Don't know if you caught the reply on my Talk Page.......but anyhoo....I do think that Noel Coward, Arthur C. Clarke, Thomas Jefferson, et al, would benefit some of your excellent portrait work, so that they at least appear to be a part of the same section. By all means add to Noel Coward, the more the merrier as he was often heard to say. -- Sir Mhaille

- I dunno, Mhaille... What's the point, if they're all just going to get wiped anyway? I've already spent a ton of time on these things, and the idea that all that time would be completely wasted is really kind of depressing.
- The fact is, even the few people who've noticed my work on these pages are probably under a serious misapprehension about my motives. I didn't start fixing up the quotes pages because I have some special affinity towards them, or because I enjoy "making up quotes"; I did it because those pages were an embarrassment, and they were actually getting steadily worse. And, stupidly, I thought they were also somehow sacrosanct, that the people who made them saw them as the heart and soul of this website, and would never want them to just go away en masse. I guess I was dead wrong about that, eh?
- I am sorry to you in particular, Mhaille, for not sprucing up Arthur C. Clarke's page earlier on; I'll go ahead and fix that one up a bit, because it's your page and you've always been swell to me. But the others that I haven't touched can just go bye-bye as far as I'm concerned. I hope (for your sake at least) that Noel Coward's survives, but frankly, he's not someone I would have chosen - he was too much like Oscar Wilde in temperament, so unless you're going to do something totally off-the-wall with him, like cast him as a beer-guzzlin', chainsaw-wieldin', pickup-truck-drivin' redneck who just happens to be the greatest English playwright of the 20th century, I guess I don't see what good it's going to do us... at least until there's some assurance that it will survive. - I've said it before and I'll say it again, democracy just doesn't work, especially on a Wiki. :) I'd like to think we have a good mix of highbrow and lowbrow humour, but if we're honest the lowbrow stuff wins out every time. It breaks my heart when something clever and hysterically funny is "vandalised" with the usual "X is a big gay" contributions. I do think that quite a few contributors and a few admins are clued up to fighting "that sort of thing". The fight continues....
- With regard to Noel Coward, I think with the total domination on the site by Oscar Wilde, I wanted to have someone bitter at been "second best". A Buzz Aldrin to Oscar's Neil Armstrong. I also like his genuinely acidic real-life quotes.
- Anyhoo, I appreciate the work that has gone into the Quotes section, and I will do anything within my power to make sure that the quality ones remain intact. I'd like to lead us all now in a few verses of We Shall Overcome........ -- Sir Mhaille

- Just to add to this thread, I never said democracy worked either, here or anywhere else. The main thing you have to avoid is power-abuse, and if democracy helps stop that, then it's a good thing. The problem with wikis isn't democracy or non-democracy, it's chaos at the top. (Isn't it?) Other than that, I agree completely. But lowbrow humor only wins out because the people doing it outnumber us by, I dunno, 50 to 1? I'm not sure what can be done about that either, but I also agree with Carlb that there are a ton of Oscar Wilde quotes scattered about the tops of hundreds, maybe thousands of articles that are lowering the quality of those articles and should just be excised. Liberal application of the "Squeegeewarrior" template to user pages as a reward for removing significant numbers of them might not help all that much, but it would be a start, at least. --Some user 18:11, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
- Love the Arthur C. Clarke image (think the whole section is starting to look a lot more structured and organised).....when I have time away from deleting crap I'll spend a while working on both him and Noel, and a few of the others. Hopefully some of the borderline ones can be "saved" too. -- Sir Mhaille (talk to me)
