want a load of IPs wandering around over at VFD? Actually, thinking about it, that's not a problem at VFH or VFP so I guess the only problem would be the "we don't want anymore links" view... But would it be worth it? Maybe if we dropped on of the other links which are not really that relevant. I don't remember ever seeing a Pee Review from an IP, and I wonder if we really need the Chatroom link when it could be listed in the Community portal. I rate your chances at getting this changed at 1 in 10 however my VFD interested chum. MrN 16:08, May 31
- We don't have to worry about IP's messing up VFD. It's protected from anonymous and new users from editing(if you haven't noticed in your whole time being here). --MegaPleb • Dexter111344 • Complain here 16:39, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

- First of all, VFD was never in the the sidebar. Second of all, it hopefully never will be. Third of all, do you really think that a page for deleting bad articles is one of the main focuses of this wiki? Hint: It's not. • Spang • ☃ • talk • 22:48, 31 May 2008
- YesTimeToEdit: Yea, I have no idea how that slipped my mind. Spag: Obviously I agree. Hopefully our main focus is creating new funny articles, and improving current ones. According to this VFD is our most edited page by some margin. Personally I think removing poor articles is important. I feel that for us to impose progressively higher standards on the quality of new articles that we accept we need to make sure that the ones we have now reflect those standards whenever possible. I'm not convinced that adding a VFD link to the sidebar is going to help that happen however. We probably only want people who have been around the site a while to be using VFD. I have a bookmark in Firefox and find that's the best for me to jump to the page. MrN 18:51, Jun 1
