Well I've been reading about all the drama that has been going on lately, admins leaving, noobs who think they are evil psychological murderer people running around like headless chickens screaming "OMG FAMINE I HAET U" and the Euroipods thing flaring up again, and I think it's just time to take a step back and compare the community of Uncyc six months ago and the community today.

I haven't been around lately, and it's not like I'm being a doomsayer and claiming that Uncyc is falling apart and will die, I'm just saying that it just won't ever be the same again if we're not careful. When trolls from ED or something come and try and incite a war against Uncyclopedia from another site, it normally fails. However, it still does damage by creating doubt, policy changes and internal conflict in general. And whether Uncyc recovers or not, the community won't. The admins that recently left; will the community ever be the same without them? No.

But it's not at that point yet, we're not quite desperate enough to begin cutting our losses and salvaging what we have left, we can still rebuild and make this site great - we have a potentially fantastic community, but I think we're not doing enough to indulge them with the community spirit enough. I mean, I logged on to IRC for the first time in months and I looked at the userbar and thought "Holy shit, that's a lot of people. Who are they all?".

So. What do we do? Well, I don't know about you but I haven't got a fucking clue. However, that doesn't stop me from brainstorming a bit, maybe we should do some kind of community project? A series of articles or an entire category as the focus of the community, sort of like the old Colonization projects except the articles would all be relevant to reach other, it would be a one-off thing to help everyone get to know each other and it would be given more of an emphasis on teamwork (somehow). Well, that was just an idea, but if someone could tweak it or come up with something better entirely, then we might just have a basis to launching Uncyc back into another golden age... the way it was when I first registered.

Well...

  • I am one of the relative newcomers, I'll arrive somewhere march 2006. I will be Dutch, I might probably be considered old flesh since I was bourne in the year of our Leard 1957 (at least that's what the birth certificate says). And frankly my dear, I don't give a damn. There is just no right way to run an operation such like this. I get my kicks from this webby thing, I fight the more harsh ones of the admins with great relish (I particulary enjoy hating the more unreasonable ones), and I florish. So in my opinion, there's nothing wrong with this wiki thingy and if ever I perceive some such condition to arise, I'll just move on, or quit bothering. -- di Mario 21:13, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

I was thinking along similar lines, strangely enough, about the need for community cohesion. I think a great idea would be several large collaborative projects in which users old and new, great and not-so-great could come together to write a bunch of articles. Doesn't Wikipedia do a lot of things in that regard, with group projects and the like? Whatever they do seems to work well at building a community. I think the main problem is, people can function on this site as complete loners, if they're so inclined. That's OK, but it's not much fun, really. Somehow we need to get more involved in each other's shit, that way when trouble starts, we'll be interested and concerned instead of just cynical and perturbed (as I, honestly, was.) Remember, we'll all friendly here. Except for the ones who aren't. --Sir ENeGMA (talk) GUN WotM PLS 21:15, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

For those who feel inclined towards a community effort, I guess I overlooked that trait in my previous rant. On an intellectual level, I am able to understand that some exponents of mankind actually feel more comfortable working together as a team, or if not as a team, then towards a common goal. I mean, I've seen it happen myself on numerous occasions under commercial pressure, so apparently some of you are being paid to achieve your goals along the guidelines that that business model sets. However, you teamsters must in turn acknowledge that some of mankind is composed of brilliant loners, and that everybody should go out of their way to create the circumstances under which these brilliant loners would be free and unecumbered to live their brilliant lonely lives to the maxx. And I don't see enough of that, not. In short: group effort: OK. Leave room for individuals: double-a-plus-OK-minitrue-approved. -- di Mario 21:35, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

When I make a mistake and piss someone off, I try to apologize and rectify the error. Maybe we can try that. --Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 21:17, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

I was thinking of something like a general collaboration for improvement of the wiki: more reviewing pee review and reefer desk, and collaboration on articles that are good ideas but have terrible implementations(some NRVs, Rewrites, VFDed articles et cetera. --~ Tophatsig.png

I havent really been feeling the community spirit lately, mostly since I made my opposition clear to Wikia's buying us out. Some, not all, just sort of dimiss it as hating Chronarion, or useless rants, but I honestly feel that some of the changes Wikia has given us arent really helping the community here, and it is a bit disheartening to see that what I say gets twisted into just being some hateful message. This probably isnt a reason you feel the community is sort of incohesive, but its nonetheless the sort of personal reason that I have personally drifted away from the community. I do miss the way things used to feel, we were setting our own course and it was being headed by some cool guys you could get to know and enjoy. I just dont feel this anymore, and I dont know that it can be brought back. ~Sir Rangeley Icons-flag-us.png GUN WotM UotM EGA +S (talk) 21:38, 5 December 2006 (UTC)
We all stand around in a big circle and do what? If only a PLS would arrive to save us all. -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb.png (talk to me)

  • I agree 100%. Everyone needs to step back a bit. As you all may have realized, while I am a long time member (I'd say one of the originals, or close to it) I don't spend too much time posting here. I check Uncyc nearly everyday, and I lurk the boards a lot, but I rarely get involved in things these days, instead I prefer to occasionally do some adminning and writing. However, I've noticed a lot of problems flaring up. Remember, this is just a website, and it's a very community-run website at that. I think that everyone should calm down, lets try to restore some balance. I've been watching what's happening from above it all, not being super-involved in the community recently, and I think everyone should calm down and stop worrying so much. There is too much admin drama right now, along with conflicts of ideals. I also think that the Admin being allpowerful mentality we have should be moved away from a bit, although I see that already happening to some extent. --Maj Sir Insertwackynamehere Icons-world.gif CUN VFH VFP Bur.
