Forum:Gallery fire week: a modest proposal (OMG eating babies!)
According to this, we are the 8th largest collection (by number of files) of images on a public MediaWiki wiki in the world. We have thousands (and more) of unused images and hundreds of duplicates (list generated by spang from downloaded .tar file).
I propose a concerted effort to mass murder unused, duplicate, and unneeded images, which would involve these easy steps:
- Several people download the total image database (about 1 gig) as a backup.
- DELETE LOTS OF IMAGES.
- Restore any accidental deletions from the backups on a case-by-case basis.
- ???
- Profit!
Deletion of unused images would ideally take the form of: deleting all unused images. Deletion of the duplicates may be a bit more complex (especially for all the older versions out there). The original upload shouldn't be deleted as it contains the username and date of upload, but where there are more than two copies (top and bottom) of the image, the middle duplicates can be deleted.
Anywho, whatcha think? Gallery Fire Week? Discuss! --Splaka 07:10, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

I started on the duplicates, but they'll take forever to do manually. A bot that could do this would be a hell of a lot better. Soon as I've got a copy of the archive again, I'll start on those unused images. Maybe then I'll win the huffing log. • Spang • ☃ • talk • 09:21, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
I'm all for downloading and then deleting every unused image. We have more duplicates, copies of images from WP or other websites, images left over from deleted articles and images from Babel pages that have since moved off en: to other wikis than we can ever find a need to keep. Some common patterns, like duplicates of WP or other-language Uncyc images that aren't in use here, should be easy to spot.
The only reason there's been so much resistance to getting rid of this whole mess is the relative difficulty in undeleting things. Burn the lot of them to a DVD-R or store them on localhost (I could put them up for download locally here if need be), then on the main site... just burn them all. --Carlb 18:00, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
Right, I've backed up all the images now. Unused image genocide time! If I delete one I shouldn't have let me know and I'll laugh at you, then maybe upload it again. • Spang • ☃ • talk • 20:30, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
Oh my god this is long over due. Oh yah, and it was awesome clicking recent changes and seeing the entire thing was made up of people deleting images. Nice work. --The Zombiebaron 22:27, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
- Added a section (see below) for restoration requests. --Splaka 10:36, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
Well, we are still in the 11th place. And we are in the second place by number of views!!! Google can't beat us!!!! BTW, that data hasn't been updated for ages right?--Rataube 11:55, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, not in 6 hours! (updated 4 times a day). --Splaka 20:24, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
- No, I mean, I thought we didn't have views counters anymore. So we do not have counters for each page, but we still total views counter? If this is correct we are the second most visited wiki in the whole internet!!!!--Rataube 21:48, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Now that the damage has been done, time to start that UNcleanup ^_^

Askers:
- Please give a {{notorphan}} tag[1] if possible.
- Be sure to only link to the image by putting a colon before the word "Image"[2]
- If the image was only placed on a meagre appreciation page[3], its re-upload will not be performed.
Restorers:
- If given, please apply the tag (and {{Reuploaded}} of course). Any blue image links have probably been restored (dur).

Thanks for the restoration.
Sorry for not being more explicit, however, I simply followed examples of the restored image requests which were unsigned, and had no other details. For what it's worth it appears in Third World
As I explained to another admin, I don't know how to read other peoples minds´ and since there are no instructions I did the best I could. (Suggestion, why not specify what you want in the introduction so that other user might also comply?)-- at me 17:48, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

- I'm afraid I can't do that, Dave. Or Frinko... Who-ever you non-signers are... I have had a lengthy discussion with other authoritive figures, and it has been decided that re-uploading will not be done for people who merely wish to rescue orphaned images (which is basicly what that particlar page does)... If you liked the images that much, I'm sure you'll have done what I do when I see SUPER-DOOPER ones, namely save them to a local drive. ^_^

- Just use: Uncyclopedia:QuickVFD
===Image:Bertguns.jpg vs Image:Sesame.jpg===
These are identical images; one needs to be removed. I submitted Bertguns & don't care if it's removed; it is not an original image - was taken from the EvilBert website. I'm sure this that is why its nomination for highlighting failed (BTW if you keep Bertguns it's probably best to remove the VFP template). In any case whichever image is deleted, I would hope that the admin doing the deleting substitutes the identical image for the one deleted in all of the articles that link to what will then be the deleted image. --Naughtius Maximus F@H Woof!
