“ Who the fuck uses GIMP? Doesn't everyone just BitTorrent the superior Photoshop?”

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program, not to be confused for The Gimp from Pulp Fiction or that famous gimp, Ian Whiley) is the preferred image manipulator for Linux geeks, using the XCF file format. Probably the only open-source image manipulator available so far, 50 million people have downloaded it.
Its name is an acronym of "Gnu pIMP", referring both to its open-sourced policy and the program's ability to make money from the images you create with it. The funds raised go directly to Richard Stallman's account in Switzerland.
The correct pronunciation of GIMP is "PIMP".
History
The GIMP project was initiated after a scholarly discussion on one of his favorite forums:
* Someguy posts some Photoshoped picture * RMS: LOL is that for real? Someguy: no dog i made it RMS: how? Someguy: photoshop RMS: is it free software? Someguy: nah RMS: damn it! i wanna put gates in a comical situation!
Features
Created for the world's best operating system, Linux, the program does complex tasks like editing images with ease. Some tasks, such as making the image bigger, however, take a lot of time and l33t skills. It is available from anywhere you can find free software.
While standard editing features are implemented, GIMP comes with a Python console to perform advanced photo manipulation and snake charming.
While GIMP does have its hiccups, it's way better than Photoshop or Paint.
Innovations
GIMP is credited with many innovations in the fields of greatness. Since the release of version 2.6, GIMP has improved its ability to load .bmp images; versions previous to 2.6 could load .bmp images, but with limited color palettes. Version 2.8 also brings the ability to load 2 images at once, a highly-desired feature which can get Linux users working faster on image manipulation.
As GIMP was originally intended for Linux users dissatisfied with Photoshop being closed source, GIMP also includes many features that Photoshop doesn't have. GIMP includes the incredible ability to load fries created in Adobe Potatochop (previously, this could only be done in GINSu, a separate program for potato-chopping); an low-memory mode introduced in version 2.8 allows the user to take up less memory while using the GIMP. Planned features for version 2.10 include more filters and a plugin which makes the image look like it was taken with a thermal camera (this has been a requested feature since GIMP's beta stages).
