There have been several discussions of the value of in-jokes on the VFH page recently. Here are some thoughts...*puts on poncy pedantic whine hat* In my opinion, the front-page featured article is an offering to the Great Reading Public, showcasing the best that Uncyc has to offer. As such the feature should be understandable to casual readers -- ie, it should not be an esoteric in-joke. But really, we insiders enjoy in-jokes! So, would it be desirable to have a regular (or, I suppose, irregular) feature that is labeled as The Current In-Joke? That way we can divert funny in-jokes from the VFH queue and give them some front-page space, and (hopefully) casual readers will say "Hmm! Must be an in-joke! 'Cos it says it's an in-joke. What a droll community, perhaps I'll join up and write for Uncyc." (Well, it's either droll or drool.) But. That's the idea. What ya thinks? ----OEJ 00:27, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

  • Currently featured in-joke? It could work. Maybe as a banner, perhaps, instead of a very large noticable bit. --Mr. Monkey Sockmonkey.gif Pant-hoot here. 00:30, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

  • No no no. Why would you want injokes on the main page in the first place? How would the injoke be funnier if it's put on the main page? Who would it appeal to? Everyone that would get the joke would probably already know about it through the forum, so putting it on the main page would just be for the "I get it and other people might not" ego boost. Might be a better idea to put such a thing on the VD page, because to want to put injokes on the main page would be to misunderstand what the main page is for. If an article is genuinely funny enough that casual readers would get it, it should be fine to go through VFH and be featured the normal way. If it's not, it shouldn't be on the main page. • I like it, actually. I see it as kind of a thing with Uncyclopedia:In-jokes, that we put maybe below the DYK, and use DPL or choose/option to rotate classic in-joke pages through, complete with a bit of explanation from the official in-jokes page. I see it as sort of a gateway into Uncyc culture (and I use the term culture very loosely here) for new users. Who knows, maybe a few others might actually enjoy some of the retarded crap we find funny.. - P.M., WotM, & GUN, Sir Led Balloon Baloon.gif(Tick Tock) (Contribs) 04:15, Sep 29
  • Per Spang. I see arguments over what constitutes an in-joke happening, but this time in a large wave. More so than the Winkler incident or Euroipods... Also, I see IPs adding in-joke to every goddamn page they can imagine. It's already hard enough to stop the current shit they do. This adds another level of difficulty. Plus, the in-jokes that have been featured previously have been funny to a wide audience, but they are in-jokes to us for an entire different reason than why casual readers found them funny. Euroipods - an in-joke because of the argument on the talk page, but normal people laugh at it for its stupidity. Just like Fisher Price is an in-joke for the fact that it has a well-written retrospective. The casual reader may only find it funny because it's clearly vandalism, but it got featured. --MegaPleb Dexter111344 Complain here 04:21, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
  • Spang and Dexter make some good points. I imagine that articles which are of good quality except for being specifically about Uncyc culture would be the kind of thing that would occasionally crop up on a hypothetical feature. Stuff that gets good VHF votes except for being in-jokes. I'm not advocating encouraging Chuck Norris or [whatever]Ipods. Holy shit, Dexter's right, we have enough trouble getting certain articles outside the cliche zone as it is. Anyway. It's just a thought. ----OEJ 12:04, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
    • Uncyclopedia:UnSignpost is a good place to talk about in-jokes I guess. Anyone can submit an article... Also, everyone else appears to be using a level 1 indent, and I'm trying to step away from the herd... MrN MrN9000SouthParksmall.jpg 19:46, Sep 29
      • Oh, great. Now you're too close to me. Also, against more jumble-mumble on the frontpage. Injokes that aren't popular enough to pass VFH can go in the Signpost. Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 23:00, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
  • I'm so disappointed we couldn't work out some kind of bailout package for the injokes. Oh well, I guess we'll have to trust in the humor free market. – Preceding unsigned comment added by Bradaphraser (talk • contribs) diff
  • For only $2 million I will drop the idea. That's a cheap bailout! Come on, BAIL! But it's not such a good idea really. The FP has already got lots of bells and pizzles. Thanks for your attention, all. Now go write an article or something. ----OEJ 02:04, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
  • Preserve the sanctity of the main page. We may not be a Wikipedia parody at heart anymore, but that is our origin and it's how we're presented to the world. The Main Page already has differences from Wikipedia's Main Page, most prominently the banners that periodically present themselves along the top of the page and "Yesterday's Featured Article", but I still believe that we should maintain the Main Page to be as direct a parody of Wikipedia as we can manage. Wikipedia has no in-joke section, so I say we have no in-joke section. As MrN said, it's already in the UnSignpost anyway. Any in-joke ...

...I would be making in such an article would be one I only understand myself - but I'd aim at something I wouldn't understand either. In-jokes can be funny to outsiders, of course. Satirizing an in-joke is what probably would happen, and yes, esoteric would be the result. I won't say yes and I won't say no, as James Finlayson put it.-- Style Oranssiviiva.jpg Guide 17:27, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
