BarryC in #unnews mentioned having cartoons in UnNews. I'm not sure if it was an entirely serious preposition or not, but I made a few quick edits to the UnNews main page code and posted a possible example here. If we wanted to do this I think it could work like the Anniversaries, with a new one each day. If nobody got around to doing one for a particular day - and considering that it's a lot more work than typing in a couple fake holidays and birthdays, I imagine that would happen often - that section could just be blank. If more than one person created items we could randomize them.

Anyone think this is worthwhile? To shorten the page, in the example above I removed the Weather and Stocks sections because...they seemed the most expendable. —rc (t) 22:30, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

  • For We could have a page of "todays cartoons" with a random one of those cartoons appearing on the unnews mainpage. We could make an award and a contest! I know we could call it the Pooh Lit Comic! ...no I was serious on the first idea....--The Zombiebaron 00:48, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
  • Definite For - Especially if folks are able to churn out cartoons like RC's Jake Gyllenhall (brilliant). Would you propose that all the cartoons be created using the same program that you've used to keep a certain uniformity to the design or would it be open to the artist what methods are used to promote maximum creativity? Also, my good friend Captain Obvious proposed that if a monthly award were given to the best comic strip creator, why not call it The Commies (unless that already exists... and I just checked it out on Google and it does... stupid Comedy Central). My other good friend Captain Oblivious said you should call the awards The Commies. I was thinkin The Roobun Award For Stripping Excellence, but that might be too obscure a reference (or may just be stupid). --Imrealized 04:22, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
    • In response to your first question - absolutely not, I only use stripgenerator because I have no artistic ability. I'd hope if things took off that we'd get a wide variety of styles. The problem, of course, is that the cartoons have to be pretty small (think editorial page, one-panel stuff mostly) to fit on the UnNews sidebar. As for awards, well, we'll burn that bridge when we get to it, or however that saying goes. And thanks for the compliment, by the way. —rc (t) 04:51, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
      • Looks great RC, but just to clarify - the whole idea was to provide a daily satirical cartoon, just like newspapers have, (or at least have in the UK). --The Rt. Hon. BarryC Icons-flag-gb.png MUN (Symposium!) Sigh. Double Sigh. 10:29, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
        • Right - that's what I meant by editorial. The problem with doing current events, though, is that someone'll have to jump to breaking news pretty fast to cartoonize it before it gets stale. Perhaps we should just cut out the "This Day in History" title and just let people decide what to do on their own? —rc (t) 15:21, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
          • Surely couldn't people draw a cartoon of "going news" - aka bird flu, Iran etc. It doesn't neccessarily mean we have to use UnNews stories. Heck-we could run a competiton to promote the feature. --The Rt. Hon. BarryC Icons-flag-gb.png MUN (Symposium!) Sigh. Double Sigh. 17:53, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
            • Oh, no, I don't think we should force cartoons to be based on existing UnNews stories (the example I used just links to the 9/11 page, not an UnNews article). And for major ongoing events like bird flu and Iran and gas prices - stuff that has been in the news for months or years and will continue to be big news for a long time - it'd work fine. But the number of big events like this is limited, so if we formatted it like the anniversaries people could make whatever they wanted and stick their cartoon on any day, and if something more relevant to a particular day or news story came up they could just be rearranged a bit. —rc (t) 18:49, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
  • This sounds good, definitely do it. Although stay away from the strip generator. --Hindleyite Poet Lowrate Talk 11:03, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
.SVG Inkscape drawings may be suitable, just so long as they're proper graphics and not refrigerator art. Inkscape is free software for creating vector graphics - my only concern with using it is that the server-side .svg->.png conversions being done by Wikia are badly broken at the moment. --Carlb 00:45, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
For. I was going to suggest this, but it seems I was beaten to the punch. And what about horoscopes? Crosswords? And I will give an award to anyone who can find a way to make a funny Sudoku puzzle. --User:Nintendorulez 11:38, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
Sudoku? or seppuku? Either way, the victim ends up being another statistic. --Carlb 00:45, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Where would you suggest? In my haste to hack something up, I didn't notice that the cartoon bumped the featured news article down (I assumed it was the third lead). —rc (t) 22:58, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Below is my first stab at a political cartoon for UnNews. -- Tinymooose.gif » Sir Savethemooses Grand Commanding Officer ... holla atcha boy» 00:41, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

It greatly saddens me to admit this political cartoon is of far superior quality to anything I've seen in the local Texas papers...--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 01:38, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

