Talk:3D glasses
I'm tempted to actually rework this as an image-based article and properly overlap the text in red and cyan so that it'll work properly with the appropriate glasses. Thoughts? -- 54x F@H (XXXX!) 07:49, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
- Sounds good, but you'd really have to ask the author Ben DeRoy. If he wants to keep his article like this then maybe you could do one under a different title? —Braydie 07:51, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Okay... here's the monster of an image that I've got working through this. Tell me what you think:
3D glasses/composite -- 54x F@H (XXXX!) 11:35, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
- Replaced this to a link. I'm just editing the mainpage right now for consistancy with the composite, feel free to revert of change anything if I screw it up. -- 54x F@H (XXXX!) 11:10, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- Awesome article! And very funny template. "This article is 3-dimensional. You may now amuse those around you by equipping those ridiculous glasses you have in your sock drawer." *looks at original article with glasses* Okay, now I know why this article is in [[Category:AGH MY EYES]]... - Excellent; even better than what I had been imagining. It is too bad that, being an image, it's wiki-immune, but what can you do? I say to use this for the moment, shelve the article with the about-as-clever Upside Down, and leave it at that; I hate to put all the burden of constant editing on your shoulders (at least, after you get rid of the "nom" template, which will no longer apply after a certain period of time).—Lenoxus 05:27, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
- Getting rid of the template is easy. I can also make a few 3D template images and upload them to the talk page in case it gets voted for or whatevered in the future and I'm not around at the time- (I'm still relatively new and haven't even created my first original page, so a little guidance there would be neat ;) ) that way anyone can just copy and paste them in, and the style will be consistant. -- 54x F@H (XXXX!) 14:28, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
- Okay, got the article all ready to go. (updated, high-quality version above) Stripped out VFH references too, and even turned one of the images 3D as well. Go ahead as soon as the author pops in and says hi/whenever you get too impatient ;) -- 54x F@H (XXXX!) 16:57, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, I would recommend that the image would be posted as a separate subpage of the page, 3D glasses/Composite, referred to on the main article as "The composite version" of the page. I've been trying to reformat the page by using two separate columns for more realistic 3D look, one with red fonts and formatting on the left side and one with blue fonts and formatting on the other half, but it ended up a disaster and seems nearly impossible to achieve, and even if I could make the column variant work in my Mozilla Firefox browser, it may still be fucked up in Internet Explorer and/or Opera, Safari or Konqueror for instance (the apparent formatting discrepancies between different browser can very be frustrating, especially when using Position: Absolute codes). I have also made a better version of the cube thing, but just like with the current version, browser discrepancies seems to a big problem as it looks good in my Firefox but messed in Internet Explorer (SIGH). The browsers seem to interpret Position: absolute arguments very differently, it seems like.
- I'm going to attempt with the column variant again some time in the near future and see if I can get the Wiki/HTML coding for it to work with both Firefox and IE. The split column version might get very ugly and impractical though, even in comparison with the current formatting which was the best thing I could come up with for the moment, so I'm not so sure if the column thing is really desirable. I might post a possible column version of the page in a future subpage, 3D glasses/Column, or if really turns out good and working in different browsers, maybe it should replace the current code. By the way, I just tried wearing actual 3D glasses supplied with the Nightmare on Elm Street DVD box, and that image DOES look 3D! The article does not, because the NoES glasses I'm testing are red/green and not red/blue like the article, and the article is not really anaglyphic (but the best thing I could come up with by then). I'd better stop wearing those silly things before I become color blind and/or have a seizure, or at worst, is eaten by a 3D grue... - Ben DeRoy 12:38, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

- Cool cube. I'll image-edit the composite page when you update the original. :) Oh, and beware 3D grues:

You need a between the red and blue words, that way decent browsers wont wrap one of the two copies of the same word. --Artanis 00:07, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
Replace[edit source]
I think we should replace the article with the image... concensus 84.13.37.39 17:27, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

WTF, stop butting in GLaDOS! Anyway, I looked at the article with the paper 3D glasses that came with Spy Kids 3D (only 3D glasses I own :p), and it looks 3D. WackoMcGoose 14:18, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
Dude, let's actually make it cyan.[edit source]
Color blending blah and all, this won't work on standard red-cyan glasses because the blue text is still missing the green channel that'll make it blend in with the background. Then it'll actually work with every pair of red-left glasses.
3D text using CSS[edit source]
How's this? Similar to the column method Ben DeRoy came up with above, but I think this is simpler. Also, seems to work just fine in IE7 and Firefox 3. The annoying thing is you have to make changes in 4 different places, but at least the page would still be editable when 54x dies.

I was thinking about using CSS alpha transparency so that the letters could overlap better, but that's not universally supported yet... -kotra 01:28, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
- I was thinking doing something like on the Caffeine article. But this seeems better.
I tried implementing it on Template:3D, but it messed up 3D glasses a bit, so I reverted. Might be fixable, I think it's probably to do with the CSS-relative bits messing up rendering. Oh well! You can check out Template:3D_para if you want to see what I did (maybe using a paragraph-level version would work better, currently 3D glasses is word-by-word).
