Forum:Leave the site notice alone
The site notice used to be reserved for the occasional important community news (PLS and other contests) and mockery of Wikipedia's Beg-athon. But now it seems that the site notice is being used to try and command not only registered users, but readers without accounts, to do something specific. For example, there is now a constant insistence that VFH is critically low in votes (if it is ALWAYS low in votes, maybe it's time we adjust our standards?). Another example is: "It's that time of the 5th - 10th days of the month where we remind you to Vote for Top 3 of the October! So do that." Additionally, none of these spammy site notice 'directives' are funny. I'm not sure if we need a consensus, but I really think the site notice should be used more sparingly, and when it is used, it should be funny and it should not suggest that we do this or that. --EMC [TALK] 19:51 Nov 6 2011
- I don't really see why it matters. --HM (T) 20:04, November 6, 2011 (UTC)
- Readers and contributors alike are being spammed with crap. This is bad. --EMC [TALK] 20:11 Nov 6 2011
- It is a line of text, maybe two. At the very top of the page. Ignore it if it bothers you. It really isn't difficult. --HM (T) 20:14, November 6, 2011 (UTC)
- I realize this is something minor, but that's no reason to be dismissive. I have to read it to know that it bothers me, and once that's done it's not always ignorable, especially when it's at the top and center of the site to attract attention (that's what site notices are for). And this is not just about my personal preference, but the preference of the wider community. I am also concerned about the impressions that it may give readers. --EMC [TALK] 20:22 Nov 6 2011
- There'sa diffence between something minor and a complete non-issue. Such as this. It still is your choice to even acknowledge its existence; I didn't even know it was there until you mentioned it. But discounting all of that...how is advertising this kind of thing bad? It's not as if it's being used for anything else, and more traffic on these pages is a good thing. And what kind of "impression" could possibly come out of wanting people to vote on things? That we like things being voted on? --HM (T) 20:31, November 6, 2011 (UTC)
- Acknowledging the existence of something is not a choice if it patently exists. What you are saying is that if there is something being done that we do not like, we should just ignore it. And it's a bad thing because it makes us look desperate and serious. It does not appeal to our readers, only community contributors. We create confusion when we throw community-related details at the public. Furthermore, there is nothing that would suggest that these pages have increased traffic due to exposure on the site notice. In fact, the repetition of "VFH is low in votes" seems to insinuate that this is not effective at all. I'm of the belief that this actually turns people away more than it entices them to vote. --EMC [TALK] 20:42 Nov 6 2011
- And you have to realize that the site notice loses its purpose and effectiveness in being relevant to people when it's just the same worn-out crap of "vote for this" and "do that". --EMC [TALK] 20:45 Nov 6 2011
- I tend to agree. If the voting thing annoyingly repetitively pops up, people are just gonna dismiss the sitenotice, which means they won't get to see anything in the sitenotice until someone updates the sitenotice id, a step often overlooked when changing the sitenotice. 21:29, 6 November 2011

The one with the cat.
What the hell was the banner with the cat about? It looked like an ad for air freshener. Are you saying Uncyclopedia doesn't smell or that you should avoid contact with your eyes? --Nikau 04:03, November 8, 2011 (UTC)
