There has been a massive ping problem, I think it’s template pings, but I don’t know what it is. This should be in help desk but Cassie wants it here. I think the root of the problem is users who use custom date formats in their signatures (like Cat the Colourful, Cassie, and Zana Dark). The MediaWiki extension that powers the notification system (Echo) requires that, for a ping to succeed, the edit must contain a ~~~~, and as such pings from someone who signs their comment as {{User:Cassie/s|~~~~~}} won't go through. (I have also un-nosubst'ed my signature to avoid problems.) JJP_Master 11:44, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

As you guys may remember, I have also had this problem for a very long time. It seems to come and go. Sometimes I get pings, but usually I don't. MrX blow me 13:55, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

@Hipponias: I also have a sig template but I do have the ping problem. So I doubt that simply removing sig templates will solve anything. MrX blow me 16:51, 13 April 2021 (UTC)

Gale5050, demanding everyone to remove their template sigs because of a ping problem is just overreacting. While this is an issue, having template code mess up discussion pages is a lot worse. ~ Hipponias^CUN - Talk - Contribs - Articles  16:54, 13 April 2021 (UTC)

That's probably true if a signature is as long as yours, but mine is ~200 bytes, and plenty of users on Wikipedia have longer signatures. I'll take an example - wp:User:SQL. I understand your concern, maybe we could entirely get rid of these "time parameter" signatures and implement a limit. – Preceding unsigned comment added by Gale5050 (talk • contribs)

You're gonna have to ask the sysadmins. All i know is that the ping system is broken, and has been since the last time we updated. 12:11, 27 September 2023 (UTC)

This would not forbid custom signatures, but it would forbid it from being in a template and make the code leak out.

•  Strong against. This is completely ignoring the practical purposes of having sig templates. The solution to the ping problem is to fix the ping problem, not create a separate problem.   First though, we would need to big Lyrithriya to add one, and she has had some reluctance adding certain things, so I wouldn't be so confident in her ability to do it.

My new proposal is to forbid signatures from containing any more then 255 bytes, and to disallow "time-invoking-signatures".

•  For. These "time invoking signatures" can be disruptive, make it harder to find the time, and make it so we can't have any type of Lowercase Sigmabot III around here.
