It is a usually found in the form of small shiny spheres of a dark beige color, the color being caused by all of the accumulated spent bassoon reeds that make up the bulk of bassoonite. Bassoonite has a Moh hardness scale of 5.0 and has been shown to cause cancer in other instrument players.

Discovery and Early Use[edit | edit source]

Bassoonite was first discovered in the 5th century BC, and was at first thought to be a mystical object because of the way it would burst into flame when friction was applied to it. Although used for some time by hunters as a fail-safe fire starter, it eventually fell out of fashion in the 2nd century after the discovery of Violendium, which (when pure) burns explosivly when exposed to sheet music and smolders at all other times.
