Sparta was a quiet, peaceful villiage just like this. Ignore the power lines.

Sparta was a Greek city-state in the Peloponnesus, in the area of Laconia. Sparta is renowned for its great, advanced society in which men and women were able to hold positions of power, and the Spartans themselves are world-renowned for their austerity and self-restraint, their aristocratic and virtuous ways of life, and for their ability to make me write a huge sentence about all that. Spartan contributions to modern society include the Olympic Games, constitutions, and several different sex positions.

Names[edit | edit source]

Ancient Greeks sometimes liked to call Sparta "Lakedaimon," or "Lakedaimonia;" these are the names that Sparta is most often called by famous philosophers such as Homer, Herodotus, and Idiocrates. However, the name was changed to Sparta by some king who got too lazy to pronounce "Lakedaimon."

History[edit | edit source]

Prehistory[edit | edit source]

Spartan civilization started with the Mycenaeans who settled around the region of Laconia. There are traces of ancient pottery, ruins, and Trojan Condoms stolen from Troy during the Trojan War. The area fell into decline around the Bronze Age, and a Macedonian tribe called the "Dorians" conquered the area that woulf become Sparta. For a while, there was lawlessness and anarchy in the Laconian region, but then a man named Lykourgos came forward and became leader. People were skeptical at first because he was a lawyer, but eventually they helped him create the Spartan society.

Classical Era[edit | edit source]

It was during this time that the Spartans really made their mark on history.
