I tried to put up a centralnotice banner. It says, "We will be updating MediaWiki to 1.23 on June 29 2:00-6:00 UTC. Expect downtime, read-only access, and other weirdnesses." Can people see it? I can't see it.

I can see it too. I'll probably turn it off because CentralNotice notices load after the page has loaded and cause it to be slower, and then my computer's fan is noisier, and it's all round annoying. Updating the mediawiki to 1.23. This will fix some bugs, as well as introduce a highly controversial and IMHO ugly set of changes to the Vector skin, and possibly new bugs as well. Hello, in case you didn't notice the downtime, we're running 1.23.1 now! Yay! Not that many things have changed, but if you notice something weird, or not working properly, or just displaying a blank page, please leave a note here and we'll look into it.

Now that we're on a recent-ish version of MediaWiki, we'll be enabling some new features that Wikipedia has had for a while, including better search, the new editor that English Wikipedians loved, and some other crazy things. Legoktm (talk) 06:01, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

VisualEditor, now? I'd really rather you not - it's still pretty buggy last I checked, and a study they did showed that new users who used VisualEditor tended to do less wiki work and get blocked more. I'll link it if/when I find it again. One thing I would really like us to have, though, is Echo. It turns out that most of the typography refresh isn't even in the mw 1.23 released to third-parties, though what little is there happily includes some of the worse accessibility issues. I can come up with some fixed css to deal with that, and create a similar visual style to the typography refresh later (but that actually works properly without making things worse), but right now I'm a bit swamped. -— Lyrithya ༆ 16:41, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

Ah, I see. I was under the impression that third-party wikis got everything wikimedia had after noticing this wiki. I already have more fixed and unfixed css of my own than you can shake a stick at, and I could easily come up with more, but I'd rather not implement it because I think it looks just fine and dandy how it is now. For VE, I was going to turn it on as opt-in. If you're logged in and you enable it in your preferences you can use it, otherwise you won't notice it. We can enable Echo, however mention/ping notifications won't work since most people here have their signatures in a template. Legoktm (talk) 17:31, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

Opt-in sounds cool. I don't understand why pings wouldn't work due to signatures in a template - does the ping depend on a user's signature somehow? I thought a link to someone's user page constituted a ping. I also hijacked a template just so it could be used for pings. The email notifications are the main reason I like Echo, though on the other hand I'm not sure I'd be too happy about getting rid of the Orange bar of Doom, since it's much more noticeable than a little orange blip way up high. Yeah, everybody's preferences seem to have been set back to the default. That's probably not supposed to happen, but then upgrades are a major pain in the tree fluff. Say, nobody ever thanked our poor, long-suffering sysadmins for this upgrade. Ungrateful poopyheads. Lyrithya was voted user of the year. By uncyclopedian standards that is an uproarious standing ovation of thanks. I also noticed that the options on the left hand side have some items missing. Also...I would be extreeeeeeeemely grateful and would say thank you a million times if someone could return the "upload multiple files" button if it is at all possible. --ShabiDOO 01:59, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

True, but that wasn't for this upgrade. I don't know exactly how one would enable multiple file uploading, though I did find this and this which may or may not provide feasible ways of enabling it.
