LOS ANGELES - Police officials and a group of teenagers are investigating the mysterious death of Iwao Takamoto, recognized as the creator of the animated dog, Scooby-Doo. Takamoto was found Monday an abandoned pirate-themed amusement park, apparently eviscerated by the sword of a ghost pirate.

In a career that spanned more than six decades, Iwao Takamoto assisted in the designs of some of the biggest animated features and television shows, including "Dog Shit Sandwich," "The Pecker Brothers," "Lady and the Asshole" and "The Flintstones Meet Richard Feynman."

But it was Takamoto's creation of Scooby-Doo, the cheaply-animated, cowardly dog with an adventurous heart and an addiction to heroin, that captivated audiences and endured for generations.

Takamoto was 81, and according to doctors, would have probably lived to be 100 had his guts not been carved out by a madman. Authorities are currently questioning the caretaker of the amusement park, an ex-convinct and registered sex offender named Jebadiah Sneep.

Born in Los Angeles to parents who had emigrated from Japan, Takamoto graduated high school when World War II began. He and his family were sent to the Manzanar internment camp in the California desert, where he learned the art of illustration from his torturers.
