You Know What?

I've been looking through the old forum archives, looking for things Wikia has screwed up on, and here are some of them. Be sure to add some if I've messed up, along with a link to some evidence.

They've screwed up our image boxes.

They forced us to join their Wikia.com menagerie.

They've deleted articles just because some asshole threatened to sue them.

They've forced us to use the bullshit Monaco skin for IPs who visit the site(After saying they wouldn't).

So to hell with Wikia. I realize that this might start "drama," but after reading all the times Wikia has attempted to rule like an iron fist, while we just sit here like a bitch and take it, I think we need to actually do something about it. --Revolutionary, Anti-Bensonist, and TYATU Boss Uncyclopedian Meganew (Chat) (Care for a peek at my work?) A notable example would be the Freespace Wiki, as they have a fully functional one that doesn't rely on Wikia for anything(except ideas to improve the site). Out of the vast research that you've carried out, the only one that is correct is the one with the domain name. Correct, that one was a bad move and caused great harm to the community. However,

• Number one - a bug, was fixed.
• Number three - did not happen here but rather in the Spanish Uncyclopedia.
• Number four - a bug, was fixed AND they apologized for it.

I'm not a big fan of some of their policies, but generally speaking they've been decent with us most of the time. Are you looking under the rug for trouble because you might be bored? ~ 22:38, December 18, 2010 (UTC)

I just like to point out

Most of the bad stuff that Wikia has done over the past 2 years has been mostly out of incompetence or malice.

• The image thing was an accident, and corrected relatively quickly. Noone at Wikia was thinking, "Let's break uncyclopedia for the LUTZ."
• The domain name thing was over 2 years ago. Granted, it was evil, but we have lived with it this long.
• The deleted article was on another language wiki, and I think they may have deleted more to protect the author than themselves. They have resisted legal threats in the past.
• The Monaco thing was also 2 years, and they relented on that issue. The Monaco skin doesn't even exist anymore

In summary, I'm going to wait until Wikia does something evil out of malice (as opposed to mere laziness or incompetence) until I join a "Fuck EBIL WIKIA!!!!!" crusade. --Mn-z 22:45, December 18, 2010 (UTC)

To be honest, I'm starting to agree with the deceased CartoonistHenning. Wikia has implemented various things without the community's consent. Admittedly, the staff that regularly inform us of Wikia's policies(Sannse) have been quite helpful with the site, but it's the people above her I can't stand. I can't recall Wikia doing anything evil of significance in quite a while (like 2 years or so). Granted, the site has been slow &/or buggy on occasion, but I don't think CarlB's wiki farm or any other free wiki hosting site would be any better in that respect. Yeah

• We had a conversation on IRC about this a couple weeks ago. Olipro informed me that the only thing currently keeping us from leaving wikia is the fact that the Uncyclopedia community no longer owns the uncyclopedia.org domain name: it was sold by chronarion to Wikia. And Wikia doesn't want to sell "uncyclopedia.org" back to us, even though they clearly aren't using it for anything. Once we get a domain name everything else, according to Olipro, would be fairly simple because there are several other people who would be willing to host our wiki. I have spoken to sannse about our community buying back our domain name from Wikia, but she told me to talk to her again in January. Perhaps we could make some actual fundraising banners and raise money to buy back our domain name. -- The Zombiebaron 23:38, December 18, 2010 (UTC)

I'm not sure why they care, I don't think we make them any money. But they did buy our domain name from chronarion for a sizable amount of money, so I can understand why they would be reluctant to give it back to us for free. Sense of perspective

Kip ranted (my word) about the thumbnail screw-up on UnNews talk:Wikia lays off 600-700 and I rambled (his word) about keeping perspective. Further to my remarks there: One employer of mine insisted that I do my writing using software they were actively tweaking to sell as a product. The screw-ups there were constant, my ability to deliver work was at risk, and my status as their guinea pig carried no urgency with them.

As I told Aleister during the recent skin controversy, I find my free rental of Wikia's imperfect servers to be a fair deal, as it only costs me such of my imperfect writing/editing as I wish to give.
