  12. Symbol declined.svg Against. as per POTR. It's good but not feature worthy. The idea could probably be taken into a different direction -- preferably one that doesn't look like a racist school report. This concept also seems to be VERY similar to Fidel Castro's Hurricane Cannon (which should probably be deleted). Also, you didn't mention the location of Bush's hurricane machine, which is obviously in Cuba. But at any rate, this is a joke that is too many years too late. The Kanye West bit is no longer funny, and certainly was not and is not funny enough for a whole article to be based upon. --EMC [TALK] 19:07, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
  13. Against The Hurricane Machine section was just completely devoid of humour, excluding the last line where he said he planted a tree (which was actually the funniest part of the article, in my opinion), but especially the welfare check part and the paragraph about Jackie Robinson's home runs (Though that part could be made funny by asserting that Jamal doesn't know who Jim Crow was, but he thinks he was probably a MLB commissioner at the time who tried to prevent Jackie Robinson from playing, but he did, anyway.). Also, I think Jamal should suggest selling the machine to Iran, since they could use it to prevent terrorists from Iraq from invading their country. Also, I have to agree that it's a joke way past it's prime (even during it's time it wasn't very funny). Also, the first picture looks kind of like one of my friends. Yes, I do have actual friends. 1. Symbol neutral vote.svg Abstain. I do understand that this is a bit of devil's advocacy from Guildy but the weakness is the description behind how this hurricane machine actually works and the absurdity of the concept. This really is its weak 'eye' and therefore doesn't propel it enough for me to be a VFH as it currently stands. --Laurels.gifRomArtus*Imperator ® (Orate). 06:17, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
What happens is he talks into a big bag until it's full of hot air, goes up in air force one, and opens the bag. The low pressure from the hot air blows hard on a vertical plane which causes an updraft that starts to spiral in a clockwise manner (anti-clockwise in the southern hemisphere) and as a result causes hurricanes. I though that bit was obvious. Pup t 01:32, 28/07/2009
  2. Extremely conflicted abstain. This article is absurdly racist. The question I kept chewing over is: "Does the author think it's funny because he's a racist and he laughs at the truth of the piece; or, does the author think it's funny because he thinks racism is often absurd and he's satirizing the kind of absurdly racist thing one might write if one were a racist; or, does the author just think racism is funny in a 'for the lulz' kind of way where expressing racist sentiments on the Internet is funny because people's reactions to it are funny"? It was a question that spanned an entire paragraph, and by the time I got done thinking it, I couldn't remember whether the article was funny or not. P.S.: I think I just stole Romartus's "worst voter ever" merit badge. Tinymasaru.gifpillow talk 00:02, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
This isn't racist. I think you've missed the point. This interweaves a lot of different things, but one of the main things it parodies is the tendency among certain black people (the uninformed segments) to racialize everything. An archetypical example is Kanye West's comments that Bush doesn't like black people (and hence didn't respond effectively to Katrina, which is taken to an absurd extreme here). -- round Ape (google) (Riot Porn) 00:35, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
No, it's absurdly racist. The narrator doesn't just have a tendency to racialize things: he's also painfully stupid, willing to believe anything he hears, and ridiculously ignorant about both politics and science. And the article concludes with a suggestion that our society encourages black people to be stupid, gullible and ignorant. The implication is that blacks are a group of morons who we're afraid to educate because we're too P.C. to disagree with their moronic conspiracy theories. Yeah. Racist. But I don't really care that it's racist: I've written plenty of racist things on Uncyc myself. What I can't put my finger on is whether the racism detracts from the humor, or whether it feels like it has an agenda other than making me laugh. Tinymasaru.gifpillow talk 00:48, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
Um, no. There are stupid black people. It is not racist to portray one. -- round Ape (google) (Riot Porn) 01:32, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
It's not just about one stupid black person. Jamaal's parents are portrayed as being as ignorant as he is, and the "honors student" and "scholarship to Yale" bits suggest that blacks who are given honors are far, far dumber than whites who are given the same honors. Also, you might take note of the fact that Guildy actually put the article in Category:Racism. Tinymasaru.gifpillow talk 20:28, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
Actually on that side of things I didn't consider the skin colour of the narrator. It seemed to me more than anything else to encapsulate the stupidity of people in general, and the whole scholarship thing showing how the education system is dumbing down in general. Race didn't even factor in my reading of it. Pup t 21:05, 30/07/2009
Then I think you completely missed the point of the article. Tinymasaru.gifpillow talk 22:59, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
I guess we all saw something different in it. -- round Ape (google) (Riot Porn) 23:13, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
The fact that Guildy actually tagged it "Racism" suggests that what I saw was closer to what he intended. Tinymasaru.gifpillow talk 23:30, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
Yes, but not necessarily Guildy's racism. It could be referring to Jamaal. -- round Ape (google) (Riot Porn) 00:30, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
If I had to make a guess, I'd say that the article actually attempts to show us that both sides of racism (racism against whites and racism against blacks) are stupid and absurd. The scholarship bit at the end is just there as an anticlimax for humorous effect. 3. Author's Comment. Yikes, I'm gone for a day and a half and this is what happens? Egh. Anyway, my own interpretation is close to what Ape is saying, with me also taking jabs and the public education system. As for race, yes, that does factor into it, but mostly this article is me (attempting to) play off certain black people's tendency to racialize everything. So yeah. For the record, I'm not a racist. —Unführer Guildy Ritter von Guildensternenstein 02:31, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Another Author's Comment. This should be an automatic front page, for being so thought provoking (it's obviously done a lot more in the way of discussion than most other articles). —Unführer Guildy Ritter von Guildensternenstein 02:38, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Author's Awaited Counter-Argument. Well, I don't see other VFH pages with arguments over article interpretation going on. The fact that this even causes such a discussion is a good thing. Also, I don't think either of you are that enthralled because you weren't taking part in said conversation. Also, I've consigned myself to the fact that this will almost certainly fail, so whatever. —Unführer Guildy Ritter von Guildensternenstein 01:16, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
Guildy, you realize some IP wrote "George Bush is a Nazi" in between every paragraph, correct? Highlight the text (or just edit it) to see what I mean, in case you didn't already know (though I mentioned it up where I did my against vote, which provided a few ideas of how to make this better).
