Forum:Poo Lit Ideas
A extremely gr8 idea would be for an article about The Flying Dutchman. As an example, you could call Superman the Flying Dutchman. --Iamcon 08:47, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
I'm thinking about trying my hand at writing an article for the PLS contest. I want to try for the Best Article category, but every idea I've had so far has already been written. Can anyone think of a topic that would make a humorous article that the site is missing? Just looking for some ideas. -- Sir C Holla | CUN 00:10, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
I hate to give this one away, but hey, I'll get another one tomorrow: job hunting. Let the hilarity ensue, and remember the acorn it came from.--Shandon 01:00, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- oohhhh, and you're busy hacking on a resume article. That's priceless. Anyway, being on the lookout for patterns of behavior, I have noted that many VFH articles have a topic that strikes a common chord in folks wherever they may be from. (Where Bouncy Castle fits in is beyond me, but somehow it does).--Shandon 01:02, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- and also, Dance Like No One is Watching has great potential. I mean, who is No One? Why is it watching you? Is it Santa? Dance, beeatch!
- Just from my own "private" list, I see a need for articles on fragrances named after athletes (maybe call it "How To:Smell Like a Jock"), boom car laws, game shows (or maybe Wikipedia (game show)), and Charles Barkley. Also, we don't have an article on Ahura Mazda, which is the Zoroastrian name for God (after a fashion), though it would help to have some understanding of that particular religion, or maybe to own a Mazda 626... I also thought about writing one on Pliny the Neglected Middle Child, but I never started it. During my "Cthulhu phase" (which might not be over yet) I thought about writing an article on Non-Euclid, a contemporary of Euclid who consistently disagreed with everything Euclid came up with, "simply to be a jerk." Never started that either.
Let's see, what else... We also don't have articles on Ptolemy or Madame Blavatsky, and I think the article on Hermaphrodites got huffed during Forest Fire Week - that seems like it oughta be a can't-miss topic, but people always manage to find a way, I guess! c • > • cunwapquc? 03:48, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- Special:Wantedpages is a place to look, too... maybe. I guess...--<<>> 03:56, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- Oops, I forgot one - this would be more of a rewrite, but during Forest Fire Week we lost Sudden Death Twister, which despite being a stub had been around for over a year, and had also been a link in Making up Oscar Wilde quotes practically since, like, Day One. Someone really ought to take a stab at that one, if only for the sake of tradition. (Also Sockey, but that got added much later and probably ought to be excised.) c • > • cunwapquc? 04:29, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- I think I just had a revelation. Right after posting that, the idea struck me. Instead of making the page about hermaphrodites, I'm going to make it about a Greek God... Hermaphrodite. Pronounced "Her-maph-ro-dite-ee." There's a Greek God called Aphrodite, get it? I think this is gonna be great. Thanks for the inspiration, Some user. I shall start it now. -- Sir C Holla | CUN 06:29, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- There's indeed a Greek godess called Aphrodite. And also a greek god called Hermes. That's where the word actually comes from, combination of god and godes, male and female.---Asteroid B612 (aka Rataube) - Ñ 18:58, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Re: "Also, we don't have an article on Ahura Mazda, which is the Zoroastrian name for God (after a fashion), though it would help to have some understanding of that particular religion, or maybe to own a Mazda 626" - Some User
- well you can do both - own a mazda and get a basic idea about "ahura mazda." I'll create a redirect, ahura mazda --> mazda, straightaway. there's also Zoroaster which could also do with a redirect from zoroastrianism. both articles are well conceived with great pics and nice formatting but hardly funny - unable to play with the ambiguity behind "mazda" without slippingf into ludicrous unfunniness. there's also Haoma: an article i created a week or so ago. i think all these "iran" related articles should have a category. i'll try brushing up these articles and making a category for them. Also, what did you mean by "name for a god after a fashion?" couldn't follow. -- mowgli 07:12, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- At one point, User:Prettiestpretty and I were going to do a Zoroaster quotes page, but I could only come up with one decent gag (which you can probably guess in one or two tries). And, of course, I'm not really doing much these days anyway, and since PP's on maternity leave now, I guess that idea is a non-starter. Maybe someday, though! Oh, and I said "God," not "a god" - and "after a fashion" simply refers to the idea that while Ahura Mazda handles the same omnipotent/omniscient role as the Judeo-Christian God, the two God-concepts are still quite different (in so far as Ahura Mazda comprises numerous minor deities who are all manifestations of Him, whereas the Judeo-Christian God's various "helpers" — Jesus, the angels, Tammy Faye Bakker, etc. — are not thought of in quite that way). So it's not a direct correlation, correct? Let me know me if I'm wrong! I probably am! c • > • cunwapquc? 07:29, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- you are absolutely right. zoroastrianism was like at the edge of this-side and that-side religions and the ambiguous role of ahura mazda as the one and only God while also being a redirect from other gods, or yazatas, like mithra et al was perhaps the cesspool for judeo-christian thoughts to spring from (the hellenists, otoh, took the pantheon aspect of this ancient persian thought - or the persians borrowed it from them, whatever, ahura mazda is zeus - to it's own logical conclusion, viz too many gods, too much madness, dead-end and expired link). i mention mithra 'cos
- mithraism was a lesser greco-roman religion extant in those days,
- Mitrais also a god in the hindu or vedic pantheon, and
- maitreya is also a prominent avatar of the buddha (notice the influence of zoroastrian pantheon-ism on a supposedly monotheistic or godless religion like buddhism - fall outs of interactions on the silk route) that appears even today in japanese buddhism (that's a long distance to cover -- isn't it?).
- so everything cross-linked back then (or even back then, forget now). so that's that. sorry for the gratuitous lecture on monotheism and zoology.-- mowgli 08:41, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- Mithra, Mithra... oh yeah! I know 'im. He's the guy those Tolkeinesque dwarves are always looking for. They want to make armor or something out of him. Tell him he's safe as long as he stays above ground, near deep water, and/or doesn't wear leg-resticting clothing. --The King In Yellow (Talk to the Dalek.) 18:12, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Quick reminder: you cannot submit collaborative efforts to the Poo Lit Suprise. Any images posted by others may not be included with your own work in the Poo Lit Suprise. If you wish to add an image someone else produced AFTER the PLS, however, you are free to do so, as I did with Yahoo after the first competition (incidentally, that picture got my article featured! Woo!).--<<>> 12:57, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
So, I just remember that I had started a bunch of articles but never finished. Of course, you can't just finish them and submit them, but you're welcome to use the titles/ideas... I think. Anyway, here they are, God knows I'm not gonna write 'em, so take advantage if you'd like... Neologism, Proper Journalism, Animal Refugees, and International Pat on the Back Day (Actually a friend of mine's idea that I was gonna work on for him, right before I lost all of my comedic abilities). t o m p k i n s blah. ﺞوﻦ וףה ՃՄ ண்ஸ ފއހ วอฏม +տ trade websites 04:33, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
