Merge[edit source]

Before we get started, I'd just like to say right off the bat that I am Symbol for vote.svg for merging all Great Britain articles (namely the four mentioned in the vote nomination) to Great Britain. Sir SysRq (talk) 15:15, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Um guys?[edit source]

Simple eh?

So I'm just going to mention this (although I did below also). But... Great Britain is the Island. It does not include Ireland (that would be included in the United Kingdom). Wikipedia has a separate article for this and this. We probably should also. For those scared of Wikipedia. Rather like America is the USA right guys? :P From reading the comments on this page maybe it would be better to rewrite United Kingdom? Also... I can't begin to tell you how amusing this is to us Brits. *chortle, chortle* "I say, make me some tea my good man." MrN MrN9000SouthParksmall.jpg 15:36, Mar 31

i started with the intro, i tried to base it off the wikipedia page and muck it up a little. i personally don't consider myself dumb, but to this day i have no idea what countries are on what islands, or what are even countires, or what the difference between the UK and england is, or pretty much anything about the region. i guess we should avoid what we ended up doing with jew, and try to go for great britain instead of an american's guide to great britain. if you don't think it's the proper direction to go in then we can try again. you chappies will be able to tell us what works best, seeing as you're somewhere in the bloody great kingdom of something...SirGerrycheeversGunTalk 15:48, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Don't forget also that only Northern Ireland is included in the UK. Something which our friends the IRA have always been upset about. If you want all the Islands in our neck of the woods (including the whole of Ireland and all the little islands) then that would be The British Isles. Oh there is also The Commonwealth which includes many of the countries which we have kinda given back (because we did not want them) but the Queen still struts around claiming that she owns the place from time to time. Well, that would be more The Commonwealth realm, but you get the idea. Clear? OK, chaps. Tally ho! Oh, shit that's French. Dammit!!! MrN MrN9000SouthParksmall.jpg 16:05, Mar 31
Don't forget the Isle of Man which, as self-governing Crown dependency, is also not part of the UK...And then there's the Kingdom of Lovely, a micronation set up by comedian Danny Wallace (it consists entirely of a flat he used to live in London); Hay-on-Wye (declared idenpendence in 1977), Sealand (just off the Suffolk coast, declared an independent nation in 1967) and the Crown Dependency of Forvik, a 2.5 acre island just off Shetland. There may be material for humour there. Rabbi Techno Icons-flag-gb.png kvetch Icon rabbi.gif Contribs Foxicon.png FOXES 16:21, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Yea, the Isle of Man is still run by the Vikings if I remember properly. Also. Wales does not count. As you can see by looking at the Bristol Channel we have been attempting to saw it off and float it out into the Atlantic for years. *ducks the swipe from Rabbi* MrN MrN9000SouthParksmall.jpg 16:25, Mar 31
you bloody brits are so confusing...you colonized the rest of the world, but you couldn't even sweep up that whole region into 'england', for convenience's sake? SirGerrycheeversGunTalk 16:31, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
When we finally finished off the last actual Welsh ruler in Wales we slaughtered his army, locked his women in the Tower of London, killed him, nicked his Castle and took it stone by stone to Leeds where we rebuilt it. No point in doing things by halves you know. MrN MrN9000SouthParksmall.jpg 16:40, Mar 31
Pob hwyll ty Sais. Further research reveals that this sceptred isle is also shared with Frestonia, an independent nation set up by squatters in protest at the redevelopment of London's Freston Road - where the country is located - in 1977 (a good year for micronations);Llanwrst, arguably independent since the Middle Ages; Lundy, the island in the Bristol Channel, the owner of which declared himself king and issued coins from 1925 but never formally declared independence; Wanstonia, declared independence in 1994 as a protest agianst road building and the Copeman Empire, located on a caravan park in Norfolk - and the Grand Duchy of the Lagoan Isles which is made up of three tiny islands (with no residents) in a pond near Portsmouth, set up in 2005. 'They' even have their own currency. Who'd've thunk it, eh? Rabbi Techno Icons-flag-gb.png kvetch Icon rabbi.gif Contribs Foxicon.png FOXES 16:45, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
The problem stems, Gerrycheevers, from the fact that the English don't belong here at all. We British had been here for thousands of years before the English came along in about 600AD and set about joining up the seven nations that previously made up what we now know as England - they managed to do so in 927. There were, it seems, already black people here when the English showed up - Roman soldiers who settled and took up farming. That's always worth knowing about if you ever meet any BNP members, because it really pisses them off. Personally, I say send the English back to Germany where they belong. :-) Rabbi Techno Icons-flag-gb.png kvetch Icon rabbi.gif Contribs Foxicon.png FOXES 16:51, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
There's also the Pictish Free State, which was set up by one Robbie the Pict and which now has a total landmass of 1000 acres. That's worth an article in its own right. Rabbi Techno Icons-flag-gb.png kvetch Icon rabbi.gif Contribs Foxicon.png FOXES 17:44, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Concepts[edit source]

