I'd Like to start a vote about our new search box as I find it annoying and wondered what others thought --BonSig.png (Bonner) (Talk). 19:09, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

For

It now has a disable link, if that helps... I think it's quite useful for finding similar articles to what you're searching for. I guess it could be rather annoying for people who rely on the browser's fill feature to remember stuff they're searching for, but it's all about the readers, right? Spang talk 09:00, 03 Aug 2007

Thanks Spang :) the disable is a great help --BonSig.png (Bonner) (Talk). 22:26, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Well the point of it is that most casual readers are likely to be searching for articles, not things they've already typed. And it's a great way to attract people to read articles that have interesting names but are otherwise unlikely to ever find. But the casual readers are never going to vote here, so there's only one way this vote's going to go. I'll take it out. I could make it opt in, but that can only be done with logged in users, which kinda defeats the point. Spang talk 10:48, 03 Aug 2007

If i'm honest its a shame because it was such a good idea but its obviously the only way to go --BonSig.png (Bonner) (Talk). 23:02, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
For I like it. At least once I'd worked out what the hell you were all talking about ("Duh - but I don't see anything different...") Could be useful on the many occasions when I totally forget the exact wording of the article I'm looking for. But I did without it before, so if the wind blows away from it, then let no-one say I don't also blow. As Mayor Quimby would say. --Strange.PNG (but) Untrue  Whhhy?Whut? How? *Back from the dead* 23:33, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

  • No. The goggles. They do nothing. I tried to disable it. The disabling doesn't seem to have worked. hard refresh worked. gay. It didn't actually. Screw this damn search crap. I told you it wouldn't be a good idea. --PantsMacKenzie 22:18, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
  • Well, I've already disabled mine, but I don't think that everyone should have to go through that process. -- The Zombiebaron 22:34, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
  • It isn't useful. It isn't visually appealling. It isn't great. It's an irritating feature I had to deal with on three wikia, and all it does is piss me off because it ends up preventing you from actually going to the search page because it has to search every time you input an individual character, sometimes preventing me from even going to a page I want to go to that isn't linked anywhere. Disable the damn thing permanantly. I can't imagine anyone actually liking the thing. It's like Pac-Man for the Atari 2600 - annoying and poor, but only Pac-Man is more fun, and doesn't screw you up when you're trying to do recon through the wiki you administrate. It's also like that fill in feature for open office that screws up my typo ing...GOGGLES DEMARCHY KNIT! --~ Tophatsig.png 16:31, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

  • I couldnt find things that I had previously searched anymore, so I disabled it. I appreciate that this option was given, but I agree with Zombiebaron about how everyone shouldnt have to go through the process of removing it (partly because its sort of confusing to do, and isnt instantly disabled.) ~Sir Rangeley Icons-flag-us.png GUN WotM UotM EGA +S (talk) 23:17, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Well, some of my Javascript isn't working. This is just fantastic. The new search box just messed up everyone's Javascript. I already disabled the search suggest and now some of my Javascript doesn't work. --General Insineratehymn 18:14, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
No, the updated skin did that. Those things would have broken even if search suggest had never been added. Spang talk 05:56, 06 Aug 2007

We have a new search box?

Click the link if you like, but it isn't actually going to go search for news. --205.150.76.14 21:21, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
Excuse me? is this actually a comment or simply mindless spam? --BonSig.png (Bonner) (Talk). 21:57, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
If you go to a page that doesn't exist, it gives a link to invite you to search for that keyword. For instance, Special:Search/News would search the entire wiki for pages containing "news". Replacing mediawiki's search with some other code seems to break this. --Carlb 12:18, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
  • Ok. So. The "disable" link doesn't work. It took me to my js page, and then when I hit save, it saved the code on one line, which made it a comment. And, thereby made it not work. So, if this is to remain in, that needs to be fixxored. I added manual line breaks and it worked ok --PantsMacKenzie 22:32, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
It worked for me and i didnt have to do anything to it --BonSig.png (Bonner) (Talk). 22:33, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

I didn't mind it much until I tried to disable it. Even with "disableSearchSuggest = true;" as the only line in my js, with the comments deleted, it failed to disable. (Browser = Firefox). Now I hate the search box and wish to smash it. ----OEJ 00:39, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Refresh? Spang talk 02:37, 04 Aug 2007
Reboot did it, anyway. Now it is gone and I hardly hate it at all. ----OEJ 14:27, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Is it me, or is there a tick box in your Preferences under Search which disables/enables it without all the carry-on? --Strange.PNG (but) Untrue  Whhhy?Whut? How? *Back from the dead* 08:55, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

The box doesn't work. Much like the goggles, it does nothing. --PantsMacKenzie 12:55, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

I'd like to have a find box

All this boring web 2.0 paradigms on search. Don't you people want to just find something ? I searched far and wide but found nothing that assured me I would find what I searched for. Searching does not necessarily mean finding and that is just wrong. Google search ??? Freaking give me Google find. I do not desire SQL queries, I want bloody SQL Answers. Who is with me on this ?, We need a FIND box.--Vosnul 22:38, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Oh, for sure. While we're at it, we should also make a several other boxes letting everyone know how we see the world. -- The Zombiebaron 22:45, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
