Forum:Suggestion for next year's Top 10 voting
I threw this out on the discussion page for Top Ten of 2006, but I'll put it here, too. Brad has pointed out that next year (assuming the oceans don't rise and the asteroids don't fall) we'll be voting for 365 articles, which is way, way, way too much for one person to choose from. And I am somewhat distressed that Horton Hires A Ho! is lagging behind on the voting, since it got the highest score on VFH this year and was wildly popular when it ran this fall.
Therefore, I propose a minimum VFH score to make it to end-of-the-year voting. +16 seems to be the average score for featured articles(although with daily features, that number has dropped to +14 and +15), so let's require a higher score for top ten voting -- something like +18 or +20. It will weed out the borderline pieces, allow us to weigh the merits of the nominees better and make the end-of-the-year list more representative of VFH. Thoughts?--Procopius 14:54, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
- We should also take into account how much time it spends on VFH. There are a lot of articles that make it only one day after being put on VFH because of their popularity. Crazyswordsman...With SAVINGS!!!! (T/C) 14:58, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
- Good point. Hardwick Fundlebuggy's Prison Journal moved very quickly, as I recall.--Procopius 15:00, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
- Or.....howabout we have a "Best of the Month" with say the top two or three going through to the year end "Best in Show"? -- Sir Mhaille (talk to me)
- That could work. "Our contestants went to Barbados earlier this week, and we have some film of Christmas Number Ones frolicking on the beach."--Procopius 15:12, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
- Plus it gives us yet another reason to expand the democratic process, that and spamming our sig on another vote page! :) -- Sir Mhaille (talk to me)
- I like Mhaille's suggestion better than Procopius's because articles get high scores because of volume of votes at the time, not necessarily because of higher quality (though that obvious helps, too). A "best of the month" that would wittle down the articles from 30 a month to say 3 per month would make an end of the year "Top10" much more reasonable.--<<>> 15:16, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, an 'article of the month' along with two runners up every month would be a better idea than just judging from score on VFH. Also, it'd be another great showreel for the site's newcomers, a 'step up' from the featured articles. -- Hindleyite Converse • ?pedia 15:24, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

- For making a time machine and using it to go back and do the same thing for 2006, so that I don't have to feel all cold and heartless inside for only have ten votes to spend.--Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 19:55, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
- For I think this is a good idea. It would also help to remove a lot of the 'trends' I see unfolding in the voting this year, namely new articles seem to get voted on more than old ones, certain author's articles seem to get voted on more, and Captain Obvious, which isn't that funny, is getting voted on, period. --Sir ENeGMA (talk) GUN WotM PLS 23:17, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

- for an article of the month vote. so do we have a top 12 of the year, which is the winners of the monthly votes, or do we do top 5 of the month, and vote from them at the end of the year? - jack mort | cunt | talk - 20:36, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
