In the heat of July, the Arab Spring took on an unexpectedly complex twist, with the initial vague push for democracy giving way to a post-revolutionary state that left Westerners confused as to which side to support.
Of equal importance, Andy Murray became the first Briton to win Wimbledon since tennis was played by men smoking pipes in England's country gardens… and was was promptly offered the highest honour a Scot can receive, English nationality.
The Queen's grandson, Prince William, had a more ignominious moment as his wife gave birth to a black baby. (See right.)
The political story of the month was the latest scandal involving Anthony Weiner, who sent lewd photos to a woman via his phone. The embattled New York mayor candidate made an emotional speech in which he promised this was really the last time. Really.
While one American public figure was reproached for his sexual conduct towards an adult woman, former British grandfather figure Stuart Hall - convicted on paedophile charges - was moved to a new prison after accidentally being sent to a young offender's institution for women.
Both men had much to be ashamed of, and were shown the way by Cory Monteith. The actor, so ashamed of featuring in the awful TV series Glee, dutifully died of shame.
One can only hope that Monteith will enjoy the same kind of legacy as Elvis Presley, whose shameful final poo went under the hammer at Christie's.
