West Philadelphia-based abortion provider Kermit Gosnell was convicted on Monday of three counts of first-degree murder for the death of three babies he described as being "at the 39th week stage" but which prosecutors said were delivered alive and subsequently killed.

Kermit, 72, could face the death penalty when the jury reconvenes for the sentencing phase next week. The state of Pennsylvania prefers to execute prisoners via the use of lethal injection, but the authorities have not ruled out the possibility of constructing a huge replica of a womb and having Kermit sucked violently out of the vagina.

"He's disappointed and he's upset," defense lawyer Jack McMahon said of his client, who appeared calm in the courtroom. "Not just with the verdict, but also because he had a couple of appointments scheduled for today, and he really hates to let clients down when they are waiting to have their babies I mean, fetuses killed."

Kermit was arrested late last year after a complaint was made about him in a local Chinese restaurant. Mia Peggy's 12 month old son was crying during dinner, and the doctor was said to have grabbed him, stuffed him up Miss Peggy's dress and told her: "It's not too late, you're not full term yet, I can do it! Just let me get a knife to sever his spinal cord."

The subsequent inquiry led to the analysis of more than 250 'abortions' at the clinic. Many were found to have been conducted after the legal cut-off point of 24 weeks, three were adjudged to be acts of infanticide, and one involved the attempted slaughter of a 13 year old gamer dressed in a diaper.
