Forum:Parody of the Wikipedia banner (urgent!)
Hi everyone! Wikipedia has just created a new banner begging for at least 2 euros of donations and what is cool is that it's fairly easy to parody. To see it, open any page on English Wikipedia, the text is the following:
“ | DEAR WIKIPEDIA READERS: To protect our independence, we'll never run ads. We take no government funds. We survive on donations averaging about €10. Now is the time we ask. If everyone reading this right now gave €2, our fundraiser would be done within an hour. We’re a small non-profit with costs of a top 5 website: servers, staff and programs. Wikipedia is something special. It is like a library or a public park where we can all go to think and learn. If Wikipedia is useful to you, please take one minute to make a donation to keep it online and ad-free for another year. Thank you. | ” |
Then follows a list of donation options (2 euros/5 euros/10 euros... CreditCard/PayPal, etc.)
I suggest the following text as a parody:
“ | DEAR UNCYCLOPEDIA READERS: To protect our independence, we take no government funds from governments such as the one of the Islamic State and, furthermore, we'll never run their ads, just their videos. We survive on donations averaging about €0 per user, but if everyone reading this right now gave at least €200, our fundraiser would be done within a second. We're a small almost-non-profit with costs of a top 5 website: useless servers, blood-thirsty staff and content-free programs. Uncyclopedia is something truly special. It is like a library someone brought a bunch of dogs to or a kind of public park you wouldn't visit if it’s late. If Wikipedia is useful to you, we are even more useful, chewing down its complex informations into easily digestible nonsense. Please take one second to make a decent donation to keep us online and possibly even ad-free for the next few moments and there is a chance you’ll never regret it. Thank you. | ” |
I am not sure how to copy Wikipedia banner's format, however.

- That's pretty sweet man. I couldn't think of a good topic name. lol. User:MagicBus/sig6 19:55, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
- Very clever idea, you should seek out the help of someone talented in formatting, like Zombiebaron. Mattsnow 10:23, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks! Notified him. Anton (talk) 10:42, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
- Every time I go on wikipedia now I feel as though we need something like this as a so-called antitode to its cringeworthiness. And what's more, the text is actually funny, if a little long. --EveryOtherUsernameWasTaken(get dtf) 16:32, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
- My text or theirs? Because my was supposed to be funny. Anton (talk) 17:02, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
- Yours--well both to an extent--the point I was trying to make was that these things often make the allusion without actually saying anything funny. My problem is that it is ostensibly longer than the wikipedia one.--EveryOtherUsernameWasTaken(get dtf) 18:35, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
- Ok, there are two phrases that aren't necessary and which could be crossed out. Here's an abridged version, approximately the same size as the Wikipedia one.

- I went over to the Wikia page to check out some link related problems (see the forum I just opened) and saw their version. I'd rather not do the same joke on both sites, but I did like the blue background, so I nicked it. Leverage (talk) 18:05, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
- Over there they changed my version and merged it with the last parody banner they/we had. So if we put the one above *pointing at it* here, then there won't be the same joke on two sites, just the fact that they'll both parody the same banner, which is different. Also, if I were you (the community, *pointing at everyone*), I would try to make my mind rather quickly, because Wikipedia can put its down at any moment. They even said "if everyone reading this [...follows some entirely irrealistic and utopic vision of Wikipedia readers], our fundraiser would be complete within an hour." Please, change whatever you would like in my banner, because it's just a proposal, but, please, we need to do something about it!

What worries me the most by the way on both uncys is how just the idea that the other site might be doing the similar thing interrupts and significantly slows down discussions and projects that could otherwise be extremely productive. Especially worrying for me, as I plan on sharing most of my ideas for projects with both sites, in an equal way. Anton (talk) 19:22, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
- I get you. My anxiety is just that our Google rating is affected by the amount of identical stuff on the sites. If in the future you have something topical to put up, let me know via a message. I don't look at the forums much, but I usually check my watchlist every day. Leverage (talk) 19:40, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
- Ok, sure. But are we going to put up any kind of parody banner? Anton (talk) 19:54, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
- The thing is, as far as I can see, Wikipedia doesn't have one up! Leverage (talk) 20:28, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
- Logged-in users don't see it. To copy the exact they are doing it, the parody banner has to be at MediaWiki:Anonnotice. If you are logged out and still don't see it, then it's strange, because I still do. Anton (talk) 06:57, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

I just want to know: are we going to do anything about it? Anton (talk) 06:16, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
- I still don't see it on Wikipedia, but I put up a version here, to keep you happy! I got the right colour and highlighted the right bit of text too! Leverage (talk) 13:57, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
