I'm having a bit of a formatting problem. I've been under the assumption that the pages look the same to everyone and apparently browser width will control how far the text will reach down a page, therefore, any long mural is doomed to look screwed up (too long or short) unless everyone uses the same browser width. Is there some magical HTML way to auto-vary the mural length based on who's viewing the page with whatever browser width?--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  11:56, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

I've noticed this as well. While some things look magnificent on my computer, some people complain it looks unreadable or screwed up, and vice versa. -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 12:01, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
To test how others may see it, you can use Ctrl - and Ctrl + (only works on Mozilla Firefox though, I think). -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 12:03, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
I've just stretched my browser by pulling the corner to mimic the effect of everyone with cinema monitors to see what they see. I'll your shortcut as well. I think I can make the cigarette mural stop at the second to last paragraph for me and finish flush at the bottom for the people with color TV sets and Tony Jacklin golf clubs.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  12:12, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
I think you can also fix it by using separate cigarette images. -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 12:27, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
Tried that already. Too finicky that way. I've just made it so that narrow viewers have the mural stop at "city that doesn't sleep" (and I indented everything after) and wide screen should be flush at the bottom or damn close.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  12:30, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Safe to say

That any page with a decent amount of images gets uglier the wider you view it. When I stretch the actual article viewing area, minus the Uncyclopedia Nav sidebar, to fill my screen, that appears to be the threshold for width while the entire browser from edge to edge on my monitor represents what the little people are viewing.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  13:24, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, that's about the size of it. Those with large screens and the more esoteric resolutions (like me) will still see something different (I still get whitespace) but there's only so much you can do. The vast array of possible screen set-ups means your page is likely to look dodgy on at least some of them. --UU - natter UU Manhole.gif 14:49, Feb 25
Don't worry about it. Remember - people that do things differently to you are wrong and as such can be ignored. It's what being human is all about. Rabbi Techno Icons-flag-gb.png kvetch Icon rabbi.gif Contribs Foxicon.png FOXES 14:51, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
I think UU has about Ctrl -- compared to my settings which approximately match with DrStrange's. -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 15:50, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
I think it can be fixed by removing the last 'complete' cigarette and putting the crushed one separately at the epilogue. -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 15:54, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
OK, little Dr Strange just finished his nap and had a little dream about how to fix this whole sordid thingy. If I indent the entire article and use HTML section titles instead of level 3 headers, THEN use solo cigarette files, I think I can make it look roughly uniform from either view.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  16:04, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
But only if I make the image file the exact width of a single indent.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  21:47, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
You can always consider what I proposed a little earlier. -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 00:11, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
The snip of one cig on the bottom of the mural? My view has it ending two paragraphs up right now.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  00:15, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Honestly

Raise The Roof!

I wouldn't get too concerned Doc. It looks much better now than it did, when there were (for me) four cigarettes and the butt after the end of the text. Now it at least looks intentional. But then, my resolution is very large and my browser is maximised. So you can't please everyone. IronLung 04:51, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Aw, yeah. Kick it! My rez-o-loo-shun is large, my mohn-ittahz in charge, and my browsa (what?) my browsa (yeah!) my browsa is max to the max to the micky micky max-ih-myzed! All the ladies in the place...all the ladies in the place say "Browsa!" ("Browsa!). Break it down now! MO MC 05:31, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
I have a problem with being meticulous and anal. Lately, I've been trying to learn how to be brief and spit out one of those quick and funny articles that do so well on VFH but that new philosophy got put on hold for Private Eye. At least this experience will eliminate a lot of wasted time in the future and I'll just make left side mural images the same pixel width as one or two indents from the beginning. Of course, now it's time to work on something completely different.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  09:11, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Next Silly Question

What is the default font used on the articles here?--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  09:32, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

I think Arial or something. -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 09:35, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
Yep, looks like Arial condensed 12 or 14pt. --DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  09:49, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
The default font isn't set by the wiki, it's set by the browser. Also, the way it is now, I see 5 and a half cigarettes after the text finishes. The easiest way to do it would be to use one cigarette image per paragraph, or whatever you want, then use a table to position it all. Spang talk 23:59, 26 Feb 2009
Thank you sir. That's the "magical" method I was probably looking for. Straight-up, I am way behind the majority when it comes to writing HTML code so while I know what you're telling me to do (I see and manipulate tables all the time here) I don't have the slightest clue how to create this from scratch for an article. Making the image files the same width as one indent and using the multiple cig files instead of the big mural will work but of course it's a method of evading my lack of technical expertise.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  11:01, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Mr Cheap

OK, I just finished fixing Private Eye so that nobody should see more than a cig butt underneath the last paragraph, providing just a sliver of white space for artistic effect.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  11:40, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

I think it looks good now, with anykind of settings. -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 11:44, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
Ahhh, that's better. --UU - natter UU Manhole.gif 11:48, Feb 27

I' d like to mention "The Answer to Life, The Universe, and Everything". How do you perceive this article? -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 11:44, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

You changed the background recently? Damn, that's impressive. You have no idea what kind of shit I would be doing if I only knew what the fuck I was doing.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  11:50, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
You ready for a nom?--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  11:52, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
I won't object, but it had a review once and it said that it looked all fucked up and almost unreadable, so I guess it may look somewhat different on other people's screens. -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 13:06, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, annoying people like me with odd screen resolutions, for a start, I'm sorry to report (although I see what you're aiming for with a quick resize of my browser window). Some of it is still close to unreadable, what with the red and orange text on the image (the third column of the "demoted answers" column being an excellent example). Finally, while interestingly presented and so forth, it's essentially a list of links to other articles, is it not? Also, let's say it were to get voted for highlight - how would you get it to look good on the front page? --UU - natter UU Manhole.gif 13:22, Feb 27
Well yes, what I'm basically attempting is to make a list on a disambiguation page look like something beautiful. -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 17:17, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
When I change the browser setting some stuff stretches wide while other stuff stays relatively fixed. I still find it inspirational though.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  13:30, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the support. -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 17:15, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
I love that page, though the text color makes it hard to read. I do think that instead of presenting it as possible meanings of The Answer, you should present it as all required and essential parts of The Answer (in a deadpan "it's so simple, really") sort of way. Just a thought. -OptyC Sucks! Icons-flag-us.png CUN17:57, 27 Feb
I have considered something like that in the past, but it's still supposed to be a disambiguation page. -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 21:14, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
So? An unambiguas disambiguation page is very apropro for Uncyc. -OptyC Sucks! Icons-flag-us.png CUN21:18, 27 Feb
Well, I'd like to leave it at "may, or may not[1], refer to" but you're always welcome to try out your idea. -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 22:09, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
I was thinking about bringing some variation in the text color, maybe a different color for each section. However, I'm afraid I don't have the time to put a lot of effort into this for the moment. -Sockpuppet of an unregistered user 21:12, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
I'm a former pressman and I know how to find HTML color codes socky! I can give it a revertable shot.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  21:16, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

New Format Challenge

In Scatomancy, the "colors" section has a problem with the color swatches/names/information lining up properly. Anybody? This one is on VFH right now.--DRStrangesig5.png Sherman.png Fingertalk.png  20:12, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
