Just thought I'd point out that the parsing of animated GIFs has changed again. It appears that the animation will now not work at all if the GIF is resized (Edit: shrunk) in any way. Nothing that exciting, but it has impacted some articles, including previous features. Nominally Humane! 01:57 08 Apr

I thought that's the way it's always been. ~Sir Frosty (Talk to me!) Proudly bogan 02:02, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
Yes and no. Some GIFs used to reduce size comfortably to a certain point before freezing. Some GIFs used to shrink but had issues along the way. (MacMania and I had an argument with a Pixar related GIF a couple of years back as it did some really odd things when reduced.) It now looks as though the small amount of leeway we had with them has now gone. As an example - Street Fighter used to have a "bouncing" Ryu as a logo. He's now frozen completely. (Which means I either have to resize the GIF offsite and reupload, make the GIF full size which will cover half of the top menu, or leave him frozen.) In most cases this isn't a bad thing, as animated GIFs can be annoying. On something like Game:Alone in the dark - particularly the intro screens - Microsoft knowledge base, and Tropical cyclone, animated GIFs are integral to the article. Nominally Humane! 02:15 08 Apr
Oh, the times when GIFs still worked when shrunk.... Good times, good times. Sir SockySexy girls.jpg Mermaid with dolphin.jpg Tired Marilyn Monroe.jpg (talk) (stalk)Magnemite.gif Icons-flag-be.png GUN SotM UotM PMotM UotYPotM WotM 22:36, 12 April 2012
I didn't touch that
MC Hammer believes otherwise. He doesn't care if it's Hammer Time. Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 02:31, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
Why would anyone want to increase the size of Hammer? Nominally Humane! 02:38 08 Apr
Giant MC Hammer is better than Tiny MC Hammer. Everybody knows that. That's why he won't stop dancing. Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 02:47, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
But he's all pixelated. That's an image of a man in desperate need of some resolution. Nominally Humane! 03:15 08 Apr
Rap stars back when were all pixelated. Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 03:47, April 8, 2012 (UTC)

  • Ok here's an animated gif. Also, this is not a new issue. Please use Special:Contact if you wish to inform Wikia about it. -- The Zombiebaron 04:19, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
Oh - it's not something that they're likely to change, given it's a parsing thing, which is why I mentioned it here rather than going straight to Sannse or Wikia. I actually noticed it due to an issue over at WP that was reported about a month ago. I just figured people would prefer to be made aware of it. (As I have to now tweak a couple of things in a few of my articles - especially the Intelligent Mathematics one, which has other issues in it as well.) Nominally Humane! 04:36 08 Apr
Oh ok. Well, since this issue began I have reuploaded a few GIFs at smaller sizes. It's not hard at all for me to do it using ImageReady, so if you need me to help you reupload images just let me know. -- The Zombiebaron 04:39, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
I'm sure nobody cares anymore, but for the future, if you're just resizing stuff, ImageReady is kinda overkill. GIMP resizes animated GIFs just fine, and if you need to do heavier-duty stuff, there's GIMP Animation Package (GAP). ~ BB ~ (T) Icons-flag-us.pngSat, Apr 14 '12 11:27 (UTC)
I used to have a gif editing package that was pure gif editing. Took 5 seconds to run. But I have to admit I love GAP. Nominally Humane! 12:07 14 Apr
    What version you got? ~ BB ~ (T) Icons-flag-us.pngSat, Apr 14 '12 14:05 (UTC)
It's about 12-18 months old. Nominally Humane! 02:08 14 Apr
Judging from posts I've seen on the subject, the most recent versions have some pretty cool improvements. I just can't get *at* them, because they don't have any binaries for windows. I know where I can find a beta for version 2.7-something...but...it's on "some website", and I'm afraid of viruses. ~ BB ~ (T) Icons-flag-us.pngSat, Apr 14 '12 14:49 (UTC)
I'm not sure where I got mine. I generally don't stress about viruses - that's what virus checkers are for, and I'm pretty good at manually removing them from registry when needed. I have a feeling it may be 2.7 that I have. I'll check again in the morning when I'm at my laptop. Nominally Humane! 02:59 14 Apr
THE MIGHTY PUPPYONTHERADIO USES WINDOWS?!?!? FOR SHAME! ~ BB ~ (T) Icons-flag-us.pngSat, Apr 14 '12 15:31 (UTC)
No. He uses Hipster Windows. If you buy a license it's only good until it gets popular. Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 16:09, April 14, 2012 (UTC)
I use the OEM OS. I'm lazy. I haven't even bothered to jailbreak my phone. Nominally Humane! 02:10 15 Apr
I use the REM OS. It plays Shiny Happy People when it boots up. I hate it so much! Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 02:37, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
And I have GIMP 2.6 with GAP plugin. Nominally Humane! 02:59 15 Apr