I really don't have much for you, so I'm gonna struggle to come up with at least one to kick us off.

Proposal

Write this from an American's perspective (not hard for me). As in, be totally ignorant and clueless as to where Britain actually is (perhaps a map showing Britain as being part of mainland Europe? or being all of mainland Europe?), make a big deal about spelling ("o" vs "ou"), and other hilarious Americanisms. So it'll basically be completely wrong information, like "Britain was the first nation in the world," or "Americans are all the descendants of Britains."

alright folks, head to Great Britain/Colonization and let's get started. looks like we're going with "write this from an american's perspective", so let's run with that and see how it works out. SirGerrycheeversGunTalk 15:19, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

We need an admin to change the name to United Kingdom, because Great britain is just the island, and as such does not include Northern Ireland and all the other small leftover colonies. --CrabPope 21:01, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

"I'm sorry Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that". This is going to have to be about Great Britain. United Kingdom of Britannia (and Northern Pangaea) has not had the colonisation template ({{CotW}}) on it, and so there has been no opportunity for anyone to object to rewriting the page. This one is going to have to not include Ireland I'm afraid. Considering the chosen style of writing this article, I don't think it's going to be a problem however, as the author probably thinks that Australia is part of Great Britain. Yea, I'm a bastard eh? Go on, tell me I'm a bastard. I'm sick of this nice boy image anyway. I do understand that we want this to be "The main" English/UK/Great Britain/type thing article, and maybe there is a way to deal with that when this article is done. Hope this is helpful[edit source]

Britain has a number of little sub peoples, like the Scots, English, Scouse, Welsh, Cornish and Londoner. Since this is meant to be from an American perspective, I’m guessing there’s some humour value in having this brought out quite a bit. For instance the Welsh and the Scots regard themselves as very separate, however even in these separate parts there are still big distinctions, for instance I'm from the North of Scotland and I’m regarded as being e a bit of a ‘sheepshagger’ by the south of Scotland, whilst all the people from Fife are weirdoes. A similar story could be said of the west coast and the Hebrides. A similar thing goes on in England like Scousers, like Mhaille, are viewed as being a bit ‘northern’ again, same for the Geordies, Mancs etc. Whereas the South as a lot more of the ‘dapper gent image’. This is probably a misnomer to a large extent outside of the big University towns like Oxford. There’s not really a typical Brit.

Also the preoccupation with social class is big one for Britain and the idea that the northern parts are pretty destitute as well as innercitys have spawned a myriad of subcultures reflect this. Since that hag Thatcher, these Subcultures are Britain’s primary export and are a major focus for defining us as something beyond another Starbucks/shithole chain yank place of some kind.

