HowTo:Stop Being a Nerd[edit source]

When reviewing this article, answer in the final comment whether you would vote for it on VFH. Your honest opinion is helpful. Just don't be brutally honest, you can lie a bit. Necropaxx (T) {~} 21:44, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Humour: 4 I was about to click the "X" button after "3.1415926535897932384626433832795% of the human population" – really large numbers aren't that funny, even if it is digits of π to emphasize sheer nerdiness. The overuse of mock-Latin is also annoying, and that's not even getting past the first paragraph. And quite honestly, I didn't find the rest of it particularly amusing either.
Concept: 5 Not an entirely stupid article, but not the most brilliant idea either. I think nerd jokes have become cliché. Some guys can really pull this stuff off – like the guy who does xkcd – but I think the best ones are more subtle, and stuff like xkcd is really written more for nerds than about them. The key to good satire is that it's written as ironic mock approval rather than blatant, flat-out condemnation.

Another thing I've noticed about good nerd jokes is that they tend to be more focused. This article sort of reminds me of Hitler or the KKK, and all those other supremacist groups – lumping everyone together and telling them all to reform. It's too general – that's also the same reason I don't find most Weird Al stuff particularly amusing. Good Star Wars jokes amuse me, although Uncyclopedia has too many these days, and most of them aren't good enough to really stand out. I kind of hesitate to admit it since I'm at least relatively in the "real world" here, but I find a lot of Linux hacker jokes amusing, even the really damning ones. (My favorites are ones about zealots like RMS – and this coming from one of those zealots himself!) And after my friend showed me the article about IB, I actually went home and printed it out, I don't think anyone's ever written a better description of me.

But the fact is that most nerd jokes like this one are far too general to be truly effective, and by now they're also rather cliché. Maybe if it were more focused I might find it amusing. And I won't deny you could be a little less offensive – I'm probably not the best person to review an article like this, even though I do believe strongly that no one is above a bit of parody or an old-fashioned reductio ad absurdum. But the thing is there's too many of these jokes, and this one really is too overly general. Not to mention, you really should remember that meta-Humor isn't always as funny as you think it is.

Prose and formatting: 5 First there's a paragraph, then
  1. list,
  2. list,
  3. another list,
  4. more lists,
  5. and even more lists!

I'll give you some credit, they aren't just a bunch of one-word type things, but there's just too damn many lists.

Images: 4 They don't really do anything for me.
Miscellaneous: 5 Even if you spend a lot of time staring at a computer screen, that doesn't mean you need glasses. Some people may just need to tweak a few settings like, say, eliminate white backgrounds.
Final Score: 23 There are some people in this world who would easily put this on VFH and not think twice about it. I am not one of them.
