What is the best edition of photoshop that won't burn your wallet like cs3? --Nordamus Icons-flag-us.png (blab • crap) 17:26, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Unless you have a need for really sophisticated production facilities, use Paint Shop Pro at I think $99. Or even the Open Source GIMP. It will do it all for 99% of users. And, I speak as someone who owns Photoshop CS3, all paid up. Pieface 17:42, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
I think that GIMP has a rather crappy interface along with most other image manipulation programs. Krita and Firworks have a little better of an interface if you want to work with them. Pixel is also rather cheap last time I heard, and it's a pretty damned good photoshop clone for the most part. ~ Tophatsig.png 2/09/2007 @ 17:54

MS paint all the way! Or, if you're not 1337 enough for that, you could use paint.net, which is also free. Spang talk 06:34, 02 Sep 2007
I second that. Paint.NET is the only application I use for image editing. -- Mitch Icons-flag-au.png 06:08, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
I got a free copy of Photoshop elements with my Wacom tablet. I dunno if it's any good, as I don't want to learn anything new, so I stuck to whateveritwas that I used before. It makes a nice coaster, though. Futuristic. Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 19:32, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
Convince a student to buy the academic version for you. Problem solved. --Algorithm 06:47, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
  • PaintshopPro 4.1. You might find a CD at garage sales, computer recycling centers, or nailed to the head of a cyborg kitten. It's simple, clean, installs in a heartbeat, and doesn't give you 50,000 cumbersome tools you will never ever need. ----OEJ 02:56, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
I've installed Paint.NET, and it's pretty cool. This brings up another question, however: What plug-ins should I install? --Nordamus Icons-flag-us.png (blab • crap) 02:22, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
I use GIMP. I can teach you its ways, if you want. I made this with it. Then again, Mhaille and RadicalX have both done incredible things with the 'Shop. It all depends on your willingness to pirate/steal from someone. Photoshop is very complicated, and GIMP is a little hard to learn. Both are very powerful. Paint Shop Pro is also pretty powerful, but all of these good editing tools have one common thread: a rather large learning curve. Generally, more power = more to harness. Yeah, that's a good observation. My general feeling is that for most jobs you just need selection tools, sharpening-blurring, color/hue and lightness/darkness adjustment, and drawing tools for adding text and lines. I find that for me, most Uncyc jobs can be done with a relatively uncomplicated program -- therefore I favor the 10-year-old version of PSP. I have Teh Gimp (which I have not used much) and a recent version of PSP (which I use regularly) if I want to do complex operations, but as Ljlego writes program power is in this case paid for by a steeper learning curve for the user. I haven't tried Paint.net, I guess I will give it a go. ----OEJ 16:56, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
For proper editing only photoshop is the right choice. It has the best power-nogrief ratio of all other packages. And the cheapest ? The pirated version ofcourse. Just pirate the fucker. -_Vosnul 22:24, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
