Laurusnobilus

I just reverted two recent edits made by User:Qscgu9-bot which removed a sizable portion of San Francisco, California and Fish. Not sure if this is an error or not. MadMax 08:37, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

de.uncyclopedia.org

Hey, you can't imagine how glad I'm about having found you. You are the user who instructed a bot to work on the de.uncyclopedia.org, where his username is Laurusnobilis. If not, then ignore what I'm saying. If true, then note that this is very important. The bot Laurusnobilis was making so much trouble on the de.uncyclopedia that he got blocked today. Let me give you a list with the things we have to complain about:

• The bot inserts a Wikia-credit line into every article. We don't want that. I see no reason why it could be neccessary.
• The bot is making trouble with Interwikilinks (or call them interlanguage-links):
  • He tried to set a link to an language which does not exist or is not known by the de.uncyclopedia software, namely [[lb: ]]
  • I made an link from German "Genie" to English "Genius" what is correct, but the bot thought that the English "Genie" would be right, whereas it means "Geist" in German. The reason for the bot to make the change was the same spelling of the two different words. But to my mind this should not trick a bot, especialy because the right Interwiki link did already exist. Does the bot not trust in the changes set by humans? I changed the wrong link in the de.uncy, but as I saw in the English one it has been also set wrong by the bot. Again: [[de:Genie]] belongs to the article "Genius". The same with the other links set during the same edit, as the bot copied them from the de.uncy.
  • Another user complained also about a wrong interwikilink to [[uk: ]]-uncy, but I'm not informed about this case.

Well, the de.uncy really appreciated the work of the bot until yesterday. And I'm interested in having a helpful bot. But as long as there's nothing done about our complaints the bot will remain blocked. I will be really grateful if we could work together, as programming an own bot seems too difficult for me. I'm just hoping you can deal with my English becoming worse the later the evening. My answer

Hi, thank you for the report. Yes, I'm using the bot metawikipedia:Using the python wikipediabot, and I use the name "Laurusnobilis" in the various languages.

Wikia-credit line:

When the interwiki.py bot modify a page, it calls also the cosmetic_changes.py bot, which has recently started (for reasons unknown to me) to add the Wikia-credit line. Further investigation is required, and help is appreciated. I have some ideas to try, and if I get unblocked, and if there is a Uncyclopedia:Sandbox page in German Uncyclopedia, I can do some tests. If I get unblocked, I'm not going to regularly use the bot before the problems are solved.

This problem remains in some portions of Wikia; see the last lines of Special:Export/User:Qscgu9-bot and you'll find this rubbish appended to the export text: <div id="wikia-credits"><br /><br /><small>From [http://uncyclopedia.org Uncyclopedia], a [http://www.wikia.com Wikia] wiki.</small></div> --05:12, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Genie-Genius

The bot was manually instructed by me to do so, hence this is not a bot problem.

Any link from German "Genie" to English "Genius" is currently wrong, because English Genius is a redirect to Oscar Wilde. Please delete the link from de:Genie to en:Genius, also because otherwise others' bot will make confusion between de:Genie and Oscar Wilde.

About Genie-Genius, consider that de:Genie links also to es:Genio and it:Genio, and both in Italian and Spanish, the word "Genio" means both "en:Genie" (Aladin lamp) and "en:Genius" (intelligent person), and having all de:Genie, en:Genie, es:Genio and it:Genio linked together seems to me OK. However, although I speak both English and German, these are not my mother language. If you still consider having together de:Genie, en:Genie too bad, please feel free to go on, and to separate. Currently, the content of the article it:Genio is "en:Genie" (Aladin lamp), and the content of the article es:Genio is "en:Genius" (intelligent person). If you separate, you should do that for all these four language, otherwise next time an interwiki bot runs, it will unite again.

Partially existing languages

The reported problem is well-known, see metawikipedia:Pywikipedia bot on non-Wikimedia projects#Example: Uncyclopædia.

The Uncyclopedia does exist also in the following languages:

• bg http://bg.oxypedia.net (bg was reported to me previously)
• lb http://lb.uncyc.org
• uk http://uk.inciklopedii.org

However, the interwiki links from German Uncyclopedia to these languages don't currently work. This is a more general problem, see the discussion after Uncyclopedia:Multilingual coordination#Norwegian and the table at that page bottom. This problem should be reported, once again, to wikia:Wikia Staff.

Thanks for your answer. Anyway Genie to Genie is wrong, but on the other hand you're right, cause who cares whether an interwiki is right or wrong, as in uncy-wikis nothing is right. I personally wouldn't mind if the titles of articles don't match exactly when the topics fit, but not the other way round. But this just reveals another problem: if anybody sets a wrong interwiki it spreads through the other wikis. Normaly I only care about interwikis to en-uncyclopedia, but as for Genie I looked up in the wikipedia, and that's why I thought it:Genio fits to de:Genie whereas an Italian genie is a Jinn. Considering interwikis to redirects: in the wikipedia one can be sure that redirects are somehow substitutes, but in uncyclopedia there are often rather nonsensical redirects. That's why I sometimes set interwikilinks to redirects and not to articles.

Let me give you another example: the article en:chile got deleted some time ago and now it is a redirect to Cold. Still in other languages like es:Chile there are interwikis to en:chile. Am I right, expecting that a bot would change the interwiki in the article es:Chile form en:chile to en:Cold? I would prefer if a bot does not follow redirects to change interwikis. --Nequmodiva as 195.243.236.242 09:10, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

I run a similar 'bot on some of the non-Wikia hosted Uncyclopedia languages and yes, I've seen many of the same issues. I no longer run the bot on this wiki or on anything Wikia-hosted. The problems with every page in Wikia's downloadable XML data dumps being defaced to promote Wikia (crediting text to "(projectname), a Wikia wiki" - not the author - on the pages themselves... every page, every template, every message) have been with us for almost a year now. I have no idea why they do this, but it's certainly not in any way Laurusnobilis' fault. It is possible to run interwiki.py without using the XML dumps, but some of the other pywikipediabot scripts may use them.

The issue with Uncyclopedia being prone to containing silly or nonsensical redirects has also arisen before; en: redirects Jenna Bush to Jenna Jameson, so now (as of New Year's Eve 2007) pt: and various others do link accordingly, pt:Jenna Bush == en:Jenna Jameson. If the robot *knows* that there are two possible destinations for the same page, it would either prompt for user intervention or skip editing the page entirely. That might catch some redirected pages like the Chile nonsense (if for instance it caused fr:froid and fr:chile, two different pages, to suddenly be synonymous - and if both pages already existed there. If.) It won't catch everything.

As for missing languages? Again, that is a Wikia issue, and this has been a recurring problem at various times since at least 2006. Take the list of languages from uncyclopedia.info/wiki/Main_Page and try to paste the wiki codes here, you get a mess. The broken or wrong links include (at a minimum) bg:bn:bs:cy:et:jv:lb:lt:mk:no:ro:su:tl:uk:. Some Wikia are worse, missing half or even all of the languages. This issue was last raised here Forum:Interwiki links way back in October; the Norwegian problems are also mentioned on the multilingual co-ordination page. Short of running two or three separate bots (and configuring the ones that edit anywhere in Wikia to believe that a dozen or more of the forty-nine languages versions don't exist) I see no easy workaround. I avoid the issue by (as of mid-2006 onward) not running bots on Wikia, period.

Certainly, anyone who wants to look at the code and the issues involved is free to download a copy of pywikipediabot, gratis, from sourceforge.net - nothing to lose but your sanity. :) Better you than me! --Carlb 02:28, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