It might be a good angle to have a lot about how we’re many people’s squabbling our birthright from Indian corner shop owners – I hope some of this might be helpful:)--Sycamore (Talk) 13:10, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

SysRq's thoughts[edit source]

Alright, here's what I think of your stuff so far.

The first intro is great. Nice use of repetitive humo(u)r, very encyclopedic, well written, and good tone. I like it. Second intro conflicts with the first and is shorter, but also does the trick quite nicely. The rest is too stylistic for my tastes, not very encyclopedic. It doesn't fit and needs to be brought back to the encyclopedic tone.

And now, I think I may write something. Probably not, though. Sir SysRq (talk) 20:43, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

I'm confused[edit source]

Is the article supposed to be written from the point of view of a stereotypically clueless American, or is the article a parody of the silliness of the confusing myriad of names for the various islands/nations/countries that make up the British Isles? Or is it a combination of the two? My brain hurts. --CrabPope 20:48, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Clueless, but in a strong encyclopaedic tone I was hoping :-) Someone needs to do a chop of the venn diagram at some point. Obviously we can't leave it like that. Are we going to use English or American spellings for this article? MrN MrN9000SouthParksmall.jpg 20:52, Apr 1

I do agree it's not good enough as it is now... Also, I will protect the article if it's dicked with too much, but I doubt the people who are likely to vandalise this are smart enough to realise they are being insulted. MrN MrN9000SouthParksmall.jpg 23:31, Apr 2

Bring back the image of France and make the flag and coat of arms better. As in, make the flag the Australian flag or something. And then put the Griffindor house seal as the coat of arms. Something not too silly but obviously not right. Sir SysRq (talk) 01:45, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

True, but this article is about what an intelligent yet clueless American thinks about England. The trick is to blend fact and fiction I guess. Per the warcraft thing, hehe... No biggie... Just... The Shire, 12,000 pikemen, ~5,000 longbowmen, long bows, War Galleys, and Land Armies... Maybe that's better than what's there now but I would guess that our author is unlikely to think that British use longbowmen. Maybe the boats used in the Oxford and Cambridge boat race (as he may have seen that on the TV in America or witnessed it when visiting).
hahaha, no my friend, look.. The Shire is Tolkein not Warcraft. And Tolkein was british btw. The other 12,000 pikemen and stuff is historical, you know, medieval and shit, nothing fiction... :) SIRE FREDDMOOSHA Lord of Egypt AMUSE ME 07:24, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
Ahhhh, but... Warcraft was inspired by Tolkein. Tolkein was inspired by an area of the UK which I know well actually. Also... I am British don't forget.  ;) MrN MrN9000SouthParksmall.jpg 07:30, Apr 3

...aka Europe...[edit source]

I can't be bothered to dig through the history to find the culprit, but someone has reverted the line I added about Great Britain being the same thing as Europe. If I'm the only one who thinks this is funny, please tell me here, but don't just revert without some kind of explanation. I'd like to hear some arguments against that opening line, which I think saved the first paragraph from dryness and set the tone for the rest of the article. Also, somebody changed the opening paragraph in the Foreign Policy section. I think it was better before. -OptyC Sucks! Icons-flag-us.png CUN16:03, 9 Apr
Yeah. This is a collaboration so I'm open to criticism regarding my ideas, and if what I contribute isn't funny I'll gladly get out of the way. But it needs to be a consensus that I am not funny and not just one user trying to run with it. Sir SysRq (talk) 16:15, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
Actually, I think that Europe stuff was rather funny. You could mention something like "Mainland Europe has since ancient times been part of the British nation and it is a fact no one can deny." Okay, I'm going to fix it back to what I had and if it gets reverted again and no one comes here to explain why then we're going to have to take an alternate course of action. Collaborations are supposed to be, well, collaborative. Please discuss changes here from now on. Sir SysRq (talk) 18:55, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
I think this confusion all started when Gerrycheevers added parts of OptimusC's version to the article. That lead seems to be inspired by Sonje's image.
