Moving Czech Republic[edit source]
Hey, please stop moving this page. Calling it Czechia in the article is fine, but an article like this needs to be titled "Czech Republic". Cheers. MrX 22:15, 13 May 2022 (UTC)
- @MrX: Why? It is called as ‘Czechia’ on all other sites. Category ‘Czech Republic’ is empty. Even the tamplate says ‘Czechia’. --Martin from Czechia (talk) 22:42, 13 May 2022 (UTC)
- It is not called Czechia on all other sites, none that I know of, the one we would go by here, the English Wikipedia, calls it the Czech Republic. That category is only empty and that template only says Czechia because you changed everything. MrX 23:09, 13 May 2022 (UTC)
- @MrX: You have not checked CIA World Factbook or Google or Bing or the European Union, United Nations Data, IIHF, US Department of State, RationalWiki, OS Map, … --Martin from Czechia (talk) 10:53, 14 May 2022 (UTC)
- Those sites all say that the official name is the Czech Republic, it is also the most common name in the English language. MrX 14:29, 14 May 2022 (UTC)
- @MrX:Czechia is also offical. On the site I posted: EU's site does not mention the name ‘the Czech Republic’, CIA World Factbook says, ‘Czechia’ is the short name. Google and Bing use the name ‘Czechia’ in their systems as primer. If you have not added, why do you think it is most common in English language, I can also reject it without a reason. --Martin from Czechia (talk) 17:47, 14 May 2022 (UTC)
- K, first off, in these situations, we nearly always follow what the Wikipedia article does, which in this case is to call the article “Czech Republic”. By all means, feel free to call it Czechia a few times throughout the article and/or in a few other places. Why do I think Czech Republic is the most common name in the English language? Because it is. But if you won’t take my word for it, then read the Wikipedia article “Name of the Czech Republic”. Cheers. MrX 20:26, 14 May 2022 (UTC)
- @MrX: Mentioned article does not speak about the fact, what name should be most common in English. The sentence that it is most common is not supported by anything other. Therfore, it would be equally relevant that I disagree. --Martin from Czechia (talk) 20:34, 14 May 2022 (UTC)
- It says “However, most English speakers use [the] Czech Republic in all contexts.”, and it sources that to The Atlantic. If you’re unfamiliar, The Atlantic is a magazine that is a reliable source for all topics except Tom Brady. More importantly, as I’ve said, in order to best parody Wikipedia, we normally use the same titles for articles that they do, which, again, in this case, is “Czech Republic”. Cheers. MrX 20:52, 14 May 2022 (UTC)
- @MrX: But this article is quite old (2016). The author also did not understand the concept of the short (geographical) name. The only think he has are old Google N-Grams. (If we look at the timeline, it ends somewhere between 2005 and 2010). It is not so good source. --Martin from Czechia (talk) 13:12, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
- No, the author did indeed understand that concept, with all due respect, you however do not seem to understand that concept. The article, relatively speaking, actually is not that old, nothing has changed. MrX 14:38, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Mrx: You have said that nothing has changed. PS: The UN say something other. Short name does not mean the country has a one-word name. The word ‘short’ refers to the fact that geographical (short) names are usualy shorter than formal (long names). read p. 1 --Martin from Czechia (talk) 16:26, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
- I don't know how else to explain this to you. We at Uncyc are many things, almost all comedy-related, but first and foremost we are a parody of Wikipedia. This does not mean that every article we have has to have the same title as Wikipedia, but this is one case where it is definitely going to be the same. And I understand that most countries around the world have more than one name, that's fine. But for titling this article, we're going to stick with Czech Republic because that is A) What Wikipedia's article is titled, and B) By far the most common name used in the English language. Seriously[edit source]
I've tried to be real cool about all this. Go ahead and mention Czechia a bunch in the articles, but these articles, cats, and files need to be named with Czech Republic. Please stop. Thanks. Cheers. MrX 19:22, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
