This is quite odd to me. I went off on a nice 5-day backpacking trip, leaving a gestating article behind all snuggled up safe on the servers. When I got back it was just...gone. No sign of it in the VFD or QVFD records, either...not that I can see, anyways. The article, Laura Ingalls Wilder, really had a lot of time and work put into it even though it was unfinished. Geez. Can any of you smart admin types explain what happened? Famine? Brad? Tompkins? Anyone? ----OEJ 02:50, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Guys, I think the neuralizer is not working again... :) - Rougethebat.gifAdmiral Enzo Aquarius-Dial the Gate SonicLivesPicture.png 02:54, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
See here, it seems Laura was biten by a Zombie. Strange, you would think admins zand zombies wouldn't attack WIPs by cripled users with only one eye and a WotM award.---Asteroid B612B612.jpg (aka Rataube) - Ñ 03:10, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
Page is back. And all I have to say is that zombiebaron sucks at clearing WIPs. As in deleting expired ones regardless of content, even several pages long ones. Back in my day we removed the tag if it could stand on its own two feet without it, and moved it to userspace if not. Spang talk 03:24, 29 Jul 2007
Thanks very, very much, Spang. I was crying really hard, and even my mummy couldn't help. (My mummy is a cousin of Tutankhamen I got from a diseased Turk in Zagreb, and he's kind of shabby with his wrappings coming off around the left leg but he's quite nice really. Quiet and well-behaved and all.) In future I will eschew the WIP template and use a template of my own devising...I had forgotten the delete clause. OK, here's a rough draft of the template. The user-specified fields are article title (in this example just "This template") and author name. The comments-and-suggestions link leads to the author's talk page. The template currently resides at User:One-eyed_Jack/NotDoneYet. It does not put the article in the WIP catgory, obviously. ----OEJ 16:22, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

This template is still unfinished. The author, One-eyed Jack, is working on it.

Comments and suggestions are welcome here.

Put some silly disclaimer on it, it needs more 'oomf' to convince those that your template is truthful. :) - Rougethebat.gifAdmiral Enzo Aquarius-Dial the Gate SonicLivesPicture.png 03:33, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
Disclaimer? It doesn't need a disclaimer! It has traffic cones. P.M., WotM, & GUN, Sir Led Balloon Baloon.gif(Tick Tock) (Contribs) 05:28, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Change to the template

I was alerted that a well-meaning user added tags to put articles using this template into the Work In Progress category. That is the opposite of this template's intent. Some admins delete WIP-tagged articles without even looking at them. This tag is intended to be used on substantial, strong articles which have just not quite put their shoes on and gone off to live their lives.

I removed the WIP category from the template. Zombiebaron, if you have a different problem with this template, speak now. ----OEJ 15:36, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

As an aside, I think this is a rather ungood idea. No offense, but it rather defeats the purpose of the WIP template. The point of it is to set the clock winding down. I trust you with it, but I fear that the presence of this template will (eventually) lead to others doing this, users with less integrity than yourself. I think that many would prefer that you do it in your userspace, which is basically the same thing. But what do I know?-Sir Ljlego, GUN VFH FIYC WotM SG WHotM PWotM AotM EGAEDM ANotM + (Talk) 01:34, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
Yeah. Again, I apologise again OEJ. I had noticed this forum topic, but I hadn't noticed your intention to not add the WIP category. Anyway, I personally prefer userspace construction for articles (or, in my case, MS Word construction). However, the easiest solution to the problem is for admins to not delete half-decent incomplete WIPed articles written by registered users, and move them to their userspace instead. Some admins are already doing this, we just need the others to do the same. Icons-flag-au.png Sir Cs1987 UOTM. t. c 03:43, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
Don't worry about it, Cs1987. I disagree to some extent with "setting the clock ticking". If I'm unable to work on an article for awhile -- vacation, family troubles, work -- then the standard WIP automatically puts the article up for deletion. It something is in a deletion queue then someone will most likely delete it: admins are more or less human, and will make assumptions. Yet I would like to be able to inform readers that I have not finished with something. I could just put a message at the bottom, I suppose. Or just put a Wiki table identical to the template into articles where I want to use it. For that matter, the template can remain in my userspace but remain unlisted in category:temlates, making it less easily available.
So it's moot: I can just put --
This is a WORK IN PROGRESS! I'm not done yet.
-- on the pages I want. That has the same effect and same message as the template in my userspace. No difference. The other thing -- working on articles in userspace or offline -- is good practice, but for some reason I often start articles in mainspace, usually on the spur of the moment. It's a bad habit I really ought to avoid. But I seem to do it anyway... ----OEJ 12:25, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
