Hi! Remember how we used to be hosted on this site called Wikia? Waaaaay back in the hazy mists of last week? Good times, right? Well, it occurred to me that, even though we moved, some of you are still doing things the way you used to back on The Site Which Shall Be Named No More. And this is good, this is great. The point of the move was that all of you could keep doing things the way you were doing them, but more freely, and without having to worry about some corporate shill telling you not to use the word "fuck" at some random point in the future. So good on you. You are all stubborn, filthy-mouthed perverts and I love you for it.

I have just ONE tiny problem though. See this?

[http://en.uncyclopedia.co/w/index.php?title=Uncyclopedia_is_the_worst&action=historysubmit&diff=748518&oldid=748500 that time when Hardwick Fundlebuggy ruined "Uncyclopedia is the worst" by adding funny to it].

You know what that's called? It's called a "hard-coded link". What's wrong with it? Nothing. Except ...it's not future-proof. See, when y'all were doing that back on The Site Which...Etc., it meant that if we ever moved, I (or somebody else) would have 58,792 HARD-CODED LINKS TO POINTING TO WIKIA to fix. And hey, lookit! We moved! AND NOW I HAVE 58,792 HARD-CODED LINKS TO FIX! GODDAMNIT!

What's the solution? {{Querylink}}. How's it work? Simple: ya take this link:

[http://en.uncyclopedia.co/w/index.php?title=Uncyclopedia_is_the_worst&action=historysubmit&diff=748518&oldid=748500 that time when Hardwick Fundlebuggy ruined "Uncyclopedia is the worst" by adding funny to it]

and you turn it into this:

{{Querylink|Uncyclopedia is the worst|qs=action=historysubmit&diff=748518&oldid=748500|that time when Hardwick Fundlebuggy ruined "Uncyclopedia is the worst" by adding funny to it}}

See? It's pretty simple. First you type {{Querylink| , then you add the article's title! Then you add a pipe ("|") and "qs=", then you add that stuff you see after the question mark! (What's that stuff? It's called a "query string" technically, but you don't need to know what that does. Just make sure to omit the "title=blah" if you see it.) Lastly, you can optionally add another pipe ("|"), and some text that you want to use for the link. In this case, it's "that time when Hardwick Fundlebuggy ruined "Uncyclopedia is the worst" by adding funny to it".

that time when Hardwick Fundlebuggy ruined "Uncyclopedia is the worst" by adding funny to it

Yes, it may look harder, but in the long run, it makes it easier for me. Or whatever other janitor you've assigned to the job. If our domain ever changed again in the future (God forbid), the wiki wouldn't need to know what its new domain was. BECAUSE QUERYLINK TAKES CARE OF THAT AUTOMAGICALLY.

TL;DR: DON'T USE HARD LINKS, USE {{Querylink}}, YOU FUCKERS!

Any questions???? ~ BB ~ (T) Icons-flag-us.pngThu, Jan 10 '13 10:41 (UTC)

I say this calls for an unnecessary vote!

Clickable image links

Somewhere back around MediaWiki 1.14, a link= parameter was added for images so that they could be used as clickable links. Many old signatures did ugly things like [http://en.uncyclopedia.co/wiki/User_talk:Carlb http://images.uncyc.org/en/thumb/Wiki.png/16px-Wiki.png] just to get a clickable image like Wiki.png. Oh look, a clickable potato in my sig - which could have been created just as easily as [[Image:Wiki.png|16px|link=user talk:carlb]]. In some cases, extensions like <imagemap> were used just to get a clickable link for something as minor as an unne.ws icon in a template. No need now. Please don't replace this sort of external link with more external links, just link= ...whatever... - Carlb Wiki.png 15:13, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Yes. What the ^^man^^ said. I have had to fix 30 different sigs that use hard-coded image links. Stupid. Stupid. STUPID! ~ BB ~ (T) Icons-flag-us.pngThu, Jan 10 '13 21:28 (UTC)