  • The above cartoon is ment to demonstrate how tasteful sprite comics can be funny. Although I think that we should try and keep the number of comics featuring megaman killing osma to a low, eh? --The Zombiebaron 02:21, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Okay, I've set up a cartoon archive page similar to the one for the anniversaries. It should be really simple to insert a cartoon onto any day and have it show up on the UnNews page (or the test page, where you can currently see how it's set up). Check it out, see if there are any errors...we still need to decide on things like a name, how to promote it and whatnot, but the skeleton should be there now. —rc (t) 03:22, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Also, I think this would be a good chance to have branded work for once. It's not really appropriate to sign one's UnNews stories - since they're supposed to be "objective and factified" - but cartoonists always sign their work. —rc (t) 03:26, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Okay, scrap the other stuff, Splarka worked up a new format. I'd like to put it onto the main UnNews page soon. Issues:

  • Where to put it? I moved it down below the featured news item, and I think it works fairly well there.
  • What to remove (if anything) - the test page has the Weather and Stock sections removed to cut the page's length, but I don't want to arbitrarily remove stuff that people have worked on. The Weather section doesn't actually conflict with the cartoon section, but UnNews really is getting overly long in my opinion. (Okay, so is Wikinews, but then that's one of the reasons I don't go to Wikinews.)
  • Publicizing - I want to put a link on the front page or something for a couple days just to get the word out. Other than that I haven't really thought about it. Please feel free to contribute 'toons before it actually goes live! —rc (t) 03:38, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Comic Name/Award Name

As I raised this issue earlier, I think I should start a new heading for both the Award Name and the actual name of the strips (I get bored quick and didn't read all of the above stuff, but I think nothing has been decided on for either). Anywho here are some ideas:

  • The Krack Jirby Award (a play on the Jack Kirby Award)
  • The [insert-day-of-week] UnFunnies.
  • Animated News (in case some one likes it...but I figure its way to bland)
  • 1 minute newsflash
  • |)4 ( 0 |\/| 1 ( 5 (for those 1337ers out there)
  • Zombiebaron's Magical Mystery Tour

That's all for now. --The Zombiebaron 02:04, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

I like the UnFunnies, because everyone throws the term unfunny around so much, it'd be poking fun at that.--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 02:24, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
Sure I thought it was one of my best...they get worse the farther down the list you go...heh. --The Zombiebaron 02:33, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Uncertainly nobody is following this thread anymorn't, so I will throw words to the void. I really like Zombiebaron's UnFunnies as opposed to UnToons and still think if an award is concocted it should be the Roobun Award for Comic Stripping or Excellence in Comic Stripping or something to that effect (comic stripper?). And not to be a prick (ha!) but I am wondering if the additions of non-original pictures and, *gasp* photographs are within the spirit of this idea... I for one would rather see user-drawn stick figures than images sporked from elsewhere or photoshopped images, which already have a place within articles. Any other thoughts on this? --Imrealized 22:37, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

  • For Comedic strippers.--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 00:49, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
"UnFunnies" is okay with me as are the award names (though I don't want to be the one to make the award ;) ). As for the style/medium, I agree that completely original stuff is optimal - and yes, I know my own uses premade graphics - but I don't think we should set out strict guidelines for what can be used and what cannot (except non-original cartoons should be removed - was that just a musing or are some of the current cartoons not original to Uncyc?). I hope that the hand/computer-drawn cartoons will become the majority. If it turns out that people are just uploading the same stuff they would put in regular articles, we could maybe add some more guidelines. —rc (t) 01:31, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
Oh no! I didn't mean to sound too snobbish about all that... I enjoy the Comic Strip Emulator thingie (I even tried my hand at it but unfortunately didn't write down its number and have subsequently lost it) and appreciate its inclusion here. I was talking about some of the other entries, specifically the Dick Cheney photograph, the Osama drawing that isn't an original and the Playstation photograph. It just seemed that perhaps these are more suited for other places but I could, yet again, be entirely wrong. --Imrealized 02:56, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
Also, I'd love to help out in the award-making department, but I'm afraid I'm not terribly skilled at that sort of thing as even my template making is rudimentary at best. There must be somebody here more skilled for sucha endeavour, but if nobody wants the task I will certainly give it my plebeian best. --Imrealized 03:02, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
Hand/computer drawn and mostly original, is the best. Also, I've revampped the monthly viewer. Now you just go to the month template page (like for May) and there is a <noinclude>'d {{Untoon/month|May|05}} on the page, showing all the toons for that month. The More link on every day now points to the current month, and the edit/add link points to the edit page for that same month. --Splaka 03:44, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
  • Comment Looking over the current pics, this is turning into a v. bad version of VFP, and the template that splaka made is already full to the brim of pictures of varying quality and funniness. I appreciate the enthusiasm and all, but perhaps we should re-think the one-pic-a-day layout, and perhaps split it up into different sections (i.e. Handrawn, photoshopped, Genuine Microsoft® Artist™ list). The alternative, in my opinion, is to pool all the pictures and VFP them into the slot. Developing the 'genuine' idea, like Newspapers have a pernament artist, how about we hold an "Official Artist & Scribbler" competition. A foolitzer for the winner. --The Rt. Hon.
